  • Wet air oxidation (WAO) of oily sludge was carried out using $Fe^{3+}$ as catalyst, placed in a 0.5 L batch autoclave in the temperature range of $250-330^{\circ}C$. Experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of temperature, the initial COD, reaction time, concentration of catalyst and $O_2$ excess (OE) on the oxidation of the oily sludge. The results showed that in the WAO 88.4% COD was achieved after 9 min reaction at temperature of $330^{\circ}C$, OE of 0.8 and the initial COD of 20000 mg/L. Temperature was found to have a significant impact on the oxidation of oily sludge. Adding a catalyst significantly improved the COD removal. Homogenous catalyst, $Fe^{3+}$, showed effective removal for pollutants. COD removal was 99.7% in the catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO) over $Fe^{3+}$ catalyst. The results proved that the CWAO was an effective pretreatment method for the oily sludge.

  • A new approach to the solubilization of excess activated sludge by the inoculation of lactic acid bacteria was studied to reduce the amount of sludge produced in the activated sludge treatment process. Aerobic microorganism in sludge was lysed in anaerobic condition and the cytoplasmic substance eluted was utilized as a carbon source by lactic acid bacteria. On the basis of sludge solubilization efficiency, Lactobacillus brevis and Leuconostoc mesenteroides subsp mesenteroides were selected the best candidates among five kinds of Lactobacillus sp. and seven kinds of Leuconostoc sp. The sludge solubilization efficiency by heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria was more efficient than that of homofermentative bacteria. Initial value of soluble COD (sCOD) was 1050 mg/L at the initial inoculation time increased to 3070 mg/L (192% solubilization) at 96 h of the incubation time. The inoculation of lactobacillus brevis to the sludge resulted in 2824% increase in sCOD value after 96 h of incubation than the control experiment. Leuconostoc mesenteroides subsp mesenteroides showed 152% increase of solubilization and 30% increase of S-COD/T-COD on 96 h of incubation time. Considering the increase of S-COD by the inoculation of Leuconostoc sp. on 24 h, 10% inoculation of lactic acid bacteria to the sludge was most effective.

  • In this study, the period for stabilization in the case of recycling leachate was compared and analyzed with the case of non-cycle type, using lysimeters filled with municipal organic refuse. The lysimeters were operated with various detention time. In addition, the degree of stabilization was estimated by the way of measuring the quantity of gas from landfills. As the results, the recycle of leachate, which was modified as the neutral level of pH, accelerated the biological decomposition of organics with the raped growth of anaerobic bacteria in the system, and reduced the period for the stabilization. In the case of BOD and COD in leachate, COD. which had been originality similar to BOD, had increased more rapidly than BOD as time lapsed. Moreover, the quantity of gas from the recycle reactor was larger than from the non-cycle reactor. The shorter the detention time of leachate gas, the larger the quantity of gas produced in the lysimeters.

  • Dry washing by air and sand to clean dishes was investigated for establishing a dry washing process in a kitchen. Thirty seasonings and foods as dirt markers and fourteen kinds of dishes were used for the experiment, and washing efficiency was evaluated by COD-MN (mg/L). It was found that air dry washing effectively reduced COD-MN of some dirt markers but not effective at all to some dirt markers. It could be also said that dirt markers would not be completely removed by air dry washing. The shape of dishes also affected COD-MN reduction by air dry washing. Sand dry washing showed excellent efficiency on COD-MN reduction. Combination of air and sand dry washing may be necessary to make a dish dry washing system which is completely independent from water.

  • A laboratory experiments were performed to investigate the treatment of photographic processing wastewater by chemical oxidation and biological treatment system. The effect of reaction conditions such as hydrogen peroxide dosage, ferrous sulfate dosage and pH on the COD removal in Fenton oxidation were investigated. The optimal dosage of hydrogen peroxide was 2.58 M and 3.87 M for the developing and fixing process wastewater, respectively. The Fenton oxidation was most efficient in the pH range of 3-5 and the optimal condition for initial reaction pH was 5 for a developing process wastewater. With iron powder catalyst, the COD for a developing process wastewater was removed in lower pH than with ferrous sulfate catalyst. The removal efficiency of COD for refractory compounds such as Diethyleneglycol, Benzylalcohol, Hydroxylamine Sulfate, Ammonium Thiosulfate, Ammonium Ferric EDTA and Disodium EDTA in the photogaphic wastewater was found than 90% except Potassium Carbonate. When the photographic processing wastewater after pretreatment by Fenton oxidation was treated with batch activated sludge process, the addition of $KH_2PO_4$ as a phosphorous compound improved the removal efficiency of COD. During the continuous biological treatment of developing and fixing process wastewater after pretreatment by Fenton oxidation, the effluent COD concentration less than 100 mg/l was obtained at 0.425 and 0.25 kgCOD/m$^3$.d, respectively.

