Roughing of tool steel in its hardened state represents a real challenge in the die and meld industry and process improvement depends on research of tool material, coating technique, and lubrication. However, roughing of hardened steels generates extreme heat and without coolant flooding, tool material cannot withstand the high temperature without choosing the right tools with proper coating. This research conducted milling tests using coated ball end mills to study effects of cutting conditions and geometric parameters of ball end mills on the machinability of hardened tool steel. KP4 steel and STD 11 heat treated steels were used in the dry cutting as the workpiece and TiAIN coated ball end mills with side relief angle of 12$^{\circ}$ was utilized in the cutting tests. Cutting forces, tool wear, and surface roughness were measured in the cutting tests. Results from the experiments showed that 85 m/min of cutting speed and 0.32 mm/rev of feed rate were optimum conditions for better surface finish during rough cutting and 0.26mm/rev with the same cutting speed are optimum conditions in the finish cutting.
Non-ferrous metals, widely used in the mechanical industry, are difficult to machine, particularly by drilling and tapping. Since non-ferrous metals have a strong tendency to adhere to the cutting tool, the tool life is greatly deteriorated. Diamond-like carbon (DLC) is one of the promising candidates to improve the performance and life of cutting tool due to their low frictional property. In this study, a sacrificial DLC layer is applied on the hard nitride coated drill tool to improve the durability. The DLC coatings are fabricated by controlling the acceleration voltage of the linear ion source in the range of 0.6~1.8 kV. As a result, the optimized hardness(20 GPa) and wear resistance(1.4 x 10-8 ㎣/N·m) were obtained at the 1.4 kV. Then, the optimized DLC coating is applied as an sacrificial layer on the hard nitride coating to evaluate the performance and life of cutting tool. The Vickers hardness of the composite coatings were similar to those of the nitride coatings (AlCrN, AlTiSiN), but the friction coefficients were significantly reduced to 0.13 compared to 0.63 of nitride coatings. The drilling test were performed on S55C plate using a drilling machine at rotation speed of 2,500 rpm and penetration rate of 0.25 m/rev. The result showed that the wear width of the composite coated drills were 200 % lower than those of the AlCrN, AlTiSiN coated drills. In addition, the cutting forces of the composite coated drills were 13 and 15 % lower than that of AlCrN, AlTiSiN coated drills, respectively, as it reduced the aluminum clogging. Finally, the application of the DLC sacrificial layer prevents initial chipping through its low friction property and improves drilling quality with efficient chip removal.
Ceramic, PCD and CBN tools are available for the difficult-to-cut-materials such as hardened carbon tool steel, stainless steel, Inconel 718 and etc. Ceramic tools are likely to be chipped and abruptly broken before the appearance of normal wear in turning. Ceramic tools are suitable for continuous in turning, not for intermittent in milling. In this study, TiN/TiCN multi-layer coated ceramic tools were found to restrain the chipping, breaking and early fracture and to increase the critical cutting speed owing to TiN/TiCN multi-layer coating in Arc Ion Plating of PVD method.
This study presents the optimal hardness range for a coated layer of a workpiece when the diamond tool cuts the corner-cube pattern on the coated plates using an ultra-precision diamond-turning machine. Two kinds of coated plates, which have the hardness range of 211~328 Vickers hardness, are used on the first experiments. The form accuracy for the corner-cube pattern could be achieved through the following experiments using the accumulated thin copper plates in second experiments, having optimal 265~275 Vickers hardness based on the basic first experiments without tool wear. When the number of machining adjustments was increased to seven times, having machining depth was reduced successively in second experiment, a fine surface could be achieved without tool wear.

In this research, we examine the change of dimensional accuracy in the cutting process while changing cutting conditions such as feed rate and spindle rotational speed with chromium molybdenum steel (SCM415) material and TiCN- and TiAlN-coated end mill tools. According to dimensional accuracy measurement, TiCN-coated tool displays the most accurate dimensional tolerance at ${\varnothing}20mm$ at feed rates of 200 mm/min and 250 mm/min at a spindle rotation speed of 4,000 rpm. The largest dimension of the coating tool was able to make the TiAlN-coated tool suitable when comparing the smallest dimension.
The experimental investigation is mainly focused to detect tool wear by cutting signal measurements in multi-insert face milling SS 41 and STS 304. This research have investigated the effects on the insert number, which has relationship with mean-cutting force. AE(acoustic emission) signal, tool life and surface roughness in machining SS41 and STS 304. The cutting force and AE signal are monitored to analyse the cutting process, The surface roughness of the specimens machined by TiN coated tool with the various insert numbers measured at various cutting speeds, feed rates and depths of cut, The width of flank wear is also observed.
In the machining of glass fiber reinforced plastics(GFRP), turning has been often used. But the most of past studies have been interested in the effect of fiber orientation on tool wear. In this study, the effects of fiber contents and cutting speeds on tool wear, cutting force and surface roughness are investigated experimentally. By proper selection of cutting tool, the variables are cutting speed, fiber contents and cutting length with fixed feed rate and depth of cut. The fiber contents have major effects on coated tool wear which observed as abrasive wear type.
As the machine tool industry progresses, the performance of cutting tools also needs to be of good quality and specialized. If the existing metal cutting tool tip is coated properly, its life would be longer and the machining of a difficult-to-cut material also could be possible. For the development of the high quality cutting tool, the applicabilities of TiAIN coating deposited by PVD on the cutting insert were experimentally investigated. The various measurements, such as, SEM micrograph, XRD pattern, AFM surface morphology, and hardness were performed to cross-check the possibility and availability of TiAIN coated tool in the field. The effects of it is successful and we hope to see good results in many fields.
The corrosion resistance of epoxy-coated carbon steel was evaluated. The carbon steel surface was subjected to different treatment methods such as steel grit blasting and power tool treatment as well as contamination of water soluble salt. To study the effect of the surface treatments and contamination, the topology of the treated surface was observed by confocal microscopy and a pull-off adhesion test was conducted. The corrosion resistance of the epoxy-coated carbon steel was further examined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) combined with immersion test of 3.5 wt% of NaCl solution. Consequently, the surface contamination by sodium chloride with $16mg/m^2$, $48mg/m^2$ and $96mg/m^2$ didn't affect the adhesion strength for current epoxy coated carbon steel and blister and rust were not observed on the surface of epoxy coating contaminated by various concentration of sodium chloride after 20 weeks of immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl aqueous solutions. In addition, the results of EIS test showed that the epoxy-coated carbon steel treated with steel grit blasting and power tool showed similar corrosion protection performance and surface cleanness such as Sa 3 and Sa 2.5 didn't affect the corrosion protectiveness of epoxy coated carbon steel.
