A fast-response $CO_2$ analyzer has been developed for measuring the $CO_2$ concentration during transient condition of a SI engine. The analyzer consists of the non-dispersive infrared absorption method, electrical chopping system and water cooling system. The analyzer has good repeatability, linearity and permissible drift characteristic. Besides, it showed 18ms of a response to measure the $CO_2$ concentration. The fast-response $CO_2$ analyzer was applied to a single cylinder SI engine and the $CO_2$ emission was examined during engine start. Simultaneously, the standard exhaust gas analyzer, which has slow response time, was used for confirming the accuracy of the exhaust gas analysis using the fast-response $CO_2$ analyzer. The developed analyzer showed much faster responsive characteristic than that of a standard analyzer and made cycle by cycle exhaust gas analysis possible. The transient engine operating characteristics will be estimated from the $CO_2$ concentration of engine-out emissions and engine operating variables.
This paper was investigated the behaviors of the engine and combustion phenomena for various LPG compositions in the semi-return type system, which is not recircurated to LPG tank through furl rail, applied LPi engine during a cold idle condition and including a cold start of the engine. Cyclic HC and NOx emissions were measured at exhaust port to examine their formation mechanical and reduction mechanical with fast response gas analyzers. Various ignition timing is experimented to study the characteristics of combustion phenomena, HC/NOx emissions during fast idle. Also, this study was investigated start delay time, cylinder pressure, HC/NOx emissions, Mass Fraction Burned, starting time to evaluate performance of transient cold startability. Compared to the return type system, the semi-return type system have advantages in point of production cost and equivalent performance of engine starting time and pressure settling time.
Engine-out HC emissions were investigated during engine start. The tests were conducted on a 1.5L, 4-cylinder, 16 valve, multipoint-port-fuel-injection gasoline engine at different coolant temperatures and fuel injection-skip methods; no skip, 1 cycle-skip and 3 cycle-skip. To understand the characteristics of engine-out HC emissions, HC concentration was measured at a exhaust port using a Fast Response Flame Ionization Detector (FRFID). The result show that HC emissions were emitted at the cold coolant temperature much higher than those of the hot coolant. In additions, the fuel injection skip highly reduced engine-out HC emissions. It is convinced that optimized fuel injection skips according to coolant temperatures could be applied to reduce HC emissions during SI engine start.
Finding an alternative fuel and reducing environmental pollution are the main goals for future internal combustion engines. The purpose of this study is to obtain low-emission and high-efficiency by hydrogen enriched LPG fuel in a LPG engine. An experimental study was carried out to obtain fundamental data for the emit HC emission characteristics at cold start of pre-mixed LPG and hydrogen in a LPG engine with various fractions of hydrogen-LPG blends. To maintain equal volume ratio of fuel blend, the amount of HC was decreased as hydrogen was gradually added. The results showed that as hydrogen increases, in-cylinder pressure increased. Also emission of unburned hydrocarbon (HC) is sharply decreased.

This study presents the nano-sized particle emission characteristics from a small turbocharged common rail diesel engine applicable to prime and auxiliary machines on marine vessels. The experiments were conducted under dynamic engine operating conditions, such as steady-state, cold start, and transient conditions. The particle number and size distributions were analyzed with a high resolution PM analyzer. The diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) had an insignificant effect on the reduction in particle number, but particle number emissions were drastically reduced by 3 to 4 orders of magnitude downstream of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) at various steady conditions. Under high speed and load conditions, the particle filtering efficiency was decreased by the partial combustion of trapped particles inside the DPF because of the high exhaust temperature caused by the increased particle number concentration. Retarded fuel injection timing and higher EGR rates led to increased particle number emissions. As the temperature inside the DPF increased from $25^{\circ}C$ to $300^{\circ}C$, the peak particle number level was reduced by 70% compared to cold start conditions. High levels of nucleation mode particle generation were found in the deceleration phases during the transient tests.
Hydrocarbon adsorber is considered as a promising technology to reduce cold start HCs in automotive exhaust gas. In this study, three in-line adsorber systems were tried to reduce the cold start emission. To check the basic characteristics of adsorber converters, surface areas, TPD and TP A were examined after a hydrothermal aging. Also idle engine bench was used to find the adsorption and desorption capabilities of the adsorber systems at cold start. Finally a practicability of the adsorber systems for the LEV achievement was checked with FTP test on a 2.0 D MIT vehicle. The results of this study indicate that hydrocarbon adsorber system is one of the promising passive technologies to meet the ULEV regulation.
