A Zr-based amorphous alloy specimen was produced by vacuum die casting process. The salt spray test was carried out using the specimens in the as-cast, $Al_2O_3$ and $ZrO_2$ particle blasted state. Using these specimens, the SEM-EDX and XRD analyses, DSC measurement and bending strength test were conducted. After the salt spray test, the specimens were not experienced phase change and thermal characteristics of the alloys were remained unchanged. In the as-cast specimen, corrosion products were not observed. However, in the $Al_2O_3$ particle blasted specimen, pitting corrosion occurred and the detected corrosion products were $ZrCl_2$ and $NaZrO_3$. Due to the salt spray test, bending strength of the $Al_2O_3$ blasted specimens showed about 100 MPa lower strength than the other specimens. The bending fracture surface was vein pattern which was shown typically in the amorphous alloys.

Strong metal-support interaction effect is an important issue in determining the catalytic activity for heterogeneous catalysis. In this work, we report the catalytic activity of $Au/TiO_2$, $Au/Al_2O_3$, and $Au/Al_2O_3-CeO_2$ nanocatalysts under CO oxidation fabricated by arc plasma deposition (APD), which is a facile dry process with no organic materials involved. These catalytic materials were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and $N_2$-physisorption. Catalytic activity of the materials has measured by CO oxidation using oxygen, as a model reaction, in a micro-flow reactor at atmospheric pressure. Using APD, the catalyst nanoparticles were well dispersed on metal oxide powder with an average particle size (3~10 nm). As for catalytic reactivity, the result shows $Au/Al_2O_3-CeO_2$ nanocatalyst has the highest catalytic activity among three samples in CO oxidation, and $Au/TiO_2$, and $Au/Al_2O_3$ in sequence. We discuss the effects of structure and metal-oxide interactions of the catalysts on catalytic activity.

Sediment trap samples were collected to find out characteristic behaviors of metals in the settling particles by using time-series sediment traps at 678m and 1678m water depths in the Bransfield Strait from December 27th, 1999 to December 26th, 2000. Total mass fluxes at the intermediate water depth (678m water depth) were high in the austral summer and low in the austral winter, whereas at the deep water depth (1678m water depth) they showed high values in both the summer and winter. Total mass fluxes were generally higher in the deep water depth than in the intermediate water depth, which indicates that a substantial amount of sediments are laterally transported by strong currents into the deep basin from the shallow water depths. Aluminium contents also showed large seasonal variations with high values in the winter and low values in the summer. On the contrary, organic carbon contents were high in the summer and low in the winter. Al contents were negatively correlated with organic carbon contents, which may be ascribed that detrital particles are diluted by organic matter produced by phytoplankton in the surface waters. Metals measured in this study exhibited three characteristic behaviors; 1) a positive correlation with Al-Ti, Fe, Mn, V, Co, and Ba, 2) a negative correlation with Al-Cd and Zn, 3) no relationship with Al-Sr, Cu, Cr, Ni. Terrestrial materials may act as a major source fer metals that are positively correlated with Al, and organic matter may be a major source for metals that are negatively correlated with Al. Enrichment factor (EF) of Fe, Mn, Ba, Vi Co, Sr, Cr, and Ni ranged from 0.5 to 1.5, whereas EF of Zn, Cu, and Cd showed much higher values than 1.
A promising candidate material for a $H_2$ permeable membrane is SiC due to its many unique properties. A hydrogen-selective SiC membrane was successfully fabricated on the outer surface of an intermediate multilayer $\gamma-Al_2O_3$ with a graded structure. The $\gamma-Al_2O_3$ multilayer was formed on top of a macroporous $\alpha-Al_2O_3$ support by consecutively dipping into a set of successive solutions containing boehmite sols of different particle sizes and then calcining. The boehmite sols were prepared from an aluminum isopropoxide precursor and heated to $80^{\circ}C$ with high speed stirring for 24 hrs to hydrolyze the precursor. Then the solutions were refluxed at $92^{\circ}C$ for 20 hrs to form a boehmite precipitate. The particle size of the boehmite sols was controlled according to various experimental parameters, such as acid types and acid concentrations. The topmost SiC layer was formed on top of the intermediate $\gamma-Al_2O_3$ by pyrolysis of a SiC precursor, polycarbosilane, in an Ar atmosphere. The resulting amorphous SiC-on-$Al_2O_3$ composite membrane pyrolyzed at $900^{\circ}C$ possessed a high $H_2$ permeability of $3.61\times10^{-7}$$mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}{\cdot}Pa^{-1}$ and the $H_2/CO_2$ selectivity was much higher than the theoretical value of 4.69 in all permeation temperature ranges. Gas permeabilities through a SiC membrane are affected by Knudsen diffusion and a surface diffusion mechanism, which are based on the molecular weight of gas species and movement of adsorbed gas molecules on the surface of the pores.

