To examine the effects of substratum types on the growth of Caulerpa okamurae, sand surface and sand burial experiments were conducted. Five assimilators (erect fronds) per replicate were cultured for 15 d on the surface of three different treatments: fine sand (200 ㎛), coarse sand (600 ㎛), and no sand (control). Also, three stolons and three assimilators were buried by fine grain or coarse grain sands and incubated for 15 d. In both experiments, other culture conditions included 25℃, 30 μmol photons m-2 s-1, and 16 : 8 h L : D (light : dark). In both experiments, stolon + assimilator-, assimilator-, and stolon-weights were measured. Relative growth rates (RGRs) of stolon + assimilator weights ranged from 0.43 to 1.95% d-1 at no sand and fine sand treatment, respectively. RGRs for the weight of stolon + assimilator and new assimilators were significantly greater on the fine- and coarse sand surface than the control. In the burial experiments, RGRs of stolons (4.28% d-1 at coarse sand and 5.57% d-1 at fine sand, respectively) were significantly greater than those of assimilators (1.38% d-1 at fine sand and 1.82% d-1 at coarse sand, respectively). When stolons were buried, RGRs for assimilators were greater at the fine sand than at the coarse sand treatment. On the other hand, RGRs of buried assimilators for total frond weights and for newly produced stolons were significantly greater at the coarse sands than at the fine sands. In conclusion, C. okamurae grew well with all substrates of sands and showed better growth on fine sands than coarse ones. This result suggests that the growth of stolons and assimilators of C. okamurae is stimulated after stable attachment to the sand substrates by rhizophores. In addition, stolons showed higher growth rates than the assimilators in the sand burial states, indicating that stolons are more tolerant to low light than assimilators of C. okamurae.

The effect on the particulate matters in the atmosphere was investigated in Seoul area from March, 1984 to Aprill, 1985. Aerosols were collected by filters on nine stages Andrsen Air Sampler, and size distribution and total concentration of the aerosols, Fe and Pb were measured. In spring with Yellow Sand the concentration of particles in aerosols was 185.55$\mug/m^3$ and CP/TA was 65.9%. But in spring without Yellow Sand those of particles was 135.45$\mug/m^3$ and CP/TA was 58.6%. Accordingly the concentration of coarse particles with Yellow Sand was higher than without them in Spring. Above results indicate that in Seoul Area the main source of air pollution originated from natural burdens, especially from soil. The concentration of Pb was similarly valued through both seasons in Seoul area but fine particles valued above coarse particles. On the other hand, in urban area, the natural and anthropogenic sources have influenced on the concentration of Pb. With referred to particle size distribution for Fe, the concentration of coarse particles was 0.168$\etag/m^3$ (CP/TA: 74.3%) in Spring with Yellow Sand, 0.096$\mug/m^3$ (CP/TA: 71.6%) without Yellow Sand and 0.083$\mug/m^3$ (CP/TA: 67.4%) in winter, respectively. Compared with fine particles, all of them were higher. It indicated that the origin of coarse particles in urban air was not related to anthropogenic source. The concentration of Fe was influenced by Yellow Sand and contributed to air pollution.
Portland cement concrete is made with coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, portland cement, water and, in some cases, selected chemical admixture such as air-entraining agents, water reducer, superplasticizer, and so on, and mineral admixture such as fly ash, silica fume, slags, etc. Typically, in the concrete, the coarse aggregate and fine aggregate will occupy approximately 80 percent of the total volume of the finished mixture. Therefore, the coarse and fine aggregates affect to the properties of the portland cement concrete. As the deposits of natural sands have slowly been depleted, it has become necessary and economical to produce crushed sand(manufactured fine aggregate). It is reported that crushed sand differs from natural sands in gradation, particle shape and texture, and that the content of micro fines in the crushed sand affect to the quality of the portland cement concrete. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the characteristics of fresh and hardened concrete with higher micro fines. This study provides a firm data to apply crushed sand with higher micro fines.

Particle size distribution of airborne suspended particulate concentrations according to particle size in the events of yellow sand phenomena, have been measured and analyzed by using Andersen air sampler for four years, January 1982 through December 1985. The conclusions are as follows: 1. Yellow sand phenomena, generally, occur between March and May. 2. The frequent occurrences of yellow sand were observed during March and April and airborne suspended particulate concentrations in the cases of yellow sand appeared to be 2 $\sim$ 3.4 times higher than those of normal conditions. 3. Geometric mean particle diameter and its geometric mean standard deviation by logarithmic normal distribution sheet, were quite close to each other and log-distribution curves showed similar shapes. 4. Analysis by particle size distribution curve showed bi-modal distribution. 5. Concentrations of coarse particles in normal conditions were 1.2 $\sim$ 2 times higher than those of fine particles and, similarly, coarse particle concentrations in yellow sand cases were 1.3 $\sim$ 2.5 times higher than those of fine particles. 6. Concentrations of coarse particles in yellow sand cases were 2 $\sim$ 3.6 times higher than those in normal conditions and those of fine particles were 1.7 $\sim$ 3.5 times higher.

