  • A classification of snowfall type based on development mechanism is proposed using previous snowfall studies, operational experiences, etc. Five types are proposed: snowfall caused by 1) airmass transformation (AT type), 2) terrain effects in a situation of expanding Siberian High (TE type), 3) precipitation systems associated with extratropical cyclones (EC type), 4) indirect effects of extratropical cyclones passing over the sea to the south of the Korean peninsula (ECS type), and 5) combined effects of TE and ECS types (COM type). Snowfall events during 1981-2001 are classified according to the 5 types mentioned above. For this, 118 events, with at least one station with daily snowfall depth greater than 20 cm, are selected. For the classification, synoptic weather charts, satellite images, and precipitation data are used. For TE and COM types, local sea-level pressure chart is also used to confirm the presence of condition for TE type (this is done for events in 1990 and thereafter). The classification shows that 109 out of 118 events can be classified as one of the 5 types. In the remaining 8 events, heavy snowfall occurred only in Ullung Island. Its occurrence may be due to one or more of the following mechanism: airmass transformation, mesoscale cyclones and/or mesoscale convergence over the East Sea, etc. Each type shows different characteristics in location of snowfall and composition of precipitation (i.e., dry snow, rain, and mixed precipitation). The AT-type snowfall occurs mostly in the west coast, Jeju and Ullung Islands whereas the TE-type snowfall occurs in the East coast especially over the Young Dong area. The ECS-type snowfall occurs mostly over the southern part of the peninsula and some east cost area (sometimes, whole south Korea depending on the location of cyclones). The EC- and COM-type snowfalls occur in wider area, often whole south Korea. Precipitation composition also varies with the type. The AT-type has a snow ratio (SR) higher than the mean value. The TE- and EC-type have SR similar to the mean. The ECS- and COM-type have SR values smaller than the mean. Generally the SR values at high latitude and mountainous areas are higher than those at the other areas. The SR value informs the characteristics of the precipitation composition. An SR value larger than 10 means that all precipitation is composed of snow whereas a zero SR value means that all precipitation is composed of rain.

  • Changes in density of manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum to environment, catch and recruitment were studied in a few stations (Seonjae, Seongam, Hwangdo and Padori) in the West coast area of Korea from January, 2007 to December, 2009. Water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and pH in the study stations were 0.8 to $31.2^{\circ}C$, 22.1 to 33.7 psu, 5.0 to 12.0 mg/L and 7.39 to 8.99, respectively. The concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen, phosphate and silicate were 0.016 to 1.281 mg/L, 0.004 to 0.093 mg/L and 0.016 to 1.617 mg/L, respectively. Chlorophyll-a ranged from 0.2 to 12.1 ${\mu}g/L$, respectively. Substrata were mainly composed of muddy sand and very poorly sorted in Padori, muddy sand and well sorted in Seonjae and Hwangdo, gravelly muddy sand and poorly sorted in Seongam. Density was high in Seonjae and Seongam, but low in Hwangdo and Padori. In clam culture station, in which spat was naturally produced without sowing seedlings, the living density was decreased by increasing of death and a catch of shellfish, and recruitment was changed. Also, Density affected condition factor and shape of clam. Condition factor was the highest in Hwangdo, in which temperature in the winter and chlorophyll-a were high, and was the lowest in Padori. In the shape of clam, the shape in Seongam was a elongated form, but in Padori was a stunted form.

  • In this study, location evaluation of the natural environment of ports in the Joseon Dynasty was carried out to investigate the outport of east coast for the conquest of Usanguk. As a result of study, there were 55 ports and naval stations in the Joseon Dynasty, including the Yeongokpo, Aninpo, Samcheokpo, Susanpo, and Wolsongpo. As a result of the restoration work in the sea level that was done in the sixth century, the sea level at that time was about 1m higher than that at present. In terms of the location type, three types were identified via natural-environment analysis. Location type I consists of a total of 21 ports suitable for defense due to the sand spit in all the sides and because it is located in the bay of small and medium rivers. Location type II is composed of 22 ports close to the open seas, and location type III consists of a total of 12 ports centering on the bay. A total of nine ports satisfied the location factor in the shortest distance analysis(targeting location type I), 15 ports in the slope analysis, 13 ports in the hinterland analysis, 13 ports in the visibility analysis, and 11 ports in the ocean current analysis. It was found in the final evaluation that the I level regions consist of two ports(Obunjin and Mangyangjin). Obunjin has a location characteristic that is advantageous for defense and that makes it suitable to serve as an anchorage harbor for a large-scale fleet as its water level is deep and as it has a wide embayment. In conclusion, Obunjin is considered the outport that has the highest possibility of serving as Isabu's departure port for the conquest of Usanguk.

