The composition of water-friendly space in the port and harbour developments provides the accessibility to the sea and thus resting & recreational function of the local citizen, which should be treated importantly for the eco-friendly coastal development. However, the high demand on water-friendly space can induce another environmental problem because most port and harbour developments require marine reclamation and the water-friendly space are made up on the reclamation area. The present study analysed the problems and suggested matters to be considered in composing the water-friendly space of port and harbour developments. The study also established the management direction by site characteristics of port and harbour. In addition, we attempt to find a plan to avoid the water-friendly space composition with environmental damage and to secure the environmental and public soundness in site selection, land use and facilities plan based on case studies.
This paper examined the impacts of the regional developments and dwellers behavior on the Seacoast. Seacoast features a variety of landforms which are created by the action of waves and tidal flows. The coastal landforms are found mainly in the interface between land and sea. Although erosional landforms constitute prominent landscape features as sea stack, sea arch, and rock cliff do, it is nonetheless the depositional features such as beaches, tidal flats, offshore bars, deltas, sanddunes, and coastal plains that have various ramifications for human communities. Among these, beaches and coastal sanddunes are special in that their formation is attributable to the combined action of waves, tidal flows, and winds. The main line of discussion in this dissertation is concerned with the transformation of group of beaches sanddunes along the coastline of Chungcheong-Namdo Province. To some extent, the erosion of coastal dunes has been a global phenomenon. The degradation process occurs most actively when the spring tides attack beaches, berms, and foredunes. Also involved in the transformation of coastal dunes are factors of human agency. The extent, speed, and pattern of their morphological changes are a function of land-use pattern. The reclamation of swale and the exploitation of sands as construction material and silica sand, for example, ruin the feature of coastal dunes.
This study presents an investigation of the changes of the currents in Kwangyang Bay due to the construction of harbor, reclamation and coastal developments. Currents were simulated by the numerical experiments with a diagnostic multi-level model and using the seasonal oceanographic data of temperature, salinity and ocean current. The values of kinetic and potential energies for the currents were calculated in cases of three topographical changes; before coastal developments, the existing state and after completion of the development project in Kwangyang Bay. The changes of currents due to the coastal developments are as follow; Kinetic energies of tide induced residual currents and wind driven currents decreased by 35~40 percent and 5 percent respectively, however those of density currents increased by 10 percent since the decrease of the coastal areas. Kinetic energy of residual currents including tide induced residual currents, density currents and wind driven currents reduced by 10 percent compared with before the coastal developments. Decrease of current velocity was greatest in summer. Therefore, in summer it was assumed that the Kwangyang Bay is more easily polluted by stratification and decrease of residual current than before the coastal developments carried out.

The necessary of predicting changes in tidal regime that would caused by large coastal engineering developments has been led to increased numerical modeling of tides on the continental shelf since 1970s (Flather, 1976; Choi, 1978; Greenberg, 1979). (omitted)

Quantification of sediment losses into the ambient waters associated with various works of coastal developments is highly required for predicting their possible detrimental impacts on the aquatic environments. Although there have been some studies especially related to dredging (e.g., Nakai, 1978; Kirby and Land, 1991; Collins, 1995; Pennekamp et al., 1996; Lorenz, 1999; Jin et al.,2003), none can be regarded as a general guidance up to date, which results from the facts that the amount of sediments released into the ambient waters is influenced by several site/case-specific conditions, and that the existing studies have been carried out using different methods. The distributions of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and suspended solid (SS) in Ulsan Bay were simulated and reproduced by a numerical ecosystem model for the practical application to the management of marine water quality and the prediction of water quality change due to coastal developments or the constructions of breakwater and marine facilities. Comparing the computed with the observed data of COD and SS in Ulsan bay the results of simulation were found to be good enough to satisfy the practical applications.
Coastal development works generally increase the suspended sediment concentration of the ambient water, causing environmental impacts in various manners. The most active measures in three sides have been reviewed for their applicabilities in Korea. Referring to the cases in the USA, the legislation of environmental windows seems to be not proper for Environmentally Sound and Sustainable Developments (ESSD) until sufficient scientific data are obtained to address the individual issues of potential negative impacts. Feedback monitoring can be regarded as the best way for ESSD. Korea also has the basic legal system for the feedback monitoring as well as Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA). However, the frequency, period and parameter of related surveys should be improved for the true ESSD. Moreover, environmental facilities such as environmental dredgers should be widely used for mitigating environmental Impacts caused by coastal development works.
This paper describes the backgrounds, motivations and recent history of structural health monitoring (SHM) developments to various types of engineering structures. Extensive applications of SHM technologies in bridges, high-rise buildings, sport avenues, offshore platforms, underground structures, dams, etc. in mainland China are summarily categorized and listed in tables. Sensors used in implementations, their deployment, damage identification strategies if applicable, preliminary monitoring achievements and experience are presented in the lists. Finally, existing problems and promising research efforts in civil SHM are discussed, highlighting challenges and future trends.
The 1982 UNCLOS provided very detailed provisions on marine scientific research and gave coastal stale jurisdiction to regulate marine scientific research in its EEZ. However, due to lack of definition and criteria of MSR, there are some different views, even conflicts, regarding legal Pounds for governing hydrographic surveys and oceanographic data collection by one state in the EEZs of other states. Some coastal states argue that those activities should only be conducted in the EEZ of other states with the consent of the coastal state while it is the opinion of other states, including the U.S.A., that those activities can be conducted freely in the EEZ. This paper reviews different views and recent developments on the issue and suggests some recommendations for future work of the Korean government related to the activities.
