디젤차량 SCR 시스템용 요소수용액의 동결과 해동 현상 (Freezing and Melting Phenomena of Urea-water Solution for Diesel Vehicle SCR System)

  • Urea-SCR system, the selective catalytic reduction using urea as reducing agent, is a powerful technique to reduce nitrogen oxides(NOx) emitted from diesel engines. However, a tank of urea(32.5 wt%)-water solution can be frozen in low ambient temperature levels of below $-11^{\circ}C$. The purpose of this study is to understand freezing and melting phenomena of the urea-water solution, and its can be applied to get the urea-water solution from frozen it within 5 minutes after cold start. Factors considered were the type of heater and the urea tank shape. From the results, it was found that melting volume of cartridge heater B during 5 minutes of heating period was 83ml when supplying electric power of 150W. Horizontal heater B, which was put in the narrow bottom space of the tank T1, had fast melting characteristics.

  • The jet in crossflow is a spray method used in the various air-breathing engine. In order to understand the spray characteristics in various environments, many prior studies have been conducted. However, there is a lack of understanding of the low-temperature liquid spray characteristics below 273 K. With this in mind, we tried to enhance the knowledge of the low-temperature liquid spray characteristics by identifying the penetration height of low-temperature ethanol. The experiment was conducted under phase pressure, and 273 K of air and 293, 263, and 233 K of ethanol was used. Shadowgraphy was employed to measure the liquid penetration, and Otsu's method was used to analyze the penetration height. The heights tend to decrease as the temperature of the liquid jet decreases. A correlation for the penetration height in the experimental conditions was derived and presented.

가솔린엔진의 연료 미립화 향상을 위한 공급연료 가열에 대한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on the Fuel Heating for Enhancing Fuel Atomization)

  • Poor fuel vaporization in gasoline engines causes the problem of HC emission during the cold start and warm-up period. This paper presents a strategy to improve fuel atomization during the warm-up phase. In this experiment, the heated fuel-rail system is constructed to investigate the effects of fuel heating on the average size of fuel droplets. The fuel atomization effects are examined by measuring Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD) of the fuel droplets from the three different types (two-hole, pintle, and six-hole) of injectors based upon a returnless heated fuel-rail system. The results show that the six-hole type injector is the most sensitive to fuel heating in terms of SMD among three different types of injectors.

  • In order to vitrify the W1 waste (ion-exchange resin(IER), zeolite, and dry active waste(DAW)) generated from Korean Nuclear Power Plants, a glass formulation development based on waste compositions and production rates was performed. A aluminoborosilicate glass, AG8W1, was formulated to vitrify the W1 waste in an induction cold crucible melter(CCM). The processability, product performance, and economics of the candidate glass were calculated using a computer code and were measured experimentally in the laboratory and CCM. The glass viscosity and electrical conductivity as the process parameters were in the desired ranges. Start-up and maintaining glass melt of the candidate glass were favorable in the CCM. The product quality of the glass such as chemical durability, phase stability, etc. was satisfactory. The vitrification process using the candidate glass was also evaluated to be operated as economically as possible.

  • Phase separation and low cetane number are the main barriers to the large-scale use of ethanol-diesel blend fuel on small diesel engines. In this paper, an additive package is designed on the basis of the blended fuel properties to overcome these limitations. The experiments show that the solubility of ethanol in diesel is evidently increased by adding $1{\sim}2%$ (in volume) of the additive package and the flammability of ethanol-diesel blend fuel with the additive has reached the neat diesel level under the cold start conditions. Effects of the ethanol content in diesel on fuel economy, combustion characteristics, and emission characteristics are also investigated with the ethanol blend ratios of 10%, 20% and 30%. The increase in ethanol content shows that the specific fuel consumption and the brake thermal efficiency are both gradually increased compared to neat diesel. The soot concentrations of the three blended fuels are all greatly lower than that of neat diesel. $NO_x$ emission is increased with an increase in the engine load and is reduced with the increase in the ethanol blend ratio under a high load.

