A Study of Antimicrobial Resistance in Escherichia coli and the Distribution of Indicator Microorganisms in Asan City (아산시 지표미생물의 분포와 Escherichia coli의 항생제 내성에 관한 연구)

  • Efforts to evaluate water pollution using indicator microorganisms have been underway for decades, and driven by research on water purity control applications, water quality criteria are growing more and more strict. Furthermore, recent reports indicate that high concentrations of antibiotics are not absorbed, and are present in excrement from animals and humans dosed with unnecessarily high levels of antibiotics. This has emerged as very important issue from the standpoint of being an ecological and health hazard. In this study, water pollution was analyzed through physicochemical and microbiological means, and antibiotic resistance in indicator microorganisms was assessed. In physicochemical analysis, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD)$_5$ and chemical oxygen demand (COD)$_{Mn}$ evaluation showed that pollution by organisms was highest at the G1 location with a high human population, and the DP location which has many livestock-containing households. The indicator organism levels at the G1 location were: Total Coliforms (1205 colony forming units (CFU)/100 ml), Fecal Coliforms (270 CFU/100 ml), Escherichia coli (253 CFU/100 ml) and Fecal Streptococci (210 CFU/100 ml), while for the DP location levels were: Total Coliforms (1480 CFU/100 ml), Fecal Coliforms (438 CFU/100 ml), E. coli (560 CFU/100 ml), and Fecal Streptococci (348 CFU/100 ml). Levels of fecal indicator microorganisms such as Fecal Coliforms, E. coli and Fecal Streptococci were high at all locations in the fall (the period after the rainy season), and the yearly distribution was similar between these organisms. If the number of livestock-containing households was high, almost all strains of E. coli (as distinct from the other indicator organisms) showed resistance to antibiotics, with the degree of resistance varying between areas. E. coli strains from the OY area in particular, which has a high population density, showed strong resistance to AM10 and Va30. While strong antibiotic resistance was observed overall at the DP and OY locations, no resistance was observed at the EB location.

산업의 주식시장 선행성에 관한 소고(小考)

  • 본 논문의 목적은 과거의 산업 포트폴리오 수익률이 확률추세로부터 어떻게 전체 주식시장과 두 가지 거시경제 변수인 경기동행지수와 산업생산 등을 예측할 수 있는 지를 알아보는 데에 있다. 이를 위하여 본 연구에서는 연구모형을 설정한 후 세 가지 검정절차를 제시하고 이를 실증적으로 분석하였다. 당월의 전체 주식시장 수익률은 과거의 시차를 지닌 특정 산업부문 포트폴리오 수익률에 대하여 양(+)의 상관관계를 유지하고 있다는 '예측 1'과 전체 주식시장의 수익률은 특정 산업부문의 수익률에 대하여 선행성을 지닐 수 없다는 '예측 2'에 대한 검정 결과는 '예측 1'과 '예측 2'가 지지되고 있음을 파악할 수 있었다. 그리고 산업별 포트폴리오 수익률과 거시경제변수 간의 높은 상관관계를 토대로 하여 전체주식시장 수익률 예측을 가능하게 하는 업종 정보의 점진적 확산 현상이 발생하게 되는가를 검토하기 위하여 각 산업들의 포트폴리오 수익률과 전체 주식시장 수익률이 VAR모형을 토대로 볼 경우 Granger 인과관계를 갖고 있는 지를 분석하였다. 분석결과 21개 업종은 각 산업별 포트폴리오 수익률이 전체 주식시장 수익률을 5% 수준에서 통계적으로 유의한 영향을 주고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이들 21개의 산업별 포트폴리오 수익률은 경제적으로도 중요한 의미를 지니고 있어 산업제품의 가격 상승과 하락이 경제에 미치는 영향을 파악할 수 있다. 특히 음료 업종에서 전체 주식시장 수익률과 상호간의 인과성을 나타내었으며, 인터넷과 화장품 업종에서는 전체 주식시장 수익률이 이들 업종에 대하여 일방적인 영향을 보이고 있음을 알 수 있었다.>$mgN\;{\cdot}\;L^{-1}$ 및 0.000-0.804 $mgN\;{\cdot}\;L^{-1}$이였다. 규소농도는 0.0-6.2 $mgSi\;{\cdot}\;L^{-1}$의 범위로 3-5월에 매우 낮았으며, 계절적인 변화가 뚜렷히 나타났다. 저질의 입자는 0-125인 silt및 coarse silt로 이루어져 있으며, COD는 51.4-116.9 $mgO_2\;{\cdot}\;gdw^{-1}$로 평균 93.0 $mgO_2\;{\cdot}\;gdw^{-1}$ 이였다. 저질내의 TP및 TN의 농도는 각각 0.04-1.46 $mgP\;{\cdot}\;gdw^{-1}$ 및 0.12-1.03 $mgN\;{\cdot}\;gdw^{-1}$이었다. 표층의 엽록소 a의 정점별 평균값은 정점 1, 2 및 3에서 각각 15.6, 15.2 및 16.0 $mg\;{\cdot}\;m^{-3}$으로 유사하였다. 식물플랑크톤은 총 49종이 출현하였으며, 생물량은 50-23, 350 cells ${\cdot}\;mL^{-1}$로 2001년 9월에 가장 많았다. 이 시기의 우점종은 녹조류인 Schroederia judayi이였으며, 생물량은 20,417 cells ${\cdot}\;mL^{-1}$이였다. 송지호의 수질을 개선하기 위해서는 인위적으로 화학성층을 파괴시켜 심충에 용존산소를 공급시켜야 할 것으로 판단되며, 모래톱으로 인해 막혀져 있는 해수

