  • STS 304 steel is used as pressure vessel material, and although it exhibits excellent mechanical characteristics at a low temperature, it is heavier than other materials. To address this issue, a method using cold-stretching techniques for STS 304 can be applied. In this study, a cold-stretching part and welded joint specimen were directly obtained from a cold-stretching pressure vessel manufactured according to ASME code. Fatigue crack propagation tests were carried out at room temperature and $-170^{\circ}C$ using the compliance method for stress ratios of 0.1 and 0.5. The results indicate that crack growth rate of the welded joint is higher than that of the cold-stretching part within the same stress intensity factor range. The outcome of this work is expected to serve as a basis for the development of a cold-stretched STS 304 pressure vessel.

  • Resource development is needed in order to develop the industry. However, because resources are running out, there is a growing interest in the arctic regions. If you want to develop resources in cold regions, it is necessary to understand the environment there and it should be a priority to secure proper technology for construction. In particular, thaw settlement, which frequently occur in Arctic regions, have a fatal effect on essential pipeline needed to transport resources. Therefore, it is important to analyze how piping will be impacted by thaw settlement. In this study, we developed 3-D FEM model in order to analyze the influence of the buried depth of the pipe at the time of thaw settlement. We analyzed a displaced pipe which is subjected to stress and considered Elasto-plastic, using the finite element analysis according to these Arctic environments.

  • Vortex tube is the device that can separate small particles from the compressed gas, as well as compressed gas into hot and cold flow. In this study, computational approach has been performed to analyze the characteristics of the vortex tube. Energy separation characteristics of the vortex tube has been tested for various geometric design parameters. For the given conditions, it is found that as the tube is lengthened, hot end temperature is reduced but cold end temperature does not influenced much. As the orifice diameter decreases, cold end temperature decreases. Also, as hot gas fraction increases, hot end temperature decreases. The results from this study can be used for the basic design parameter of the $CO_2$ reduction device.

  • The liquefaction to produce LNG (liquefied natural gas) is the only practical way for mass transportation of natural gas across oceans, which accompanies considerable energy consumption in LNG plants. Power generation is one of the effective utilization ways of LNG cold energy which evolves during the vaporization process of LNG with sea water. In this work, performance analysis of two cold energy generation processes, direct expansion and organic Rankine cycles, were carried out by using Aspen HYSYS simulation. The results show that the performance of the organic Rankine cycle is superior to the direct expansion.

  • Stars form exclusively in cold and dense molecular clouds. To fully understand star formation processes, it is hence a key to investigate how molecular clouds form out of the surrounding diffuse atomic gas. With an aim of shedding light in the process of the atomic-to-molecular transition in the interstellar medium, we analyze Arecibo HI emission and absorption spectral pairs along with TRAO/PMO 12CO(1-0) emission spectra toward 58 lines of sight probing in and around molecular clouds in the solar neighborhood, i.e., Perseus, Taurus, and California. 12CO(1-0) is detected from 19 out of 58 lines of sight, and we report the physical properties of HI (e.g., central velocity, spin temperature, and column density) in the vicinity of CO. Our preliminary results show that the velocity difference between the cold HI (Cold Neutral Medium or CNM) and CO (median ~ 0.7 km/s) is on average more than a factor of two smaller than the velocity difference between the warm HI (Warm Neutral Medium or WNM) and CO (median ~ 1.7 km/s). In addition, we find that the CNM tends to become colder (median spin temperature ~ 43 K) and abundant (median CNM fraction ~ 0.55) as it gets closer to CO. These results hints at the evolution of the CNM in the vicinity of CO, implying a close association between the CNM and molecular gas. Finally, in order to examine the role of HI in the formation of molecular gas, we compare the observed CNM properties to the theoretical model by Bialy & Sternberg (2016), where the HI column density for the HI-to-H2 transition point is predicted as a function of density, metallicity, and UV radiation field. Our comparison shows that while the model reproduces the observations reasonably well on average, the observed CNM components with high column densities are much denser than the model prediction. Several sources of this discrepancy, e.g., missing physical and chemical ingredients in the model such as the multi-phase ISM, non-equilibrium chemistry, and turbulence, will be discussed.

  • When Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) is vaporized into NG for industrial and household usage, tremendous cold energy was transferred from LNG to seawater during phase-changing process. This heat exchanger loop is not only a waste of huge cold energy, but will cause thermal pollution to the coastal fishery area also when cold water was re-injected into the sea. In this study, an innovation design has been performed to reclaim the cold energy for -35 to $62^{\circ}C$ refrigerated warehouse. Conventionally, this was done by installing mechanical refrigeration systems, necessitating tremendous electrical power to drive temperature. A closed loop LNG heat exchangers in series was designed to replace the mechanical or vapor-compression refrigeration cycle by process simulator. The process simulation software of PRO II with provision has been used to simulate this process for various conditions, what to effect on cold energy and used energy for re-liquefaction and evaporation process. In addition, through analysis the effect of the change of LNG supply pressure on sensible and latent heat, optimum operational conditions was suggested for LNG cold energy warehouse.

  • U shape multitube heat exchanger was equipped in the flue to recover the exhaust heat from the boiler system. The fluids of the exhaust heat recovery equipment were the flue gas as the hot fluid, and the water as the cold fluid. The flow geometry of the fluids was cross flow - two pass, the hot fluid being mixed and the cold fluid unmixed. The results of the theoretical and the experimental analysis and the economic evaluation are summarized as follows. 1) The heat exchanger effectiveness and the temperature efficiency of the hot fluid were about 35% when the fuel consumption rate was 140 - 150 L/15min. The temperature efficiency for the cold fluid ranged from 3.0% to 4.5%. The insulation efficiency ranged from 85% to 98%, which was better than the KS air preheater insulation efficiency of 90%. 2) The relationship between the fuel consumption rate, F, and the outlet temperature, $T_{h2}$, of the flue gas from the heat exchanger was $T_{h2}$ = 0.927F + 110. In order to prevent the low temperature corrosion from the coagulation of $SO_3$, it is necessary to maintain the fuel consumption rate above 82 L/15min. 3) The ratio of the exhaust heat from the boiler system to the total energy consumption was about 14.5%. With the installation of the exhaust heat recovery equipment, the energy recovery ratio to the exhaust heat was about 25%. Accordingly, about 3.6% of the total fuel consumption was estimated to be saved. 4) Economic analysis indicated that the installation of the exhaust heat recovery equipment was feasible to save the energy, because the capital reocvery period was only 10 months when the fuel consumption rate was 80 L/15min. 4 months when it was 160 L/15min. 5) Based on the theoretical and the experimental analysis, it was estimated to save the energy of about 18 million Won per year, if four heat exchangers are installed in a factory. 6) A further study is recommended to identify the relationship among the flow rate of the exhaust gas, the size of the heat exchanger and the capacity of the air preheater. For a maximum heat recovery from the exhaust gas an automatic control system is required to control the flow rate of the cold fluid depending on the boiler load.

  • The global warming of the Korean Peninsula proceeds most rapidly in the world and its abnormal climate is more deepening. In the result of the surged electricity consumption by intense heat of summer and severe cold of winter, electricity supply and demand status is in hard situation. Currently, the supply of natural gas is increased because natural gas has the lowest greenhouse-gas emissions among the existed fossil fuel. Natural gas cooling has a lot of advantage such as decreasing electricity peak, reducing construction expenses in additional power plant, operating natural gas storage facilities efficiently, and playing a role as distributed generations. Therefore, this study analyzes the economic feasibilities of gas cooling as an alternative for electric power load management.
