The habitat characteristics and the age of endangered miho spine loach, Cobitis choii, were investigated in Ji Stream, Guem River, Korea in 2011 to provide baseline data for its restoration. The habitat of the C. choii was the downstream portion composed of sand, and the sand particle sizes was mostly 0.21~1.18 mm (88.7%). Juveniles (age 0+) preferred slower water velocity (0~25 cm/sec) and a lower water depth (5~20 cm) than did individuals who were more than 1 year old, as this group inhabited rapids with 10~25 cm/sec of water velocity and 20~50 cm of water depth. The C. choii rapidly grew during the active period from April to October and they stopped growing during the hibernating period from November to March. The estimated age of the C. choii (females) based on their total length distribution during the spawning period (June) indicated that 1-, 2-, 3- and more than 4-year-old were 40~61 mm, 64~79 mm, 80~91 mm and 92~106 mm, respectively.
Habitat, reproduction and feeding habit of endangered fish Koreocobitis naktongensis from Jaho stream, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea were investigated from March 2010 to June 2011. This species inhabits at the upper and middle parts of stream, which were composed of cobbles and pebbles bottom. The current velocities in these microhabitat were 5~10 cm/sec and depth were 50~110cm. The sex ratio of female to male was 1 : 0.92. It is presumed that the spawning season is from May to June when water temperatures were 17 ~ 20$^{\circ}C$. The average number of mature eggs in ovary were about 22,643 (15,909~30,323), mean egg diameter was 0.87${\pm}$0.05mm. K. naktongensis fed mainly on Chironomidae (IRI, 72.0%) and Ephydridae (26.9%) of Diptera.
The age and spawning characteristics of Iksookimia pacifica were investigated in this study to provide baseline data for its ecological characteristics in the Bukcheon (stream), Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do, Korea from January to December, 2013. Age groups of I. pacifica (female) estimated by the frequency distribution of total length in the spawning season indicated that the 30~49 mm group is 1 year old, the 50~74 mm group is 2 years old, the 75~99 mm group is 3 years old, the 100~124 mm group is 4 years old, and the 130~160 mm group is $5{\leq}$years old. The sex ratio (♂/♀) was 0.63, and females were 30~60 mm larger than males. The lamina circularis at the base of pectoral fins in males as a secondary sexual character was created at the 13th month after hatching. The spawning season according to the gonadosomatic index (GSI) was July to August (main spawning season in July) with water temperatures of $20{\sim}25^{\circ}C$. The average number of eggs was $2,503{\pm}1,337$ with a diameter of $1.11{\pm}0.04mm$ in mature eggs.
Extensive monitoring of aquatic organisms in rice paddy fields has been difficult due to laborious sampling methods such as quadrat sampling using a hand net. This study aimed to analyze temporal and regional community compositions of aquatic organisms collected with a less time-consuming sampling method. This method involved using submerged funnel traps in rice paddy fields. Submerged funnel traps were useful for capturing taxa containing species that are indicative of environmental changes and highly mobile species that feed on waterbirds. Fifteen taxa including Ampullariidae, Cobitidae, Chironomidae, Hydrophilidae and Dytiscidae determined the community compositions. Among the major taxa, only Chironomidae resistant to environmental disturbances represented temporal variations of aquatic organism communities in rice paddy fields. Ampullariidae, Dytiscidae, and Hydrophilidae, which are prone to be affected by anthropogenic activities, differed among regions.
Feeding ecology of endangered Korean endemic miho spine loach, Cobitis choii, was investigated in Jicheon Stream, Geumgang River, Korea to provide ecological characteristics and baseline data for its restoration. C. choii is active during daylight hours above sand from March to October when the water temperature exceeded $13^{\circ}C$, but tended hibernate in the stream bottoms (sand) in the winter months (November~February) when the water temperature was lower than $13^{\circ}C$. They fed (index of relative importance, IRI) mainly Diptera (69.9%), Copepoda (23.2%), Arcellidae (2.3%), Branchiopoda (2.0%) and Ploima (2.0%). And their small juvenile (age 0+) fed mainly small size, Ploima and Branchiopoda, however, they ate mainly large size, Chilonomidae, while growing to adult fish (age 2+~3+).
