The changes of tidal characteristics of Kyonggi-Bay Region after the Large Reclamations in the Inchon Coastal Area have been studied by the numerical modelling. The constructions of Inchon International Airport and Sihwa Seadike were considered as the main reclaimation projects in this region. A two dimensional hydrodynamic model was used for this study, and it was composed in relatively high resolution with curvilinear orthogonal coordinate. As the results, at the Inchon harbor and Palmido, where a deep channel is developed, the semi tidal ranges(Z$_0$) were decreased in 8 cm after the two reclamations. However, the Z$_0$ values in the outside of the deep channel were decreased only in 2~4 cm, so that the tidal changes in the deep channel were greater than in the outside of it. After the reclamations, the maxmum velocity was increased 17% at the Inchon harbor, however it was decreased from 1. 55 m/s to 1.10 m/s at the Palmido. This is because the available area in which the stream may spread out was largely reduced after the reclamations. An Asan-bay region, the Z$_0$ was decreased in 5 cm at the Punyang-man and Asan-man stations located after the reclamations in Inchon coastal area. However the changes of Z$_0$ were very little at the outside of Asan-bay. In Asan-bay, the current velocity and direction were little influenced by the reclamations in Inchon coastal area.

In coastal area of Inchon, dredging and the disposal of dredged material for sea-wall construction and reclamation have increased in recent years. These activities may impact the benthic environment and result in changes in benthic communities, but little information is available on the extent and direction of these changes. We investigated whether there have been changes in the dominant macrobenthic species and benthic community over the last decade, and explored the relationship between environmental variables and spatial patterns of macrobenthic community structure. We sampled macrobenthos and recorded environmental variables in the coastal habitats of Inchon in March and June 2004. In total, 212 macrobenthic species were recorded during this study, predominately crustaceans $(34{\%})$, mollusks $(32{\%})$ and polychaetes $(21{\%})$. The mean density of macrobenthos was $1,393\;ind./m^{2}$.The most abundant species was Amphioplus japonicus $(20.5{\%})$, followed by Heteromastus filiformis $(14.4{\%})$, Theora fragilis $(8.2{\%})$ and Ampharete sp. $(4.0{\%})$. Over the past decade the dominant macrobenthic species in this area shifted. Multivariate analysis (multidimensional scaling) revealed significant differences in community structure among three regions: the middle part of the sampling area (B), site 8 (C) and other sites (A). Mean density varied significantly among the three regions, but no differences in the number of species and diversity (H') were observed. The distribution of the macrobenthic community was affected by environmental variables such as percentage sand content and sediment kurtosis. Species that were important in different areas included A. japonicus in region A, Raeta puchella in region B and T. fragilis in region C. The important species in regions B and C were filter-feeding bivalves, and the abundance of these species may be related to the increase in percentage sand content. We suggest that the sediment composition (percentage sand content) may be an important factor in determining the dominant species and structure of the macrobenthic communities in coastal Inchon. Long-term monitoring programs are necessary to understand ongoing changes in the benthic communities of this area.
A two-dimensional non-linear tidal model has been established to calculate the M$\_$2/ tide of Inchon Bay in the west coast of Korea. Cartesian coordinates are used for the derivation of the governing equations and account is taken of extensive drying boundaries (tidal flats) which are exposed at low tides. The tidal amplitudes and phases computed from the model agree well with those known from observation lying within bounds 5cm in amplitude and 5 in phase relative to the observed results. The work represents a further stage in the development including extensive sea measurements capable of application in various coastal engineering problems encountered in Inchon Bay area.
In order to select an effective and appropriate evaluation method for the marine environmental protection and management, it is necessary to evaluate the present status of environmental conditions and to monitor and regulate the harzadous waste continuously. Among the evaluation methods that use benthic fauna, some graphical methods and biological index methods such as species abundance-biomass (SAB), Rank-frequency diagram (RFD), Abundance-Biomass comparison (ABC), log-normal distribution (LND), and Benthic Pollution Index (BPI) modified by Infaunal Trophic Index were used for the assessments of marine environment in the Inchon coastal area. Even though the graphic methods are convenient for easy glimpse of general trend of environmental condition but because they require sufficient ecological data, those methods do not fit for analysis or comparison of regional and detailed environmental condition. On the other hand, when BPI was applied, it was able to compare the spatial benthic conditions. Through considering the functional aspects of benthic fauna which can not be obtained in the cluster analysis, BPI was made it possible to measure or trace down the source of pollution. In the case of the environmental assessment result analyzed in Inchon coastal area, the north eastern part of Yongjongdo was more influenced by the pollution than the outer area of Inchon. The research indicates that especially Inchon harbor has been greatly affected.