  • A two-phase UASB system was operated for high-rate treatment of concentrated distillery wastewater. The phase separation was obtained by adjusting pH in each reactor. When influent SS concentration was 4.1/g/l, the first phase UASB reactor was effectively operated up to the loading rate of 16.5kg $COD/m^3.day$, producing 3.9g HAc/l.day. In the methanogenic UASB reactor, loading rate up to 44kg $COD/m^3.day$ could be applied while removing 80% of influent COD with a specific gas production of 16.5 l/l. day. After the formation granular sludge in both reactors, it was possible to maintain the appropriate pH in the first phase only by recirculating the effluent from methanogenic phase without the addition of alkaline chemicals.

  • This paper presents the experimental results in five months operation from a combined anaerobic/oxic system treating swine waste with average concentrations in organic matter and nitrogen of 7,930 mgCOD/L and 671 mgTKN/L, respectively. The system was formed using an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor and oxic reactor connected in series with a recycling line of oxic effluents to UASB for its denitrification. The UASB reactor was operated at an organic volumetric loading rate (VLR) of $2.1{\sim}4.5\;kgTCOD/m^3$/day and the removal efficiency of TCOD was $66.3{\sim}85.4%$. The overall removal efficiency of TCOD was more than 99%. The oxic reactor was operated at a nitrogen VLR of $0.10{\sim}0.20\;kgTKN/m^3$/day and the nitrification efficiency was 75%. However, the complete denitrification was observed in the UASB reactor that was due to the optimal temperature and sufficient carbon source. The overall removal rate of TN was about 80%. About 76.2% of the influent COD mass was accountable in a COD mass balance at a level of VLR $3.64\;kgCOD/m^3$/day. The production rate of methane was $0.32\;LCH_4/gCOD_{removed}$ when influent organics, VLR, were recorded by $3.4{\sim}4.5\;kgCOD/m^3$/day.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate integrated anaerobic hydrogen fermentation and membrane bioreactor (MBR) for on-site domestic wastewater treatment and resource recovery. A synthetic wastewater (COD 17,000 mg/L) was used as artificial brown water which will be discharged from urine diversion toilet and fed into a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) type anaerobic reactor with inclined plate. The effluent of anaerobic reactor mixed with real household grey water (COD 700 mg/L) was further treated by MBR for reuse. An optimum condition maintained in anaerobic reactor was HRT of 8 hrs, pH 5.5, SRT of 5 days and temperature of $37^{\circ}C$. COD removal of 98% was achieved from the overall system. Total gas production rate and hydrogen content was 4.6 L/day and 52.4% respectively. COD mass balance described the COD distribution in the system via reactor byproducts and effluent COD concentration. The results of this study asserts that, anaerobic hydrogen fermentation combined with MBR is a potent system in stabilizing waste strength and clean hydrogen recovery which could be implemented for onsite domestic wastewater treatment and reuse.

  • Using empirical data of fish performance and physiological limits as well as physical stimuli and environmental data, a cod-end selectivity model based on a chaotic behavior model using the psycho-hydraulic wheel and neural-network approach was established to predict fish escape or herding responses in trawl and cod-end designs. Fish responses in the cod-end were categorized as escape or herding reactions based on their relative positions and reactions to the net wall. Fish movements were regulated by three factors: escape time, a visual looming effect, and an index of body girth-mesh size. The model was applied to haddock in a North Sea bottom trawl including frequencies of movement components, swimming speed, angular velocity, distance to net wall, and the caught-fish ratio; simulation results were similar to field observations. The ratio of retained fish in the cod-end was limited to 37-95% by optomotor coefficient values of 0.3-1.0 and to 13-67% by looming coefficient values of 0.1-1.0. The selectivity curves generated by this model were sensitive to changes in mesh size, towing speed, mesh type, and mesh shape.

  • Fenton process is one of the most effective advanced oxidation processes for the removal of pollutants from wastewater. In this study, while ferrous iron was used in conventional Fenton process (CFP); nano-sized iron(II, III) oxide was experienced in modified Fenton process (MFP) as a new catalyst alternative. In order to enhance their oxidation efficiencies, both CFP and MFP were combined with ultrasonication at 53 kHz fixed frequency. Thus, the influences of both catalyst iron species and ultrasonication on color and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removals from synthetic textile wastewater including Maxilon Red GRL 200% dyestuff were investigated experimentally. While the COD and color removal rates were found as 72.5% and 69.7% via CFP; they were 87% and 75.8% by ultrasonicated CFP, respectively. The color and COD removals were 40.6% and 64.8% via MFP, and 49.9 and 73.1% by ultrasonicated MFP, respectively. Therefore, it was found that the simultaneously usage of ultrasonication with CFP and MFP was improved the COD and color removal efficiencies and oxidation rates even at lower H2O2 dosages, compared to individual CFP and MFP. Moreover, the color and COD removal kinetics were also modelled mathematically and compared in the study.
