Slurry shield tunnelling ensures stability by pressurizing the tunnel face with the slurry contained in the chamber. It resists water and earth pressure in order to prevent the failure in the tunnel face during tunnel excavation. If the ground is relatively coarse, slurry can not clog the tunnel face and excessive slurry infiltration will occur. In this case chemical compounds or additives should be added to the slurry in order to improve the clogging phenomena at the tunnel face. In this study, the effect of the carbon dioxide gas as an additive to the slurry instead of chemical compounds on the capability of enhancing the clogging in the tunnel face is investigated. Bubbles arising from the carbonate-added slurry are trapped in the soil voids enhancing the clogging capability. This effect is studied in this paper by performing laboratory model tests simulating in-situ conditions, and by adopting the fine particle clogging theory. Tunnel face stability analysis was also performed and it was found that the effective size ($D_{10}$) of soils which can guarantee tunnel stability utilizing the carbonate-added slurry increased from 1.0 mm up to 2.6 mm. Moreover, Stability analysis showed that the tunnel face is stable if the ${\lambda}$(deposition coefficient) value is greater than $0.007sec^{-1}$.

This study has been carried out to evaluate the CBR characteristics and the correlations among every soil properties of National road in Yeongnam region. Total of 480 soil samples were collected from 41 administrative districts for more than 30 years. Their physical and mechanical properties such as natural water content, the Atterberg limit, No. 200 sieve passing, the compaction test and the CBR test results were involved. The soils in Yeongnam region, SM, SC, SP and CL by USCS have predominated approximately 79%. The test results show that average CBR values of gravel and sand range from 12.7% to 20.3% and those of silt and clay range from 4.8% to 7.1%. It means that average CBR values of fine grained soils are less than a half of coarse grained one. Natural water content, No. 200 sieve passing, optimum moisture content and maximum dry density of soils are well correlated with CBR values. Especially, it presents that No. 200 sieve passing is the best correlation factor with CBR value. If consider the partition off this region into 6 zones of classified by mother rock, the correlation between CBR value and every soil properties tends to increase. It is suggested that tables, figures and the regressions described in this paper may be available for designers and engineers to understand the characteristics of an embankment materials in Yeongnam region.

To improve water quality particularly for sea bathers along the Fylde coastal zone near Blackpool, North West England, waste water from a sewage outfall is studied using a mathematical model. The explicit second order accurate central scheme and the third order accurate QUICKEST scheme are used to represent the diffusion terms and the advection terms of the advective-diffusion equation, respectively. Hydrodynamic model is run for a coarse and fine grid, of 1km and 200m, respectively, obtaining good agreement with measured data. Water quality model is then used to predict faecal coliform levels in the region for four different scenarios, including discharges from: - (i) Fleetwood outfall, (ii)River Ribble for summer condition, (iii)River Ribble for winter condition, and (iv)combined sewer overflows for the Blackpool and Fleetwood communities. Main findings from the simulations are:- (i) Fleetwood outfall has a negligible impact on the beaches with respect to pathogen levels; (ii) Discharge from River Ribble for both summer and winter conditions is predicted in the range of coliform levels 10 -500 counts/100ml along the beach at Lytham St. Annes; and (iii) The CSO effluent discharges are predicted not to advect out into offshore by stronger tidal currents.

This study was carried out to estimate the benthic environments and polychaetous community in Garolim Bay, through five field surveys from April 2006 to April 2007. Garilim Bay is a semi-enclosed bay and composed of a biramous tidal channel and nearby wide tidal flats. Surface sediment in the inner bay was composed of fine grained particles whereas that in the mouth area of bay was of coarse grained ones. Benthic polychaete worms were the most dominant taxa occupying 65.1% of total benthic macrofauna. Species number was higher in the inner bay than mouth and outer area of bay, and in the bay higher on the tidal flat than channel area. Density was higher on the tidal flat than channel area. Dominant polychaetous species were Prionospio sp., Heteromastus filiformis, Lumbrineris longifolia and so on, which is known as opportunistic species. Prionospio sp. and H. filiformis inhabited mainly on the tidal flats in inner bay, while L. longifolia in the channel area and mouth of the bay. Cluster analysis and nMDS showed the typical inner-to-outward distribution of station groups, which indicated the sequential difference of the species composition of each station group. To assess the benthic healthiness of Garolim Bay by AMBI and BPI analysis, the benthic condition was analyzed from slightly polluted in the outer and mouth of the bay to moderately polluted in the inner bay. Assumed from dominant species composition and benthic healthiness condition, benthic environments of Garolim Bay was slightly unstable and disturbed and organic enrichment was currently underway by massed fisheries farms.

This paper presents experimental and analytical results on the long-term behavior of the reinforced recycled aggregate concrete beams under sustained loading. In this experimental program, three beams with different conditions of aggregates replacement (natural aggregate 100%, recycled coarse aggregate 100%, recycled fine aggregate 50%) were subjected to the sustained flexural loading that was a half of the nominal flexural capacity over a period of 1 year. The beam were designed with net span of 2,000 mm and rectangular cross-section of 170 mm width and 170 mm effective depth. The beams were instrumented and monitored to observe the change in the long-term behavior due to creep and shrinkage of concrete under sustained loading. The predictions of long-term deflection by ACI code, Branson, Mayer, Neville, EMM and AEMM were compared with the experimental results. From the experimental results, the reinforced concrete beams with recycled aggregates showed the same performance as that of a beam with natural aggregate. The proposed method to predict the long-term deflections of reinforced recycled aggregate concrete beams gives a good estimation for experimental results.

