  • A bending actuator using zigzag type shape memory alloy springs has been fabricated and characterized. The fabricated millimeter-sized actuator has outer diameter of 3.0mm and inner diameter of 2.0mm. The zigzag type spring is more suitable for thin wall type actuator because the zigzag type spring has a planar structure comparing with the coil type spring which has a three-dimensional structure. The measured characteristics of the fabricated bending actuator show the possibility of practical application to micro active bending catheters.

  • The aim of this study is to provide fundamental information for the development of Semi-Active Damper Using Magnetic fluid. To achieve the aim, the damping effect of magnetic fluid is investigated by experiments that the diameter of inner circular bar and the input amplitude were varied in the magnetic field generated by the permanent magnet and the electromagnet coil. From the study, the following conclusive remarks can be made. As the diameter of inner circular bar and input amplitude increase, the damping effect is improved. This is explained by the fact that as the contact area between inner circular bar and magnetic fluid increases, the increase of friction lowers kinematic energy. If the magnetic field is generated, the damping effect is improved. This is explained the assumption that as the intensity of magnetic fluid particle increases, there is virtual mass phenomenon.

  • Bio-implantable devices such as heart pacers, gastric pacers and drug-delivery systems require power for carrying out their intended functions. These devices are usually powered through a battery implanted with the system or are wired to an external power source. This paper describes an inductive power transmission link, which was developed for an implantable stimulator for direct stimulation of denervated muscles. The carrier frequency is around 1MHz, the transmitter coil has a diameter of 46mm, and the implant coil is 46mm. Data transmission to the implant with amplitude shift keying (ASK) and back to the transmitter with passive telemetry can be added without major design changes. We chose the range of coil spacing (2 to 30mm) to care for lateral misalignment, as it occurs in practical use. If the transmitter coil has a well defined and reliable position in respect to the implant, a smaller working range might be sufficient. Under these conditions the link can be operated in fixed frequency mode, and reaches even higher efficiencies of up to 37%. The link transmits a current of 50 mA over a distance range of 2-15 mm with an efficiency of more than 20% in tracking frequency. The efficiency of the link was optimized with different approaches. A class E transmitter was used to minimize losses of the power stage. The geometry and material of the transmitter coil was optimized for maximum coupling. Phase lock techniques were used to achieve frequency tracking, keeping the transmitter optimally tuned at different coupling conditions caused by coil distance variations.

  • The purpose of this paper is to design high-order (or radial) surface gradient coil (SGC), which can provide multi-dimensional spatial selection. Although the spatial Selection with High-Order gradienT (SHOT) can provide a 2-D selection with only one selective RF pulse, the high-order gradient pro- duced by conventional cylindrical-shape coils has not been clinically useful due to the large selection size caused by the limited radial gradient intensity. However, by using the proposed high-order SGCs located near the imaging region, the size of volume selection can be reduced to a clinically useflll size of 1-2 cm in diameter by applying stronger radial gradient field with much less gradient driving power. So far radial SGCs have been designed by using the field component method and may cause distortion in the selection shapes. In this paper, by using the target field approach for the coil design, selected volumes became almost circular. A 40 cm-by-40 cm $z^2$_surface gradient coil has been designed and implemented by using the target field approach. Phantom and volunteer studies have been performed Experimental results using spatially localized MRI show good agreement to the theoretically predicted behavior.

  • The aim of the study is to provide fundamental information for the development of magneticfluid actuator. To achieve the aim, the force and dynamic characteristics of magenticfluid are investigated by experiment for the various of tube diameter, height and position of magneticfluid column in magneticfield according to supplied voltage of solenoid coil, wave form and frquency. From this study, actuating force of magneticfluid is generated by magneticfield. The magnitude of force increases as the intensity of magneticfield becomes strong and the center of magneticfield becomes lower than the center of magneticfluid column. And the force of magneticfluid relates to the volume of magneticfluid more than the height and diameter. The response delay time decreases as the height of magmeticfluid more than the height and diameter. The response delay time decrease as the height of magneticfluid column becomes longer and the center of magneticfield becomes lower than the center of magniticfluid column. But, the approaching time increases as supplied voltage becomes higher and the center of magneticfiled becomes higher than the center of magniticfluid column. The frequency generating maximum force is 1Hz and the critical frequency is about 4Hz.