Growth and spawning ecology of Cobitis lutheri (Teleoste: Cobitidae) were investigated in the Samcheon Stream, Mangyeong River, Jeollabuk-do, Korea from 2005 to 2006. Age group of C. lutheri estimated from the total length indicated that the 40 ~ 60 mm group is 1 year old, the 60 ~ 80 mm group is 2 years old, and the 80 ~ 110mm group is 3 ${\leq}$ years old. The sex ratio (Male/Female) was 0.78, and the female was 20 ~ 30 mm larger than the male. Lamina circularis at the base of pectoral fins in the males as a secondary sexual character was created 12 months after hatching. A change of lateral coloration of males was observed from April to September. The spawning season was early to middle July with water temperatures of $24{\sim}26^{\circ}C$. The average number of eggs was $1,127{\pm}453$ with the egg diameter of $1.09{\pm}0.02$ mm.
Ecological characteristics of Cobitis pacifica inhabited in the Yeongok Stream, Gangwon-do, Korea was investigated from May 2006 to August 2007. The major habitat was composed of sand bottom with current velocities of $0.23{\sim}0.56m\;sec^{-1}$ and depths of $20{\sim}50cm$. The sex ratio of female to male was 1 : 0.93. It was presumed that the spawning season was the period of water temperatures of $25{\sim}27^{\circ}C$. Sexually matured individuals appeared over the two years of age. Frequency analysis of body length indicated that the group with $40{\sim}59mm$ in body length was one-year-old, the group of $60{\sim}89mm$ was two-years-old, the group of $90{\sim}109mm$ was three-years-old, and the group of over 110 mm was four-years-old. The average number of eggs in the ovaries was estimated as 809 per matured female. Main prey items were Ephemeroptera and Diptera.
The egg development and early life history of Korean endangered natural monument fish, Iksookimia choii, were investigated in 2006. The eggs from the females were obtained by injecting 10 IU $g^{-1}$ of human chorionic gonadotropin and inseminated by wet method in the laboratory. The fertilized eggs were $1.1\sim1.3mm$ in diameter and had no oil globules. Hatching of the embryo began about 24 hrs after fertilization under water temperature of $25^{\circ}C$. The newly-hatched larvae were $2.5\sim2.7mm$ in total length (TL), and their mouth and anus were not yet opened. Six days after hatching, the postlarvae were $4.7\sim5.4mm$ TL, and tip of the caudal notochord was flexed $45^{\circ}$ upward. The juveniles stage was reached when all fin-rays were formed at 35 days after hatching, and their total length were $20\sim22mm$.
The Nakdong nose loach, Koreocobitis naktongensis is an endangered freshwater fish endemic to Korea. The spawning behaviour of the K. naktongensis was observed after treating Ovaprim in laboratory aquarium from 20~27 April 2010. The behavioral patterns were categorized into three stages of pre-spawning, spawning and post-spawning behaviors. Before spawning K. naktongensis usually repeated taking a rest and swimming. On average, initial spawning activity started 11 to 12 hours later after injection with Ovaprim. During the spawning period, the number of spawning acts ranged from 1 to 18. The spawning ratio of female to male was 1 : 1. The male embraced the back of the female's dorsal fin with his lamina circularis. It looked like a complete circle at that time. After spawning, parental care was not observed. Individuals not participating in spawning have been observed to feed on some of the fertilized eggs.
The distribution of fish (Cobitidae and Cyprinidae) and amphibians together with related environmental factors were surveyed at 30 randomly selected rice-fields (15 flooded unmanaged rice fields (FUR) and 15 unflooded managed rice fields (UMR)) near the Yedang reservoir in Korea, eight times from May to August in 2012. The total number of species captured from the entire survey area was 13 species with 8 families of fish and 5 species of amphibians. The number of species of Cyprinidae fish captured in FUR was higher than that in UMR. Upon the comparative analysis on the distribution of fish and amphibians in FUR and UMR, it was found that the number of Cyprinidae fish captured in FUR was significantly higher than that in UMR while the number of Cobitidae fish captured in UMR was higher than that in FUR. According to the analysis on the environmental factors that affect the distribution of fish, Cyprinidae fish tend to appear in rice-fields, that were flooded in winter, near the Yedang reservoir while Cobitidae fish tend to appear in rice fields that draws its water supply from forest reservoir and have a good water drainage system. In case of amphibians, the number of tadpoles captured in UMR was higher than that in FUR. Rana catesbeiana was dominant in FUR and Rana nigromaculata was dominant in UMR. Upon the analysis on the environmental factors that affect the distribution of tadpoles, it was found that Rana catesbeiana tadpoles tend to appear in rice fields, that were flooded in winter, near Yedang reservoir while Rana nigromaculata tadpoles tend to appear near mountains and far from the Yedang reservoir.
