Cognitive Overload Reduced Online Meeting and Education Platform

  • Recently, with the rapid advancement of high-speed internet and interactive streaming technology, numerous video conferencing platforms such as Zoom, ZED, and Google Meet have been developed.. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic, in particular, served as a catalyst for the global spread of online meetings and online education. This led to a significant reduction in people's resistance to online education and meetings. Nowadays, it has become common for people to use video conferencing platforms like Zoom not only for meetings but also for online education, seminars, and classes. Along with this trend, more specialized online platforms have been released, and research has been conducted on platforms that people can use more comfortably and for longer periods. This study specifically analyzes the current online video conferencing platforms from the perspective of Cognitive Overload and proposes a method to reduce Cognitive Overload. Additionally, a system was developed to address this issue. In other words, this research aims to analyze the limitations of previous online video conferencing and education platforms regarding Cognitive Overload and identity recognition, and to propose an online video conferencing and education platform that can overcome these challenges.

  • In the present competitive organizational environment more organizations are implementing knowledge management initiatives to gain strategic advantage. One such initiative is that of implementing electronic knowledge repositories (EKR) which often leads to a rapid increase in the quantity of information employees have to process daily; raising concerns of employees being overloaded. This is especially true for current EKRs using distributive technology, enabling customizable individual workspaces which can result in loose knowledge structures. This paper identifies a new type of information overload (IO), extending the concept as occurring in both knowledge seekers and contributors and uses cognitive dissonance theory to provide evidence that IO can change employees' perception of EKR usage. This research paper provides the first empirical evidence that overload has no sufficient affect on EKR continuance intention directly, but has significant negative affect on the two main success measures; perceived usefulness and satisfaction of the system.

An interaction between cognitive ability and personality on the performance of computer-based group idea generation

  • Purpose Among various psychosocial factors, negative social comparison, attention blocking to stimuli, and cognitive interference via information overload are considered most critical in hindering the effective performance improvement of computer-based idea generation. Given that the effect of negative social comparison along with a plausible solution based on the notion of performance feedback and goal setting has been successfully addressed, this study focused on the remaining issues of "attention blocking to stimuli and cognitive interference via information overload" and attempted to find a way to alleviate the effect of such process losses on performance. Design/methodology/approach A 2 × 4 between-subjects design was used, crossing cognitive ability (high and low) and personality (extroversion and introversion). Five subjects per each treatment were randomly selected to make the sample size equal. The group simulator was used to measure individual-level performance. The dependent variables were the quantity of and quality score of ideas. The manner by which these performance measures were operationalized was consistent with prior studies. An additional analysis using the number of diverse ideas was also conducted. Findings Three arguments were made in this study: (1) high cognitive individuals would perform better than low cognitive individuals, (2) extraverted individuals would perform better than introverted individuals, and (3) cognitive ability and personality would interact such that individuals in Q1 would have the highest performance. Cognitive ability had an effect on quality not quantity. Personality had an effect on both quantity and quality. An interaction between cognitive ability and personality was not found due to small sample size despite the use of the group simulator.

이러닝 적용을 위한 뇌파기반 인지부하 측정 (EEG based Cognitive Load Measurement for e-learning Application)

