Effect of Anti-Aging Standard Forest Healing Program With Multiple Visits to a Forest Facility on Cognition in Older Age Patients

  • Background and purpose: The anti-aging standard forest healing program (ASFHP), which uses forest therapy, was reported to be effective in improving psychological, physical, and cognitive functions. However, there are several challenges to directly visiting the forest. This study aimed to investigate the impact of multi-session ASFHP with forest visit on the mental and physical health of the older people with visits to forest facilities and compared them with those of the same program conducted indoors. Methods: Individuals aged over 70 years with concerns about cognitive decline were recruited at dementia relief centers and divided into control and experimental groups. A total of 33 people were administered ASFHP under the supervision of a forest therapy instructor. The control group stayed indoors, while the experimental group visited a forest healing center and repeated the program 20 weeks. Results: The multiple-session ASFHP positively affected cognitive impairment screening test (CIST) total scores (p=0.002), memory (p=0.014), Korean version of the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status total scores (p<0.001), immediate recall (p=0.001), visuospatial/construction (p<0.001), language (p<0.001), forest healing standard questionnaire total scores (p=0.002), and cognitive function (p=0.019), regardless of location. The forest visits during the ASFHP showed positive effects on orientation (p=0.035), delayed recall (p=0.042), emotional stability (p=0.032), physical activity (p=0.005), and health (p=0.022). The CIST scores of the memory domain were the strongest indicator of the multiple-session ASFHP effects. Conclusions: The 20-week multi-session ASFHP with forest visit showed effects on cognitive improvement and physical and emotional stability compared to indoor education.

노인요양시설 노인의 건강상태, 신체적, 정신적 기능, 사회적 지지에 따른 삶의 질 예측요인-D 광역시를 중심으로- (Prediction of Quality of Life among the Elderly at Care Facilities for the Elderly according to Health States, Physical and Cognitive Functions, and Social Supports-Focused on D Metropolitan City)

  • 본 연구는 요양시설 노인들의 삶의 질과 건강상태, 신체적 기능, 정신적 기능, 사회적 지지의 관련성을 파악하고자 실시하였다. 연구대상자는 일부 도시 지역에서 요양시설에 거주하는 만 65세 이상의 노인을 대상으로 하였다. 분석대상은 260명 이었고, 자료는 기술적 통계, t-tset, ANOVA, pearson correlation과 stepwise multiple regression으로 분석 하였다. 그 결과 매우 취약한 대상군인 요양시설 노인들의 삶의 질은 입주기간과 수면상태가 만족스러운 경우, 주관적 건강상태가 높은 경우, 치아 부자유함이 없는 경우, 건망증이 없는 경우, 우울이 낮을수록, 인지기능이 좋을수록, 사회적 지지가 높을수록 삶의 질 평균이 높게 나타났다. 삶의 질과의 상관관계에서는 수면상태(r=-.20, p<.001)와 주관적 건강상태(r=-.24, p<.001), 우울(r=-.30, p<.001), 사회적 지지(r=.30, p<.001)와 상관관계가 있었다. 요양시설 노인들의 삶의 질 예측 요인으로는 사회적지지(${\beta}=.30$, p<.001), 우울(${\beta}=-.25$, p<.001), 주관적 건강상태(${\beta}=-.22$, p<.001), 입소기간(${\beta}=-.22$, p<.001), 수면상태(${\beta}=-.12$, p=.025)가 삶의 질과 밀접하게 관련되고 예측요인임을 알 수 있었다. 결론적으로, 요양시설 노인들의 삶의 질은 여러 요인이 관련되어 있으며, 삶의 질에 대한 간호중재 및 관리는 신체적 활동이나 질병관리와 함께 정신적, 사회적 접근이 필요하며 노인의 개별적 이해를 중점으로 전인적 접근이 중요하다고 하겠다.