Currently serious conflicts of interests are arisen for the use of coastal area in Korea. However, there no mediation program, mediators' consistent policies and reasonable laws to resolve conflict of interests which may be arisen when developing coastal area. The objective of this study is to lay the evaluation criteria for the formalized objective evaluation among disputants of coastal conflicts for the better understanding and characterizing of coastal conflicts in Korea. In order to do so, this study has adopted for the extraction of the evaluation factors to describe the present conditions of conflicts in the selected study area(Sihwa lake), to analyze the problems, and then to explore alternative approaches for resolving the conflicts. As research methodologies, we have depended upon literature review and field survey methods. As field survey methods, we employed structured questionnaires for the various samples from the experts of research institutes, professors, representatives of NGOs and citizens. Survey results suggested that 5 representative elements comprising 35 detailed elements could be identified. Based on these results, this study was able to identify and classify the evaluation factors and help to resolve coastal conflicts in Korea.

Many Countries have made efforts to assist ships navigate accurately , safely and expeditiously for the safety control against increasing marine traffic , in their coastal waters. However, they are exposed in spite of these efforts,to risks of casulaties and marine polluation caused by traffic congestion when ships are navigating through waterways approaches to ports or harbors and in narrow fairways. Therefore, efficient control of VTS in Port is necessary nowadays to provide ships with necessary service , which interacts with shipping and organize the flow of traffic so as to maximize the efficiency of the port or harbor while minimizing the risk of accident and environmental pollution. Even though the navigation condition of ships is very inferior compared to other ports in Korea, such as the big difference between the ebb and flood tide, the frequent fog, the narrow fairway , the density of navigation traffic in Inchon Port is high and transportation quantity of dangerous cargoe increases gradually. In cosideration of the characteristics of natural circumstance and traffic circumstance the VTS established newly in Inchon port have to operate efficiently. The purpose of this study is to help efficient operation of VTS in Inchon port by accomplishing both the literature research and questionnaire survey. Questionnaire survey was read to the VTS personnel in Inchon Port and customer familiar to Inchon Port such as ship navigators, pilots, shipping companies and so on. Most of ship navigators who occupy half of the respondents are Korean Officer who had responded while they were calling at Inchon port. The conclusions and recommendations includes ; First, the service area should be extended over Designated area to provide the vessel with navigational assistance service regarding the information of traffic congestion area, fishing boat and small ship's activities. Second, the types of information service to be offered are ship's movement and weather condition inthe vicinity of the port and state of fairway in the approaching channel to thte fairway. Third, VTS personnel should be upgraded by the on-the-job training and continuous simulation training as well as supplement of the qualified personnel for VTS operation. Fourth , the Harbor Master System to be introduced for safe navigation and efficient port operation.
To clarify the role of protozooplankton in the microbial food web of Inchon coastal ecosystem, the grazing capacities and growth rates of heterotrophic flagellated (HFL) and ciliates were investigated. We measured the growth rates of bacteria, HFL, autotrophic flagellated (AFL) and ciliates using reverse flow (RF) filter set and obtained the clearance rates and ingestion rates of HFL and dilates by fluorescent labelled bacteria (FLB) method and isolation culture method from natural seawater of Inchon coastal area. The standing crops of bacteria, HFL, AFL and ciliates in this study area were 0.7∼1.5${\times}$10/SUP 6/ cells$.$ml/SUP -1/ 1,680∼2,180 cells$.$ml/SUP -1/, 1,090∼2,180 cells$.$ml, and 3,600∼5,700 cells$.$l/SUP -1/, respectively. The mean growth rates of bacteria, HFL, AFL and ciliates were 0.039 h/SUP -1/, 0.032∼0.033h/SUP -1/, 0.015∼ 0.025h/SUP -1/and 0.021h/SUP -1/, respectively. The growth rates of protozooplankton of Inchon coastal waters were relatively low. Mean grazing rate of HFL, AFL and ciliates were0.039 h/SUP -1/, 0.032∼0.033h/SUP -1/,0.015∼ 0.025h/SUP -1/and 0.021h/SUP -1/, respectively. The growth rates of protozooplankton of Inchon coastal waters were relatively low. Mean grazing rate of HFL on bacteria was 0.055h/SUP -1/. Mean grazing rates of ciliates on HFL was relatively high of 0.057 h/SUP -1/, while the grazing rate of ciliates on AFL was low of 0.019h/SUP -1/. The clearance rates and ingestion rates of HFL on bacteria were 3.6∼61.8nl$.$HFL$.$h/SUP -1/ and 6∼52 BAC. HFL$.$h/SUP -1/ respectively. FLB grazing experiment showed low values, while natural bacteria experiment showed high value meaning high grazing pressure on total bacteria. The clearance rates and ingestion rates of Tintinnopsis sp., dominant ciliates in Inchon coastal waters, were 3.2∼4.6 ul$.$CIL/SUP -1/$.$h/SUP -1/ and 5∼6 cells$.$CIL/SUP -1/$.$h/SUP -1/ respectively, showing higher values in the high tide than low tide. The ingestion rates of ciliates implies that ciliate took up 17∼20% of total nanoflagellates of Inchon coastal waters.