This paper presents the results of laboratory investigation performed to study the role of different air sparging system parameters on the removal of benzene from saturated soils and groundwater. A series of one-dimensional experiments was conducted with predetermined contaminant concentrations and predetermined injected airflow rates and pressures to investigate the effect of soil type and the use of pulsed air injection on air sparging removal efficiency. On the basis of these studies, two-dimensional air sparging remediation systems were investigated to determine the effect of soil heterogeneity on the removal of benzene from three different homogeneous and heterogeneous soil profiles. This study demonstrated that the grain size of the soils affects the air sparging removal efficiency. Additionally, it was observed that pulsed air injection did not offer any appreciable enhancement to contaminant removal for the coarse sand; however, substantial reduction in system operating time was observed for fine sand. The 2-D experiments showed that air injected in coarse sand profiles traveled in channels within a parabolic zone. In well-graded sand the zone of influence was found to be wider due to high permeability and increased tortuosity of this soil type. The influence zone of heterogeneous soil (well-graded sand between coarse sand) showed the hybrid airflow patterns of the individual soil test. Overall, the mechanism of contaminant removal using air sparging from different soil conditions have been determined and discussed.
Product background of cement, sand and coarse aggregate differ from country to country, so that thermal behaviour of concrete make a difference in high temperature. To cope with demand, this paper is a study on compressive strength for W/C 45%, 55% and 65% by using domestic portland cement, Han-river sand, sea sand and crushed-coarse aggregate. As a result, it is shown that it is estimating to the mechanical properties of heated concrete specimens under various W/C ratio.
Recent research on the behavior of silty sand tends to advocate the use of equivalent skeleton void ratio to characterize the density state of this type of soil. This paper presents an investigation to explore the physical meaning of the equivalent skeleton void ratio by means of DEM simulations for assemblies of coarse and fine particles under biaxial shear. The simulations reveal that the distribution pattern of fine particles in the soil skeleton plays a crucial role in the overall macroscopic response: The contractive response observed at the macro scale is mainly caused by the movement of fine particles out of the force chains whereas the dilative response is mainly associated with the migration of fine particles into the force chains. In an assembly of coarse and fine particles, neither all of the fine particles nor all of the coarse ones participate in the force chains to carry the external loads, and therefore a more reasonable definition for equivalent skeleton void ratio is put forward in which a new parameter d is introduced to take into account the fraction of coarse particles absent from the force chains.
This study aimed at researching the process selection for two-stage and dual media filtration system, as a technology substituting the existing sand filter without expanding the site when retrofitting an old filter bed or designing a new one. In order to select the process for optimum complex filtration system, three running conditions have been tested. Test results demonstrated that Run 3 in which the 1st stage was filled with anthracite and coarse sand, and the 2nd stage was filled up with activated carbon and fine sand reduced the head loss and the load of turbidity substances. Also, Run 3 showed better performance in removing TOC, particle counts, THMFP and HAAFP, compared to other two conditions. 99 % of Cryptosporidium was removed. Bisphenol-A was rarely removed from the 1st stage of coarse sand and 2nd stage of fine sand, but 99 % of it was removed from the 2nd stage of activated carbon. In conclusion, when it is required to retrofit an old rapid filter bed or design a new one for the purpose of improving filtration performance, the following two-stage and dual media filtration system is suggested: the 1st stage of filter bed needs to be filled up with coarse sand to remove turbidity as the pretreatment for extending duration of filtering, the top part of 2nd stage needs to be filled up with granular activated caron to remove dissolved organic matters and others as the main process, and finally the bottom part of 2nd stage needs to be filled up with fine sand as the finishing process.

Mass and elemental dry deposition fluxes and ambient particle size distributions were measured using dry deposition plates and a cascade impactor, from March to November 1998 in Seoul, Korea. During the spring sampling period several yellow sand events characterized by long range transport from China and Mongolia impacted the area. During these events the mass fluxes were statistically the same as during springtime non-yellow-sand events. However, most elemental fluxes were higher. In general, the flux ratios of both crustal (Al, Ca, Mn) and anthropogenic elements (Ni, Pb) to total mass measured during the daytime yellow-sand events were substantially higher than those measured in spring daytime during non-yellow-sand time periods. During all seasons the average measured daytime fluxes were about two times higher than at nighttime. The flux of primarily anthropogenic metals (Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) and Mn was on average one to two orders of magnitude lower than the flux of the crustal metals Al and Ca. As is typically found two modes, fine (0.1∼l.0 $\mu\textrm{m}$) and coarse (1.0∼10.0 $\mu\textrm{m}$) were present in the measured size distributions (<10 $\mu\textrm{m}$). The particles in the coarse mode constitute a major portion of the measured mass size distribution during the yellow-sand events possibly due to the long-range transport of those particles from China.
Foam concrete can be considered as environmental friendly material due to its low weight, its minimal cost and a possibility to add waste materials in its production. This paper investigates the possibility of producing foam concrete with waste glass as powder and aggregate. Then, the effect of using waste glass on strength and drying shrinkage of foam concrete was examined. Also, the effect of incorporating polypropylene fibers (12 mm length and proportion of 0.5% of a mix volume) on distribution of waste glass as coarse particles within 1200 kg/m3 foam concrete mixes was evaluated. Waste glass was used as powder (20% of cement weight), as coarse particles (25%, 50% and 100% instead of sand volume) and as fine particles (25% instead of sand volume). From the results, the problem of non-uniform distribution of coarse glass particles was successfully solved by adding polypropylene fibers. It was found that using of waste glass as coarse aggregate led to reduce the strength of foam concrete mixes. However, using it with polypropylene fibers in combination helped in increasing the strength by about 29- 50% for compressive and 55- 71% for splitting tensile and reducing the drying shrinkage by about (31- 40%). In general, not only the fibers role but also the uniformly distributed coarse glass particles helped in improving and enhancing the strength and shrinkage of the investigated foam concrete mixes.
