  • Fracture mechanics analysis for cracked pipes is essential for applying the leak-before-break (LBB) concept to nuclear piping design. For LBB assessment, crack instability and leak rate should be predicted accurately for through-wall cracked pipes. In a nuclear piping system, elbows are connected with straight pipes by circumferential welding; this weld region is often considered a critical location. Hence, accurate crack assessment is necessary for cracks in the interface between elbows and straight pipes. In this study, the stress intensity factor (SIF) and elastic crack opening displacement (COD) were estimated through detailed 3D elastic finite element (FE) analyses. Based on the results, closed-form solutions of shape factors for calculating the SIFs and elastic CODs were proposed for circumferential through-wall cracks in the abovementioned interfaces under internal pressure. In addition, the effect of the elbow on shape factors was investigated by comparing the results with the existing solutions for a straight pipe.

  • Variable thickness plates are commonly used as structural members in the majority of industrial sectors. Previous fracture mechanics researches on variable thickness plates were limited to mode I loading cases. In practice, however, cracks are usually located inclined to the loading direction. In this respect, combined mode(mode I/II) stress intensity factors $K_{I}$ and $K_{II}$ at the crack tip for a variable thickness plate were obtained by 3-dimensional finite element analysis. Variable thickness plates containing a slant edge crack were chosen. The parameters used in this study were dimensionless crack $length{\lambda}$, slant $angle{\alpha}$, thickness $ratio{\beta}$ and width ratio{\omega}$. Stress intensity factors were calculated by crack opening displacement(COD) and crack sliding displacement(CSD)method proposed by Ingraffea and Manu.

  • In order to use effectively a machinery part with fillet, it is necessary to determine a proper fillet shape in design step, Study of such problem by fracture mechanical criterion is rare. So, this paper focuses on the design of fillet radius in fracture mechanical aspect. Finite element method was used to obtain crack tip stress intensity factor. Stress intensity factor was calculated by COD(crack opening displacement0method proposed by Ingraffea and Manu. The parameter used in this study are thickness ration, filet radium and crack length . If fillet radius increase , crack propagation may be accelerated. Critical crack length is inversely proportional to fillet radius.

  • A study on the fatigue fracture at electro discharge machined(E.D.M) surface has been made with special emphases on the microstructure variation and the residual stress distribution at the E.D.H heat affected zone. Results obtained are summarized as follows. (1) E.D.M brings about a variation of microstructure in heat affected zone, structures of molten, quenching, tempering are formed in order of formation from E.D.M surface. (2) Residual stress generated by E.D.M reduces the fatigue strength of the material through the influencing fatigue crack initiation and growth. (3) Magnitude of the residual stress existed in a microscopic area is approximately estimated by a COD measurement method which was originally suggested by authors.

  • An engineering estimation equation for the crack opening displacement(COD) is proposed for a complex cracked pipe, based on the reference stress approach. To define the reference stress, a simple plastic limit load analysis for the complex cracked pipe subjected to combined bending and tension is performed considering the crack closure effect in the compressive-stressed region. Comparison with ten published test data and the results from existing method shows that the present method not only reduces non-conservatism associated with the existing method, but also provides consistent and overall satisfactory results.

  • Variable thickness plates are commonly encountered in the majority of mechanical/structural components of industrial applications. And, as a result of the unsymmetry of the structure or the load and the anisoptropy of the materials, the cracks in engineering structures are generally subjected to combined stresses. In spite of considerable practical interest, however, a few fracture mechanics study on combined mode crack in a variable thickness plate have carried out. In this respect, combined mode I/III stress intensity factors $K_I$ and $K_III$ at the crack tip for a variable thickness plate were obtained by 3-dimensional finite element analysis. Variable thickness plates containing a central slant crack were chosen. The parameters used in this study were dimensionless crack length $\lamda$, crack slant angle $\alpha$, thickness ratio $\beta$ and width ratio $\omega$. Stress intensity factors were calculated by crack opening displacement(COD) and crack tearing displacement(CTD) method.

  • When structures are loaded by a combination of primary and secondary stresses, plasticity effects occur which cannot be evaluated by a simple linear addition of the effects resulting from the two independent stress systems. Thermal stress due to temperature gradient is classified as secondary stress. It is known that secondary stress is released as increase of plastic zone. In this paper, two and three dimensional elastic-plastic finite element analyses are performed for the cracked plates and pipes under combined thermal and mechanical loading. And V-factor is introduced to account for plasticity effect. The present results provide that V-factor is function of thermal factor and loading and is consistent regardless of geometry. We developed the prediction method of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics parameter under combined primary and secondary loading from the present results.

  • To verify the existing theory, non-propagating crack(NPC) does not exist in Ti which fulfills the good conditions for being of NPC, NPC detection in Ti was tried out. Also, the conception of fatigue limit in Ti and a main cause for NPC being were inquired. NPC was detected in both sharp notch root ( $\rho$=0.02mm) and micro pit (diameter = 0.25mm) which held fast to the end under stressing of fatigue limit. Therefore, the existing theory was identified as mistake. But, NPC can not be detected in smooth specimen. This fact would be due to the presumption that NPC is very small or crack does not initiate in smooth specimen. Anyway, the fatigue limit of Ti does not correspond to critical stress of crack initiation but correspond to critical stress of NPC growth. Measurement on the COD of NPC in Ti showed that the crack tip was closed even under the peak stress level at fatigue limit. But, after stress relieving annealing crack tip was opened. Consequently, compressive residual stress which is induced around the crack tip is considered to be the factor causing the NPC being.

  • Post weld heat treatment(PWHT) of weldment of the low alloy steel is carried out to remove residual stress existing in weldment and to improve fracture toughness, but it is often observed that there occurs grain boundary failure and that fracture toughness decreases in weld heat affected zone(HAZ)because of PWHT. In this paper, the effect of heating rate and holding time of PWHT on fracture toughness were evaluated by crack opening displacement (CDD)test and micro-hardness test under the constant stress simulated residual stress in HAZ of Cr-Mo steel. The experimental results are as follow; (1)Transition temperature of weld HAZ after PWHT was dependent upon heating rate greater than holding time, and fracture toughness was decreased with an increase of the heating rate. (2)Softening ration of the notch tip was increased with holding time within one hour and saturated after one hour, but under applied stress it was increasing continuously. (3)The average hardness value in weld HAZ was increased with heating rate of PWHT.
