  • The total number of Sea Area Utilization Consultation in the environment management sea areas reviewed from 2015 to 2017 were 60. The number of development projects in the environment conservation sea areas decreased steadily, but special management sea areas increased. Development types in environment management sea areas showed that artificial structure installation was the highest ratio, followed by fishery port development and construction of habor and coastal maintenance and sea water intake and draining. By comparing the trend of water quality changes using marine environment information system (MEIS) data in the environment management areas from 2006 to 2017, COD showed no significant changes but the environment conservation sea areas increased slightly, and the concentration of TN and TP decreased. Gwangyang and Masan bays in the special management sea areas and Gamak bay in the environment conservation sea areas displayed oxygen deficient mass in the summer. As the use of development projects of the environment management sea areas are performed continuously, an analysis of the status of sufficient water quality changes is necessary for environmental impact assessment (Sea Area Utilization Consultation) in the marine environment and should be evaluated mainly for management of contamination by diagnosing thoroughly water quality effects and the pollution of sediment. Especially, the water quality goal for the purpose of designation in each of the environment management sea areas is set clearly, connection with pollution source control and the total pollution load management system (TPLMS) should be proposed and measured to reduce the amount of contaminated water.

  • The single line hook fishery for giant pacific octopus, Parotopus dofleini is one of the important in coastal Kangwon-do of Korea, where was caught an average of 4,000 ton during the period of 1996~2000. The fishing gear is consisted of a single buoy line, a buoy and a hook. In this study, the responses of giant pacific octopus to single line hook gear were examined in an experimental tank using a video camera in order to know hooking mechanism and improve hook. Giant pacific octopus tend to envelop the bait with their arms by rush or slowly swimming towards it. When they rush to the bait, they show much feeding behaviour as withdrawing after enveloping the bait using two arms. But when they approach with slowly swimming to bait, they show feeding behaviour as stopping after enveloping the bait using one arm. and then, the highly hooking rate appeared more often in the case of latter then former. The average feeding time on a sardine, giant pacific octopus and pork fat showed the range of 1 to 30 min, 10 to 50 min, and 50 min to over 1 hour, respectively. This indicates that it takes longer time for giant pacific octopus to eat the tough meat than the soft meat. The performance concerned with hooking showed that the 'B' type hook with a short shank was more favorable than the 'A' type hook with a long shank. However, the 'A' type hook has the advantage of easy dropping out caught octopus, compared to the 'B' type.

  • Anchovy scoop nets, a kind of lift net have been used in the coastal area of Cheju and South sea of Korea. An incandescent lamp(AC 100V, 1kW) is being used as a fishing lamp for gathering anchovy. Fishing lamp was installed at 1m ahead of the prow and 1.5m higher than the water surface. The fishing lamp let fish school rise to the water surface and attract to bag net. Accordingly, a successful anchovy catching depends on controling of fishing lamp. On the study, the distribution of spectral irradiance illumination of incandescent lamp(1kw) and the irradiance efficiency of reflection plate were analyzed and discussed to investigate the ability of fishing lamp which can attract anchovy school effectively. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. Around 180% of irradiance efficiency of incandescent lamp was increased by using the reflection plate. The light of lamp was radiated into water with circular shape. 2. The irradiance illumination of incandescent lamp in air was a maximum in wave length of 994nm but it was 690nm at 0.5m and 1.0m of water depth. 3. The relationship between water depth(x) and water illumination(y) of vertical light is represented as follows : y=146.03e supper(-0.37x) 4. The light of incandescent lamp(1kW) pass through much better into vertical direction than horizontal but it was estimated that the light was not able to reach depth of 20m.

