  • This study intended to analyze the health promoting behaviors by comparing various factors according to the residence areas(Korea or Japan) of Korean Elderly. and to present basic data in planning systematic and effective programs of health promotion for each residence area. The subjects of this study were 164 Korean elders in Daegu, South Korea, and 164 elders in Aichi prefecture, Japan. Data was collected by interviews and self-administered questionnaires from the 1st to the 20th of April in 2000. The tool for this study was based on Walker et al.(1987)'s Health Promotion lifestyle Profiles (HPLP). The analysis was performed with Cronbach's $x^2-test$, t-test. ANCOVA, Kendal tau, Pearson correlation, and Stepwise Multiple Regression test using SPSS program. The results are as follows: 1. There was a significant difference in occupation($x^2$=41.3. p=0.000), the source of the pocket money($x^2$=114.36. p=0.000) by the residence areas in terms of socio-demographic characteristics. 2. There was a significant difference between the two groups on the health promoting behaviors(t=-8.19. p=0.000). The score of elders group in the South Korean group on health promoting behaviors was 2.32. showing 0.33 lower than that of the elders group in Japan(2.65). 3. ANCOVA involving occupation and the source of pocket money as co-variables. showed significant differences (F=15.37. p=0.000) regarding health promoting behaviors according to the residence areas. 4. In consideration of variables that have an influence on health promoting behavior by residence areas, pocket money occupied 11.5% of health promoting behavior in the elders group in South Korea. In the elders group in Japan, pocket money occupied 18.1% of health promoting behavior and 20.6% including education. The suggestions based on the results of this study are as follows.: 1. It is necessary to develop health promoting programs considering the residence areas of Korean elders. 2. It is necessary to develop social programs for improving the education level and solving pocket money problems, which are the significant factors for the health promoting behavior of Korean elders.

  • Antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAb) is the important serological marker of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Conventionally, the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) obtained from the plasma of HBV carriers is used as the diagnostic antigen for detection of HBsAb. This blood-origin antigen has some disadvantages involved in high cost, over-elaborate preparation, risk of infection, et al. In an attempt to explore the suitable recombinant HBsAg for the diagnostic purpose, the HBV S gene was expressed in Pichia pastoris and the product was applied for detection of HBsAb. Hepatitis B virus S gene was inserted into the yeast vector and the expressed product was analyzed by sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrolamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), immunoblot, electronic microscope and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The preparations of synthesized S protein were applied to detect HBsAb by sandwich ELISA. The S gene encoding the 226 amino acid of HBsAg carrying ahexa-histidine tag at C terminus was successfully expressed in Pichia pastoris. The His-Tagged S protein in this strain was expressed at a level of about 14.5% of total cell protein. Immunoblot showed the recombinant HBsAg recognized by monoclonal HBsAb and there was no cross reaction between all proteins from the host and normal sera. HBsAb detection indicated that the sensitivity reached 10 mIu (micro international unit)/ml and the specificity was 100% with HBsAb standard of National Center for Clinical Laboratories. A total of 293 random sera were assayed using recombinant S protein and a commercial HBsAb ELISA kit (produced by blood-origin HBsAg), 35 HBsAb positive sera and 258 HBsAb negative sera were examined. The same results were obtained with two different reagents and there was no significant difference in the value of S/CO between the two reagents. The recombinant HBV S protein with good immunoreactivity and specificity was successfully expressed in Pichia pastoris. The reagent for HBsAb detection prepared by Pichia pastoris-derived S protein showed high sensitivity and specificity for detection of HBsAb standard. And a good correlation was obtained between the reagent produced by recombinant S protein and commercial kit produced by blood-origin HBsAg in random samples.

  • The main field component of the Earth's magnetic field was modeled from the tri-axial magnetometer onboard KOrean MultiPurpose SATellite-II (KOMPSAT-II) for the purpose of satellite attitude control. The model computed by the KOMPSAT-II magnetometer measurement data is compared with the International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF) model of a degree of up to 13 in spherical harmonic coefficients. The previous study with KOMPSAT-I (Kim et al. 2004) indicated a good correlation of power spectrum of spherical harmonic coefficients with respect to the degree up to 5. This study, however, showed an agreement of the degree up to 8-9 of the coefficient power spectrum and a discrepancy between degrees 10 and 13. We have concluded that relevant data selection process, removal of the external field from the data in the high latitude region, an accuracy of the magnetometer all play an important role in finding a coherence with the IGRF model. This study will be extended to the secular variation model of geomagnetism if longer-period data become available.

