  • In order to investigate the effect of Ge addition to the Cu matrix on the microstructure and the critical current density, four kinds of internal tin processed Nb$_3$Sn strands with pure Cu and Cu 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 wt % Ge alloys were drawn to 0.8 mm diameter. The microstructure and critical current of internal tin processed Nb$_3$Sn wires that were heat treated at temperatures ranging from 68$0^{\circ}C$ to 74$0^{\circ}C$ for 240h were investigated. The Ge addition to the matrix did not make workability worse. A Ge rich layer in the Cu-Ge matrix suppressed the growth of the Nb$_3$Sn layer and promoted grain coarsening. The greater the Ge content in the matrix, the lower the net Jc result after Nb$_3$sn reaction heat treatment. There was no significant variation in Jc observed with heat treatment temperature ranging from 68$0^{\circ}C$ to 74$0^{\circ}C$. The values of AC loss of Ge added wires were decreased to 40 % compare with no addition wire. Low AC loss was due to segregation of Ge rich layer in the Cu-Ge matrix. If Ge added wire with thin Nb filaments were fabricated, slow diffusion rate of Sn would be overcome and decreased AC loss that is weak Point of internal tin method.

  • Despite the improved formability and processing advantages, the use of semi-solid metals is greatly limited due to the difficulties in controlling the optimum forming parameters. In the present study, the tensile properties of closed die, pressure formed semi-solid A356 alloy were examined. It was demonstrated that the tensile strength of thixoformed A356 alloy could be greatly reduced when the forming parameters were not rigorously controlled. The reduced strength of unappropriately formed products appeared to be related to the coarsening of the primary phases. The possibility of improving tensile properties of as-formed products by simple post heat treatment was also assessed.

  • Twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) steels have attracted great attention due to their excellent mechanical properties of high tensile strength (over 800MPa) and high ductility (over 50%), which result from the high strain hardening due to the mechanical twin formation during plastic deformation. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of annealing temperature and alloying elements on the mechanical properties of Fe-18Mn-0.6C TWIP steel. In 1.5%Al TWIP steel with 0.123%Ti content, the average recrystallized grain size was reduced to 2.5 ${\mu}m$ by cold rolling and annealing at $800^{\circ}C$ for 5 min, because of the pinning effect of the fine TiC carbides on grain coarsening. The tensile strength was decreased and the ductility was improved with the increase of the annealing temperature. However, a reversion of hardness and yield strength happened between $750^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$ due to TiC and $M_3C$ type precipitation. 0.56% Ni added TWIP steel exhibited relatively lower yield strength, because Ni precipitates were not formed during the annealing process. When this specimen was annealed at $800^{\circ}C$ for 5min, the tensile strength and elongation were revealed at 1096MPa and 61.8%, respectively.

  • Effect of starting SiC particle size on nitridation rate and flexural strength of $Si_3N_4$-bonded-SiC (SNBSC) ceramics was investigated by using SiC particles of different size (${\sim}200\;{\mu}m$, ${\sim}100\;{\mu}m$ and ${\sim}45\;{\mu}m$). The specimen prepared from smaller SiC particles resulted in higher nitridation rate after nitridation at $1450^{\circ}C$, owing to the lower packing density in green body. The flexural strength showed maxima after 1-h nitridation for all specimens and then decreased with prolonged nitridation because of local densification-induced pore coarsening. The specimen prepared from smaller SiC particles showed better flexural strength because of smaller pore size and partly higher nitridation rate in the specimen. A maximal flexural strength of 29 MPa was obtained in the specimen with a density of $2.04\;g{\cdot}cm^3$, which was prepared from $45\;{\mu}m$-SiC particles.

  • This study investigated the effects of grain size and phase constitution on the mechanical properties of $3Y-ZrO_2$ by varying the sintering conditions. The raw powder prepared by a low-cost wet milling using the coarse solid oxide powders was sintered by both pressureless sintering and hot-pressing, respectively. As increasing holding time at $1450^{\circ}C$ for pressureless sintering, it promoted the microstructural coarsening of matrix grains and the phase transformation to tetragonal phase, whereas the bimodal microstructure embedded with abnormal $cubic-ZrO_2$ grains was observed regardless of sintering time. On the other hand, the specimens hot-pressed at $1300^{\circ}C$ for 2 h reached ~ 97% of relative density with homogeneous fine microstructure and mixed phase constitution. It was found that the proportion of untransformed monoclinic zirconia had the most adverse effect on the biaxial strength compared to the impacts of grain size and density. The pressureless sintering of the low-cost powder for prolonged sintering time to 8 h led to a decent combination of mechanical properties ($H_V=13.2GPa$, $K_{IC}=8.16MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, ${\sigma}=981MPa$).