Implementation of Stopping Criterion Algorithm using Sign Change Ratio for Extrinsic Information Values in Turbo Code (터보부호에서 외부정보에 대한 부호변화율을 이용한 반복중단 알고리즘 구현)

  • Turbo code, a kind of error correction coding technique, has been used in the field of digital mobile communication system. As the number of iterations increases, it can achieves remarkable BER performance over AWGN channel environment. However, if the number of iterations is increased in the several channel environments, any further iteration results in very little improvement, and requires much delay and computation in proportion to the number of iterations. To solve this problems, it is necessary to device an efficient criterion to stop the iteration process and prevent unnecessary delay and computation. In this paper, it proposes an efficient and simple criterion for stopping the iteration process in turbo decoding. By using sign changed ratio of extrinsic information values in turbo decoder, the proposed algorithm can largely reduce the average number of iterations without BER performance degradation. As a result of simulations, the average number of iterations is reduced by about $12.48%{\sim}22.22%$ compared to CE algorithm and about $20.43%{\sim}54.02%$ compared to SDR algorithm.

THE STUDY ON COURSE OF THE INFERIOR ALVEOLAR CANAL IN THE MANDIBULAR RAMUS USING CONEBEAM CT (하악지에서의 하치조신경관 주행에 대한 Conebeam CT를 이용한 연구)

  • Objectives: This study was performed to evaluate course of the inferior alveolar canal in the mandibular ramus and to find safety zone when ramal bone is harvested. Patients and Methods: From January, 2009 to February, 2009, the 20 patients who visited in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Sanbon Dental Hospital. Wonkwang University and the Conebeam CT was taken of various chief complaints, were selected. The patients who had left and right mandibular first molar and incisor missing, jaw fracture and bone pathology were excluded. The R point was defined as the point which occlusal plane was crossed to the mandibular anterior ramus(external oblique ridge). In the cross-sectional coronal and axial views, the inferior alveolar canal position to the R point, buccal bone width(BW), alveolar crest distance(ACD), distance from alveolar crest to occlusal plane(COD) and inferior alveolar canal to sagittal plane(CS) were measured and horizontal distance(HD), vertical distance(VD) and nearest distance(ND) were measured. Results: The inferior alveolar canal is located $6.19{\pm}1.21\;mm$ from the R point. Horizontal distance from the R point were $13.07{\pm}2.45\;mm$, vertical distance from the R point were $14.24{\pm}2.41\;mm$ and nearest distance from the R point were $10.12{\pm}1.76\;mm$. The course of the inferior alveolar canal was positioned within $0.61{\pm}0.68\;mm$. The distance from external buccal bone to the inferior alveolar canal was increased from the R point anteriorly. Conclusions: It is considered that the mandibular ramus from the R point to 10 mm anteriorly can be harvested safely at ramal bone grafting.