  • Since the strand-to-strand type joint far CICC (Cable-In-Conduit Conductor) is small in size and has low DC resistance, it is expected to be useful type fur a superconducting magnet system which had a compact structure like the KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) coil system. The DC resistance is changed according to the distribution patterns of strands in cables connected together in the joint. A commercial code was used for the calculation of the DC resistance. With the decrease of outer diameter of the Joint, Which means the increase of strand volume fraction in the joint, the calculated DC resistance decrease rapidly and non-lineally. The variation of resistance depends mainly on the volume fraction of solder which has higher resistivity than copper. The resistance decrease inversely with the increase of the length of the joint. The resistance increase with increase of number of triplets in each stack contacted with that of another terminal cable. In case of the strand-to-strand joint that has 62mm of outer diameter, 52mm of inner diameter, 100mm of overlap length, and four triplets in each stack, the calculated DC resistance is less than 1 n-Ohm.

  • This study measured the velocity of magnetic particles inside the power generation using external heat sources. Single Plane Illumination Microscopy (SPIM) was used to measure magnetic particles that are simultaneously affected by bubbly flow and magnetic field. It has the advantage of reducing errors due to particle superposition by illuminating the thin light sheet. The hydraulic diameter of the power generation is 3mm. Its surface is covered with a coil with a diameter of 0.3 mm. The average diameter of a magnetic particle is 200nm. The excitation and emission wavelengths are 530 and 650nm, respectively. In order to find out the flow characteristics, a total of four velocity fields were calculated in wide and narrow gap air bubbles, between the wall and the air bubble and just below the air bubble. Magnetic particles showed up to 8.59% velocity reduction in the wide gap between air bubbles due to external magnetic field.

  • We studied the compact anode design to develop 100 kW rotating anode X-ray tube with large focal spot 1.2 mm, small focal spot 0.6 mm and tube voltage 150 kV for large hospital digital radiography using computer thermal simulation. The larger thermal radiation effect in a high vacuum can reduce the temperature of anode so the method to increase the surface area of anode is investigated. The anode has the multi-tier shape at the back side of TZM body of anode and also bigger diameter of anode. The number of multi-tiers was varied from 6 to 15 and the diameter of anode was also varied from ${\Phi}74$ to ${\Phi}82$. From ANSYS transient thermal simulation result, we could obtain $1056.4^{\circ}C$ anode maximum temperature when applying 100 kW input power at 0.1 second on target focal track which is less than $1091^{\circ}C$ of the conventional 75 kW X-ray tube with reduced anode weight by 15.5% than the conventional anode. The compact anode of reduced anode weight is able to improve the unwanted noise when the rotor is rotating at high-speed and also reduce the rotational torque which the cost effective stator-coil is possible. It is believed that the anode with 15 ea multi-tiers using ${\Phi}82$ can satisfy with the specification of the anode heat capacity. From the results of this paper, it has been confirmed that the proposed compact anode can be used as the anode of 100 kW rotating anode X-ray tube for digital radiography.

  • The axial-flow type blood pump(XVAD) which has been developed in our group consists of mechanical parts (an impeller, a diffuser and a flow straightener) and electrical parts (a motor and a magnetic bearing). The magnetic bearing system fully levitates the impeller to remove mechanical coupling with other parts of the pump with constant gap, which needs non-contact type gap sensing. Conventional gap sensors are too large to be adopted to the implantable axial -flow type blood pump. Thus, in this paper, the compact eddy current type gap sensor system proper for the implantable axial-flow type blood pump was developed and its performance was evaluated in vitro. The developed eddy current type gap sensor system is a transformer type and has a differential probe. Sensor coil(probe) has small dimensions(6 mm diameter, 2 mm thickness) and its optimal inductance was determined as 0.068 mH for the measurement range of $0\sim3mm$. It could be manufactured with 130 turns of the 0.04 mm diameter copper coil. The characteristics of the developed eddy current type gap sensor system was evaluated by in vitro experiment. At experiment, it showed satis(actory performance to apply to the magnetic bearing system of the XVAD. It could measure the gap up to 3mm, but the linearity was decreased at the range of $1.8\sim3.0mm$. Moreover, it showed no difference in different media such as the water and the blood at the temperature range of $35\sim40^{\circ}C$.
