This study was focused on the measurement of thermal expansion coefficients for GRP pipe through strain gage circuits. First of all, thermal expansion coefficients of aluminum beam were measured to examine the validity of the suggested method by using various types of strain gage circuits. Thermal expansion coefficients of GRP pipes along axial and hoop directions were measured to investigate the effect of the location of strain gages, number of repeated measurements, and strain gage types with different thermal expansion coefficients on the thermal strains and the repeatability of measured results. According to the results, thermal expansion coefficients of GRP pipes along hoop direction were lower than those along axial direction due to the constraint effect of reinforced glass fibers on thermal strains along hoop direction. As measurements were repeated, thermal expansion coefficients of GRP pipes were slightly increased, but the degree of increase became smaller. Finally, the same thermal expansion coefficients were obtained irrespective of different types of strain gages with different thermal expansion coefficients if thermal strains of strain gages were compensated by using reference compensation specimen.

Aluminium titanate (Al₂TiO5) with an excellent thermal shock resistant and a low the expansion coefficient was obtained by solid solution with MgO, SiO₂, and ZrO₂ in the Al₂TiO5 lattice or in the grain boundary solution through electrofusion in an arc furnace. However, these materials have low mechanical strength due to the presence of microcracks developed by a large difference in thermal expansion coefficients along crystallographic axes. Pure Al₂TiO5 tends to decompose into α-Al₂O₃ and TiO₂-rutile in the temperature range of 750-1300℃ that rendered it apparently useless for industrial applications. Several thermal shock tests were performed: Long therm thermal annealing test at 1100℃ for 100h; and water quenching from 950 to room temperature (RT). Cyclic thermal expansion coefficients up to 1500℃ before and after decomposition tests was also measured using a dilatometer, changes in the microstructure, thermal expansion coefficients, Young's modulus and strengths were determined. The role of microcracks in relation to thermal shock resistance and thermal expansion coefficient is discussed.

In this paper, thermal expansion coefficients of fiber-reinforced composite materials are predicted by direct numerical simulation. From comparing the predicted results with experimental results, it is confirmed that direct numerical simulation gives similar results to the previously proposed methods while minimizing artificial assumptions. Additionally trend of variation in thermal expansion coefficients is investigated according to the fiber volume fraction.
The effects of solute carbon atoms on the thermal expansion coefficients of ferrite and austenite as well as austenitization behavior were investigated by comparing carbon-free ferrite and carbon-containing ferrite. The thermal expansion coefficients and austenitization start and finish temperatures were measured using a dilatometer. Solute carbon atoms at elevated temperatures above the cementite dissolution temperature (650 K) decreased the thermal expansion coefficients of both ferrite and austenite. In addition, minute amount of carbon atoms dissolved in ferrite stimulated austenite nucleation during continuous heating, resulting in the lower starting temperature of austenitization.
The physical properties of gold investment materials are depending on it's thermal expansion coefficients, compressive strength, and particles size distributions. Normally the gold investment materials are consisted of cristobalite, quartz and plaster. Since the thermal expansion coefficient of cristobalite and quartz are $2.6\times10^{-6}/^\circC$, $2.32\times10^{-6}/^\circC$, respectively, the composition ratio of each components influence the thermal and clinical properties of gold investment materials. Recently are imported from overseas and the commercial market is expected to expand. Thus it is necessary to develop the optimum strength and compressive strength of gold investment materials which the an homogeneous size distribution and thermal expansion coefficients. Therefore two different experiments has been done. Firstly the homogeneous cristobalite and quartz are made by pulverizing milling. Secondly the compressive strength and thermal expansion coefficients are analysed by the composition ratio of cristobalite and quartz. As a results of experiments, homogeneous distribution of cristobalite and quartz are observed by pulverizing and milling. The optimum compressive strength was obtained at the ratio of 45:25 cristobalite, quartz respectively.
Thermal expansions and thermal expansion coefficients of cordierite ceramics reinforced by SiC whiskers up to 40 vol. % were investigated. The composite specimens were hot pressed at 1523K for 30 min under 28.5 MPa pressing pressure in Ar atmosphere. Thermal expansions of the hot pressed composites were measured using a differential dilatometer up to 1262 K in air. Thermal expansions and thermal expansion coefficient of the composites increased with SiC whisker content. Thermal expansion behaviors of the composites were well explained by modelling parallel slabs randomly distributed on the whisker plane as the microstructural element of the composites.

