The studies on the carotenoids in the viscera of abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) have been-carried out. The pigments were extracted with acetone-methanol mixture (4 : 1) from the viscera of abalones which were caught around the coastal water of Korea from March to August. The individual carotenoid in the extracts was separated and purified by the silica gel TLC, $Mg(OH)_2$ impregnated paper chromatography and $Mg_2(OH)_2CO_3$ TLC. The isolated eleven carotenoids were investigated and identified by epoxide test, partition test, reduction with sodium borohydride, alkaline hydrolysis, co-chromatography and comparative test with reference carotenoids and electronic and IR absorption spectrophotometry. ${\alpha}$-Carotene, ${\beta}$-carotene. lutein, zeaxanthin, siponaxanthin, siponein, fucoxanthin, loroxan-thin-like and fucoxanthinol-like have been identified among the eleven carotenoids isolated. It has been found that fucoxanthin, on alkaline treatment, was transformed to the product of which chromophore was the same one as fucochrome and semifucoxanthol. Among the identified nein carotenoids siphonaxanthin, siponein, fucoxanthin, loroxanthin-like and fucoxanthinol-like have not been reported previously to be contained in the shellfish.
The aim of this study is to check the application criteria of the conventional techniques and clarify the effects of breaker depth, seabed conditions on the stability in relation to the effects of uncertainty of storm duration and directional irregular waves. The typical damage modes were divided by the direct wave force on the armor unit and by the local scouring around the toe of a breakwater head by the model experiments. The destruction modes are defined, and some criteria on the damage modes and scouring/deposition at the toe of a breakwater head in relating the wave-bottom-structural conditions can be checked using the multi-directonal irregular wave generator system. According to the results, it is emphasized that the 3-D effects on the stability should be analyzed in the design of multi-purpose/function coastal structures in consideration of the evaluation of spatial variation of damage modes and hydraulic characteristics as well as the wave distribution along the structures.
The distribution patterns of anchovy eggs and larvae and environmental characteristics such as oceanographic conditions and meteorological factors in the eastern part of Jeju Strait, Korea from June to October 2003 were investigated. During the sampling periods, the anchovy spawned on the coastal area mainly and approximately 85% of total egg abundance occurred in only two months, from July to August, suggesting that the main spawning season of anchovies is considered in summer from July and August in the study area. Relatively high proportions of the anchovy larvae larger than 20 mm TL observed in the eastern part area. These facts suggest that anchovy larvae gradually moved out to the eastern part of study area. Most wind speeds were markedly reduced to below 10 m/s with the exception of a few days and the precipitation was concentrated (37%) from July to August when the anchovy eggs and larvae occurred abundantly. Results of correlation analysis showed that the anchovy egg abundance correlated with the increasing chlorophyll a and copepod biomass. It is considered that the plankton biomass in the sea area would have significant effects on the anchovy spawning. In addition, salinity variations also had significant effects on the abundance of anchovy larvae, with increasing water temperature.
The spawning season, growth and feeding habit of tubesnout, Aulichthys japonicus were examined from the samples collected by a small beam trawl in the Zostera marina belt at the coastal water off Hamduck, Cheju Island, from May 1993 to May 1994. Tubesnout was the dominant species of overall 58 species collected in the study area throughout the year. The larvae and juvenile of tubesnout in the frequency distributions of body length began to appear in the Z. marina belt in March, and adults disappeared after May in the following year. The gonad weight index (GWI) and the condition factor (K) were high from November 1993 to January 1994 for males, while females were high from February to May 1994. Although tubesnout is an oviparous fish, males have the urogenital papilla. These results suggest that they were fertilized between November and January, and then males seemed to be died or move into other places. Females were examined to spawn from February to May. The stomach contents of tubesnout were dominated by copepoda smaller than ca. 1mm, Paracalanus, Oithona, Acartia, Oncaea and Harpacticoidae, accounting for 97% of total food items. The feeding habit of tubesnout did not vary by size. The fishes fed on Calanus, Euchaeta and decapoda larvae larger than ca. 3mm in March and April during the spawning season.
The species composition and seasonal variations of fish community in the Zostera marina belt at the coastal water off Hamduck, northern part of Cheju Island, were analyzed based on day and night samples collected by a small beam trawl from May 1993 to May 1994. The dominant species among the 58 fish species in 35 family were tubesnout, Aulichthys japonicus, gobie, Pterogobius zonoleucus, filefish, Rudarius ercodes, pipefish, Syngnathus schlegeli and sea catfish, Plotosus lineatus. These species comprised 86.1% in the number of individuals and 62% in biomass. The number of individuals and biomass were high between October and December, and low between January and April. About 90% of fishes were noncommercial and small-sized fishes, less than 14cm in total length. The larvae and juvenile fishes were collected in the study area throughout the year. The recruitments of dominant species were related to the seasonal variations of Z. marina utilized as a shelter or feeding ground. A japonicus, P. zonoleucus, Zoarchias glaber and Hexagrammos agrammus recruited between January and June, and R. ercodes, S. schlegeli, P. lineatus and Petroscirtes breviceps between July and December.