  • The maximum breathing capacity (MBC) and the maximum mid-expiratory flow rate (MMF) are widely used in evaluation of the ventilatory function, among various parameters of pulmonary function. The MBC volume is the amount of gas which can be exchanged per unit time during maximal voluntary hyperventilation. Performance of this test, unlike that of single breath maneuvers, is affected by the integrity of the respiratory bellows as a whole including such factors are respiratory muscle blood supply, fatigue, and progressive trapping of air. Because of this, the MBC and its relation to ventilatory requirement correlates more closely with subjective dyspnea than does any other test. The MMF is the average flow rate during expiration of the middle 50% of the vital capacity. The MMF is a measurement of a fast vital capacity related to the time required for the maneuver and the MMF relates much better to other dynamic tests of ventilatory function and to dyspnea than total vital capacity, because the MMF reflects the effective volume, or gas per unit of time. Therefore, it is important to have a prediction formula with one can compute the normal value for the subject and the compare with the measured value. However, the formulas for prediction of both MBC and MMF of the Korean children and adolescents are not yet available in the present. Hence, present investigation was attempt to derive the formulas for prediction of both MBC and MMF of the Korean children and adolescents. MBC and MMF were measured in 1,037 healthy Korean children and adolescents (1,035 male and 1,002 female) whose ages ranged from 8 to 18 years. A spirometer (9L, Collins) was used for the measurement of MBC and MMF. Both MBC and MMF were measured 3times in a standing position and the highest values were used. For measurement, the $CO_2$ absorber and sadd valve were removed from the spirometer in order to reduce the resistance in the breathing circuit and the subject was asked to breathe as fast and deeply as possible for 12 seconds in MBC and to exhale completely as fast as possible after maximum inspiration for MMF. During the measurement, investigator stood by the subject to give a constant encouragement. All the measured values were subsequently converted to values at BTPS. The formulas for MBC and MMF were derived by a manner similar to those for Baldwin et al (1949) and Im (1965) as function of age and BSA or age and height. The prediction formulas for MBC (L/min, BTPS) and MMF (L/min, BTPS) of the Korean children and adolescents as derived in this investigation are as follows: For male, MBC=[41.70+{$2.69{\times}Age(years)$}]${\times}BSA$ $(m^{2})$ MBC=[0.083+{$0.045{\times}Age(years)$}]${\times}Ht$ (cm) For female, MBC=[45.53+{$1.55{\times}Age(years)$}]${\times}BSA$ $(m^2)$ MBC=[0.189+{$0.029{\times}Age(years)$}]${\times}Ht$ (cm) For male, MMF= [0.544+{$0.066{\times}Age(years)$}]${\times}Ht$ (cm) For female, MMF=[0.416+{$0.064{\times}Age(years)$}]${\times}Ht$ (cm)

  • Behavior of trace metals in Masan Bay, Korea was studied in August 1998 when the oxygen deficient condition occurred. Dissolved Cd and Zn concentration in the surface waters decreased with increasing distance from Masan Harbor. Dissolved concentrations of Cd, Cu Pb and Zn in the surface waters were higher than bottom waters. Particulate(acid-teachable fraction) concentrations of Cu, Cd and Pb in the surface waters of Masan Bay decreased with increasing distance from Masan Harbor. Bottom waters contained higher concentrations of particulate Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn than surface waters. Distribution coefficients between dissolved and particulate phase (K/sub d/) of Cu and Cd decreased with the increasing distance from the Harbor, possibly due to reaction of these elements with sewage-derived particulate matter Al, Zn, Cu, Cd, and Pb in the surface sediment showed relatively high concentration in the inner Masan Bay.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of policy in Jeju, using a macro-economic forecasting model of Jeju. First, the model's reality explanatory power improved by updating its statistics to 2017 and expanding new policy variables and modules. Also, the industrial structure of the model was further subdivided and extended to be considered simultaneously in the demand side of Keynesian theory. Second, it was determined that the predictive power for the model of this study was better than that of the existing model. However, with some endogenous variables, it was possible to identify implications that should be developed and considered when the model is improved with additional data in the future. Third, when the second airport construction was considered, it was observed that its effect was an increase of 1.25 times for GRDP, 1.2 times for employment, 1.48 times for private consumption, and 2.06 times for investment. Also, the economic growth rate was estimated to be 1.6% point higher than when the second airport was not constructed. Finally, the results of this study are expected to be used for policy decision making of the Jeju Government.