Marine Casualties cause the loss of hmm lives, properties and marine pollution. The prevention of marine accidents has been a major topic in marine society and various policies and countermeasures have been developed, applied to the industries. The coastal VTS and navigational aids are considered as one of the effective methods to promote marine safety but they need relatively huge amount of budgets to build. Thus prior to establishing these coastal VTS and navigational aids, it should be evaluated the navigational safety level in the coastal waterways in concern. So far as human beings are concerned, there are many types of fuzziness in the evaluation of navigational safety level. In order to reflect these fuzziness on this evaluation, this paper introduces the fuzzy measure and integral to represent the fuzziness in the evaluation process. Therefore this paper aims to develop the method for this evaluation using the fuzzy measure and integral. In this paper, Korean coastal area is divided into 8 sectors and evaluated the priority for the needs of coastal VTS and navigational aids. The results are found as order as Mokpo, Yosu, Pohang, Busan, Inchon, Geoje, Gunsan, Donghae coastal area.
The residue levels of total PCBs in the surface samples were detected low concentration compared to the coastal area in Korea, and the PCBs pattern were very similarly to the arochlor mixture(1016+1232+1248+1260). The selected area divided into three area(Kanghwa:A, Yellow:B and Jangdo:C) by depending on the chlorine ratio. The PCBs were mainly detected dichlorinated and trichlorinated biphenyls in far sea, and heptachlorinated and octachlorinated biphenyls in the near the Incheon coastal area. The residue levels of PCBs were detected 0.72${\sim}$9.20 ng/g in the surface samples, 1.60~3.00 ng/g for Kanghwa and 0.34~9.20 ng/g for Jangdo in the core samples, and the PCBs concentration increased from bottom to top.

To understand the role of protozoa in the early formation of microbial fouling community, the studies on the formation of microbial film, the succession of microbial fouling communities, and the grazing pressure on bacteria population in microbial film were carried out in the laboratory, Inchon outer port and Inchon inner harbour. Bacteria and heterotrophic flagellates formed primary microbial film on the aluminum surface within 6 hours and oligotrich ciliates were observed 2 cells $mm^{-2}$ on the same surface at 9 hours in Inchon inner harbour which had physically stagnant condition. The larvaes of Balanus albicostatus which were dominant meiobenthos in Inchon coastal area attached on the glass surface at the first day of experiment. Heterotrophic flagellates showed maximum abundance of 465 cells $mm^{-2}$ at the 13rd day and ciliates showed maximum abundance of 63 cells $mm^{-2}$ at the 11st day in the Inchon inner harbour. In the Inchon outer port which opens to the outer sea, the maximum abundance of protozoa occurred at early phase, but not so many. The dominant heterotrophic flagellates were Metrornonas simplex and Bodonids. Dominant ciliates were small tintinnids and oligotrich ciliate Strombidium sp., Large Strombidium (oligotrich ciliate) and sessile Acineta turberosa (suctorian ciliate) occurred after 10 days. The attached larvae of Balanus occurred as biofouling organism on the early surface and showed maximum abundance of 18 indiv. $cm^{-2}$ at 7th day. At that time, adult barnacles were observed on the surface and dead barnacles were observed after two days. Except barnacles, the larvaes of Anthozoa sp., Oysters (Crassostrea gigas) and Polychaeta were observed on the surface from 3rd day. 3 benthic copepods including Harpacticus sp., I isopod, 1 polychaeta and 1 gastropoda were observed as predators of the microbial film on the surface after 7 days when microbial film developed very well. Although the ingestion rates of protozoa on the bactctia of the rnicrobi31 film were relatively low, the average grazing rate of protozoa on bacteria was high of 0.058 $h^{-1}$. This implied that the grazing pressure of protozoa influences the mortality of bacteria populations on the microbial film. but protozoa cannot get enough energy from only bacteria on the microbial film.
