  • In this paper, effect of TiN-coating on product quality such as dimensional accuracy and surface roughness is experimentally investigated. A punch of SKD11 material in cold forging of an automotive bearing shaft and its related process found in a cold forging company ate selected as the test example. The effect of TiN-coating is revealed in a quantitative manner. It is to be noted that TiN-coating is effective in controlling the dimensional accuracy and surface roughness as well as in increasing tool lift.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the seismic demand on the isolated slab-on-steel girder bridge under cold climate conditions. To this end comparative test results are presented of laminated elastomeric and lead-rubber seismic isolators in warm and cold temperature conditions. At extremely cold temperatures, rubber "glass-harden" and as a result rubber bearings that may be used for seating bridges behave in a significantly non-linear fashion. From the nonlinear time history analysis of the isolated slab-on-steel girder bridge, larger forces are transferred to the substructures. however smaller displacement at superstructure is obtained under cold climate conditions. These phenomenons might need to be considered in design stage of the seismically isolated bridges.

  • Hydrocarbon adsorber is considered as a promising technology to reduce cold start HCs in automotive exhaust gas. In this study, three in-line adsorber systems were tried to reduce the cold start emission. To check the basic characteristics of adsorber converters, surface areas, TPD and TP A were examined after a hydrothermal aging. Also idle engine bench was used to find the adsorption and desorption capabilities of the adsorber systems at cold start. Finally a practicability of the adsorber systems for the LEV achievement was checked with FTP test on a 2.0 D MIT vehicle. The results of this study indicate that hydrocarbon adsorber system is one of the promising passive technologies to meet the ULEV regulation.

  • In this study we investigate the machining characteristics of tool material for cold forging by using the machining center. The test was in the SKD62 cold forging material by 2-edge endmill with cutting fluid. The coating conditions are depth of cut 1,2,3mm. WC-endmill, federate 20mm/min, cutting velocity 20m/min. The surface roughness increase as the depth of cut increase. Also cutting force increase whiles the depth of cut increase.

  • In order to meet the stringent emission regulations, fast light-off of a catalyst is essential to reduce the HC and CO emissions during cold start. Cranking Exhaust Gas Ignition (CEGI) method developed in this study showed that the catalyst reaches the light-off temperature in a few seconds after cold start. The CEGI system cuts off the ignition signal for a few seconds during the cranking period. so the unburned fuel-air mixture bypasses the combustion chamber and flows through the exhaust manifold. When the unburned mixture reaches two glow plugs installed upstream of the catalyst, it burns and releases the thermal energy to heat up the catalyst. Results from the FTP-75 tests showed that the exhaust emissions with the CEGI reduced by 47.7% for THC and by 88.6% for CO in the cold-transient phase of the test.

  • In order to measure the superconducting transition temperature, the critical current and the alternating current(AC) loss on short samples of high temperature superconductor, a cryocooler cooled cryostat has been designed and built. Two closed-cycle coolers provide cooling with an ultimate sample temperature below 16K. Temperature regulation is provided by 50W of electrical heater that opposes the cooling power from the cold heads. Temperature control feedback is by means of a cernox temperature sensor co-located with the heaters on the second stage of the cold head. Additional temperature sensors are located on the sample mount(B1), on the CVI cold head(B2) and on the Dakin cold head(B3). AC losses on the sample high temperature superconductor were measured at 30K so that the developed device performance was evaluated. In this paper, the design, fabrication and test results on the cryocooler cooled cryostat are presented.

An Evaluation of Bending Fatigue Strength for Cold Forged Bevel Gear (냉간단조 베벨기어의 굽힘피로강도 평가)

  • Gears are the most commonly used parts in automotive and industrial applications. One of most common modes of gear failures is tooth breakage, which is usually produced by the bending fatigue failure. It is important to manufacture the gears which can withstand the applied stresses in view of safety and economic requirement. This paper deals with bending fatigue strength for cold forged bevel gear. Especially, to compare fatigue characteristics for manufacturing processes difference, bending fatigue tests of bevel gears made by three different processes respectively. Results indicate that the fatigue strength of bevel gear is improved by cold forging process. Intergranular fracture is found on fatigue fracture surface, and dimples are observed on final fracture surface. The fatigue failure cannot be considered as a deterministic quantity, but must be characterized statistically. This study proposes a method to estimate bending fatigue lift of the bevel gear using the probability-load-life and Weibull analysis.

  • It is already known that hardness number of cold-forged product is in close conjunction with its effective strain. This paper presents the method to predict the relation between effective strains and hardness by using FE-simulation of hardness test from the conception that hardness indicates resistance to plastic deformation. The results of FE-simulation for the materials are compared with those of experiments and also compared with those of experiments in reference to show the feasibility of the proposed method. In addition, the present method was applied to the cold-forged product to verify the relation between hardness and effective strain. As a result, the predicted hardness number by the present method is in good agreement with experimental values. Prediction of hardness fur a cold-forged product comes to be possible by estimating the relation between effective strain and hardness using the proposed method in this study.

Stress Corrosion Cracking Behavior of Cold Worked 316L Stainless Steel in Chloride Environment

  • The outcomes of solution annealing and stress corrosion cracking in cold-worked 316L austenitic stainless steel have been studied using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and the slow strain rate test (SSRT) technique. The good compatibility with a high-temperature water environment allows 316L austenitic stainless steel to be widely adopted as an internal structural material in light water reactors. However, stress corrosion cracking (SCC) has recently been highlighted in the stainless steels used in commercial pressurized water reactor (PWR) plants. In this paper, SCC and inter granular cracking (IGC) are discussed on the basis of solution annealing in a chloride environment. It was found that the martensitic contents of cold-worked 316L stainless steel decreased as the solution annealing time was increased at a high temperature. Moreover, mode of SCC was closely related to use of a chloride environment. The results here provide evidence of the vital role of a chloride environment during the SCC of cold-worked 316L.

  • It is very important to supply the diesel fuel from fuel tank to combustion chamber in case of cold start procedure. the paraffin hydrocarbons are easily solidified at low fuel temperature and it can be blocking the fuel supply to the high pressure fuel pump. In order to reduce the fuel crystallization (Waxing), it have been used to develop not only cold flow additives but also the proper mounting design of fuel filter. Block heater in the fuel filter assembly have been also contained to improve the cold start and prevent blocking the fuel supply in Common Rail Direct Injection System. we can obtain the fuel pressure drop and fuel flow rate, power consumption of fuel heater to have the cold flow evaluation test with the saperated and composited fuel heater at the low ambient temperature, Due to evaluating cold flow performance of two block heater, we knew that composited package fuel heater was the excellent cold flow performance compared to separated type and obtained the parameters of cold flow.