  • The inland logistics center is a large scale of logistics facility that enables roads, rails, ports, and airports to carry out chained-transports and combined-transports, and the logistics center are established at the main logistics posts in order to reduce the cost of transport by mass transportation. However, it is expected that the capacity of Euiwang ICD, the only inland logistics centers in the capital area, will reach its limit before 2015, so it is required to establish another stations or to improve the existing facility. Especially, in case of Euiwang ICD, the expansion of the center is not possible because of its position, so it is required to establish new logistics centers in other places in order to raise the capacity of transport. Therefore, this study suggests to establish new metropolitan logistics centers on the western coast line in order to solve the problem of shortage of tract capacity that is brought on by the newly established inland logistics centers on the axis of the western coastline (Song-san Station and An-jung Station), and analyzes how the new logistics center will distribute railroad cargoes. By these, this study contributes to reduce the cost of transport by providing smooth railroad transport service.

  • The ecophysiological characteristics of the oyster Crassostrea gigas in Taean area, west coast of Korea, were investigated after main spawning season from September 2011 to January 2012 to confirm the recovery process of condition. The cupped oysters, from 4 different off-bottom culture areas were compared the gonad indices, histological analysis combined with measurement of RNA/DNA contents and ratios in gonad of each sex were undertaken. To evaluate the health condition of oyster after spawning, the RNA/DNA ratio in adductor muscle, fatness and condition index (CI) were used. The results showed that cupped oysters cultured in Uihang coastal area were different physiological aspects than other experiment areas, namely continuously decreasing RNA/DNA content and ratio in adductor muscle, lowest CI and fatness. Oysters cultured in Iwon Station 1 and 2 showed fast recovery in RNA/DNA, increase in fatness and CI during post-spawning stage until October rapidly and there after it decreased. Oysters in Shinduri showed rapidly decrease in fatness and CI until October. On the contrary to this factors, RNA/DNA ratio in adductor muscle increased as like protein until October. Partially spawning season could be observed until December in Shinduri and Iwon Station 1.

  • 4S (Ship to Ship, Ship to Shore) communication is the key to strategic development of e-navigation, a core element of IT vessel convergence. 4S communication is intended to integrate and standardize various communication infrastructures on land and communication equipment complying with communication equipment equipped in ships. This paper aims to apply the Korean technology IEEE 802.16e adopted as an international standard, to replace and compensate for existing vessel communication media such as low speed HF/MF/VHF to the ocean environment. To this end, various experimental conditions between the coast station where a relay station was installed and related equipment equipped on a ship are set. Communication signals were monitored and the RSSI and CINR were measured. Based on experimental analysis and results, various challenges and solutions which may occur in ocean environment were sought, and communication availability was analyzed through transmission data throughput, at the maximum effective distance range of the signal. It was proven that high speed multimedia data could be exchanged for up to 20 km even among 80km kph ships moving around near the sea, ensuring that this technology could be applied to the ocean environment.

  • Spatial distribution and temporal variations of phytoplankton population were investigated in Ch$\check{o}$nsu Bay, the Korean western coast. Diurnal fluctuations of phytoplankton standing crop are associated with semidiurnal tidal cycle, as high concentration at low tide and low at high tide. In monthly variations of phytopolankton standing crop, the 1st peak occurrs in March and the 2nd one in August. The study area could be divided into two parts, outer bay and inner bay according to the physical and biological factors such as water temperature and salinity, and phytoplankton distribution patterns. The northern waters of the bay, however, may be affected by irregular fresh water influx through the lock of the dike. Because of the hydrographical differences among the surveyed stations, phytoplankton species succession patterns of each station have some differences. On the whole in this study area, Paralia sulcata and Skeletonema costatum are dominant species all the year round. However, except June, Paralia sulcata, a tychopelagic diatom is not dominant species at Station 6 (northern end of the bay). This seems to be caused by the fact that the waters of northern part of the bay is less turbulent than that of the outer bay. The result of principal component analysis (PCA) indicates that Ch$\check{o}$nsu Bay is normal coastal ecosystem where the environmental conditions are cycled in a year, and water temperature and nitrogenous nutrients such as nitrate, nitrite and ammonia are major factors to influence the annual cycle of environmental conditions.

