  • The radiation characteristics of leaky wave emanated from finite strip-grating loaded dielectric coated coaxial waveguide with finite periodic thick slots are investigated theoretically. The rigorous integral equations are derived for the proposed structure using the courier transform, mode expansion, and sine series expansion of the electric current on metallic strips, and the simultaneous linear equations are obtained. The effects of finite strip-grating loading on a dielectric-coated coaxial waveguide with finite periodic thick slots are examined in terms of radiation characteristics.

  • Characteristics of sprays injected by gas/liquid coaxial atomizers operated at atmospheric pressure are studied using shadowgraph, mechanical patternator and PDPA. The gas-to- liquid momentum flux ratio(M) and the liquid Reynolds number(Re) are selected as key parameters in characteristics of gas/liquid coaxial sprays from the dimensional analysis. The properties of shear coaxial sprays are compared with those of swirl coaxial sprays through the macroscopic and microscopic analysis. Macroscopic similarities between shear and swirl coaxial sprays are revealed under flow conditions of high momentum flux ratio. Also, empirical correlations between the mean drop diameters(D32) and operating conditions of coaxial sprays are proposed in this paper.

  • A Very High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor (VHTR) has been selected as a high energy heat source of the order of $950^{\circ}C$ for nuclear hydrogen generation, which can produce hydrogen from water or natural gas. A primary hot gas duct (HGD) as a coaxial double-tube type cross vessel is a key component connecting a reactor pressure vessel and an intermediate heat exchanger in the VHTR. In this study, a structural sizing methodology for the primary HGD of the VHTR is suggested in order to modulate a flow-induced vibration (FIV). And as an example, a structural sizing of the horizontal HGD with a coaxial double-tube structure was carried out using the suggested method. These activities include a decision of the geometric dimensions, a selection of the material, and an evaluation of the strength of the coaxial double-tube type cross vessel components. Also in order to compare the FIV characteristics of the proposed design cases, a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis was carried out using the ADINA code.

  • A supersonic dual coaxial jet has been employed popularly for various industrial purposes, such as gasdynamic laser, supersonic ejector, noise control and enhancement of mixing. Detailed characteristics of supersonic dual coaxial jets issuing from an inner supersonic nozzle and outer sonic nozzles with various ejection angles are experimentally investigated. Three important parameters, such as pressure ratios of the inner and outer nozzles, and outer nozzle ejection angle, are chosen for a better understanding of jet structures in the present study. The results obtained from the present experimental study show that the Mach disk diameter becomes smaller, and the Mach disk moves toward the nozzle exit, and the length of the first shock cell decreases with the pressure ratio of the outer nozzle. It was also found that the highly underexpanded outer jet produces a new oblique shock wave, which makes jet structure much more complicated. On the other hand the outer jet ejection angle affects the structure of the inner jet structure less than the pressure ratio of the outer nozzle, relatively.

  • This paper deals with a coaxial-to-waveguide transition generating circularly polarized wave to be connected with horn antennas. By combining vertical coaxial fed structure, back-short and the polarization twisting structure, the circular polarization is successfully generated in the waveguide. The designed and implemented transition shows that the present structure can significantly reduce the size of the antenna part at X-band.

  • Measurements of flame length and NOx emissions have been conducted to investigate the effects of acoustic excitation on flame structure in turbulent hydrogen diffusion flames with coaxial air. When the acoustic excitation of a specific frequency is applied to coaxial air stream, flame length is dramatically reduced, resulting in reduction of flame residence time. Consequently, EINOx could decrease up to 35 % and this shows that acoustic excitation is effective in reducing NOx emissions. Mie scattering technique has been used to visualize the vortex structure induced by acoustic excitation and vortex formation, development and destruction were observed quantitatively. As a result, vortex entrains coflow air into fuel stream and mixing rate between fuel and air is significantly enhanced, which may contribute to reduction of NOx emissions.

  • This paper presents the design approach and test results of the Q-band precision subminiature coaxial adaptor based on transmission line theory using multi-step impedance and air-holes to increase its cutoff frequency. In order to increase the frequency performance, the adaptor is designed with hooked structure, fixing step, multi-air-holes, and outer conductor. The return loss increments due to the hooked structure and multi air-holes are minimized to 2 dB and 1.5 dB, respectively. A VSWR(Voltage Standing Wave Ratio) of <1.2 is obtained from DC to 40 GHz, while guaranteeing the durability of the adaptor from room-temperature$(25^{\circ}C)$ to $120^{\circ}C$.

  • This paper described an off-axis head-mounted display system. It is composed of a 7-piece coaxial relay lens group and a freeform surface combiner. This configuration has a simple structure and a wide field of view (FOV). In this design, a freeform surface is chosen as the combiner, to simplify the structure and attain good image quality. We generated this freeform surface by considering both coordinates and normals of discrete data points. Moreover, we realize a coaxial structure in the relay lens group, which is compact and benefits from a loose tolerance requirement. The HMD system we finally realized has a 40° × 30° FOV and 15-mm exit pupil diameter.

  • Many previous works have been performed to provide correlations of flame length, theoretically and experimentally. Most of these results studied were conducted in vertical turbulent flame with no coaxial air condition. The present study analyzes the flame length scaling with coaxial air. In turbulent hydrogen non-premixed jet flames with coaxial air, flame length scaling theoretically proposed so far has been related with the concept of a far-field equivalent source. At high coaxial air to fuel velocity ratio, $U_A/U_F$, however, this scaling theory has some difference with experimental flame length data. This difference is understood to be due to the fact that the theory is based on far-field notion, while the effect of coaxial air on jet flame occurs in the region near the nozzle exit. Therefore, we define effective jet density $P_{eff}$ involving the concept of near-field so that effective jet diameter can be extended to the near-field region. In this condition, we modify the correlation and compare with experimental data.

  • The coaxial magnetic gear with the flux concentrating structure is known that it has the torque performance advantage over the coaxial magnetic gear having surface mounted permanent magnet, thanks to the flux focusing effect. But, if the solid cores are used in the modulating pieces and rotor cores to consider the mechanical reliability and cost reduction, the operating torque of the flux concentrating coaxial magnetic gear can be significantly diminished because the iron losses at the solid cores affect the actual transmitted torque. Furthermore, the modulating pieces and rotor cores have different characteristics of the iron losses from one another, because the space harmonic components of the magnetic flux density, which cause the iron losses, are different. Thus, in this paper, we focused on the analysis of the characteristics of the space harmonic components of the magnetic flux density and resultant eddy current losses in the surface mounted PM and flux concentrating coaxial magnetic gears, when these coaxial magnetic gears have the solid cores at the modulating pieces and rotor cores. The characteristics of pull-out torque (static torque), operating torque (dynamic torque), and efficiency are also researched, and compared by the 3D finite element analysis (FEA) and experiment.
