This study examined the effect of the results of ascertaining prediction on cognitive conflict and conceptual change by physics achievement. The participants of this study were 186 11th graders. They answered a pretest composed of two items, and through a demonstration on either of the two pretest items, they ascertained whether their predictions were correct or not. The cognitive conflicts were measured with CCLT. After brief instructive treatment, a posttest was conducted to measure the degree of conceptual change. The students who ascertained that their predictions were incorrect generated more cognitive conflicts and conceptual changes than those who ascertained they were correct. In addition, cases in which student physics achievement was low were found to produce more meaningful results of ascertaining predictions on cognitive conflict and conceptual change.
The purposes of this study is to identify the misconceptions on atmospheric pressure and to investigate the effect of conceptual change of the cognitive conflict teaching models. The subjects are 184 students in girls' high school and divided into the controlled and test group. Before instruction on atmospheric pressure concept, their concept types were identified and their conceptual changes were compared after instruction by the traditional and the cognitive conflict teaching models. The results of this study are as follows; 1 ) The students' understanding level on the atmospheric pressure was low before instruction and they had some misconceptions. But the concept levels related to their everyday life experieces and memorized concept were high. 2) The cognitive conflict teaching model were more effective than the traditional teaching model in the formation of atmospheric pressure concept. 3) Though there were some differences among the test items, the cognitive conflict teaching model was identified to be more effective than the traditional teaching model in terms of the durability of atmospheric pressure concept.
This study examined the effects of a dual-task virtual reality program on the cognitive function and EEG for patients with mild cognitive impairment. A dual-task virtual reality program was performed in the experimental groups while conventional occupational therapy was carried out in the control group for 30 minutes per session, which was done five days per week for 6 weeks. The results were as follows. First, the memory of the cognitive function and balance was improved significantly in the experimental group with the dual-task virtual reality program compared to the control group with the traditional occupational therapy. Second, EEG was also increased significantly in the experimental group compared to the control group. The results of this study suggest that the dual-task virtual reality program was an effective treatment method for the elderly with mild cognitive impairment and would be a cornerstone of basic data that will be helpful to those suffering from a range of diseases.

The purpose of this study was to find the effect of these variables on the duration of the momentum effect. To examine the momentum effect for gravitational field concepts, an intensive time series design was used. We collected data every day except Sundays and holidays for 50 days; 5 days for baseline, 30 days for intervention, and 15 days for the follow up We adopted cognitive levels and styles as students characteristics and two item characteristics(quantity versus quality, and word versus picture) as the item representation patterns. In this study, the momentum effect was influenced by students characteristics and item representation patterns. The results showed that two variables, cognitive style and quantity/quality, were the most influential factors for the duration of momentum effect. Field independent students showed a longer duration than field dependent students did. In addition, students showed a longer duration in quality items than in quantity items. However, students cognitive levels(formal or preformal) and word/picture presentations seemed to have relatively weak effect on the duration of the momentum effect.

In this study, the relationships among learners' cognitive variables, motivational variables, and conceptual understandings in learning with analogy were investigated. The instruments regarding analogical reasoning ability, field dependence-independence, mental capacity, and logical thinking ability were administered. Some subtests (self-efficacy, expectancy, self-concept of ability, and value) of the Patterns of Adaptive Learning Survey were administered. After students learned with a worksheet that included analogy, a conception test regarding 'stoichiometry that included limiting reagent' was also administered. It was found that learners' conceptual understandings were significantly correlated with the logical thinking ability and the field dependence-independence among the cognitive variables, and the self-efficacy and the self-concept of ability among the motivational variables. The multiple regression analysis of the cognitive variables on conceptual understandings revealed that the logical thinking ability was the most significant predictor. The field dependence-independence also had predictive power. In the analysis of the motivational variables, the self concept of ability was the only significant predictor.

