Optimising Ink Setting Properties on Double Coated Wood-free Papers

  • Today's requirements for print-press runnability and print quality demand an optimised absorption and adhesion of printing ink on the paper surface. Modern coating concepts for high glossing offset grades use ultra fine pigments, whereas binder level has continuously been decreased to a minimum in recent years to achieve the highest possible sheet gloss development and for economical reasons. Both the ultra fine pigments and the reduced binder levels lead in many cases to a faster ink setting rate. On the other hand, matt paper grades use relatively coarse pigments leading to a slow ink setting compared to the high glossing papers. Both too fast and too slow ink setting properties implicate drawbacks in print quality and print press runnability. The mechanisms behind the interactions between ink and coating have been presented in many previous publications. The purpose of this study was to determine and quantify how the ink setting rate is influenced by pigment system (GCC and GCC/clay blends), latex level and latex properties in the topcoat of double coated sheet fed offset paper. The roles of binder level and type in the precoat were also assessed. The effect of calendering (temperature and pressure) was studied with one formulation. The resulting ink setting characteristics were tested using three different laboratory testing instruments. The correlation amongst the different laboratory testing methods is discussed. The results show that by varying the latex properties, the pigment system and/or latex addition level, the ink tack development of ink applied to a topcoat pigment system can be significantly influenced. It can be slowed down as often desired with ultra fine pigments or speeded up in the case of coarse pigments.   • In general, the pearlescent pigment is a pigment which was used for optical characteristics like pearl, rainbow and metallic luster. Titanium dioxide coated mica plate developed by DuPont in 1965 is currently being used as a main part of pearlescent pigment for cosmetics. Although the smooth and clear surface substrate laminated with 2 ~ 3 ingredients is thicker than a previous monolayer coated substrate, it has been applied for cosmetics as the optical interference powder to realize stronger shine and brighter interference color than monolayer one. In this study, we developed a new optical interference powder with thinner and higher chroma than a current pearlescent pigment for the strong luster and bright interference color. It was prepared from the manufacturing process, in which the coated titanium dioxide precursor was changed and crystallized by coating and heat treatment process with a half of dividing the coated amount of titanium dioxide. We confirmed the dense coating of titanium dioxide grain with Scanning Electron Microscope and measured superior crystallization degree compared with a monolayer coated pearlescent pigment by X-ray Diffraction. It is concluded that our new pearlescent pigment had higher reflectivity of light and stronger interference color than previous products.

Print Mottle : Causes and Solutions from Paper Coating Industry Perspective

  • The principal reasons for applying a pigment coating to paper are to improve appearance and printability. The pigment coating provides a surface that is more uniform and more receptive to printing ink than are the uncoated fibers and, in turn, both facilitates the printing process and enhances the graphic reproduction. The improvement in print quality is readily apparent, especially in image areas or when multiple colors are involved. Although pigment coating of paper is to improve the printability, coated paper is not completely free from printing defects. Actually there are a number printing defects that are observed only with the coated papers. Among the printing defects that are commonly observed for coated papers, print mottle during multi-color offset printing is one of the most concerned defects, and it appears not only on solid tone area but also half dot print area. There are four main causes of print mottle ranging from printing inks, dampening solution, paper, and printing press or its operation. These indicates that almost every factors associated with lithographic printing can cause print mottle. Among these variation of paper quality influences most significantly on print mottle problems in multicolor offset printing, and this indicates that paper is most often to be blamed for its product deficiency as far as print mottle problems are concerned. Furthermore, most of the print mottle problems associated with paper is observed when coated papers are printed. Uncoated papers rarely show mottling problems. This indicates that print mottle is the most serious quality problems of coated paper products. Overcoming the print mottle is becoming more difficult because the operating speeds of coating and printing machines are increasing, coating weights are decreasing, and the demands on high-quality printing are increasing. Print mottle in offset printing is caused by (a) nonuniform back trap of ink caused by a nonuniform rate of ink drying, referred as "back trap mottle, and (b) nonuniform absorption of the dampening solution. Furthermore, both forms of print mottle have some relationship to the structure of the coated layer. The surest way of eliminating ink mottling is to eliminate unevenness in the base paper. Coating solutions, often easier to put into practice, should, however, be considered. In this paper the principal factors influencing print mottle of coated papers will be discussed. Especially the importance of base paper roughness, binder migration, even consolidation of coating layers, control of the drying rate, types of binders, etc. will be described.

  • Kaolin has long been used in aqueous coatings to produce high-quality coated paper products. While the kaolin industry hat always focused on innovation. the rate of new product introduction hat never been greater than in the past five-to-eight years due to the cost, quality and other competitive pressure facing papermakers. After summarizing many of the performance benefits offered by the new generation of kaolin-baled pigments. this paper reviews four specific pigment advances: a high-performance. ultrafine glossing pigment; an engineered pigment with a narrow particle size distribution; two products from a kaolin-based pigment family developed for metered size presses ; and a novel class of inkjet pigments.