The Ogmae alunite-kaolinite deposit occurs in acidic tuff, the Hwangsan Tuff, of upper Crataceous age in the Haenam volcanic field, SW Jeonnam. This deposit characterized by advanced argillic alteration formed $71.8{\pm}2.8{\sim}73.9{\pm}2.8$ Ma ago in very shallow depth environment with acid-sulfate solution. Wallrock alteration can be classified into four zones from the center to the margin of the deposit: alunite, kaolinite, illite, and silicified zone. The mineral assemblage in the alunite zone, ore zone, is alunite-quartz-pyritekaolinite. Consideration of stability relation of these minerals suggests that the maximum alteration temperature is estimated at about $250^{\circ}C$ with solution pH of 3 or below assuming that pressure does not exceed 0.3 Kb. Alunite occurs as two different types; replacement and vein-type deposit. The former one consists of fine grained alunite and the later one coarse grained and relatively pure alunite that formed by open space filling. Isomorphous substitution of Na for K in these two types of alunites range 0 to 40 %, indicating that Na/K ratio in the solution is spontaneously changed during the alteration process. Alunite which has higher Na substitution probably formed in an earlier stage while the solution sustain high Na/K ratio. K-Ar age of alunites indicate that the replacement alunite formed earlier($73.9{\pm}2.8Ma$) than the vein-type alunite($71.8{\pm}2.8Ma$). The ${\delta}^{34}S$ value of pyrite and alunite indicate that those minerals formed at isotopically nonequillibrium state. The ${\delta}^{16}O$ and ${\delta}D$ values, of kaolintics 5.0 to 9.0‰ and -54 to -99‰, respectively, indicate that those are formed by hydrothermal solution having magmatic origin which have been diluted by low ${\delta}D$ meteoric water.

Fine and coarse PM had been collected by LVCI (low volume cascade impactor) and HVAS (high volume air sampler) during January 1989 to April 2012 at Kyung Hee University, Global Campus located on the boarder of Yongin and Suwon. The database of PM mass concentration was constructed and then intensively and extensively investigated to understand monthly, seasonal, and annual patterns of each PM behavior. Especially the study separated all the PM data into the 5 Period Zones, which were classified on the basis of social, political, and environmental issues that might be influencing local ambient air quality during the monitoring period. The overall $PM_{10}$ level had been continuously decreased until 2005 and after then was staggering due to rapidly increasing $PM_{2.5}$ level in $PM_{10}$. The annual average of $PM_{2.5}$ concentration varied from $34.3{\mu}g/m^3$ to $59.0{\mu}g/m^3$, which were much higher than the 2015 ambient air quality standard. The $PM_{2.5}$ level was strongly associated with haze events, while both $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ levels were associated with Yellow storm events. Daily concentrations of $PM_{2.5}$ were ranged $13.1{\sim}212.9{\mu}g/m^3$ in haze days and $33.6{\sim}124.6{\mu}g/m^3$ in Asian dust days. The study also intensively investigated annual and seasonal patterns of $PM_{2.5}/PM_{10}$ ratios.
The effect of the maximum aggregate size and substitution rate of natural sand on the mechanical properties of concrete is evaluated using 15 lightweight aggregate concrete mixes. For mechanical properties of concrete, compressive strength increase with respect to age, tensile resistance, elastic modulus, rupture modulus, and stress-strain relationship were measured. The experimental data were compared with the design equations specified in ACI 318-08, EC2, and/or CEB-FIP code provisions and empirical equations proposed by Slate et al., Yang et al., and Wang et al. The test results showed that compressive strength of lightweight concrete decreased with increase in maximum aggregate size and amount of lightweight fine aggregates. The parameters to predict the compressive strength development could be empirically formulated as a function of specific gravity of coarse aggregates and substitution rate of natural sand. The measured rupture modulus and tensile strength of concrete were commonly less than the prediction values obtained from code provisions or empirical equations, which can be attributed to the tensile resistance of lightweight aggregate concrete being significantly affected by its density as well as compressive strength.
We analyzed the unit cell performance against the cathode porosity, which is supposed to be closely related with active sites for the cathode reaction. In order to fabricate the unit cells with different porosity in the cathode layer we changed the mixing ratio of fine and coarse LSCF cathode powders. The final porosity of each cathode layer was 14, 23, 27, $39\%$ respectively. According to the electrochemical analysis of unit cell performance via DC current interruption and AC impedance method, the electrodic polarization resistance was diminished as the cathode porosity increased. The decrease of polarization resistance was attributed due to the increase of active reaction sites and the enhancement of overall unit cell performance could be explained in the same line.
This study was conducted to develop rational soil management and enhance the productivity of lands converted from paddy soils. Specifically, the changes in the soil physical properties brought about by the change in land usage from paddy soil were evaluated. This was carried out from 1999 to 2001 at 50 site in large-scale converted paddy fields of Kimcheon, Youngcheon, Gyeongsan and Milyang in the Youngnam region, categorized according to soil texture and drainage class. The ridge height of converted paddy soils was higher in coarse-textured and poorly-drained soils than in fine-textured and well-drained soils. The gray color of the surface soil was of lesser degree in converted soils than paddy soils and more notable in welldrained soils. The porosity ratio and the formation of aggregate structure were higher, and the appearance of soil mottling was deeper in converted paddy fields than in paddy soils. The glaying layer "g" of surface soil degraded with time. The porosity and amount of water stable aggregate was found to increase with time after conversion. The penetration resistance of the converted paddy soil was lower and deeper with time after conversion. The soil aeration of the converted paddy soil was lower in sandy loam than in loamy soil. Furthermore, soil aeration was influenced by ridge height and drainage class in poorly-drained soils.