  • [ $B_4C$ ] ceramics were fabricated by spark plasma sintering process and their sintering behavior, microstructure and mechanical properties were evaluated. Relative density of $B_4C$ ceramics were obtained by spark plasma sintering method reached as high as 99% at lower temperature than conventional sintering method, in addition, without any sintering additives. The mechanical properties of $B_4C$ ceramics was improved by a methanol washing process which can be removed $B_2O_3$ phase from a $B_4C$ powder surface. This improvement results ken the formation of homogeneous microstructure because the grain coarsening was suppressed by the elimination of $B_2O_3$ phase. Particularly, fracture toughness of the sintered specimen using a methanol washed powder improved over 30% compared with the specimen using an as-received commercial powder.

  • In Kwangyang Bay, the south coast of Korea, surface sediments and sedimentation rates have been investigated to understand the distribution and variation of tidal flat sediments after the construction of sea dyke. The mean grain size of the surface sediments during autumn is coarser, and decrease from winter to summer except for temporarily coarsening in the early summer. The depositional processes are prevalent in spring, while erosional processes are dominant in summer and autumn. This seasonal variation of sedimentary processes show similar results monitored from 2001 to 2003 before the construction of sea dyke. In the northern area of the bay, net annual sedimentation rates show similar results monitored from 2001 to 2003 before the construction of sea dyke. However, in the western area of the bay, net annual sedimentation rates change from erosion-dominated to deposition-dominated environments. It is considered that the western area of the bay is changed to erosion-dominated environments, as a result of the changes of hydrodynamic conditions, caused by sea dyke construction.

  • In the life assessment for plant structural component, the research on deterioration of toughness and material properties occurred in weldments has been considered as very important problems. In general, the microstructures composed in weldments are hugely classified with weld metal(W.M), fusion line(F.L), heat affected zone(HAZ), and base metal(B.M). It has been reported that the creep characteristics on weldments having variable microstructures could be unpredictably changed. Furthermore, it is also known that HAZ adjacent to F.L exhibits the decreased creep strength compared to those in base or weld metals, and promotes the occurrence of Type III and Type IV cracking due to the growth of grains and the coarsening carbides precipitated in ferritic matrix by welding and PWHT processes. However, the lots of works reported up to date on creep damage in power plant components have been mostly conducted on B.M and the creep properties on a localized microstructures in weldments have not as yet been throughly investigated. In this paper, for various microstructures such as coarse grain HAZ(CGHAZ), W.M and B.M in X20CrMoV121 steel weldment, the small punch-creep(SP-Creep) test using miniaturized specimen(t=0.5mm, 0.25mm) is performed to investigate a possibility for creep characteristics evaluation.

  • It has recently been raised main issue how solve the problem of insufficient energy. One of the solution is to increase the thermal efficiency of power generation system. For the purpose of high efficiency, it is necessary to increase the steam temperature and pressure. So, the use of modified $9{\sim}12%Cr$ steel having superior creep rupture strength and oxidation resistance is required to endure such severe environment. The evaluation of creep properties of those heat resistance material is very important to secure the reliability of high temperature and pressure structural components. Since creep properties are determined by microstructural change such as carbide precipitation and coarsening, It is certain that there are some relationship between creep properties and hardness affected by microstructure. In this study, SP-Creep ruptured test for newly developed 9Cr steel being used as boiler valve material was performed, and creep properties of the material were evaluated. Also, hardness test were performed and hardness results were related to the creep properties such as LMP and creep strength to verify the availability of SP-Creep test as creep test method.

  • In the present study, the influences of grains and precipitates of microstructural evolution on the ultrasonic nonlinearity have been experimentally investigated. The prior-austenite grain and precipitate size are controlled by the variation in austenitizing and tempering conditions in reactor pressure vessel materials of nuclear power plant, SA508 Gr.3 low alloys. The ultrasonic nonlinearity was found to have strong correlations with grains and precipitates since the ultrasonic nonlinear parameter $\beta$ shows decrease trend with coarsening of grains and precipitates. Although the prior-austenite grain size increased, the $\beta$ changed little due to the effects of subgrains, packets and laths. For the preciptate effects, the $\beta$ decreased sharply due to decrease in $Mo_2C$ causing the coherency stain in addition to the precipitate size. The results in this study may provide a potential for characterizing the microstructural evolution, grains and precipitates, by measuring the ultrasonic nonlinearity.
