  • Recently, four speech coding techniques, namely, SBC-APCM(sub-band coding adaptive PCM), RPE-LPC(regualr pulse excitation linear predictive codec), MPE-LTP(multi-pulse excited long-term prediction) and CELP (code-excited linear prediction) are proposed for digital mobile radio applications. However, a performance comparison of these coders in the Rayleigh fading environment has not been made yet. In this paper, the performances of the four spech coders in the random bit error and burst error environment are investigated. For the channel coding of SBC-APCM, RPE-LPC and MPE-LTP, the sensitivity of output bit stream is measured and a bit selective forward error correction is provided acording to the measured bit sensitivity. And for an attempt to improve the performance of CELP, an optimum quantizer is applied for transmitting scalar quantities in CELP. However, an improvement over the conventional approach is found to be negligible. For the channel coding of CELP, Reed-Solomon code, Golay code, convolutional code of rate 1/2 shows the best performance. Finally, from the simulation results, it is concluded that CELP is the best candidate for digital mobile radio and is followed by MPE-LTP, SBC-APCM and RPE-LPC.

  • The conventional CELP(code excited linear prediction) type vocoder has no V/UV(voiced/unvoiced) classifier. So, the unvoiced speech is processed like the voiced speech. In this paper, to reduce the bit rate, we propose a new V/UV decision algorithm minimized error rate and preprocessing computation. This V/UV classifier use the LSP(line spectrum pair) parameter which is acquired spectrum analysis process in CELP vocoders. Applying this method to the 5.3kbps ACELP(algebraic code excited linear prediction) in the G.723.1, we can get the transmission bits rate reduction of 6% approximately without degradation of speech quality.

  • In this paper, we present code-excited linear prediction coding using trellis coded vector excitation, termed trellis code-excited linear prediction coding (TCELP), for an efficient 8 kbps digital cellular vocoder. A training sequence-based algorithm is developed for designing an optimized codebook subject to the TCELP structure. Also, we discuss the encoding complexity of the TCELP system and trellis symbol release rules that avoid excessive encoding delay. finally, simulation results results for the TCELP coder are given at the bit rate of 8 kbps.

  • In this paper, we propose a new excitation enhancement technique to improve the speech quality of low bit-rate code-excited linear prediction (CELP) coders. The proposed technique is based on a harmonic model and it is employed only in the decoding process of speech coders without any additional bits. We develop the procedure of harmonic model parameter estimation and harmonic generation, and apply this technique to a current state-of-the-art low bit rate speech coder, ITU-T G.729 Annex D. Also, its performance is measured by using the ITU-T P.862 PESQ score and compared to those of the phase dispersion filter and the long-term postfilter applied to the decoded excitation. It is shown that the proposed excitation enhancement technique can improve the quality of decoded speech and provide better quality for male speech than other techniques.

  • Code excited linear prediction speech coders exhibit good performance at data rates as low as 4800 bps. The major drawback to CELP type coders is their large computational requirements. In this paper, we propose a new codebook search method that preserves the quality of the CELP vocoder with reduced complexity. The basic idea is to restrict the searching range of the random codebook by using a searching technique of the regular pulse excitation. Applying the proposed method to the CELP vocoder, we can get approximately 48% complexity reduction in the codebook search.

  • This paper describes an efficient harmonic-CELP speech coder by taking advantages of harmonic and CELP coders into account. According to frame voicing decision, the proposed harmonic-CELP coder adopts the RP-VSELP coder as a fast CELP in case of an unvoiced frame, or an improved harmonic coder in case of a voiced frame. The proposed coder has main features as follows: simple pitch detection, fast harmonic estimation, variable dimension harmonic vector quantization, perceptual weighting reflecting frequency resolution, fast harmonic synthesis, naturalness control using band voicing, and multi-mode. These features make the proposed coder require very low complexity, compared with HVXC coder To demonstrate the performance of the proposed coder, a 2.4 kbps coder has been implemented and compared with reference coders. From results of informal listening tests, the proposed coder showed good quality while requiring low delay and complexity.

  • Code Excited Linear Prediction(CELP) speech coders exhibit good performance at data rates as low as 4800bps. The major drawback to CELP type paper, a comparative performance study of three pitch searching algorithms for the CELP vocoder was conducted. For each of the algorithms, a standard pitch searching algorithm was used by the sequential pitch searching algorithm that was implimented in the QCELP vocoder. The algorithms used in this study were 1) using the skip table(TABLE), 2) using the symmetrical property of the autocorrelation(SYMMT), and 3) using the preprocessing autocorrelation(PREPC). Performance scores are presented for each of the three pitch searching algorithms based on computation speed and on pitch prediction error.

  • In this paper a way to improve the performance of the long term prediction is proposed, which adopts the Multi-band Excitation (MBE) method in addition to the Code-Excited Linear Prediction (CELP) method at low bit rates below 4.8 kbps. In the proposed method, the multiband long term prediction is performed on the periodic components which still remain after the long term prediction of the conventional CELP method. At this point, the whole frequency region is divided into subbands whose size is equal to the spacing between the harmonics of the fundamental frequency, and the periodic multiband excitation signals. are represented as the sum of sine waves approximately as large as the spectrum of the excitation signals, so that the actual characteristics of the excitation signals can be better taken into account. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, computer simulation is performed at 4.8 kbps. The 4.8 kbps DoD CELP and the 4.4 kbps IMBE were chosen as the reference vocoders for the speech quality measure. The result of the perceptual speech quality measure showed that the performance of the proposed method is better than that of the 4.8 kbps DoD CELP vocoder, and similar to that of the 4.4 kbps IMBE vocoder.