Electrochemical hydrogenation/dehydrogenation properties were studied for a single particle of a Mm-based(Mm : misch metal) hydrogen storage alloy($MmNi_{3.55}Co_{0.75}Mn_{0.4}Al_{0.3}$) for the anode of Ni-MH batteries. A carbon fiber microelectrode was manipulated to make electrical contact with an alloy particle, and the cyclic voltammetry and the galvanostatic charge/discharge experiments were performed. A single particle of the alloy showed the discharge capacity of 280[mAh/g], the value being 90[%] of the theoretical capacity. Data were compared with that of the composite film consisting of the alloy particles and a polymer binder, which is more practical form for Ni-MH batteries. Additionally, pulverization of the alloy particles are directly observed. Compared with the conventional composite film electrodes, the single particle measurements using the microelectrode gave more detailed, true information about the hydrogen storage alloy.
Electrochemical properties were studied for a single particle of active material of hydrogen storage alloy $(MmNi_{3.55}Co_{0.75}Mn_{0.4}Al_{0.3})$ and nickel hydroxides $(NiOH)_2$ for the secondary Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) batteries using the microelectrode, which was manipulated to make electrical contact with an active material particle for cyclic voltammograms (CV) and potential-step experiments. As a result of CV test, it was found that three kinds of hydrogen oxidation peaks at -0.9, -0.75 and -0.65 V and hydrogen evolution peak at -0.98 V for hydrogen storage alloy were separately observed and two kinds of peaks of proton oxidation/reduction at 0.45 and 0.32 V and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at 0.6 V for nickel hydroxides were also more clearly observed. Furthermore hydrogen diffusion coefficient within a single particle was also found to vary the order between $10^{-9}\;and\;10^{-10}cm^2/s$ over the course of hydrogenation and dehydrogenation process for potential-step experiments.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of different surface treatment methods and thermal ageing on the bond strength of autopolymerizing acrylic resin to Co-Cr. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Co-Cr alloy specimens were divided into five groups according to the surface conditioning methods. C: No treatment; SP: flamed with the Silano-Pen device; K: airborne particle abrasion with $Al_2O_3$; Co: airborne particle abrasion with silica-coated $Al_2O_3$; KSP: flamed with the Silano-Pen device after the group K experimental protocol. Then, autopolymerized acrylic resin was applied to the treated specimen surfaces. All the groups were divided into two subgroups with the thermal cycle and water storage to determine the durability of the bond. The bond strength test was applied in an universal test machine and treated Co-Cr alloys were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine the significant differences among surface treatments and thermocycling. Their interactons were followed by a multiple comparison' test performed uing a post hoc Tukey HSD test (${\alpha}=.05$). RESULTS. Surface treatments significantly increased repair strengths of repair resin to Co-Cr alloy. The repair strengths of Group K, and Co significantly decreased after 6,000 cycles (P<.001). CONCLUSION. Thermocycling lead to a significant decrease in shear bond strength for air abrasion with silica-coated aluminum oxide particles. On the contrary, flaming with Silano-Pen did not cause a significant reduction in adhesion after thermocycling.

The present paper focuses on the fabrication of materials with higher thermal conductivity. Nanofluid is a novel transfer prepared by dispersing nanometer-sized solid particles in traditional heat transfer fluid to increase thermal conductivity and heat transfer performance. The purpose of this study is making the nano-size particle. The experiment of MWCNT and $Al_2O_3$ was carried out using a planetary ball mill at several rotation speeds: 200 ~ 400 rpm. The results were examined using scanning electron microscope(SEM). In the case of the MWCNT, it could be more grinding into the small particle in the dry condition and it confirm in the case of the $Al_2O_3$ to be more grinding into the small particle contrary to the MWCNT in the wet condition. In the mixture grinding result of MWCNT and $Al_2O_3$, the dry condition showed the good result in low rotation speed than the wet condition.

Char oxidation experiments were performed with a sub-bituminous roto-middle coal in the Drop Tube Furnace (DTF) at atmospheric pressure condition. While temperatures varied between 900, 1100, 1400 $^{\circ}C$, particle size, mass, particle temperature, and CO/$CO_2$ concentration were obtained to be used for kinetic analysis of the char oxidation. This study addresses several different methods to analyze the char consumption rate, which are classified as energy balance method, ash-traced mass method, flue-gas based method, and particle size based method. The char consumption rate obtained with such methods was compared with the results of Monson et al.$^{(24)}$ While there are some differences between them because of differences in experimental apparatus and parameters to be measured, the kinetic results seems to be reasonable enough to be incorporated in a numerical modeling of coal combustion.
The creep rates of polycrystalline $L1_2$-ordered $Co_3Ti$ and B2-ordered NiAl-Hf intermetallics decrease appreciably with the fine precipitation of the coherent disordered fcc Co-rich phase and $Ni_2AlHf$ phase. With B2-ordered NiAl containing $L2_1-Ni_2AlHf$ precipitates, transmission electron microscope observations of the interaction between dislocations and spherical precipitates revealed that the dislocations tend to be strongly attracted to the particle interfaces during the creep deformation. On the other hand, with $L1_2$-ordered $Co_3Ti$, the significance of the threshold stress is discussed based upon the transmission electron microscope observations of the interaction between dislocations and precipitates. The superdislocations produced during deformation tend to be strongly attracted and dissociated as they meet the coherent disordered precipitates because the anti-phase boundary energy in the disordered phase was zero. An extra force required to pull the dislocations out of the disordered particles during the creep deformation establishes the threshold stress which is beneficial for improving creep strength under lower stresses.