Among the recent research ideas to reduce hydrocarbon emissions emitted from SI engines till light-off of catalyst since cold start are those exploiting non-thermal plasma technique and photo-catalyst that draws recent attention by virtue of its successful application to practical use to clean up the atmosphere using the feature of its relative independence on temperature. Based on the previous research results obtained with model exhaust gases using an experimental emissions reduction system that utilizes the non-thermal plasma and photo-catalyst technique, further investigation was conducted on a production N/A 1.5 liter DOHC engine during cold start to warm-up. For the effects of non-thermal plasma-photocatalyst combined reactor, 10% concentration reduction was achieved with the fuel component paraffins, and the large increase in non-fuel paraffinic components and acetylene concentrations were similar to those of base condition. However the absolute value was locally a bit higher than those of base condition since the products was made from the dissociation and decomposition of highly branched paraffins by plasma-photocatalyst reactor. Olefinic components were highly decomposed by about 75%, due to these excellent decompositions of olefins which have relatively high MIR values, and the SR value was 1.87 that is 30% reduction from that of base condition, then, the photochemical reactivity was lowered.
Effect of secondary air injection (SAI) on hydrocarbon reduction has been investigated in a single cylinder Sl engine operating at cold-steady/cold-start conditions. The hydrocarbon emission and exhaust gas temperature with and without catalytic converter were compared with continuous and synchronized SAIs, which injected secondary air intermittently into exhaust port. Effects of SAI location, SAI pressure, SAI timing, and location of catalytic converter have been investigated and the results are compared for both SAls with base condition. At cold-steady condition, the rate of HC reduction increased as the location of SAI was closer to the exhaust valve for both synchronized and continuous SAls. The emission of HC decreased with increasing exhaust-A/F when it was rich, and was relatively insensitive when it was lean. The timing of SAI in synchronized SAI had significant effect on HC reduction and exhaust gas temperature and the synchronized SAI was found to be more effective in HC reduction and exhaust gas temperature compared to the continuous SAI . At cold-start condition, when the catalytic converter was located 20 cm downstream from the exhaust port exit, the catalytic converter warm-up period for both SAls decreased by about 50%, and the accumulated hydrocarbon emission during the first 120 s decreased about by 56% and 22% with the synchronized and continuous SAIs, respectively, compared to that of the base condition.
Unburned hydrocarbon (UBHC) emissions from gasoline engines remain a primary engineering research and development concern due to stricter emission regulations. Gasoline engines produce more UBHC emissions during cold start and warm-up than during any other stage of operation, because of insufficient fuel-air mixing, particularly in view of the additional fuel enrichment used for early starting. Impingement of fuel droplets on the cylinder wall is a major source of UBHC and a concern for oil dilution. This paper describes an experimental study that was carried out to investigate the distribution and 'footprint' of fuel droplets impinging on the cylinder wall during the intake stroke under engine starting conditions. Injectors having different targeting and atomization characteristics were used in a 4-Valve engine with optical access to the intake port and combustion chamber. The spray and targeting performance were characterized using high-speed visualization and Phase Doppler Interferometry techniques. The fuel droplets impinging on the port, cylinder wall and piston top were characterized using a color imaging technique during simulated engine start-up from room temperature. Highly absorbent filter paper was placed around the circumference of the cylinder liner and on the piston top to collect fuel droplets during the intake strokes. A small amount of colored dye, which dissolves completely in gasoline, was used as the tracer. Color density on the paper, which is correlated with the amount of fuel deposited and its distribution on the cylinder wall, was measured using image analysis. The results show that by comparing the locations of the wetted footprints and their color intensities, the influence of fuel injection and engine conditions can be qualitatively and quantitatively examined. Fast FID measurements of UBHC were also performed on the engine for correlation to the mixture formation results.
Most of the pollutants from passenger cars are emitted during the cold-transient phase of the FTP-75 test. In order to reduce the exhaust emissions during the cold-transient period, it is essential to warm up the catalyst as fast as possible after the engine starts, and the Unburned Exhaust Gas Ignition (UEGI) technology was developed through our previous studies to help close-coupled catalytic converters (CCC) reach the light-off temperature within a few seconds after cold-start. The UEGI system operates by igniting the unburned exhaust mixture by glow plugs installed upstream of the catalyst. The flame generates a high amount of heat, and if the heat is concentrated on a specific area of monolith surface, then thermal crack or failure of the monolith could occur. Therefore, it is very important to monitor the temperature distribution in the CCC during the UEGI operation, so the local temperatures in the monolith were measured using thermocouples. Experimental results showed that the temperature of CCC rises faster with the UEGI technology, and the CCC reaches the light-off temperature earlier than the baseline case. Under the conditions tested, the light-off time of the baseline case was 62 seconds, compared with 33 seconds for the UEGI case. The peak temperature is well under the thermal melting condition, and temperature distribution is not so severe as to consider thermal stress. It is noted that the UEGI technology is an effective method to warm up the catalyst with a small amount of thermal stress during the cold start period.
