Bottom Topography Observation in the Intertidal Zone Using a Camera Monitoring System (카메라 관측 시스템을 이용한 조간대 3차원 지형 관측)

  • Time series of waterline changes during a flood/ebb cycle can be utilized for supplementary data for measuring bottom topography. The waterlines extracted from consecutive images are substituted for depth contours using water level data. The distances between contours are quantified through a rectification image process. This technique is applied to the Keunpoolan beach in the Daeijak Island near Incheon. A camera monitoring technique supported by natural water level changes produces bottom topography with high precision. It is also less time consuming and more economical. The technique also can be utilized effectively to the physical modeling f3r measuring bottom changes in the three dimensional basin.

  • Ocean circulation in the Gulf of Alaska is remarkably constant throughout the year despite of being forced by one of the largest seasonal wind stresses in the world. To explain the small seasonal changes in the transport of Alaska Stream. a set of numerical models is employed. First a diagnostic approach is applied to reproduce circulation from the observed density structure. The results reveals the very small seasonal changes in the Alaska Stream transport. Next a series of the prognostic models is used: a barotropic model. a flat bottom baroclinic model, and baroclinic model with topography. These models reveal the influence of topography and baroclinicity on the ocean's response to the seasonal wind forcing. The intercomparisons of the various model results suggest that the seasonal response of the baroclinic ocean is primary barotropic and the resultant barotropic circulation is weakened by the scattering effect of the bottom topography.

  • To predict reasonably the movement and the concentration of the pollutants in the coastal area. A simulation model should be prepared considering detail topography with land-sea and the urban effects, and the resolution near the source. The explicit method can not be applied due to the instability of the numerical calculation in high horizontal-grid resolution, while the ADI scheme satisfied with the high horizontal grid resolution and can be used in the fine mesh system which shows the detail topography, atmospheric flow The ADI method which studied the high horizontal grid resolution was excellent. The two dimensional model used in the study using ADI method is proved as a reasonable model to predict the wind field in any small scale area including mountainous coastal urban area.

  • Ocean circulation in the Northeast Pacific Ocean is simulated using a high-resolution primitive equation numerical model with realistic bottom topography. The goal is to explain better the details of observed interannual variability of the circulation in the Gulf of Alaska. Our numerical model suggests that there is no seasonal shift in the Alaska gyre and that the interannual variability. reported earlier, is most likely the result of embedded mesoscale eddies in the dynamic topography. Such eddies have been observed in hydrographic. satellite-tracked drifters and altimeter data from the Gulf of Alaska.

  • Topography of beach line is keeping stability for several years, their soil values have been maintained in balances. Install of coastal structures have caused deformation for beaches and acted as a function to structures. Therefore, quantitative prediction of beaches topography according to structure install is required to prevent the beaches deformation and progress proper coastal preservation work. In this study, we analyzed coastal changes caused by erosion and accretion according to development and drew up a cross-section to share 8 stations using coordinates and depth surveying in groin of Soheuksan island port. Elevation distribution and changes by observation period is calculated -0.30m~+0.20m after comparing results of five months in October 7, 2004 surveying results and fell into insignificance. We thinks periodic observation of coastal erosion and accretion take place for the season and long-term coastal changes in beaches width is analyzed.

  • A numerical experiment is made to study the combined effect of differential cooling and bottom topography on the formation of Ulleung Warm Eddy. The Ulleung Warm Eddy appears after the passage around the Ulleung Basin of coastal trapped baroclinic waves generated in the north initial density front to the north, the continental slopes both to the west and south, and the Yamato Rise to the east. It resides therefore always inside the Ulleung Basin, as confirmed by observations.

  • The Characteristics of atmospheric flow and dispersion of air pollutants in the mountainous coastal area were studied using three-dimensional model by the combination of land/sea breezes and transport. It was then applied to Pusan city. As the urban area considered In this study is located in a mountainous coastal area, the atmospheric flow is strongly affected by the land/sea breezes and mountain/valley winds. The typical effects of land/sea breezes on the dispersion and the characteristics of pollutants movement in the region were analysed. The model has been proved to be an useful tool to prodict real time air pollutants transport as shown by the results of application studies In Pusan, Korea which Is an urbanized coastal area with mountainous topography. It was found that the pollutants are differently transported and concentrated as going Inland by the Influence of the sea breeze with topographic changes. By comparing the pollutants concentrations of the stimulated results with those of the observational results, It is shown that stimulated results in this study are in qualitative agreement with observational ones.

A Leading-Edge Operation Program of the East Sea Branch, KORDI

  • The East Sea Branch (ESB) of KORDI will be launched in 2008. She will take a role of monitoring the sea surface topography and temperature by satellites, short- and long-term sea levels by tide gauges, coastal currents and open-sea circulation by setting up coastal radars and mooring current-meters and acoustic equipments, as well as monitoring nearshore processes, coastal erosion and water pollution. A basic program of coastal zone management will help ocean-policy makers to set up right decisions based upon scientific background of the regional data in the East Sea. Networking among the neighboring countries around the sea will supply more useful information not only for experts but also for ordinary vacationers or fishermen. In order for this program to be successfully settled down during the next decade, it is necessary for a leader to have the right vision to attract more experts from global brain pools and to manage the ESB as a leading-edge observatory in the world. Details about this leading-edge operational program are introduced in the text.

  • The Characteristics of atmospheric flow and dispersion of air pollutants in the mountainous coastal area were studied using two-dimensional model by the combination of land-sea breezes and transport. The pollutants emitted into the simulated wind field in considering with the mesoscale local circulations. The typical effects of land-sea breezes and tophography of coastal area on the dispersion are discussed in detail, and the model is proved as an useful tool to pridict real time pollutant transport by the results of application studies in Pusan, Korea where the urbanized coastal area with mountainous topography. It was found that sulfur dioxide ($SO_2$) are differently transported and concentrated as going inland by the influence of the sea breeze with topographic changes.   • Precise digital elevation model (DEM) is an important issue in coastal area where DEMs in a time series are especially required. Although LIDAR system is useful in coastal regions, it is not yet popular in Korea mainly because of its high surveying cost and national security reasons. Recently, precise coastal DEM have been made using radar interferometry, waterline method. One of these methods, Spaceborne imaging radar interferometry has been widely used to measure the topography and deformation of the Earth. We acquired ALOS PALSAR FBD mode (Fine Beam Dual) data for evaluating the quality of interferograms and their coherency. The purpose of this study is construction of DEM using the ALOS PALSAR data using radar interferometry and analysis of surface characteristics by coherence and magnitude map over the Ganghwado and Siwha tidal flats and near coastal lands.
