  • Fish schools behave like a single organism and offer a considerable survival advantage. In our simulations, the fish school is well organized and behaves like a single creature depending solely on the interactions among individuals without having any director fish. This kind of system can be said as the typical one of "Complex Systems". We make clear the validity of fractal analyses to evaluate fish school movements through evaluation of both the simulated movements and the real sardine movements taken by video tape. The analyses showed that we need two kinds of fractal dimensions (D$_1$, D$_2$) to fit to the observations; the one(D$_1$) corresponds to smaller coarsening levels and D$_2$ does to larger coarsening levels. The double linear analyses in ...

  • Age hardenable aluminium alloys show high specific strength, good thermal and electrical conductivity as well as lightness, and are typical aircraft materials. High fatigue strength and good resistancy against stress corrosion cracking are also important for aircraft aluminium alloys. Al alloy 7050 has been developed to meet the above mentioned requirements and the use of this alloy as forged aircraft part becomes more important. However, forged 7050 parts showed undersiable structures such as severe local grain coarsening in surface area and unproper metal flow that is degrading mechanical properties. In this paper, microstructural aspects of die forging in the Al alloy 7050 are investigated. Also suggested are the optimal forging conditions for microstructural control of Al alloy 7050.

  • Both densification and grain growth are driven by the reduction of the interfacial area, kinetics of which depends strongly on the interface structure. Abnormal grain coarsening in the system of singular solid/liquid interface such as WC-Co alloys was explained by the growth mechanism of 2-dimensional nucleation. Based on this concept, the marked inhibition of coarsening of WC grains by VC addition can be approached by the increase in the step free energy, which increases the barrier of 2-dimensional nucleation. The activated sintering in tungsten powders can be approached by the interface structure change induced by the addition of a small amount of nickel.

  • In all conventional sintered PM products, the pores present are of two types, primary and secondary. Primary pores forming during compaction and latter during sintering, due to penetration of formed liquid through the matrix grain boundary. Effect of carbon addition on diffusion of Cu in SH737-2Cu system was investigated. After compaction and transient liquid phase sintering at $1120^{\circ}C$ and $1180^{\circ}C$, samples were characterized for densification, showing rise in sintering density and reduction in swelling on carbon addition. Quantitative microstructural characterization (shape factor and pore size) revealed bimodal distribution for 0% carbon, more rounded pores for 0.9% carbon and higher sintering temperature, and pore coarsening at higher sintering temperature.

  • Bainitic microalloyed steels have drawn a lot of attention because of high strength combined with high toughness. In order to process the alloys easily , it is necessary to get the alloys of high hardenability. Mo and B were added to enhance the hardenability, which was demonstrated by TTT simulation and microstructures. It was also identified using BNCT that B, hardenability raising element, was distributed more evenly as cooling rate went up. Examination of grain coarsening temperature depending upon austenitizing temperature revealed that V and Ti effectively inhibited the grain growth up to $1000^{\circ}C\;and\;1050^{\circ}C$ respectively.