실용성 목표 관점에서의 중학교 함수 단원 분석과 그에 따른 개선 방안 (An Analysis on Function Chapters in the Middle School for an Alternative Description in view of Practical Objectives)

  • This paper is to find and to suggest alternative ways of description on function chapters in the middle school mathematics so that the descriptions be more closely related to daily life. The research has two phases: one for belief on the usefulness, the other for cognitive ability to solve the practical problems. Results are as following. 1. Most descriptions of corresponding chapters have emphases on the usefulness of functions so as to enhance beliefs on the use of functions. 2. Most practical functions contain expressions of large constant term and large coefficients in magnitude while those are not in the descriptions of tektbooks, especially in case of using ruled papers. 3. For quadratic functions, most students do not detect the degree of the function from the data presented by pairs of values of x and y. And those are not dealt with in most of textbooks, which are given in the MIC textbook.

Effects of Environmental Reinforcement Through Motivation on Motor and Cognitive Function in Rats With Focal Ischemic Brain Injury

  • It is known that individual factors as cognitive, perception, emotion, and motivation may greatly influence on recovery from neurologic region. This study was to investigate the effects of environmental reinforcement through motivation to perform the tasks voluntarily on motor and cognition function in rats with focal ischemic brain injury. Focal ischemic brain injury was induced in Sprague-Dawley rats (15 rats, $250{\pm}50$ g) through middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo). And then, experiment groups were randomly divided into three groups; The control group: MCAo induction ($n_1$=5), the environmental reinforcement (ER) group: the application for ER after MCAo induction ($n_2$=5), the environmental reinforcement through motivation (ERM) group: the application for ERM after MCAo induction ($n_3$=5). The climbing test (CT) and the modified limb placing tests (MLPTs) to measure the motor function and the Morris water maze acquisition test (MWMAT) and the Morris water maze retention test (MWMRT) to measure the cognitive function were performed. For the CT, the ERM group was significantly larger than the ER group. For the MLPTs, the ERM group was significantly decreased compared to other groups. For the MWMAT, the time to find the circular platform in the ERM group significantly decreased compared to other groups. For the MWMRT, the time to dwell on the quadrant circular platform in the ERM group was significantly increased compared to other groups. These results suggested that the ERM could improve the motor and cognitive functions in the rats with focal ischemic brain injury.

레크리에이션 치료 프로그램이 치매 노인들의 인지기능과 균형감각에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Therapeutic Recreation Program on Cognitive Functions and Balance in Elderly People with Alzheimer's Dementia)

  • 본 연구는 레크리에이션 치료 프로그램이 치매 노인들의 인지기능과 균형감각에 미치는 영향을 조사 분석하고자 실시되었다. 연구대상은 알츠하이머형 치매를 진단받은 노인 16명을 대상으로 6 개월 동안 레크리에이션 치료 프로그램을 제공하였으며, 실험군과 대조군 두 그룹의 프로그램 제공전과 후의 인지기능과 균형감각의 변화를 분석하였다. 연구결과 레크리에이션 치료 프로그램은 알츠하이머형 치매 노인의 인지기능과 균형감각을 유지시키거나 증진시키는 것으로 보고되었다. 연구 대상자 모집과 손실 및 레크리에이션 치료 프로그램 기간과 같은 변수 통제의 어려움을 제한점으로 볼 수 있으나 레크리에이션 치료와 같은 비약리적 방법의 개발과 효과성 검증의 측면에서 치매 노인의 재활치료 연구에 기여하였다고 판단된다.

노인의 일상생활 수행능력, 자기 효능감, 신체활동 및 인지기능의 관계 (The Relations among ADL, Self-efficacy, Physical Activity and Cognitive Function in Korean Elders)

  • Purpose: This study was to identify the relations among ADL, self-efficacy, physical activity and cognitive function in elders. Methods: A total of 257 subjects aged between 60 and 92 were selected through convenient sampling. Data were collected with a self-reported questionnaire from November 1 to November 30, 2008. Collected data were analyzed with SPSS/WIN 15.0. Results: Differences in ADL, self-efficacy, physical activity, and cognitive functions according to general characteristics were as follows. ADL was significantly different according to age, cohabitation, recognition on health, and successful aging. Self-efficacy was significantly different according to cohabitation, recognition on health, and successful aging. Physical activity was significantly different according to age, educational level, cohabitation, and cognition on health. Cognitive function was significantly different according to age, educational level, job, and recognition on health. The correlation coefficient (r) of the ADL variables was .565 for self-efficacy, .633 for physical activity and .460 for cognitive function. Conclusion: Findings of this study may be useful in understanding the health status of community-dwelling elders and developing more specific health promotion programs.

