  • In this paper, we present an implementation of Long Term Evolution (LTE) Uplink (UL) system on a Software Defined Radio (SDR) platform using a conventional Personal Computer (PC), which adopts Graphic Processing Units (GPU) and Universal Software Radio Peripheral2 (USRP2) with URSP Hardware Driver (UHD) for SDR software modem and Radio Frequency (RF) transceiver, respectively. We have adopted UHD because UHD provides flexibility in the design of transceiver chain. Also, Cognitive Radio (CR) engine have been implemented by using libraries from UHD. Meanwhile, we have implemented the software modem in our system on GPU which is suitable for parallel computing due to its powerful Arithmetic and Logic Units (ALUs). From our experiment tests, we have measured the total processing time for a single frame of both transmit and receive LTE UL data to find that it takes about 5.00ms and 6.78ms for transmit and receive, respectively. It particularly means that the implemented system is capable of real-time processing of all the baseband signal processing algorithms required for LTE UL system.

  • Cognitive radio networks (CRNs) offer the promise of intelligent radios that can learn from and adapt to their environment. CRN permits unlicensed users to utilize the idle spectrum as long as it does not introduce interference to the primary users due to the Federal Communications Commission's recent regulatory policies. Thereby, the security aspects in CRNs should be different with the other networks. The purpose of this paper is to devise a new delegation-based authentication protocol (NDAP) by extracting out the security aspects for unlicensed user authentication over CRNs from Tsai et al's delegation-based authentication protocol (TDAP). First of all, we will provide security analyses on the TDAP and set design goal for unlicensed user authentication. Then, we will propose a NDAP as a remedy mechanism for the TDAP and a new protocol for CRNs. The NDAP could be used as a security building block for the CRNs and various convergence applications.

  • Cognitive radio, a new paradigm for wireless communication, is being recently expected to support various types of multimedia traffics. To guarantee Quality of Service (QoS) from SUs, a static packet priority policy can be considered. However, this approach can easily satisfy Quality of Service of high priority application while that of lower priority applications is being degraded. In the paper, we propose a fuzzy-based dynamic packet scheduling algorithm to support multimedia traffics in which the dynamic packet scheduler modifies priorities of packets according to Fuzzy-rules with the information of priority and delay deadline of each packet, and determines which packet would be transmitted through the channel of the primary user in the next time slot in order to reduce packet loss rate. Our simulation result shows that packet loss rate can be improved through the proposed scheme when overall traffic load is not heavy.

  • In cognitive radio networks, acquirement of position information of primary user is very important to secondary network since localization information of primary users can be utilized for improving the spectrum efficiency of secondary network and for avoiding harmful interference to primary users by using proper power control. Among various location methods, Received Signal Strength (RSS)-based localization has been widely used for distance measurements in the location detection process despite its inherent inaccuracy because it can be easily implemented without any additional hardware cost. In the RSS-based localization, the distance is measured by the received signal strength, and distance error can be caused by many factors such as fading, shadowing and obstacle between two nodes. In the paper, therefore we propose a localization scheme based on estimation of path-loss exponent to localize the location of primary users more accurately. Through simulations, it is shown that the proposed scheme can provide less localization error and interference rate to primary users than other schemes.

  • In this paper, we propose a cooperative multi-relay scheme for a secondary system to achieve spectrum access along with a primary system. In the primary network, a primary transmitter (PT) transmits the primary signal to a primary receiver (PR). In the secondary network, N secondary transmitter-receiver pairs (ST-SR) selected by a centralized control unit (CCU) are ready to assist the primary network. In particular, in the first time slot, PT broadcasts the primary signal to PR, which is also received by STs and SRs. At STs, the primary signal is regenerated and linearly combined with the secondary signal by assigning fractions of the available power to the primary and secondary signals respectively. The combined signal is then broadcasted by STs in a predetermined order. In order to achieve diversity gain, STs, SRs and PT will combine received replicas of the primary signal, using selection combining technique (SC). We derive the exact outage probability for the primary network as well as the secondary network. The simulation results are presented to verify the theoretical analyses.
