  • The methods to separate and remove copper in the mixed solution ((399 ppm Cu, 208 ppm Fe, 15.3 g/L Ni, 2.1 g/L Co) with nickel, cobalt and iron were investigated. With hydroxide precipitation method, copper and iron ions were completely precipitated and removed from the solution at pH 7 while some nickel and cobalt also were precipitated. 99.75% copper could be precipitated and removed as copper sulfide from the solution with adding $Na_2S$ (1.25 w/v concentration) of 2 times equivalent of Cu at pH 1. Copper was selectively absorbed on TP 207 ion exchange resin at equilibrium pH 2.0 and could be eluted from copper-loaded resin using 5% $H_2SO_4$.

  • Induced polarization (IP) was first published in a Korean academic journal in 1973, and it was soon applied to coal and metal ore exploration. Then, in universities and research institutes, IP modeling studies using the finite element approach and experimental studies on IP responses for artificial samples were conducted. In the mid-1980s, the spectral IP (SIP) measurement module was introduced to Korea, and physical scale modeling and inversion approaches were developed. Due to the decline of the mineral resource industry, this method was not actively applied. However, the SIP method was not applied In the 1990s, IP exploration was applied in the investigation of hydrothermal deposits of sulfide minerals and bentonite mineralization zones, as well as to areas where the groundwater was contaminated by intruding seawater. In the 2000s, three-dimensional inversion of the IP approach was developed, and high-precision geophysical exploration was required to secure domestic and overseas mineral resources, so SIP experiments on rock samples and approaches for field exploration were developed. The SIP approach was proven useful for the exploration of metal deposits containing sulfide minerals by applying it to explore the mineralization zone of gold-silver deposits in the Haenam region. The IP method is considered to be effective in exploring critical minerals (lithium, cobalt, and nickel) in high-tech industries. It also is expected to be useful for environmental and geotechnical investigations.

  • The design and fabrication of catalysts with low-cost and high electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) have remained challenging because of the sluggish kinetics of this reaction. The key to the pursuit of efficient electrocatalysts is to design them with high surface area and more active sites. In this work, we have successfully synthesized a highly stable and active NiCo2S4 nanowire array on a Ni-foam substrate (NiCo2S4 NW/NF) via a two-step hydrothermal synthesis approach. This NiCo2S4 NW/NF exhibits overpotential as low as 275 mV, delivering a current density of 20 mA cm-2 (versus reversible hydrogen electrode) with a low Tafel slope of 89 mV dec-1 and superior long-term stability for 20 h in 1 M KOH electrolyte. The outstanding performance is ascribed to the inherent activity of the binder-free deposited, vertically aligned nanowire structure, which provides a large number of electrochemically active surface sites, accelerating electron transfer, and simultaneously enhancing the diffusion of electrolyte.

  • Mineralogical characteristics of Cu-Co ores from the Central African Copperbelt in the Democratic Repblic of Congo are studied using powder X-ray diffractometer, general area detector X-ray diffractometer, and electron proble microanalyzer. Black ores are mainly composed of heterogenite (cobalt oxide/hydroxide mineral) and malachite (copper carbonate mineral), whereas green ores are only composed of malachite. Heterogenite shows very bright white color under the reflected microscope, and belongs to 3R polytype, because it has d-spacings at $4.39{\AA}$ and $2.316{\AA}$. Since NiO and $Fe_20_3$ content of heterogenite are lower than those of 3R polytype from other localities, it cannot completely exclude the presence of 2H polytype in heterogenite from this study. Malachite is light grey color under the reflected microscope with approximate chemical formula of $Cu_{1.97}Co_{0.02}Fe^{2+}{_{0.01}}CO_3(OH)_2$. Heterogenite and malachite were probably formed at the supergene emichment stage, the last mineralization stage in the Central African Copperbelt. Cobalt seems to be much more emiched in the black supergene (oxy)hydroxide ore than those in the primary sulfide ore.

  • $Co_9S_8/reduced$ graphene (CSRG) has been prepared by a facile two step hydrothermal method and used as a supercapacitor electrode material. It is anticipated that the $Co_9S_8$ and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) would serve as a spacer material to each other to stop the agglomeration and simultaneous contribution of electrical double layer capacitance (RGO) and pseudocapacitance ($Co_9S_8$) would provide high electrochemical properties. The chemical analysis has been done by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and the morphology is characterised by field emission scanning electron microscopy. CSRG shows a high electrical conductivity of $98S\;m^{-1}$. The symmetric supercapacitor shows a specific capacitance of ${\sim}728F\;g^{-1}$ with a current density of $2A\;g^{-1}$. CSRG also showed an energy density of $25.2Wh\;kg^{-1}$ with a power density of $1000W\;kg^{-1}$.

  • Transition metal chalcogenides are promising cathode materials for next-generation battery systems, particularly sodium-ion batteries. Ni3Co6S8-pitch-derived carbon composite microspheres with a yolk-shell structure (Ni3Co6S8@C-YS) were synthesized through a three-step process: spray pyrolysis, pitch coating, and post-heat treatment process. Ni3Co6S8@C-YS exhibited an impressive reversible capacity of 525.2 mA h g-1 at a current density of 0.5 A g-1 over 50 cycles when employed as an anode material for sodium-ion batteries. However, Ni3Co6S8 yolk shell nanopowder (Ni3Co6S8-YS) without pitch-derived carbon demonstrated a continuous decrease in capacity during charging and discharging. The superior sodium-ion storage properties of Ni3Co6S8@C-YS were attributed to the pitch-derived carbon, which effectively adjusted the size and distribution of nanocrystals. The carbon-coated yolk-shell microspheres proposed here hold potential for various metal chalcogenide compounds and can be applied to various fields, including the energy storage field.

  • As environmental criteria items are increased or strengthened, cases of heavy metal contamination by geogenic origin are increasing, and the need to distinguish between natural and anthropogenic origins in soil or groundwater exceeding the standard is increasing. In this study, geochemical occurrences of geogenic heavy metals were identified through statistical processing of the national geochemical map data and evaluation of geochemical characteristics of regions with high geoaccumulation indices. Cobalt, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, V, and Zn were targeted for which the national geochemical maps were prepared, and Co, Cr, Ni, and V derived from ultrabasic or ultramafic rocks were classified as factor 1. Copper, Pb and Zn of non-ferrous sulfide origin were classified as factor 2. In particular, enrichment of heavy metals by factor 1 occurs mainly in the serpentine distribution areas of the Chungcheong region, and there is a risk of contamination in neighboring areas. In the case of factor 2, geogenic occurrence is concerned not only in non-ferrous metal mineralization areas such as Taebacksan and Gyeongnam mineralization zones, but also in Au-Ag mineralization areas distributed nationwide.
