  • In this study, the experiments on optimal CO gas synthesis were conducted using low grade coal-$CO_2$ catalyst gasification reaction. The characteristics of generated CO gas were investigated using the chemical activation method of KOH, $K_2CO_3$, $Na_2CO_3$ catalysts with Kideco and Shewha coal. The preparation process has been optimized through the analysis of experimental variables such as ratio between activating chemical agents and coal, the flow rate of gas and reaction temperature during $CO_2$ conversion reaction. The produced CO gas was analysed by Gas Chromatography (GC). The 98.6% $CO_2$ conversion for Kideco coal mixed with 20 wt% $Na_2CO_3$ and 98.9% $CO_2$ conversion for Shenhua coal mixed with 20 wt% KOH were obtained at the conditions of $T=950^{\circ}C$ and $CO_2$ flow rate of 100 cc/min. Also, the low grade coal-$CO_2$ catalytic gasification reaction showed the CO selectivities(97.8 and 98.8 %) at the same feed ratio and reaction conditions.

  • Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plant converts coal to syngas, which is mainly composed with hydrogen and carbon monoxide, by the gasification process and produces electric power by the gas and steam turbine combined cycle power plant. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of the syngas to the performance of a gas turbine in a combined cycle power plant. For this purpose, a commercial gas turbine is selected and its performance characteristics are analyzed with three different fuels, i.e., natural gas ($CH_4$), syngas and hydrogen. It is found that different heating values of those fuels and chemical compositions in their combustion gases are the causes in the different performance characteristics.

  • High temperature air blown gasification is new concept to utilize the waste heat from gasifier that is called the multi-staged enthalpy extraction technology. This process was developed to solve the economic problem due to air separation cost for the oxygen-blown as a gasifiying agent. In this study, we have performed the construction of pebble bed gasifier and operated it by controlling the pebble size and bed height. As a result, we can produce the syngas with the calorific value of 700kcal/$Nm^3$ at the condition of air temperature 650$^{\circ}C$.

  • Waste heat recovery process designs and performance analyses are conducted on the IGCC(Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle) power plants integrated with two different coal gasification and gas cleanup processes by Shell and GE/Texaco. Through the analysis results, the present study provides the steam integration concept between the HRSG and the chemical processes of IGCC power plant, and investigates the effect of steam integration on the power generation of IGCC power plant. The present simulation results show less steam power output and higher overall IGCC efficiency of the Shell-based power plant than the GE/Texaco.

  • IGCC (Integrated Coal Gasification Combined Cycle) is a technology that generates electric power using coal gasification and gasified fuel. Carbon conversion value of IGCC is higher and the influence on the environment is lower than the pulverized coal power plant. Especially, in the nations where the weight of fossil fuel for power generation is remarkably high like in Korea, IGCC stands out as an alternative plan to cope with sudden limitation for the emissions. In this paper, system design study for the commercial IGCC system which the introduction is imminent to Korea was performed. Two cases of entrained gasification process are adapted, one is FHR(full heat recovery) type IGCC system for high efficiency and the other is Quench type IGCC system for low cost. System simulations using common codes like AspenPlus were performed for each system. In the case of Quench system, system option study and sensitivity analysis of the air extraction rate was performed. Thermal performance result for the FHR system is 42.6% (HHV, Net) and for the quench system is 40% (HHV, net) when 75% air is extracted.

  • With the increasing amount of resources required by the society development, mining operations go deeper, which raises the requirements of studying the effects of temperature on the physical and mechanical properties of coal and adjacent rock. For now, these effects are yet to be fully revealed. In this paper, a mechanical-electromagnetic radiation (EMR) test system was established to understand the mechanical deterioration characteristics of coal by the effect of thermal treatment and its deformation and fracture characteristics under thermo-mechanical coupling conditions. The mechanical properties of high-temperature-treated coal were analyzed and recorded, based on which, reasons of coal mechanical deterioration as well as the damage parameters were obtained. Changes of the EMR time series under unconstrained conditions were further analyzed before characteristics of EMR signals under different damage conditions were obtained. The evolution process of thermal damage and deformation of coal was then analyzed through the frequency spectrum of EMR. In the end, based on the time-frequency variation characteristics of EMR, a method of determining combustion zones within the underground gasification area and combustion zones' stability level was proposed.

  • The gasification process has developed to convert coal into the more useful energy and material since decades. Despite the numberous design of ones, entrained flow gasifier of the major companies has had an advantage on the market. Because it has a merit of full-scale and high performance plant. In this paper, the gasification technologies of GE energy, Phillips, Siemens and Shell have been reviewed to compare their characteristics and a high performance gasification process was suggested. And the simulation model of gasifiers using Aspen Plus offered the quantitative comparison data for difference designs. The simulation results revealed the poor performance of the slurry feed than dry design. The corresponding cold gas efficiency of 77% is much lower than the 80.3% for the dry feed cases. The exergy analysis of the difference syngas quenching system showed that chemical quenching is superior to another. The results of analysis recommend the two stage gasifier with dry multi-feeder as the energy effective design.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate whether CGS generated in IGCC satisfies the fine aggregate quality items specified in KS F 2527(Concrete Aggregate) through the pretreatment process system and the quality improvement the system. The statistical significance of the pretreatment process was analyzed through Repeated Measurements ANOVA as measured values according to individually pretreatment process system. As a result of the analysis, In the case of CGS fine aggregate quality before and after the pretreatment process system, the density increased 5.2 %, the absorption rate decreased by 1.86 %, the 0.08 mm passing ratio decreased by 2.25 %, and Fineness Modulus and Particle-size Distribution were also found to be adjustable. It was found that the pretreatment process system was significant in improving the quality of CGS.

  • A numerical study was carried out to analyze the effect of flow distribution of stirred part and plug flow part on combustion efficiency at the coal gasification process in an entrained bed coal reactor. The model of computation was based on gas phase eulerian balance equations of mass and momentum. The solid phase was described by lagrangian equations of motion. The $k-{\varepsilon}$ model was used to calculate the turbulence flow and eddy dissipation model was used to describe the gas phase reaction rate. The radiation was solved using a Monte-Carlo method. One-step parallel two reaction model was employed for the devolatilization process of a high volatile bituminous Kideco coal. The computations agreed well with the experiments, but the flame front was closer to the burner than the measured one. The flow distribution of a stirred part and a plug flow part in a reactor was a function of the magnitude of recirculation zone resulted from the swirl. The combustion efficiency was enhanced with decreasing stirred part and the maximum value was found around S=1.2, having the minimum stirred part. The combustion efficiency resulted from not only the flow distribution but also the particle residence time through the hot reaction zone of the stirred part, in particular for the weak swirl without IRZ(internal recirculation zone) and the long lifted flame.
