Fracture in the titanium carbonitride-metal composites occurs by crack propagation through the carbonitride grains or in the interfaces. Thus, intrinsic properties of the carbonitride need to be enhanced and the interfaces should be also modified to coherent structure to strengthen the composites. Especially, interfacial structure can be the main factor to determine the mechanical properties of titanium carbonitride-metal composites because the interfaces between carbonitride grains and metallic phase are weak parts due to heterogeneous nature of carbonitride and metallic phase. In this paper, methodologies for improving the interfacial structure of titanium carbonitride-metal composites are suggested. Total area of the interfaces can be reduced using solid solution type carbonitrides as raw materials instead of a mixture of various carbonitrides in the composites. Also, synthesis of titanium carbonitride-metal composite powders and the low-temperature sintering of the composite powders for short time can be the way for formation of coherent interfaces. The sintering of the composite powders for short time at low temperature can reduce the potential of formation of interfaces by dissolution and precipitation of carbonitride in the liquid metal. As a result of formation of coherent boundaries due to low-temperature and short-time sintering, interfaces between titanium carbonitride grains and metallic phase have the favorable structure for the enhanced fracture toughness. It is believed that the low-temperature sintering of solid solution type composite powders for short time can be the way to improve the low toughness of the titanium carbonitride-metal composites.

A new coherent detection scheme with data based channel estimation (DBCE) for CDMA/BP(staggered burst pilot in parallel) channel structure is proposed. Because the pilot burst initiates DBCE operation periodically it is shown to be remarkably stable to Gaussian noise and Doppler shift with proper parameter settings. In our own system parameter setting, there is a negligible loss(0.068 dB) in $E_{b}/N_{o}$ by the introduction of the burst pilot. When compared with an ideal coherent detection, the required $E_{b}/N_{o}$ on Doppler shift corresponding to the speed of 160Km/H is degraded less that 2.0 dB. the burst pilot can be implemented without complexity even though some extra correlators are needed for DBCE. This improvement is superior to the previously coherent CDMA detectors with external or internal pilot.

The effects of thermal stratification on the flow past a heated circular cylinder with various heating rates were examined in a wind tunnel. Turbulent intensities, r.m.s.values of temperature and turbulent convective heat flux distributions in the cylinder wakes with and without thermal stratification were measured by using a hot-wire and cold-wire combination probe. The phase averaging method was also used to estimate coherent contributions to the turbulent flow field in the near wake. The results show that the scalar mixing process is very different according to the mean temperature fields especially in the upper part of the wake. The coherent structure of the temperature field makes a large contribution to the time mean value like velocity components. However, the coherency of the temperature fluctuation is very different with the change of mean temperature fields, though the velocity coherent motions are quite similar in all experimental conditions.
This experiment has been carried out to find the structure of turbulent boundary layer with instantaneous velocity fields obtained in stream-wall-normal planes using a stereo-PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) method. And it has been measured perpendicular plane and horizontal plane with hairpin vortex structure by Reynolds number change and made third dimension shape for section of horizontal plane through stereo-PIV. In the outer layer hairpin vortices occur in streamwise-aligned packets that propagate with small velocity dispersion. A streaky structure is composed of counter-rotating vortex. According as y+ increases, streaky structure's interval space decrease, and it shows that hairpin shape of prior research is vertified. The objective of the present research is to gain a better understanding of coherent structures in the outer of wall turbulence by experimentally examining coherent structures.

Decades of studies of geophysical flow have unveiled that the flow downstream of obstacles in stratified flow consists of attached wake and strong gravity waves, or separated, fluctuating wake and persistent late wakes. Among unique and interesting characteristics of the stratified flow past obstacles is the generation of coherent vortex in the late wake far downstream of the object. Unlike in homogeneous fluid, the flow field downstream self-develops coherent vortex even after diminishing of the near wake, no matter how small the stratification is. This paper present a computational approach to simulate the generation of the coherent vortex structure in the late wake of a moving sphere submerged in weakly stratified fluid. The results are in consistent with several experimental observations and the vortex stretching mechanism is employed to explain the process of coherence.

The snapshot method is introduced to approximate the coherent structures of planar forcing jet flow. The numerical simulation of flow field is simulated by discrete vortex method. With snapshot method we could treat the data efficiently and approximate coherent structures inhered in the planer jet flow. By forcing the jet at a sufficient amplitude and at a well-chosen frequency, the paring can be controlled in the region of the jet. Finally we expressed the underlying coherent structures of planar jet flow in the minimum number of modes by Karhunen-Loeve transformation in order to understand jet flow and to make the information storage and management in computers easier.
Using coherence theory, the partially coherent flat-topped vortex hollow beam is introduced. The analytical equation for propagation of a partially coherent flat-topped vortex hollow beam in turbulent atmosphere is derived, using the extended Huygens-Fresnel diffraction integral formula. The influence of coherence length, beam order N, topological charge M, and structure constant of the turbulent atmosphere on the average intensity of this beam propagating in turbulent atmosphere are analyzed using numerical examples.

An experimental study in a recirculating water channel was carried out to investigate the effect of large coherent structures to the skin friction on a flat plate. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique was used to quantify characteristic features of coherent structures growing to the boundary layer. In the PIV measurement, it is difficult to calculate the friction velocity near the wall region due to laser deflection and uncertainty so that Clauser fitting method at the logarithmic region was adopted to compute the friction velocity and compared with the one directly measured by the dynamometer. With changing the free-stream velocity from 0.5 m/s to 1.0 m/s, the activity of coherent structures in the logarithmic region was increased over three times in terms of Reynolds stress. The flow field was separated by Variable Interval Time Averaging (VITA) technique into the weak and the strong structure case depending on the existence large coherent structures in order to validate its effectiveness. The stream-wise velocity fluctuation was scanned through at the boundary thickness whether it had a large deviation from background flow. With coherent structures connected from near-wall to the boundary layer, mean wall shear stress was higher than that of weak structure case. Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) analysis was also applied to compare the energy budget between them at each free-stream velocity.

An optical coherent system is considered for the next-generation optical access networks in enhancing the data rate and transmission distance. In this system, however, I/Q amplitude imbalance may occur at several parts of the system, leading to serious performance degradation. Asymmetric structure of a coherent receiver at the location of subscriber is one of the sources of I/Q imbalance. Therefore, this imbalance parameters must be removed or compensated to secure the transmission performance. In this paper, the source of I/Q amplitude imbalance is analyzed, and then the way to compensate for the imbalance at the receiver side is suggested. Performance after the compensation is estimated using simulation.

Double coaxial are jets(annular and coaxial air jets) between which propane gas is fed was selected to study the structure of diffusion flames in turbulent shear flow. Schlieren and direct photographs are taken to visualize the flame structure. Mean and fluctuating temperatures and ion currents were measured to investigate the macroscopic and the instantaneous flame structure. The objective of this study is to understand the interaction between combustion and mixing process especially in the transition region of turbulent shear flow. The investigation reported in this paper focuses on the macroscopic and the instantaneous structures of three flames obtained. The increased mixing effect resulting from increase of Reynolds number of central air jet makes the flame bluish and short. When the velocity of surrounding air stream is higher than that of central air jet, the instantaneous flame structure is composed of coherent structure. It is considered that the flame structure of transitional region of mixing layer depends on the structure of mixing layer of non-reacting conditions.
