Considering the importance of the detailed resolution of the reacting flow field inside a gasifier, the objective of this study lies on to investigate the effect of important variables to influence on the reacting flow and thereby to clarify the physical feature occurring inside the gasifier using a comprehensive gasifier computer program. Thus, in this study the gasification process of a 1.0 ton/day gasifier are numerically modeled using the Fluent code. And parametric investigation has been made in terms of swirl intensity and aspect ratio of the gasifier. Doing this, special attention is given on the detailed change of the reacting flow field inside a gasifier especially with the change of this kind of design and operation parameters. Based on this study, a number of useful conclusions can be drawn in the view of flow pattern inside gasifier together with the consequence of the gasification process caused by the change of the flow pattern. Especially, swirl effect gives rise to a feature of a central delayed recirculation zone, which is different from the typical strong central recirculation appeared near the inlet nozzle. The delayed feature of central recirculation appearance could be explained by the increased axial momentum due to the substantial amount of the presence of the coal slurry occupying over the entire gasifier in gasification process. Further, the changes of flow pattern are explained in detail with the gasifier aspect ratio. In general, the results obtained are physically acceptable in parametric study.
With the increase in the application of CLSM using coal ash, we performed a basic research on CLSM material, laying focus on the correlation between compressive strength and unit weight of lightweight foamed CLSM. The unconfined compression strength is a criterion for the judgment of the possibility of re-excavation and an important factor determining the economy, efficiency, and excavation character. However, to know the quantitative compression strength value takes a certain amount of time, because the applicability of unconfined compression strength of CLSM is judged by the standard of 28days. Therefore, in this study the relation between compressive strength and unit weight (foam slurry unit weight, apparent unit weight) is analyzed focusing on lightweight foamed CLSM. We also suggested a formula which can easily predict the 28-day compressive strength only using unit weight value without the need to cure the slurry for 28 days.
Prediction of the maximum packing volume fraction with non-spherical particles has been one of the important problems in powder technology. The sphericity of fly ash particles depending on the particle diameter was measured by means of a CCD image processing instrument. An algorithm to predict the maximum packing volume fraction with non-spherical particles is proposed. The maximum packing volume fraction is used to predict the slurry viscosity under well dispersed conditions. For this purpose, Simha's cell model is applied for concentrated slurry with wide particle size distribution. Also, Usui's model developed for aggregative slurries is applied to predict the non-Newtonian viscosity of dense fly ash - water slurry. It is certified that the maximum packing volume fraction for non-spherical particles can be successfully used to predict slurry viscosity. The pressure drop in a pipe flow is predicted by using the non-Newtonian viscosity of dense fly ash-water slurry obtained by the present model. The predicted relationship between pressure drop and flow rate results in a good agreement with the experimented data obtained for a test rig with 50 mm inner diameter tube. Base on the design procedure proposed in this study, a feasibility study of fly ash hydraulic transportation system from a coal-fired power station to a controlled deposit site is carried out to give a future prospect of inexpensive fly ash transportation technology.

In a direct coal fuel cell (DCFC) system, it is essential to identify volume fraction of coal suspended in electrolyte melt in order to control its dispersion and fluidity. This requirement is compelling especially at anode channel where hot slurry is likely to flow at low velocity. In this study, light scattering techniques were employed to measure the volume fraction for a pulverized coal suspension with relatively high absorption coefficient. The particle size, scattering angle, and volume fraction were varied to evaluate their effects on the scattering behavior as well as scattering regime. The larger coal size and smaller forward scattering angle could provide a shift to more favorable scattering regime, i.e., independent scattering, where interferences of light scattering from one particle with others are suppressed.

The ignition and combustion characteristics of CWS droplets were investigated in the postflame region generated by a flat burner. The effect of radiation by screen and heating eleements ws taken into account. Also the theoretical claculations considering the temporal temeprature variation have been performed and compared with experimental results. The ignition delays were reduced by the radiation of the screen or heating elements. Therfore the radiation was considered to play some role in predicting the ignition delay.
This study was carried out to remove the water from low grade anthracite slurry produced at Eoryong coal mine by the oil agglomeration process. 80% of Anthracite as a coal oil mixture (COM) was separated from water by the difference of specific gravity. Then, the amount of kerosene, diesel oil, and heavy oil forming COM was 10% of the amount of sample, respectively. The recovery rate of combustibles and ash content of agglomerated anthracite were affected largely by the amount of added oil, pulp density, particle size, mixing time, and impeller speed. The recovery rate of combustibles was increased to 95% and ash content was decrea-sed from 30% to 13.5% under the optimum conditions.