  • 본 연구는 이러닝 체제에서 상호작용을 개선할 수 있도록 하기 위하여 사용자의 생리적 데이터 가운데서 뇌파를 통하여 학습자의 인지부하 발생을 파악할 수 있는 지를 연구하고자 하였다. 뇌파를 통하여 인지부하 발생을 알 수 있게 된다면 실시간 이러닝 체제에서 적절한 피드백 제공에 활용될 수 있기 때문이다. 이를 위하여 EEG를 이용하여 학습자의 뇌파를 측정하면서 인지활동을 수행하는 동안 발생되는 인지부하도를 측정하였고 인지과부하를 판별할 수 있는지를 알아보았다. 뇌파 측정을 위하여 언어 관련 작업기억 능력을 측정할 수 있는 듣기회상과제를 제시하였으며, 실험을 통한 과제 정답률 및 뇌파 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 듣기회상과제의 정답률은 회상반응과제에서 1단계는 84.4%, 2단계는 90.6%, 3단계는 62.5%, 4단계는 56.3%를 보였으며, 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 있음을 확인하였다. 즉, 3, 4단계의 경우는 피험자들이 매우 어려움을 겪었던 단계로 인지과부하가 발생했을 것으로 보인다. 둘째, SEF-95% 지표는 1, 2단계에 비해 3, 4단계에서 더욱 높은 값을 보였으며, 이는 피험자들의 인지부하가 3, 4단계에서 높았음을 객관적으로 보여주는 근거이다. 셋째, 감마파의 상대파워는 3, 4단계에서 파워값이 급격히 올라가는 패턴을 보였으며, 통계적으로 유의한 5개의 채널(F3, F4, C4, F7, F8)을 확인하였다. 5개의 채널은 뇌의 브로카 영역(F7, F8) 주위에 위치하고 있으며, 특히 뇌맵핑 분석을 통해 확인한 결과, F8(우반구의 브로카 영역에 해당하는 위치)에서 단계별 난이도가 올라갈수록 활성화의 차이가 크게 나타났다. 넷째, 19채널에 대한 상호 상관 분석을 통해 1, 2단계에 비해 3, 4단계에서 비동기화가 증가하였다. 위의 결과를 통한 본 연구의 결론은 뇌파를 이용하여 인간이 인지활동을 수행하는 동안 인지부하도를 측정할 수 있으며, 인지과부하를 판별해 낼 수 있음을 확인하였다.

Social Media Performance: From the Perspective of Social Media Apathetic Behavior

  • Purpose - Social media platforms have presented individuals with an opportunity to create and maintain their social relationship through the use of social media services. However, such social relationship has a negative influence on users' interest in social media. Design/methodology - Using structural equation modeling, this study seeks to examines the effects of different social media conflicts (individual and social conflicts) on users' psychological internal state, especially user apathetic behavior Findings - The findings confirm that, among social media conflicts, social-related conflict, especially social interaction overload has a negative effect on cognitive resonance, while individual conflict has the highest effect on cognitive dissonance. Also, cognitive dissonance has a much greater effect than cognitive resonance on user resistance, this means that users' negative perception of social media has a greater influence on their resistance. Lastly, user's resistance was found to have a positive influence on user's apathetic behavior. Originality/value - In other to capture social media Apathetic behavior, this study focus on social media conflict perspective, which includes social-related conflict and individual conflict, which are found to influence users' internal states towards social media and further induce social media behavior. This study is unique because it is among the first to explore social media apathetic behavior by focusing on the influence of both external social media conflict and internal state. Also, this study proposed that social related conflict has a higher negative influence on WeChat user than individual related conflict.

짧은 동영상 광고 스토리텔링 유형과 메시지자극가(MSV)가 스토리몰입에 미치는 영향연구 - 틱톡(TikTok) 중국소비자를 대상으로 (Moderating Effect on Transportation Between Short Storytelling ad types and Message Sensation Value: Focusing on TikTok & Chinese consumers)

  • 최근 폭발적인 인기를 끌고있는 짧은 동영상 애플리케이션(e.g., TikTok, YouTube Shorts)은 광고집행을 위한 새로운 SNS 플랫폼으로 관심을 받고 있다. 이러한 배경에서 본 연구는 짧은 동영상 애플리케이션에서 집행되고 있는 스토리텔링 광고를 분류하고 그 효과를 측정하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 상술 하면, 전통적 광고 분류기준인 허구성을 기준으로 스토리텔링 광고를 리얼리티, 패러디, 창의형식으로 구분하였다. 또한 인지심리학 정보처리 맥락에서 높은 수준과 낮은 수준의 메시지가치가(MSV)로 광고들을 분류하였다. 전 세계적으로 가장 많은 이용자를 보유한 틱톡을 대상으로 총 784명 중국인 이용자의 응답을 수집하였다. 연구결과 두 개의 주요 변인(허구성과 MSV) 간에 유의미한 조절효과가 발생하였다. 가장 주목할 만한 결과는 정보처리 리소스의 사용을 높게 요구하는 높은 허구성의 창의적 기법이 높은 메시지자극가를 사용하게 되면 인지과부하(cognitive overload)를 야기하여 광고효과가 낮아지는 것으로 나타났다. 보다 자세한 이론적 논의와 효과적인 짧은 동영상 스토리텔링 광고제작을 위한 제언들을 본문에서 상세히 소개하였다.

