This paper presents a thorough investigation into the structural performance of cold-formed steel column bases using double lipped C sections with bolted moment connections. A total of four column base tests with different connection configurations were carried out, and it was found that section failure under combined bending and shear was always critical. Moreover, the proposed column bases were demonstrated to be structurally efficient attaining moment resistances close to those of the connected sections. In order to examine the structural behaviour of the column base connections, a finite element model was established using shell and spring elements to model the sections and the bolted fastenings respectively. Both material and geometrical non-linearities were incorporated, and comparison between the test and the numerical results was presented in details. The design rules originally developed for bolted moment connections between lapped Z sections were adopted and re-formulated for the design of column base connections after careful calibration against the test data. Comparison on co-existing moments and shear forces at the critical cross-sections of the column bases was fully presented. It was shown that the proposed design and analysis method was structurally adequate to predict the failure loads under combined bending and shear for column bases with similar connection configurations.

In this study cold rolling process for the irregular cross-sectional shape has been investigated. The product analyzed in present study is the steel cutter, which is frequently used to cut the desired shape on leather. Because steel cutter always has a irregular cross-section, after rolling process the workpiece is severely bended to every direction. The bending of the workpiece affects the processed performed after rolling such as heat treatment and grinding, then that of the workpiece becomes more severe. In this study, therefore, to prevent the bending of the workpiece to the left and right sides. rigid-plastic finite element method has been utilized and in order to find optimal roll geometry rapidly, one dimensional equal interval search technique has been also introduced. By using both rigid plastic finite element method and optimum technique, cold rolling process for the irregular cross-sectional shape has been successfully investigated.
A study was made of the effect of cold working and stabilizing temperature on the fatigue properties of Aluminum alloy 5083. The amount of cold working ranged from 14% to 35% and stabilizing temperature was 120.deg. C-160.deg. C. Rotary bending fatigue test was carried out, and it was found that 1) E specimen that had been cold worked by the cold reduction of 35% and stabilized at 160.deg. C for 2 hours was showed the most excellent fatigue limit and endurance ratio and, 2) By the results of the between crack propagation behavior and stress intensity factor, E specimen was showed the better resistance to fatigue crack growth than others.
In this study, texture development and bending characteristics of strong {0002} textured were observed. AZ31 Mg alloy sheets were prepared along the angle of 0 and 12.5 degrees to the lolling direction or {0002} texture. Prepared samples with different angles to the rolling direction were rolled at room temperature condition and after subsequent heat treatment to investigate texture with x-ray diffractometer, respectively The specimen having along the angles of 0 degree to rolling direction shows the highest load and 12.5 degrees specimen shows the highest displacement among any other specimens in bending test.
This paper provides theoretical and experimental results to verify the crashworthiness of FH32 high-strength steel for arctic marine structures against ice impact. Assuming that side-shell structures of the Korean arctic research vessel, ARAON, with ice-notation PL10, collide with sheet ice, one-third-scale test specimens with a single transverse frame are manufactured. Impact-bending tests were conducted using a rigid steel striker that mimics sheet ice. Drop height was calculated by considering the speed at which sheet ice is rammed. Prior to impact-bending tests, tensile coupon tests were conducted at various temperatures. The impact-bending tests were carried out using test specimens fully fixed to the inside bottom frame of a cold chamber. The drop-weight velocity and test specimen deformation speed were measured using a high-speed camera and digital image correlation analysis (DICA). Numerical simulations were carried out under the same conditions as the impact-bending tests. The simulation results were in agreement with the test results, and strain rate was a key factor for the accuracy of numerical simulations.
Local buckling is a major consideration in the design of thin-walled cold-formed steel sections. The main effect of local buckling in plate elements under longitudinal compressive stresses is to cause a redistribution of the stresses in which the greatest portion of the load is carried near the supporting edges of the plate junctions. The redistribution produces increased stresses near the plate junctions and high bending stresses as a result of plate flexure, leading to ultimate loads below the squash load of the section. In singly symmetric cross-sections, the redistribution of longitudinal stress caused by local buckling also produces a shift of the line of action of internal force (shift of effective centroid). The fundamentally different effects of local buckling on the behaviour of pin-ended and fixed-ended singly symmetric columns lead to inconsistencies in traditional design approaches. The paper describes local buckling and shift of effective centroid of thin-walled cold-formed steel channel columns. Tests of channel columns have been described. The experimental local buckling loads were compared with the theoretical local buckling loads obtained using an elastic finite strip buckling analysis. The shift of the effective centroid was also compared with the shift predicted using the Australian/New Zealand and American specifications for cold-formed steel structures.
Work roll wear in the cold rolling of mild steel strip is strongly affected by rolling materials, rolling conditions such as roll arrangement in the cold rolling mill and lubrication. The tests were performed to find the effects of roll arrangement n the cold rolling mill on the work roll wear under the same lubricating conditions. The obtained results are as follows:If the distance of cold rolling is about 60km, the surface roughness of its was reduced by half(Ra 0.49${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) and Pc(peak count) also was decreased to 60 ea/cm.It is easier for CC(Continuous casting) to make a slip on rolling than IC(Ingot casting). It is due to surface mirror in which first residual product appears and iron powder included Al2O3 is sticked. Because bending degree of 4Hi-rolling mill is higher than 6Hi-rolling mill, the first surface mirror was occurred to its center-point which is loaded strongly. 6Hi-rolling mill shape-controlled by intermediate roll doesn't need the initial crown to work roll. Therefore, fatigue and wear would appear a little bit.
In this study, it was investigated the influence of cold rolling factors on the edge drop. Edge drop was highly affected by the shape of work roll, the amount of work roll shift and the crown of hot strip, but the effect of bending force at the front stand was relatively small. The used numerical model was examined by comparing to the result of measured field data, and it showed a qualitative agreement with each other.