  • This study examined the spatial distribution of precipitation in Sokcho area. The hourly, daily and monthly precipitation on the 2 stations, 5 AWS in Sokcho area were analyzed by daily, monthly, altitudinal distribution and synoptic environment. The results of the Study are as follows. The amount of Yearly precipitation, 1970~1999 in Sokcho area is gradually increasing. The amount of monthly precipitation 1970~1999 at Sorak weather observation station (altitude 148m), Compared with that in 7 Stations is greatest in spring, Summer and autumn. Because the valleys near Ssangcheon river are funnels for sea wind into Sorak weather observation station. The amount of Summerly precipitation at Mishiryong(1993~1999), the highest altitude in 7 weather observations stations is more 95.2mm than that of Sokcho airport, the lowest altitude, but the amount of winterly precipitation at Sokcho airport is more 89.6mm than that of Mishiryong. When the heavy rainfall and the heavy Snowfall occured in Sokcho area, wind systems were mainly a sea wind (north-north-eastly wind, north-westly wind) and daily mean wind speed was respectively 4.4㎧, 3.6㎧. The amount of the heavy rainfall and heavy snow fall in Sokcho area is closely associated with the north-eastly stream at the lower and the upper level toward the coast of East sea(Sokcho area).

  • An investigation on the soft-bottom macrobenthic community in the inner Kyeonggi Bay was conducted in July, October of 1987 and February, May of 1988. The benthic fauna comprised a total of 87 species and showed mean density of 550 indiv./$m^2$. Major faunal groups are polychaetes, molluks, and crustaceans, corresponding to 64.7%, 17.4%, and 15.2% in total abundance respectively. The most abundant species was Tharyx sp. (10.9%), and followed by Mactra veneriformis (10.5%), Mediomastus sp. (8.6%), and Glycinde sp. (8.0%) etc.. The important species in the intertidal zone were Mactra veneriformis, Hinia festiva, and Nephtys californiensis, whereas those in subtidal channel region were Tharyx sp., mediomastus sp., Sternaspis scutata, and Nephtys polybranchia. The study area could be divided into 4 station groups based on the species composition; two groups within interidal flat and two in channel regions. Each station group sustained its specific benthic faunal assemblage; Mactra-Hinia, Aricidea-Haploscoloplos assemblages in the intertidal flat and Harpiniopsis-Urothoe, Mediomastus-Sternaspis assemblages in the subtidal channel region. The Mediomastus-Sternaspis assemblage showed the highest species number and population density, and also did the highest diversity and evenness indices. The Harpiniopsis-Urothoe assemblage showed the poor species composition and abundance, and so recorded the highest dominance index. Two assemblages in the intertidal flat had the intermediate values in all the biological parameters. The northern channel region of zone S-2 showed the high abundance in species composition, which seems to be caused by the heterogeneous sediment and the organic enrichment from the Han River and the Incheon industrial complex.

  • This study was carried out to estimate the benthic environments and polychaetous community in Garolim Bay, through five field surveys from April 2006 to April 2007. Garilim Bay is a semi-enclosed bay and composed of a biramous tidal channel and nearby wide tidal flats. Surface sediment in the inner bay was composed of fine grained particles whereas that in the mouth area of bay was of coarse grained ones. Benthic polychaete worms were the most dominant taxa occupying 65.1% of total benthic macrofauna. Species number was higher in the inner bay than mouth and outer area of bay, and in the bay higher on the tidal flat than channel area. Density was higher on the tidal flat than channel area. Dominant polychaetous species were Prionospio sp., Heteromastus filiformis, Lumbrineris longifolia and so on, which is known as opportunistic species. Prionospio sp. and H. filiformis inhabited mainly on the tidal flats in inner bay, while L. longifolia in the channel area and mouth of the bay. Cluster analysis and nMDS showed the typical inner-to-outward distribution of station groups, which indicated the sequential difference of the species composition of each station group. To assess the benthic healthiness of Garolim Bay by AMBI and BPI analysis, the benthic condition was analyzed from slightly polluted in the outer and mouth of the bay to moderately polluted in the inner bay. Assumed from dominant species composition and benthic healthiness condition, benthic environments of Garolim Bay was slightly unstable and disturbed and organic enrichment was currently underway by massed fisheries farms.