  • In order to vitrify the combustible dry active waste (DAW) generated from Korean Nuclear Power Plants, a glass formulation development based on waste composition was performed. 배기열 회수장치 적용에 따른 SI 엔진의 웜업 성능에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Warm-up Performance on SI Engine with Exhaust Heat Recovery System)

  • The effect of exhaust heat recovery system can be evaluated by two well known method. First method is to measure the time duration from engine start under cold coolant temperature till coolant get warmed. By this methodology coolant warming duration can be index of warm-up effect. Second method is to analyze heat balance of the engine during warm-up phase under steady engine operation so that wasted energy by losses such as cooling and exhaust can be index of warm-up effect. This study focused on evaluation of warming-up effect by both methodology above mentioned using 2L SI engine under from idle to 2000rpm steady condition. Results, idle operation showed low heat recovery efficiency but under higher engine speed condition, remarkable heat recovery efficiency improvement was observed. In 2000rpm steady condition, warm-up duration of engine is decreased by exhaust heat recovery system.

  • Urea-SCR system, which converts nitrogen oxides to nitrogen and water in the presence of a reducing agent, usually AdBlue urea solution, is known as one of the powerful NOx reduction systems for mobile as well as stationary applications. For its consistent and reliable operation in mobile applications, such various problems as transient injection, ammonia slip, and freezing in cold weather have to be resolved. In this work, therefore, numerical study on three-dimensional unsteady heating problems were analyzed to understand the melting and heat transfer characteristics such as urea liquid volume fraction, temperature profiles and generated natural convection behavior in urea solution by using the commercial software Fluent 6.3. After validating by comparing numerical and experimental data with pure gallium melting phenomena, numerical experiment for urea melting is conducted with three different coolant heating models named CH1, 2, and 3, respectively. Finally, it can be found that the CH3 model, in which more coolant is concentrated on the lower part of the urea tank, has relatively better melting capability than others in terms of urea quantity of $1{\ell}$ for start-up schedule.

  • 환원제를 이용하여 배기가스 내의 NOx를 질소로 환원시키는 요소수 SCR 시스템은 다른 후처리 장치들 중에서 가장 효율적인 장치로 알려져 있다. 차량에 적용되는 SCR 장치는 32.5wt%의 공융혼합물을 이용한다. 이러한 혼합물의 가장 큰 장점 중의 하나는 $-11.7^{\circ}C$에서 얼기 때문에 추운 환경에서 응고를 피할 수 있다는 것이다. 한편, 이러한 추운 환경에서 시동시 필요한 수용액을 충분히 공급하기 위해서는 고체상을 가열해야 한다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 Fluent 상용코드를 이용하여 3차원 비정상 전산해석을 통한 냉각수 및 전기가열 방식에 따른 고체상 요소수의 시간에 따른 액상비 및 온도분포와 같은 해동 및 열전달 특성을 고찰하였다. 본 연구를 통하여 전기히터 가열 방식이 냉각수 방식보다 효율적임을 확인하였다.

  • The spray behavior of direct-injection spark-ignition(DISI) engines is crucial for obtaining the required mixture distribution for optimal engine combustion. The spray characteristics of DISI engines are affected by many factors such as piston bowl shape, air flow, ambient temperature, injection pressure and fuel temperature. In this study, the effect of fuel temperature on the spray and combustion characteristics was partially investigated for the wall-guided system. The effect of fuel temperature on the fan spray characteristics was investigated in a steady flow rig embodied in a wind tunnel. The shadowgraphy and direct imaging methods were employed to visualize the spray development at different fuel temperatures. The microscopic characteristics of spray were investigated by the particle size measurements using a phase Doppler anemometry(PDA). The effect of injector temperature on the engine combustion characteristics during cold start and warming-up operating conditions was also investigated. Optical single cylinder DISI engine was used for the test, and the successive flame images captured by high speed camera, engine-out emissions and performance data have been analyzed. This could give the way of forming the stable mixture near the spark plug to achieve the stable combustion of DISI engine.