In Korea, hundreds of abandoned and closed coal and metallic mines are present in the steep mountain valleys due to the depression of the mining industry since the late 1980s. From these mines, enormous amounts of coal waste were dumped on the slopes, which causes sedimentation and acid mine drainage (AMD) to be discharged directly into streams causing detrimental effects on soil and water environments. A limestone slurry by-product (lime cake) is produced from the Solvay process in manufacturing soda ash. It has very fine particles, low hydraulic conductivities ($10^{-8}{\sim}10^{-9}cm/sec$), high pH, high EC due to the presence of CaO, MgO and $CaCl_2$ as major components, and traces of heavy metals. Due to these properties, it has potential to be used as a neutralizer for acid-producing materials. A field plot experiment was used to test the application of lime cake for reclaiming coal wastes. Each plot was 20 x 5 m (L x W) in size on a 56% slope. Treatments included a control (waste only), calcite ($CaCO_3$), and lime cake. The lime requirement (LR) for the coal waste to pH 7.0 was determined and treatments consisted of adding 100%, 50%, and 25% of the LR. The lime cake and calcite were also applied in either a layer between the coal waste and topsoil or mixed into the topsoil and coal waste. Each plot was hydroseeded with grasses and planted with trees. In each plot, surface runoff and subsurface water were collected. The lime cake treatments increased the pH of coal waste from 3.5 to 6, and neutralized the pH of the runoff and leachate of the coal waste from 4.3 to 6.7.
Fly ashes derived from coal fired power plants have unique chemical and mineralogical characteristics. The objective of this research was to study how indigenous bacteria affected heavy metal leaching in fly ash slurry during the fly ash-seawater interactions in the ash pond located in Yeongdong seashore, Korea. The in-situ pH of ash pond seawater was 6.3-8.5. For this study, three sites of the ash pond were chosen to collect a sample of fly ash slurry. Three samples that had a mix of fly ash (0.4 L) and seawater (1.6 L) were collected at each site. First sample was autoclaved ($120^{\circ}C$, 2.5 atm), second one was inoculated with glucose to stimulate the microbial activity, and the last sample was kept in the natural condition. Compared with other samples including autoclaved and natural samples, the glucose added sample showed sharp increase in its alkalinity after 15 days, cation concentration change such as Ca, Mg, and K seemed to increase in early stage, and then decrease 15 days later in slurry solution of glucose added sample, and a possibly considerable decrease in $SO_4^{2-}$ in the fly ash slurry samples when glucose was added to stimulate the microbial activity. Geochemical data of this study is likely to be related to the activity of bacteria at the ash pond. The result may be used to understand about the characteristic of bacteria.
In this study, soil slurry bioreactors were used to treat soils containing 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) for 35 days. Five different soil samples were taken from manufactured gas plant (MGP) and coal tar disposal sites. Soil properties, such as carbon content and particle distribution, were measured. These properties were significantly correlated with percent biodegradation and degradation rate. The cumulative amount of PAH degraded (P), degradation rate (Km), and lag phase (𝜆) constants of PAHs in different MGP soils for 16 PAHs were successfully obtained from nonlinear regression analysis using the Gompertz equation, but only those of naphthalene, anthracene, acenaphthene, fluoranthene, chrysene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, benzo(a)pyrene, and benzo(g,h,i)perylene are presented in this study. A comparison between total non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic PAHs indicated higher maximum amounts of PAH degraded in the former than that in the latter owing to lower partition coefficients and higher water solubilities (S). The degradation rates of total non-carcinogenic compounds for all soils were more than four times higher than those of total carcinogenic compounds. Carcinogenic PAHs have the highest partitioning coefficients (Koc), resulting in lower bioavailability as the molecular weight (MW) increases. Good linear relationships of Km, 𝜆, and P with the octanol-water partitioning coefficient (Kow), MW, and S were used to estimate PAH remaining, lag time, and biodegradation rate for other PAHs.

CLSM (Controlled Low Strength Material) using coal ash, which has the advantages of self-leveling, self-compacting, flowability, easy re-excavation, has been developed. In this study, CLSM additionally mixed with foaming agent for structural backfill material, aimed at lightness of materials, was developed called light-weight foamed CLSM. As the basic study of this material, to determine the optimum final mixing time and dilution ratio of existing light-weight foamed CLSM, flow, slurry unit weight and unconfined compressive strength test according to each impact factor were performed at the standard mix proportion. As the results of tests, CASE N (Final mixing time 4 min, dilution ratio 2%), CASE O (Final mixing time 3 min, foam agents ratio 3%, dilution ratio 2%) were satisfied with the standard of flow test (above 20cm), slurry unit weight test (12~15 $kN/m^3$) and unconfined compressive strength test (800 kPa~1200 kPa). These results will indicate the standard optimum final mixing time and dilution ratio of light-weight foamed CLSM for structural backfill.