노인의 인지기능과 우울의 영향요인 (Influencing Factors of Cognitive Function and Depression in Elderly)

  • Purpose: This study was performed to investigate the influencing factors of cognitive function and depression in elderly. Method: From 3 provinces, 282 elders who resided in community and facilities completed structured questionnaires, including cognitive functions, depression, self-esteem, ADL, and IADL. Data were analyzed by applying ${\chi}^2$-test, ANOVA, partial correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression analysis with SAS 8.12. Results: Community dwelling aged people showed higher scores in MMSE-K, self-esteem, ADL and IADL, and showed lower scores in depression than facility elders. MMSE-K was positively correlated in self-esteem, ADL, and personal cognition of health, except depression. Major factors that affect cognitive function of elderly were residual type, age, and IADL. In addition, major factors that affect depression of elderly were self-esteem, personal cognition of health, and marital status. Conclusions: Based on the results above, it is necessary to identify the status of cognition and depression in the elderly, and to develop nursing intervention programs, which improve cognitive function and reduce depression for aged, especially for the facility admitted aged.

Hippocampus Segmentation and Classification in Alzheimer's Disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment Applied on MR Images

  • The brain magnetic resonance images (MRI) is an important imaging biomarker in Alzheimer's disease (AD) as the cerebral atrophy has been shown to strongly associate with cognitive symptoms. The decrease of volume estimates in different structures of the medial temporal lobe related to memory correlates with the decline of cognitive functions in neurodegenerative diseases. During the past decades several methods have been developed for quantifying the disease related atrophy of hippocampus from MRI. Special effort has been dedicated to separate AD and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) related modifications from normal aging for the purpose of early detection and prediction. We trained a multi-class support vector machine (SVM) with probabilistic outputs on a sample (n = 58) of 20 normal controls (NC), 19 individuals with MCI, and 19 individuals with AD. The model was then applied to the cross-validation of same data set which no labels were known and the predictions. This study presents data on the association between MRI quantitative parameters of hippocampus and its quantitative structural changes examination use on the classification of the diseases.

  • This paper proposes a novel of a personalized Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) system based on learner's cognitive abilities related to foreign language proficiency. In this CALL system, a strategy of retrieval learning, a method of learning memory cycle, and a method of repeated learning are applied for effective vocabulary memorization. The system is designed to offer personalized learning based on cognitive abilities related to the human language process. For this, the proposed CALL system has a cognitive diagnosis module which can measure five types of cognitive abilities. The results of this diagnosis are used to create dynamic learning scenarios for personalized learning and to evaluate user performance in the learning. This system is also designed in order to have users be able to create learning word lists and to share them simply with various functions based on open APIs. Additionally, through experiments, it has shown that this system helps students to learn English vocabulary effectively and enhances their foreign language skills.

Translocator protein (TSPO): the new story of the old protein in neuroinflammation

  • Translocator protein (TSPO), also known as peripheral benzodiazepine receptor, is a transmembrane protein located on the outer mitochondria membrane (OMM) and mainly expressed in glial cells in the brain. Because of the close correlation of its expression level with neuropathology and therapeutic efficacies of several TSPO binding ligands under many neurological conditions, TSPO has been regarded as both biomarker and therapeutic target, and the biological functions of TSPO have been a major research focus. However, recent genetic studies with animal and cellular models revealed unexpected results contrary to the anticipated biological importance of TSPO and cast doubt on the action modes of the TSPO-binding drugs. In this review, we summarize recent controversial findings on the discrepancy between pharmacological and genetic studies of TSPO and suggest some future direction to understand this old and mysterious protein.