수도권 도로 교통 표지판의 인지 공학적 평가 분석 (Ergonomic(Cognitive) Evaluation of the Traffic Sign System around Seoul Metropolitan Area)

  • Traffic signs without a cognitive consideration in their design may cause information-processing problem that could result in a mental confusion among drivers often lead to a serious traffic accident. Therefore, in this study, several traffic signs currently used in Seoul Metropolitan area have been sampled and analyzed to identify design problems that usually caused by neglecting drivers cognitive ability. To classify the practical design problems, five major information-processing problems have been suggested: indistinguishable information, information conflict, missing information, sign-load mismatch, and information overload. In order to solve these cognitive problems, new traffic signs have been suggested in this study. An experiment was also performed to validate the new traffic sign. Twenty-four healthy subjects participated in the experiment. They were asked to answer the Question after observing the traffic signs continuously displayed on computer screen. The result indicated that subjects improved the accuracy in understanding the signs by 1.4 times when they used the suggested traffic sign compared to the old one. Based upon the results, a cognitive guideline was suggested for correct and speedy reading of traffic signs by improving information processing and reducing of human error. In conclusion, the traffic sign may well be applied to design an intelligent traffic sign system to increase the safety and comfort of drivers, especially in complex load condition.

초보자들의 프로그래밍 학습을 위한 웹 기반 적응형 하이퍼미디어 시스템 (A Web-based adaptive hypermedia system for novices to learn programming)

  • 웹 기술의 빠른 성장과 더불어, 웹은 다양한 측면에서 우리의 삶뿐만 아니라 교육과 학습을 변화시켰다. 웹 기반 학습은 자기 주도적 학습과 창의적 학습을 언제 어디서나 지원해 줄 수 있게 되었지만 학습 내용들로 구성되는 하이퍼 공간의 구조가 복잡할 경우 학습자들은 방향 감각 상실이나 인지 과부하를 경험할 수도 있다. 본 논문에서는 인지적 부하 이론을 근거로 초보자들이 프로그래밍 학습을 한 때 경험할 수 있는 인지 부하를 줄일 수 있는 웹 기반 적응형 하이퍼미디어 시스템을 설계하고 구현하였다.

정보과잉 요인과 뉴스 소비 패턴의 관계: 티핑 포인트의 역할을 중심으로 (Factors of Information Overload and Their Associations with News Consumption Patterns: The Roles of Tipping Point)

  • 본 연구는 Jackson and Farzaneh(2012)이 제시한 정보과잉의 세 가지 요소, 즉 시간, 기술, 사회적 네트워크로 구성된 이론적 모델을 뉴스 소비 행위 맥락에서 경험적으로 검증했다. 1,166명의 전국 샘플을 토대로 분석한 결과, 정보과잉 지각과 사회적 네트워크 크기와 다양성은 적극적이고 소극적인 뉴스 소비와 모두 정적인 관련이 있었다. 또한 개인적으로 다양한 수준의 인지적 한계점, 즉 티핑포인트의 존재를 암시하는 연구결과를 토대로, 정보과잉에도 불구하고 개인의 티핑포인트에 따라 정보처리가 중단되지 않고 정보이용을 지속할 수 있다는 점을 확인했다. 특히, 본 연구가 주목한 뉴스 소비자들의 경우 정보과잉 지각에도 불구하고 뉴스의 사실성을 판별하기 위해서 지속적으로 정보를 검색하고 받고자 하는 의도가 높기 때문에 개인의 티핑포인트에 따라 전략적인 뉴스 소비를 채택하는 것으로 보인다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 경영정보시스템과 저널리즘 차원에서 실무적 함의를 논의했다.

초등과학영재와 일반 아동의 분류 과정에서 나타나는 안구 운동 패턴의 차이 (Differences in Eye Movement Pattern during the Classification between the Gifted and General Students in Elementary Schools)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the differences in eye movement pattern shown in classification activities between the gifted and regular students in elementary schools. The subjects for the research consisted of five gifted students in the special education center for the gifted at Seoul National University of Education and five students at D regular elementary schools. SMI (Senso Motoric Instruments)' iView $X^{TM}$ RED 120 Hz was used in order to collect eye movement data. Results were as follows. There were difference patterns between the gifted and the regular student in question identification, attribute observation, and criteria generation process. Gifted students minimized unnecessary cognitive overload and took advantage of cognitive economic efficiency. Regular students have a lot of cognitive burden because they did not grasp the essential information.