  • Recently the use of web offset printing has been increasing, which can provide high print speed, mass production, and high print quality. However, high speed web offset printing has frequently undergone a blistering problem when the printed paper passes through hot air dryers. Blistering occurs in the middle of the base paper or in the coating layer. This paper focused on the blistering occurring in the base paper. In order to elucidate the effect of pigment ratio on blistering, 6 types of coating color were prepared with varying GCC/clay ratios and printability and blistering were investigated focusing on structure changes in the coating layer. When the clay content in the coating layer was increased, surface roughness and surface strength were decreased and paper gloss was increased. In addition, it was found that the coating layer structure with high clay content, which contains lots of discontinuous pores, hindered water vapors to penetrate out and, as a result, blistering occurred.

The Characteristics of Coating Layer with the Thermochromic and the Photochromic Pigment (시광안료와 시온안료를 사용한 도공층의 특성)

  • This study was aimed to apply thermochromic and photochromic pigments to coating color and to develop a speciality functional coated layer. Two special pigments were added to a conventional coating color. The effects of the special pigments on coating color properties such as water rerention, low-shear viscosity were evaluated. Also the color changes of coated paper was observed under various circumstances. The results showed that the special pigments didn't influence the coating color properties. The coated paper with the special pigments showed four different colors, under various circumstances, implying that thermochromic and photochromic pigments can be used to produce a security paper.

Development of IR Reflective Cool Pigment and Paint (차열도료용 Cool Pigment 및 Paint 개발)

  • Infrared(IR) reflective black cool pigment and paint which is used for interior/exterior materials(IR reflectance >30%) to prevent heat island effect and to increase energy efficiency were studied. Cool pigment was synthesized using mixture of $Fe_2O_3$ and $Cr_2O_3$ with calcination from 900 to $1,200^{\circ}C$. Cool paint was prepared by formulation of cool pigment, acrylic resins, and other additives. Results showed that optimum color fixation of pigment obtained by mole ratio of Fe to Cr was 0.9 with calcination temperature at $1,000^{\circ}C$. The cool paint formulated by 20% pigment and 1.5% dispersive additive with $125{\mu}m$ thickness of coated layer showed optimum IR reflectance. Temperature difference on surface between cool paint and ordinary paint(STD) was $36.5^{\circ}C$ and IR reflectance(TSR) was 39.3% at wavelength from 700 to 2,500nm. And color change was not detected during 500hrs weathering test.

Anti-Corrosion Characteristics of Steel Structures with Polyaniline Anti-Corrosive Coatings (강 구조물에 대한 폴리아닐린 함유도료의 방청특성)

  • In preparative anti-corrosive coating experiments, polyaniline was obtained by reacting an oxidizing agent with the monomer aniline. Further, the primer coating was prepared using a variety of widely-used materials such as urethane resin. For the top coating, epoxy resin and acrylic urethane resin were used. Characteristics of the coatings were assessed according to KS and ASTM specifications, and the structure of the polyaniline was characterized using FT-IR and TGA. For analysis of anti-corrosive properties in salt-spray experiments, measurements of the oxidation state of iron and surface atomic analysis were conducted using XPS and SEM-EDX. Unlike general anti-corrosive coatings which exhibit anti-corrosive effects only as a primer coating, the anti-corrosive coatings using polyaniline as the anti-corrosive pigment showed a marked synergistic effect with the top coatings. In other words, the top coatings not only produce a fine view effect, but also increase, through interaction with the primer coatings, the resistance to diffusion of corrosive factors from the external environment. It was also found that, unlike the heavy metal oxide-forming layer of the passive barrier alone, the polyaniline anti-corrosive pigment oxidized iron at the interface with the iron substrate to form a passive barrier in the oxidic layer, and itself formed a potential barrier layer with anti-corrosive factors from the external environment. Although the passive layer was damaged, the damaged area did not become completely oxidized iron; on the contrary, it showed a tendency to reduction. This can be interpreted such that a passive layer is formed again on the damaged area, and that at the same time there is a tendency to self-healing.

  • The 2-packaged polyurethane coatings were synthesized, blending pheylmodified polyesters(of which synthetic methods were reported in the previous paper), Desmodur L-75(polyisocyanate wide1y used for coatings), wetting-dispersing agent, white pigment. etc. A variety of coating properties were tested for the coating treatment polyurethane coationgs. Compared with conventional 2-packaged polyure-thane coating, abrasion resistance and lightness index difference of the ones synthesized in the present work were somewhat decreased, but the coating properties such as hardness, gloss specular, cross hatch adhesion. etc. were improved. Especially, resistance against chemical reagents and salt were strikingly improved. In addition. the coationgs had short drying time and long pot-life. This shows that the coationgs are appropriate for rapid drying coatings.

  • To develop paper coating technology for preventing print mottling, which is recognized as the most common printing problems in using coated papers, ink absorption properties of various coated papers were examined by employing K 8T N and Croda ink absorption tests. The influences of pigment compositions, coat weights and drying methods on these ink absorption properties were examined, and then the variations of ink absorption ratio were analyzed and discussed. It is demonstrated that the variation of Croda ink absorption ratio induced by coat weight variation can be utilized most succesfully to predict print mottling propensity of coating formulations. A systematic analysis approach was suggested that can be employed in the development of the most desirable coating color formulation to achieve target optical properties with the least print mottling.