  • This present study investigated characteristics of distribution and community structure of macrobenthic invertebrates through the survey of commercial Danish seine fisheries from 2011 to 2013. In this study, a total of 28 species were sampled with a mean density of $32,568ind./km^2$ and mean biomass of $1,649.5kg/km^2$. The dominant species, comprising over 1.0% of the total number of individuals, were Chionoecetes opilio ($11,203ind./km^2$, 34.4%), Pandalus eous ($9,247ind./km^2$, 28.4%), Ophiuridae spp. ($5,750ind./km^2$, 17.7%), Argis lar ($2,631ind./km^2$, 8.1%), Neocrangon communis ($994ind./km^2$, 3.1%), Berryteuthis magister ($612ind./km^2$, 1.9%), Sepiola birostrata ($499ind./km^2$, 1.5%) and Strongylocentrotidae sp. ($424ind./km^2$, 1.3%). The dominant species, in terms of biomass, comprising over 1.0% of the total biomass, were C. opilio ($1,167.2kg/km^2$, 70.8%), B. magister ($130.3kg/km^2$, 7.9%), P. eous ($102.4kg/km^2$, 6.2%), Ophiuridae spp. ($84.6kg/km^2$, 5.1%), Enteroctopus dofleini ($45.5kg/km^2$, 2.8%), A. lar ($35.7kg/km^2$, 2.2%), Strongylocentrotidae sp. ($25.0kg/km^2$, 1.5%) and S. birostrata ($22.1kg/km^2$, 1.3%). Among them, S. birostrata, E. dofleini, Strongylocentrotidae sp. and Ophiuridae spp. were higher abundance and biomass in the shallow water (<200 meters in depth), whereas C. opilio, P. eous, A. lar, N. communis and B. magister were higher in the deep water (301 ~ 500 meters in depth). As the results of cluster analysis and non-metric multidimensional scaling (nMDS) analysis based on the Bray-Curtis similarity of fourth root transformed data for number of species and individuals, the macrobenthic invertebrates community by Danish seine survey was divided into two groups of station in the shallow water (<200 meters in depth, Group A) and the deep water (201 ~ 500 meters in depth, Group B). The major individual-dominant species was S. birostrata, Ophiuridae spp. and immature C. opilio in group A. But Group B was P. eous, A. lar, B. magister and mature C. opilio.

  • As marine desertification and chlorosis in Korean coast have been intensified over time, Korean government is promoting marine afforestation projects. However, marine afforestation location is mainly decided by administrative convenience. Also, there is limited literature on location suitability about the marine afforestation. This study aims to assess location suitability of marine afforestation considering 3 significant criteria: ecological, submarine topographical, and human-social environment. Jeju, the study area of this study, first observed chlorosis in Korean coast at the small fishery town in Seogwipo. Jeju is currently suffering from chlorosis all around the island. Habitat Evaluation Procedure (HEP), 3D kriging, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is applied as analysis methods. Especially, 3D kriging is utilized for modeling 3D ocean space reflecting ocean environment appropriately. The result shows that Jocheon coast has better location suitability than Seogwipo Pyoseon coast. Jocheon coast has the maximum 61% suitability as the habitat of Ecklonia cava Kjellman, and is highly evaluated in other criteria. The results of this study are expected to find optimal marine afforestation location, and to contribute to the restoration of the Jeju coastal ecosystem and the revitalization of Jeju fishing village societies.

  • A total of 90 surface sediment samples, collected from the continental margin area bordering east and southeast coast of Korea, were subject to the geochemical analyses with the aim of filling the gap in our knowledge of this environment. The analyzed items included the major elements (Al, Fe, Mg, Ca, K, Na, p and Mn), organic carbon, and some trace metals (Ba, Co, Cu, Sr and Zn). The sediment grain-size exerted a predominant influence on the contents of most elements, with the exceptions of Ca, K, Sr and Ba. The Ca and Sr contents, being closely interrelated each other, were mainly controlled by the calcium carbonate content. The K content, on the other hand, appeared to be influenced by both illite and feldspar. The Ba content showed a certain relationship with that of K, suggesting a common source of these two elements; potassium feldspar. The R-mode factor analysis result also reaffirmed the above-mentioned controlling factors on the sediment geochemistry. The grain-size dependency of trace metals obscures their areal distribution pattern from the total contents. However, with the metal/aluminum ratios we could differentiate the subtle difference in the metal enrichment. Hence, sediments of the southern coastal area appear to receive some anthropogenic inputs of metals, though the effect is still negligible.