Around the world, fermentation of foods has been adopted over many generations, primarily due to their commercial significance with enriched flavors and high-profile nutrients. The increasing application of fermented foods is further promoted by recent evidence on their health benefits, beyond the traditionally recognized effects on the digestive system. With recent advances in the understanding of gut-brain interactions, there have also been reports suggesting the fermented food's efficacy, particularly for cognitive function improvements. These results are strengthened by the proposed biological effects of fermented foods, including neuroprotection against neurotoxicity and reactive oxygen species. This paper reviews the beneficial health effects of fermented foods with particular emphasis on cognitive enhancement and neuroprotective effects. With an extensive review of fermented foods and their potential cognitive benefits, this paper may promote commercially feasible applications of fermented foods as natural remedies to cognitive problems.
To develop a cognitive system with the flexibility and breadth of human reasoning, it's very important to construct a large scale knowledge base which includes commonsense knowledge as well as expert knowledge. This paper introduces a cognitive system which provides a commonsense reasoning for everyday physical phenomena using qualitative reasoning. It is difficult to apply previous qualitative reasoning to commonsense reasoning since it provides reasoning based on abstract concepts which are apart from everyday real world concepts. Our research provides commonsense reasoning based on sketches and real world concepts by integrating qualitative reasoning and general large scale Cyc knowledge base. Our system has been implemented and tested on various examples.
Purpose: Despite poor cognitive function in heart failure (HF), few studies have examined cognition and its probable implication in self-care among Korean HF patients. The purposes of this study were (1) to describe cognition in the domains of global, memory, and executive functions, (2) to explore the relationship between cognition and self-care, and (3) to determine the amount of dietary sodium intake among Korean HF patients. Methods: A pilot study was conducted: 7 HF patients (3 men, mean age 68 years) completed face-to-face interviews for neuropsychological tests of cognition and self-care including dietary sodium intake. Results: More than half of the patients had impaired global cognition, memory, or executive function; patients with more severe HF were at higher risk of poor cognitive function. Korean HF patients exhibited poor self-care, with a high dietary sodium intake (5.6 g/day), approximately twice more than the suggested guideline of 2~3 g/day for patients with stable HF. Conclusion: Cognitive dysfunction and inadequate self-care with noncompliance with dietary sodium restriction were evident in Korean HF patients. More studies are warranted that examine the prevalence of cognitive impairment and areas of deficit using neuropsychological tests in a larger sample and that examine how cognition affects self-care and compliance in salt-intake.

Cerebral autosomal-dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) is inherited microangiopathy caused by mutations in the Notch3 gene. Typical findings from brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) include subcortical lacunes, extensive white matter change and cerebral microbleeds(CMBs). CMBs are indicative of bleeding-prone microangiopathy. Despite some studies investigating the association between lacunes and cognitive dysfunction in CADASIL, few studies have examined the relationship between cognitive dysfunction and CMBs. We sought to assess whether CMBs are associated with cognitive dysfunction in CADASIL. This study enrolled 83 consecutive patients with CADASIL between April 2012 and January 2014. Their degree of cognitive dysfunction was assessed by the Korean version of the CERAD neuropsychological assessment battery, digit span test, and the Stroop test. A 3.0-T MRI was used to obtain T1-weighted, fluid-attenuated inversion recovery, and susceptibility weighted images. In multiple logistic regression analysis, the grade of CMBs influenced tests of memory dysfunction (p=0.003). Three or more lacunes correlated with dysfunction in the executive domain (p=0.013) and attention domain (p=0.005). White matter hyperintensity (WMH) was an independent predictor of executive dysfunction (p=0.001). These findings suggest that in addition to lacunes, CMBs and WMHs may be useful imaging markers to associated with cognitive dysfunction in CADASIL.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a mobile application on quality of life, wellness, and preventive behaviors against dementia among older adults who use senior citizen centers. Methods: Seventy-two older adults who used senior citizen centers were allocated to an intervention group (n = 36) and a control group (n = 36). The experimental treatment involved a cognitive enhancement program for preventing dementia using a mobile application for 12 sessions over 6 weeks. Data were analyzed using the t-test, chi-square test, Fisher's exact test, paired t-test, and independent t-test. Results: The cognitive enhancement program based on a mobile application was effective for wellness (t = -3.87, p < .001) and preventive behaviors against dementia (t = -3.98, p < .001) for older adults who used a senior center. Conclusion: The mobile application-based cognitive enhancement program developed in this study is recommended as an effective intervention for dementia prevention in older adults.
