  • Supercritical $CO_2$($scCO_2$) extraction has a great possibility to be a new process to recover metal and to replace the existing leaching/solvent extraction processes. The cobalt extraction was carried out using $scCO_2$ from cobalt sulphate solution. The bis (2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid and diethylamine ligands were used to extract cobalt ion in $scCO_2$. The recommended method consists of $scCO_2$/extractants complexation process and metal extraction process at 60, 200bar. Experimental results showed that the extraction efficiency of Co was increased by 16-99% with increasing the ligand amount.

  • This study was undertaken to compare the histopathological effects of the fractionated doses of 2,400, 4,800 and 7,200 rads of Cobalt-60 irradiation on the teeth of the sixty eight rats (Wester strain), weighing approximately 130gm. They were devided into four groups; no irradiation as a control (Group I) and others (Group II, III, and IV) which received different doses of radiation using 1.25 Mev RAC-120 Cobalt-60 Teletherapy Unit with exposure dose rate 69 rads/min, TSD 80cm. Experimental animals received 600 rads every three days until the total dosage of their groups were reached. Experimental animals were sacrified at the 1st day, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th week irradiation. The following histopathologic findings were obtained: 1. The Group II, received 2,400 rads, showed no histopamologic changes essentially same as those of the control Group. 2. In the Groups III and IV, received 4,800 rads and 7,200 rads, disarray of the normal palasading arrangement of the odontoblastic cells, vacuolar degeneration in the odontoblastic layer, osteodentin and dentinal niches in the anterior teeth were observed. 3. There were no distinct changes in the posterior teeth in the Groups III and IV. 4. The ameloblast cells seemed to be less sensitive to radiation damage than the odontoblast cells.

  • New coordination polymers of general form, $$[CoL_2X_2]_n$$ (L = 3,3'-oxybis(pyridine) (obp), 1,4-bis(3-pyri-doxy) benzene (bpob); X = Cl, NCS), have been prepared via a slow diffusion method. The reaction of the present linkers with cobalt(II) ion affords infinite 2-dimensional sheet products. For $[Co(obp) $_2Cl_2]_n$$, the local geometry of the cobalt center is an octahedral arrangement with four nitrogen donors and two chlorine ions in trans positions. $$[Co(bpob)_2(NCS)_2]_n$$ has provided a similar structure: the local geometry of the cobalt atom is an octahedral arrangement with four pyridine units and two NCS groups in transpositions. The obp and bpob linkers connect two cobalt(II) ions defining the edges of 40- and 60-membered $[Co(II)]_4$ ring, respectively. Thermal analyses of the coordination polymers show significant thermal behavior associated with the characteristic structures.

  • Gate length, height, and silicide thickness have all been shrinking linearly as device density has progressively increased over the years. We investigated the effect of the cobalt diffusion during the silicide formation process on the 60$\AA$-thick gate oxide lying underneath the Ti/Co and Co/Ti bilayers. We prepared four different cobalt silicides, which have similar sheet resistance, made from the film structure of Co/Ti(interlayer), and Ti(capping layer)/Co, and peformed the current-voltage, time-to-break down, and capacitance-voltage measurements. Our result revealed that the cobalt silicide process without the Ti capping layer allowed cobalt atoms to diffuse into the upper interface of gate oxides. We propose that 100$\AA$-thick titanium interlayer may lessen the diffusion of cobalt to gate oxides in 1500-$\AA$ height polysilicon gates.

  • Black cobalt solar selective coatings were prepared by using an electroplating method. The changes in the optical properties of the black cobalt selective coating due to thermal degradation were analyzed by using the Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and spectrophotometer. The black cobalt selective coating was prepared on a copper substrate by using a synthesized electrolyte with $CoCl_2$ and KSCN at a current density of ${\sim}0.5A/dm^2$ for 45s ~ 60s. Its optical properties were a solar absorptance (${\alpha}$) of the order of 0.80 ~ 0.84 and a thermal emittance (${\epsilon}$) of 0.01. From the AES depth profile analysis of heated sample, thermal degradation of the black cobalt selective coating heated for 33 hours at temperature of $350^{\circ}C$ occurred primarily due to interdiffusion at interface of cobalt and copper substrate. This results were predictable that the ${\alpha}$ decreases due to the thermal oxidation and diffusion.

  • Irradiation is frequently employed as the sole therapy for oral cancer. These irradiated patients presents peculiar and progressive dental problems. But there is only scanty informations concerning specific approaches to endodontic treatment for head and neck cancer patients who have been subjected to tumorcidal doses of radiation therapy. The purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of cobalt-60 radiation on the pulpal healing of dogs after the direct pulp capping. As the experimental animals, 10 dogs (above 7-8 months after birth) were divided into 3 groups (Control, Group I, Group II). The cobalt-60 was irradiated to the Group I and Group II each 1,009 and 1,562.5 rads as single dose. As the capping material Dycal$^{(R)}$(L.D. Caulk company) was selected. After the direct pulp capping the dogs were sacrified 1, 2, 3, 4, week interval and made the original slides cut with a thickness of 8 microns and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. After examination and comparision of all specimen, the results of this study were drawn as follows; 1. The formation of reparative dentin was observed from the 1st week in the Control group, the 2nd week in the Group I & II. The few and irregular tuble structure was appeared in the 4th week in the Control group only, but failed in the Group I & II. 2. The continuity of dentin bridge was appeared in the 3rd week in all group and the degeneration of odontoblast in the 1st week of the Group II. 3. The congestion and hemorrhage in the pulp tissue were observed in all groups until 3rd week. The inflammation was appeared within the 2nd week in the Group I and especially marked in the Group II, but absent in the Control group. 4. In cases Dycal into the pulp tissue deeply, the local necrosis of pulp and decrease of dentin formation was observed.

  • This study was undertaken to observe the histopathologic changes in salivary gland of the white rats when exposed to megavoltage fractionated dose of cobalt-60 irradiation and 78 female white rats, weighing approximately 180gm, were divided into control and 3 experimental groups. Irradiation on experimental groups was delivered by using 6000 curies MeV ALCYON cobalt-60 teletherapy unit with exposure rate 183 rads per minute, in source skin distance 80cm, 600 rads every 3 days. In experimental groups, Group Ⅰwas irradiated of total dose 1200 rads for a period of 6 days, Group Ⅱ was irradiated of total dose 2400 rads for a period of 12 days and Group Ⅲ was irradiated of total dose of 4800 rads for a period of 24 days. The animals were sacrificed serially at 3 hours, 6 hours, 10 hours, 1st day, 4th day, 7th day after each completion of irradiation exposure. At sacrifice, salivary glands were excised and examined microscopically and electromicroscopically. The results were as follows: 1. The acinar cells of parotid and submaxillary gland showed damage varied with dose, 1200 rads resulted in very mild injury while 4800 rads caused most extensive injury. 2. The acinar cells of parotid and submandibular gland showed similar ultrastructural alterations, appeared as pleomorphic nucleus, decreased numbers and pleomorphism of secretory granules, distention of rough endplasmic reticulum, expansion and pallor appearance of mitochondria, and hypertrophy of Golgi complex. 3. Parotid serous cells were the most sensitive components, displaying morphological alterations of radiation damage as early as 3 hours, followed by submandibular seromucinous cells and secretory tubular cells. 4. The mucous cells of sublingual gland, as well as the whole ductal lining cells of each salivary gland, displayed no significant alterations. No evidence of microvascular injury through whole experimental groups indicated that microvascular impairment does not contribute to early salivary gland injury.
