  • The application of all regulations during building phase, plus constant vigilance in operation is essential to reducing the risk of fire aboard. A Safety by design approach is increasingly important. Fire safety regulation can solve problems which are hard to be solved by HSC code(International Code of Safety for High Speed Craft). Recently HSC code is applied for ship design development or guidance to the designer and demonstrates many advantages. In this pages, ship fire Safety are realistically modeled as ship design and the shipboard fires & muster stations are analyzed using HSC Code.

  • Due to the difficulty raised from the coupling of cavitation modeling with turbulent flow, numerical simulation for two phase flow remains one of the challenging issues in the society. This research focuses on the development of numerical code to deal with incompressible two phase flow around 2D hydrofoil by combing the cavitation model suggested by Kunz et al. with $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model. The simulation results are compared to experimental data to verify the validity of the developed code. Also, the comparison of the calculation results is made with LES results to evaluate the capability of $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. The calculation results show very good agreement with experimental observations even though this code can not grasp the small scaled bubbles in the calculation wheres LES can hold the real physics. This code will be extended to 3D compressible two phase flow for the study on the fluid dynamics in the inducers and impellers.

  • The predictions of the COBRA-IV-I code with the modified turbulent mixing and void drift models have been compared with the diabatic two-phase flow data on equilibrium quality. The turbulent mixing model based on an equal mass exchange of the existing COBRA-IV-I code has been modified to that based on an equal volume exchange between adjacent subchannels, and a void drift model has been newly incorporated in the code. To evaluate the performance of the equal volume exchange turbulent mixing model and the effects of the void drift model, the diabatic steam-water two-phase flow data obtained for the 9-rod bundle test under the typical operating conditions of the boiling water reactor(BWR) conducted by the General Electric (GE) were analyzed by the modified COBRA-IV-I code. The analysis indicates that the equal volume exchange turbulent mixing model with void drift predicts the observed two-phase flow data trends better than the equal mass exchange model, and to predict the correct data trends a more physically based void drift model need to be developed.

  • A code is developed to analyze a spherically symmetric underwater explosion. The arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian(ALE) Godunov scheme for two-phase flow is used to calculate numerical fluxes through moving control surfaces. For detonation gas of TNT and liquid water, the Jones-Wilkins-Lee(JWL) equation of states and the isentropic Tait relation are used respectively. It is suggested to use the Godunov variable to estimate the velocity of a material interface. The code is validated through comparisons with other results on the gas-water shock tube problem. It is shown that the code can handle generation of discontinuity and recovering of continuity in the normal velocity near the material interface during shock waves interact with the material interface. The developed code is applied to analyze a spherically symmetric underwater explosion. Repeated transmissions of shock waves are clearly captured. The calculated period and maximum radius of detonation gas bubble show good agreements with experimental and other numerical results.

  • The present work was undertaken to numerically analyze the defrosting phenomena of windshield glass. In order to analysis the phase change from frost to water on windshield glass by discharging hot air from a defroster nozzle, the flow and the temperature field of the cabin interior, the heat transfer through the windshield glass, and the phase change of frost should be solve simultaneously. In the present work, the flow field was obtained by solving 3-D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, and the temperature field was computed from the incompressible energy equation. The phase change process was solved by the enthalpy method. For the code validation, the temperature and the phase change of the driven cavity were calculated. The calculation showed a good agreement with other numerical results. Then, the present code was applied to the defrosting problem of a real automobile, and a good agreement with the experimental data was also obtained.

  • We demonstrate binary spectral phase coded waveform discrimination at 10 GHz for narrow band optical code-division multiple-access (NB-OCDMA) via direct electrical detection without using any optical hard-limiter. Only 9 phase-locked, 10 GHz spaced, spectral lines within a 100 GHz spectral window are used for the phase coding. Considerably high contrast ratio of 5 between signal and multiuser access interference noise can be achieved for $4{\times}10\;G\;pulse/sec$ timing coordinated OCDMA at a simple electrical receiver with 50 GHz bandwidth.

  • The Korean nuclear industry is developing a thermal-hydraulic analysis code for safety analysis of pressurized water reactors (PWRs). The new code is called the Safety and Performance Analysis Code for Nuclear Power Plants (SPACE). The SPACE code adopts advanced physical modeling of two-phase flows, mainly two-fluid three-field models which comprise gas, continuous liquid, and droplet fields and has the capability to simulate 3D effects by the use of structured and/or nonstructured meshes. The programming language for the SPACE code is C++ for object-oriented code architecture. The SPACE code will replace outdated vendor supplied codes and will be used for the safety analysis of operating PWRs and the design of advanced reactors. This paper describes the overall features of the SPACE code and shows the code assessment results for several conceptual and separate effect test problems.

  • The Helically coiled tube Once-Through Steam Generator (H-OTSG) is a key piece of equipment for compact small reactors. The present study developed and verified a thermal-hydraulic design and performance analysis computer code for a countercurrent H-OTSG installed in a small pressurized water reactor. The H-OTSG is represented by one characteristic tube in the model. The secondary side of the H-OTSG is divided into single-phase liquid region, nucleate boiling region, postdryout region, and single-phase vapor region. Different heat transfer correlations and pressure drop correlations are reviewed and applied. To benchmark the developed physical models and the computer code, H-OTSGs developed in Marine Reactor X and System-integrated Modular Advanced ReacTor are simulated by the code, and the results are compared with the design data. The overall characteristics of heat transfer area, temperature distributions, and pressure drops calculated by the code showed general agreement with the published data. The thermal-hydraulic characteristics of a typical countercurrent H-OTSG are analyzed. It is demonstrated that the code can be utilized for design and performance analysis of an H-OTSG.