Development of the EMC-based Empirical Model for Estimating Pollutant Loads from Small Agricultural Watersheds (농촌 소유역에서 EMC를 이용한 오염물질 부하량 산정기법의 개발)

  • In this paper, a new and integrated approach easily used to calculate the pollutant loads from agricultural watersheds is suggested. Basic concepts of this empirical tool are based on the hypotheses that variations in event mean concentrations(EMCs) of the pollutants from a given agricultural watershed during rainstorms are only due to the rainfall pattern. This assumption would be feasible to agricultural watersheds whose land uses does not change during the cultivation period overlapped by rainy season and also in which point-sources of the pollutants are rare. Therefore, if EMC data sets through extensive sampling from various rural areas are available, it is possible to establish relationships between EMCs, shapes and land uses of the watersheds, and rainfall events. For this purpose, fifty one sets of EMC values were obtained from nine different watersheds, and those data were used to develop predictive tools for the EMCs of 55, COD, TN and TP in rainfall runoff. The results of the statistical tests for those formulas show that they are not only fairly good in predicting actual EMC values of some parameters, but also useful in terms of calculating pollutant loads on any time-spans such as the day of rainfall event or weekly, monthly, and yearly. Their applicability was briefly demonstrated and discussed. Also, the unit loads calculated from EMCs based on different land uses and real rainfall data over one of the watershed used for this study. were provided, and they are compared with other well-known unit loads.

Water Quality Analysis of Hongcheon River Basin Under Climate Change (기후변화에 따른 홍천강 유역의 수질 변화 분석)

  • Impacts of climate change are being observed in the globe as well as the Korean peninsula. In the past 100 years, the average temperature of the earth rose about 0.75 degree in celsius, while that of Korean peninsula rose about 1.5 degree in celsius. The fifth Assessment Report of IPCC(Intergovermental Panel on Climate Change) predicts that the water pollution will be aggravated by change of hydrologic extremes such as floods and droughts and increase of water temperature (KMA and MOLIT, 2009). In this study, future runoff was calculated by applying climate change scenario to analyze the future water quality for each targe period (Obs : 2001 ~ 2010, Target I : 2011 ~ 2040, Target II : 2041 ~ 2070, Target III : 2071 ~ 2100) in Hongcheon river basin, Korea. In addition, The future water quality was analyzed by using multiple linear regression analysis and artificial neural networks after flow-duration curve analysis. As the results of future water quality prediction in Hongcheon river basin, we have known that BOD, COD and SS will be increased at the end of 21 century. Therefore, we need consider long-term water and water quality management planning and monitoring for the improvement of water quality in the future. For the prediction of more reliable future water quality, we may need consider various social factors with climate components.

Analysis and Antioxidant Activity of Volatile Extracts from Plants Commonly Used in Korean Foods (한국 식품재료로 상용되는 식물로부터 분리한 향기추출물의 항산화능 탐색)

  • Volatile compounds of dropwort (Oenanthe javanica DC), crown daisy (Chrysanthemum coronarium L. var. spatiosum), and sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) were isolated by steam distillation under reduced pressure (DRP) and liquid-liquid continuous extraction (LLE). Aroma extracts of the plants were identified by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and their antioxidant activities were evaluated in two different assays. The aroma extracts isolated from dropwort, crown daisy, and sesame inhibited the oxidation of hexanal by 25%, 95%, and 99%, respectively, for one month at the $500{\mu}g/mL$ level. They inhibited malonaldehyde formation from cod liver oil by 48%, 54%, and 29%, respectively, at the $500{\mu}g/mL$ level. Their antioxidant activities were comparable to those of the natural antioxidant, ${\alpha}-tocopherol$.