A river boundary is defined as the intersection between a main stream of a river and the land. Mapping of the river boundary is important for the protection of the properties in river areas, the prevention of flooding and the monitoring of the topographic changes in river areas. However, the utilization of the ground surveying technologies is not efficient for the mapping of the river boundary due to the irregular surfaces of river zones and the dynamic changes of water level of a river stream. Recently, the spatial information data sets such as the airborne LiDAR and aerial images are widely used for coastal mapping due to the acquisition of the topographic information without human accessibility. Due to these advantages, this research proposes a semi-automatic method for mapping of the river boundary using the spatial information data set such as the airborne LiDAR and the aerial photographs. Multiple image processing technologies such as the image segmentation algorithm and the edge detection algorithm are applied for the generation of the 3D river boundary using the aerial photographs and airborne topographic LiDAR data. Check points determined by the experienced expert are used for the measurement of the horizontal and vertical accuracy of the generated 3D river boundary. Statistical results show that the generated river boundary has a high accuracy in horizontal and vertical direction.
Geotextile tubes hydraulically or mechanically filled with dredged materials have been applied in hydraulic and coastal engineering in recent years(detached breakwater, groins and jetty). The geotextile tubes are made of sewn geosynthetics sheets. If the sandy soil is use to fill material, these inlets should be spaced closely to assure uniform filling of the tubes because sandy soil and geosynthetic is very pervious. However, the clayey soil or contaminated slurry is used, the inlets can be located relatively long distance. The fine clayey particles tend to rapidly blind the fabric slowing down water escape through the geotextile. This paper presents a field test result of a geotextile tube in the land reclamation project for the Songdo New City construction site. The dredged silty clay was dredged by the dredging ship and hydraulically pumped into the geotextile tube. The height of geotextile tube was measured at every filling stage and also measured width and diameter of geotextile tube with the elapsed time. Based on the test results, if the clayey filling material is used, the pumping step must be divided 3~4 stages for drainage and sediment. After complete drainage, the height of the geotextile tube reduces by approximately 50%.

The paradigm of the use and management of natural resources is changing. Wise use of natural resources can be achieved by enhancing their conservation value and, at the same time, taking them as an opportunity for regional development. It leads to an idea of pursuing regional development by making good use of natural resources. In this paper, natural resources were classified as living species resources, ecosystem and landscape resources, and non-living resources. The resources were divided into 27 detailed analysis indices. The administrative boundaries of 165 municipalities in Korea were defined as spatial analysis units. Finally, a spatial database of natural resources was built. To classify the regional types, we conducted factor analyses with a detailed index of natural resources and a cluster analysis with the factor value. As the result of the factor analysis, six factors have been deduced as follows: forest resources, landscape resources, coastal ecology resources, inland water resources, landform resources, and ecology visit resources. In addition, the cluster analyses were conducted for the points of the factors drawn. The final classification consists of nine groups, and appropriate methods for each regional development have been suggested. Results of this study will contribute to providing fundamental materials for site selection and objective-setting for regional development policies and planning in consideration of natural resources.

In this study, around Jeju area where climatic change is most considerably appearing in Han Peninsula, we prepared sea level rise height caused by sea level rise (Seogwipo 5.6 mm/yr, Jeju 5.3 mm/yr) and a sea level rise scenario for the case when an enlarged typhoon attacks during high water ordinary spring tide, and evaluated flooding area and effect on road and facility using Digital Elevation Model(DEM) and GIS Spatial Analysis Technique. As a result, the flooding areas were shown to be 2.9 $km^2$ in 2040, 5.4 $km^2$ in 2070, and maximum 5.4 $km^2$ in 2100. Analyzing the effect of flooding on each type of road, the local roads(Gun-do) were shown to be mostly affected. The most flood effected facilities were individual houses. Especially, as there is a possibility for casualties to occur due to disaster in Hwabuk-dong because the effect of flooding on individual houses in this area was shown to be high. In addition, flood on port facilities will considerably affect logistic and marine activities. This study is thought to be a basic data which can be utilized for establishment of strategic coping measures and policies of government affiliated organizations through analysis of effect of sea level rise on construction field.

Length and weight relationship (LWR) for dominant Antarctic fishes was determined in two species of the family Nototheniidae; black rockcod (Notothenia coriiceps) and marbled rockcod (Notothenia rossii). Samples were caught in the offshore sea around King Sejong station located on King George Island, Antarctica in January, 2017. A total of 30 N. coriiceps and 7 N. rossii were caught by fishing rod and hook. Average total length was 266.0 mm for N. coriiceps and 275.4 mm for N. rossii. Average total weight was 283.1g for N. coriiceps and 290 g for N. rossii. In terms of LWR and b value, the results showed that both two species had positive allometries (b>3) in good health. This size information of two dominant Antarctic fishes would be useful for future physiological studies to understand of adaptation mechanism and biological pathway of Antarctic marine organisms.