The aim of this study is to improve properties both glass transition temperature($T_g$) and coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE) using epoxy/micro-nano alumina composites with adding glycerol diglycidyl ether (GDE:1,2,3,5g). This paper deals with the effects of GDE addition for epoxy/micro alumina contents (40, 50, 60wt%)+surface modified nano alumina(1_phr) composites. 20 kinds specimen were prepared with containing micro, nano alumina and GDE as a micro composites(10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70wt%) or a nano/micro alumina composites(1phr/40, 50, 60wt%). Average particle size of nano and micro alumina used were 30nm and $1{\sim}2{\mu}m$, respectively. The micro alumina used were alpha phase with Heterogeneous and nano alumina were gamma phase particles of spherical shape. The glass transition temperature and coefficients of thermal expansion was evaluated by DSC and TMA. The glass transition temperature decreased and coefficients of thermal expansion become smaller with filled contents of epoxy/micro alumina composites. On the other hand, $T_g$ and CTE as GDE addition variation(1,2,3,5g) of epoxy/micro-nano alumina composites decreased and increased respectively.

This paper proposes the solutions predicting the coefficient of the thermal expansion changes of composites which include the fiber-like shaped ($a_1$ > ($a_2$ = ($a_3$) and the disk-like shaped (al = a2> a3) inclusions like two dimensional geometries, which has one aspect ratios, ${\alpha}$ = ($a_1$ /($a_3$). The analysis follows the procedure developed for elastic moduli by using the generalized approach of Eshelby’s equivalent tensor. The influences of the aspect ratios, on the effective coefficient of thermal expansion of composites containing aligned isotropic inclusions are examined. This model should be limited to analyze the composites with unidirectionally aligned inclusions and with complete binding to each other of both matrix and inclusions having homogeneous properties. The coefficient of thermal expansion of composites (${\theta}_{11}$,${\theta}_{22}$and ${\theta}_{33}$) are investigated. From material data of the composites with glass fiber in epoxy resin, the thermal expansions along the aspect ratio were obtained and similar to the Chow model. The longitudinal coefficients of thermal expansion ${\theta}_{11}$decrease, as the aspect ratios increase. However, the transverse coefficients of thermal expansion ${\theta}_{22}$increase or decrease, as the aspect ratios increase. And both of them decrease, as the concentration increases.

The advent of highly integrated, high-power electronics requires low a coefficient of thermal expansion performance to prevent delamination between the heat dissipation material and substrate. This paper reports a preliminary study on the manufacturing technology of gas reaction control composite material, focusing on the prediction of the thermal expansion coefficients of Al-AlN composite materials. We obtained numerical equivalent property values by using finite element analysis and compared the values with theoretical formulas. Al-AlN should become the optimal composite material when the proportion of the reinforcing phase is approximately 0.45.

In this experimental study, the thermal stability values of micrometer-sized silica particle-reinforced epoxy composite specimens were evaluated by measuring their thermal expansion coefficients and Young's moduli. For all specimens used in this study (from the baseline specimen to that containing 70 wt% silica filler), the thermal expansion coefficients and Young's moduli were gradually reduced down to 25% and increased up to 51%, respectively. The results of the experiment were compared with those of certain empirical models. The experimental results of the measurement of thermal expansion coefficients corresponded well with those of Kerner's model, which considers the bulk and shear moduli of the matrix and silica filler. However, the results of the measurement of Young's moduli using the empirical Mori-Tanaka model were observed to match better with those of the experiment. The comparison of the results of the experiment with those of the empirical models demonstrated that a reliable model for measuring the thermal expansion coefficients and Young's moduli of composite specimens needs to consider certain property variations in the composites in addition to volume fraction changes in the filler and matrix.