Development of Sandwich ELISA for the Detection of Mackerel in Processed Foods (가공식품 중 고등어의 검출을 위한 ELISA의 개발)

  • There have been few studies related to ELISA for mackerel. In this study we developed a sandwich ELISA for mackerel in processed foods using rabbit polyclonal antibodies against mackerel parvalbumin, the major allergen of mackerel and heat-stable protein. The parvalbumin was purified by ammonium sulfate precipitation and Sephadex G-50 column chromatography. From the standard ELISA curves, the detection limit of parvalbumin was 3 ng/mL and the detection range of mackerel was 5-5,000 ${mu}g/mL$. We further investigated the cross-reactivity of the antibodies toward mackerel, mackerel pike, salmon, flatfish, armorclad rockfish, cod fish, squid, shrimp, blue crab, and lobster. The antibodies were specific for mackerel only. The mean assay recoveries in cooked cream soup, baby food, sausage, and sauce spiked with 0.01 to 0.3% mackerel were 104, 101, 54, and 0%, respectively. In sample tests of 16 commercial items, the qualitative coincidence ratio of assay result and indication was 75%.

Physico-Chemical Characteristics of Aquacultural Discharging Water in Jeju Island (제주도내 양식장 배출수의 이화학적 특성 분석)

  • Physical and chemical analyses of water discharged from 4 crowded farms (Sungsan, Pyosun, Wimi and Daejung) in Jeju island were performed from July, 2006 to Dec, 2006, and the result of the analyses showed that hydrogen ion concentrations (pH) for water discharged from Sungsan farm was 7.74, Pyosun was 7.68, Wimi was 7.68 and Daejung was 7.7. Salinity levels for Sungsan, Pyosun and Wimi had an average of 31$\sim$33 $^\circ$/$_\circ$$_\circ$ indicating characteristics of far distance areas, whereas that of Daejung was 28.81 %, which was far lower compared to regular sea water salinity. As the result of measuring dissolved oxygen (DO) for each area, each area showed first graded DO for each discharged water based on water quality level for each sea district. The result of measuring the temperature for discharged water showed that water temperatures for summer were 23$\sim$25$^\circ$C, and those for winter were 16$\sim$ 18$^\circ$C. Nitrogen concentrations for discharged water exceeded each sea area's water quality level in all farms. In the case of phosphate, its average value was 0.48 mg/l for Sungsan, 0.55 mg/I for Pyosun, 0.66 mg/I for Wimi, and 0.44 mg/l for Daejung, and chemical oxygen demand (COD) was shown to be 1.5 mg/l 1.8 mg/I, 1.6 mg/I and 2.3 mg/I for Sungsan, Pyosun, Wimi and Daejung respectively. For suspended solids (SS), the average concentration was 19.3 mg/I, 21.2 mg/I, 21.3 mg/I and 18.5 mg/I for Sungsan, Pyosun, Wimi and Daejung respectively. The results of physical and chemical analyses for discharged water in farms based on time showed that almost all items were shown to increase in the forenoon and decrease, overall, in the afternoon.

Biological Treatment of Processed-Leachate from Landfills by Reed (Phragmites australis)-Bed in a Continuous Flow System (갈대-상(床)을 이용한 쓰레기 매립지 침출수의 생물학적 연속흐름 처리)

  • We investigate the biological treatment of processed-leachate from SUDOKWON landfill site in Korea by the reed (Phragmites australis)-bed with a continuous flow system. The reed individuals showing superior growth in processed-leachate experiment were selected among the reeds of thirteen natural habitats by means of the comparisons between the removal rates of nutrient salts, eco-physiological responses and growth. The reed-beds (combination of the reed individuals showing superior growth with helper microorganisms) were continuously supplied with processed-leachate. We monitored the effluents that passing through the reed-beds during the experiment period. After five weeks, analysis results of effluent from each reed-bed were as follows; chromaticity, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total dissolved solid and salinity decreased $29.5{\sim}36.9\%,\;49.4{\sim}67.2\%,\;42.1{\sim}94.6\%,\;74.5{\sim}88.8\%,\;15.6{\sim}20.8\%,\;17.5{\sim}35.4\%\;and\;15.3{\sim}34.7\%$, respectively. These results represented the substantial improvement of water-quality after passing through reed-bed in a continuous flow system.
