  • There are cofferdam and watertight wall to prevent of circulation or pollution during building of ocean structures like a dam and bridge in the harbors area and the sea. Inflow fluid and base of structure is important thing as one of the structural design factors for this interception wall like a cofferdam and watertight wall. In this study, it is revealed that at least 500 instantaneous velocity field data are required for ensemble average to get reliable turbulence statistics. The turbulent shear flow around a surface-mounted vertical wall was investigated by using the two-frame PIV(CACTUS 3.1) system and Mean velocity distributions have also been measured in the whole flow field.

  • In this study, the behaviors of a suction cap shaped as an arch were analyzed using finite element models. The fundamental structural behaviors of both flat- and arch-type caps were compared, and the advantages of the arch-shaped cap were explained. Moreover, the effects of geometric parameters and stiffener arrangements on the stress and deformation of the arch-shaped caps were investigated by comparisons of the changes in the behaviors of the caps. Additionally, the effects of boundary condition at the edge of the cap were analyzed to study the interactions between the cap and cofferdam walls; these results were used to derive the fundamental structural design of stiffened arch caps. Unlike flat caps, the results showed that ring stiffeners could improve the structural behaviors of arch caps remarkably, while the contributions of the radial stiffeners to the structural behaviors of the caps are dependent on constraints at the edges of the caps.

  • This study presents dynamic responses of circular pipe models as a part of fundamental studies on dynamic stability monitoring of the large circular steel pipe cofferdam with the ship collision. Small-scaled laboratory experiments are performed with a single and bolted circular steel pipes with a diameter, thickness, and height of 30, 0.4, 90 cm, respectively. The bolted circular steel pipe is configured with three segments of 30 cm in height. Circular steel pipe models are embedded in a soil tank, all 1 m in length, width, and height. The thickness of soil in the soil tank is set at 23 cm. The ship collision is simulated with a hammer impacting. The dynamic responses are investigated with different water levels of 25, 40, 55, and 70 cm. Experimental results show that a signal energy decreases with increasing water level. More sensitive reduction in the energy appears for the bolted circular steel pipe. A predominant frequency decreases with increasing water level for both single and bolted steel pipes. The minor reduction in the frequency appears for the bolted circular steel pipe under the water level of 70 cm. This study suggests that the signal energy and frequency response is useful for the dynamic stability monitoring of the large circular steel pipe cofferdam.

  • This study is to quantitatively evaluate the impact on surrounding groundwater of waterway tunnel excavation and cofferdam construction in which A-dam and B-dam, so prediction of groundwater fluctuation and tunnel lining installation was studied. As a result, drawdown of groundwater level during tunnel excavation and cofferdam construction occurred about 3.58 m in the tunnel shaft. The initial condition of groundwater level recovered by up to 90 % was simulated after the completed the construction of the tunnel and lining installation. Groundwater inflow in the tunnel evaluated was analyzed to have exceeding water design criteria of the tunnel. The groundwater inflow is reduced to maximum $0.006m^3/min/km$ after lining installation done in the tunnel, so effect of lining installation was evaluated as 93 % or more. Drawdown of about 0.04~0.31 m occurs in the houses and temples analysis of groundwater system of the surrounding area from construction. Drawdown has occurred nearly by considering annual groundwater level fluctuation of National Groundwater Observation Network.

  • A drillship is a representative floating offshore installation. The boom in oil and gas field development has dramatically increased the demands for drillships. Drillships have a moonpool in the center area of the ship for the purpose of drilling. This moonpool has an effect on the seakeeping performance of a drillship in the vicinity of the resonance frequency. Because of the moonpool, drillships act in different resonance modes, called the sloshing mode and piston mode. The objective of this study was to find the moonpool effect on the motion of a drillship through the motion analysis of a currently operating modern compact drillship. The predicted resonance frequencies based on Molin's theoretical formula, Fukuda's empirical formula, and BEM-based numerical analysis are compared. The accuracy of the predictions using the theoretical and empirical formulas is compared with the numerical analysis and evaluated. In the case of the piston mode, the difference between the resonance frequency from theoretical formula and the resonance frequency from the numerical analysis is analyzed. The resonance frequency formula for more a complex moonpool geometry such as a moonpool with a cofferdam is necessarily emphasized.

  • The temperature crack of concrete structure is caused by the phenomenon which the concrete volume is restricted in the inside or outside part due th the temperature variations induced by the hydration heat of cement. And mass concrete structures are weak in temperature crack. Seongdeok multi-purpose dam is gravity dam which is being constructed in Cheongsong-gun, Gyeonsangbuk-do. Upstream cofferdam was constructed to examine the temperature crack due to hydration heat and to decide the height of placement. Therefore this study performed the hydration heat analysis of Seongdeok upstream coffer dam to analyze the hydration heat according to different height of placement and to compare with measured results.

  • Since 1993, Seohae grand bridge has been continued construction for 7 years and will be completed late this year. The bridge is a part of west sea castal highway and consists of 3 types of bridge including precast segmental method, free cantilever method and cable stayed bridge. A cable stayed bridge is the core of this bridge and it consists of 5 span, symetrical cable-stayed bridge with a total length of 990 m. The main span between two H-shaped pylons extending approximately 180 M above massive foundation of a cable stayed bridge is 470 m long and an approach span of that is 260 m long respectively. The circular cofferdam with 16 ea of 25 m diameter flat type sheet pile had been applied to construct foundation. The slipform method had been applied for forming of con'c of two H-shaped pylons with 3 cross beams respectively which is varied horizontally and vertically. The deck has been erected with balanced cantilever method using movable derrick crane. The stay cables is a bundle of parallel individually protected, 7 wire high tensile strands. The strands is hot deep galvanized and sheathed with a tight high density polyethylene coating. A petroleum wax fills all the inter-wire voids. The bundle of strands to prevent from deterioration due to the ambient problem covered with high density polyethylene pipe. The Isotension method has been applied for the stressing of cable strands to ensure uniformity of force in all the strands of a syay and such works has been performed on the stay specially provided in the pylon.

  • Gravity dam use self weight to stand external force like hydraulic pressure. In general, gravity dam concrete is divided into internal and external concrete. Seongdeok dam is gravity dam which is being constructed in Cheongsong-gun, Gyeonsangbuk-do. And upstream cofferdam was constructed to examine the temperature crack due to hydration heat and to decide the height of placement. In this study, we examined the mix design of internal/external concrete and physical properties(compressive strength, adiabatic temperature rise). And we also performed laboratory tests to verify exothermic properties. Lastly, we measured the hydration heat and thermal stress of upstream cofferdam.