  • Leaching of CMSX-4 superalloy was done in hydrochloric acid solutions. The leaching behaviors of main alloy components, such as Ni, Co, Cr, Al, was investigated by controlling acid concentration, temperature, leaching time and pulp density. Increasing acid concentration enhanced the leaching rate till the rate decreased over 3 M acid concentration. Raising temperature increased the leaching amount of the metal components. After the leaching for 60 minutes at $90^{\circ}C$ and 10 g/L pulp density in 4 M acid solution, 93.2% nickel, 89.9% aluminum, 80.4% cobalt, and 79.1% chromium were leached. Nickel and aluminum were preferentially leached out, while the leaching rate of cobalt and chromium were relatively high only after 60 minutes, Increasing pulp density lowered the leaching rate and especially serious on cobalt and chromium, The optimum leaching condition for CMSX-4 was obtained at $90^{\circ}C$, 120 minutes, and less than 125 g/L in 4 M hydrochloric acid solution.

  • New PPV derivatives which contain electron-withdrawing CF3F4phenyl group, poly[2-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-5-(2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-trifluoromethylphenyl)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (CF3F4P-PPV), and poly[2-(4-(2-etylhexyloxy)-phenyl)-5-(2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-trifluoromethylphenyl)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (P-CF3F4P-PPV), have been synthesized by GILCH polymerization. As the result of the introduction of the electron-withdrawing CF3F4phenyl group to the phenyl backbone, the LUMO and HOMO energy levels of CF3F4P-PPV (3.14, 5.50 eV) and P-CF3F4P-PPV (3.07, 5.60 eV) were reduced. The PL emission spectra in solid thin film are more red-shifted over 50 nm and increased fwhm (full width at half maximum) than solution conditions by raising aggregation among polymer backbone due to electron withdrawing effect of 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-trifluoromethylphenyl group. The EL emission maxima of CF3F4P-PPV and P-CF3F4P-PPV appear at around 530-543 nm. The current density-voltage-luminescence (J-V-L) characteristics of ITO/PEDOT/polymer/Al devices of CF3F4P-PPV and P-CF3F4P-PPV show that turn-on voltages are around 12.5 and 7.0 V, and the maximum brightness are about 82 and 598 cd/m2, respectively. The maximum EL efficiency of P-CF3F4P-PPV (0.51 cd/A) was higher than that of CF3F4P-PPV (0.025 cd/A).

  • Four commercial alumina powders having different particle size of $0.5{\mu}m,\;2.8{\mu}m,\;12{\mu}m,\;and\;45{\mu}m$ were presintered at 1120$^{\circ}C$ for 2h and then lanthanum aluminosilicate glass was infiltrated at 1100$^{\circ}C$ for 2h in the interval of 0.1h to investigate the penetration kinetic of the glass into the alumina preforms. The infiltration distance is parabolic with respect to time as described by the Washburn equation and the penetration rate constant, K, increases with raising the alumina particle size. The strength of glass-alumina composites increases as the alumina particle size reaches to 2.8${\mu}m$ due to the increase in packing, however, decreases with further increasing the alumina particle size. The fracture toughness of the composites rises with increasing the alumina particle size due to the crack bowing and the interaction between crack and alumina particles.

  • A new deformation of reinforcing bar in coils was proposed to improve a machinability of straightening process, which has crescent-shaped transverse ribs with an inclination angle of 50 degrees, a crest width of $0.15d_b$, and a flank inclination of 55 degrees. The proposed deformation can increase contact area between a surface of re-bar and a groove of a roller during a straightening process and, therefore, it might reduce a damage of ribs, improve a final straightness, and enhance an efficiency of the straightening process. Splice tests were conducted to evaluate bond strengths of three types of re-bar in coils including the proposed re-bar, of which the inclination angles of transverse ribs were 50, 60, and 90 degrees, respectively. Test results show that the re-bars in coils have higher bond strengths than predicted strengths by equations of Orangun et al., ACI 408, and KCI by at least 10%. Correlation coefficients of bond strengths between a straight bar and re-bars in coils are 0.94 and more. Consequently, equations of the KCI code for determining development and splice lengths can be applied to the tested re-bars in coils.