  • Together with the trend of enhancement in domestic industrial development and economic progress due to import and export, the demand for construction of the roads, bridges, especially port facilities, and several coastal protection and ocean structures is increasing rapidly. MOMAF of Korean Government is driving construction of 9 new ports and renovation of the existing fishery ports. Among these structures most of bridge base, wharves, dolphins, quays, and jetties are being newly built of steel or concrete pile. As the base, supporting bulkheads, and piles are underwater after construction, it is difficult to figure out the status of structures and not enough to get maintenance and strengthen the structures. Every year, moreover, these works suck the government budget due to higher incomplete maintenance expense for protection from corrosions of structures and increased underwater construction period. For the purpose of cutting down the expense of government budget, it is necessary to extend the life cycle of the existing structures. Therefore, we developed a new method for maintenance of submerged structures near the waterline by allowing dry work environment with the floating caisson. The method shows easy to move around the working area and handle. It also showed not only a significant reduction maintenance expenses and time for anti-corrosion work but also better protection. This will be a milestone to reduce the maintenance and construction expenses for the shore and water structures.

  • This study examines the community characteristics of fish species collected by fyke net from the eastern coastal waters of Yeosu, Korea, during the period from 2020 to 2021. A total of 4,539 fish were sampled and classified into 43 species, 28 families, and 7 orders. The dominant species included Mugil cephalus (14.4%), Konosirus punctatus (10.9%), Lateolabrax japonicus (8.3%), Acanthopagrus schlegelii (7.9%), and Pennahia argentata (7.2%). The diversity index was highest in October (H'=2.888) and lowest in February (H'=2.075). Furthermore, the dominance index was highest in March (DI=0.524) and lowest in December (DI=0.178). Hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) revealed that fish communities could be divided into three groups based on Bray-Curtis similarity. Group 1, consisting mainly of species collected from June to October, formed one cluster. Group 2, including winter spawning species such as Pseudopleuronectes yokohamae, Clupea pallasii, and Hexagrammos otakii, sampled from November to February, formed another cluster. Group 3, which included species such as Larimichthys polyactis, Amblychaeturichthys hexanema, and Sebastes inermis, formed a cluster collected from March to May. The eastern coast of Yeosu is considered a suitable habitat for fisheries resources, including highly economically valuable species, and it is also assumed to be an important spawning and nursery ground for many fish species.

  • Hemitripterus villosus, a promising aquaculture fish species, is facing declining stocks. This study aims to provide normative standards for skeletal development to address persistent skeletal deformities in farmed fish. Specimens utilized in the study underwent artificial insemination with captured fish, and the resulting larvae and fry were preserved in a formalin solution. The skeletal ossification process commenced immediately after hatching, affecting the parasphenoid, premaxillary, maxillary, and dentary structures at an average total length of 13.65±0.71 mm (n=5). By sixty-five days post-hatching, ossification extended to the ethmoid and supraorbital, completing the head's development at an average total length of 21.24±0.50 mm (n=5). Clavicle ossification occurred at seven days post-hatching, corresponding to an average total length of 14.61±0.52 mm (n=5). At forty-four days post-hatching, the ossification of 4 actinosts took place, completing the shoulder girdle, with an average total length of 18.15±0.61 mm (n=5). Vertebral ossification initiated at ten days post-hatching, with an average total length of 14.80±0.65 mm (n=5). By fifty-four days post-hatching, 39 vertebral columns were ossified, reaching an average total length of 18.67±0.54 mm (n=5). Vertebral development was complete at sixty days post-hatching, with an average total length of 20.25±0.45 mm (n=5). This study sheds light on the skeletal development of H. villosus, providing valuable standards and fundamental data for understanding skeletal deformities in this species.
