Image co-registration is the process of overlaying two images of the same scene. One of which is a reference image, while the other (sensed image) is geometrically transformed to the one. Numerous methods were developed for the automated image co-registration and it is known as a time-consuming and/or computation-intensive procedure. In order to improve efficiency and effectiveness of the co-registration of satellite imagery, this paper proposes a pre-qualified area matching, which is composed of feature extraction with Laplacian filter and area matching algorithm using correlation coefficient. Moreover, to improve the accuracy of co-registration, the outliers in the initial matching point should be removed. For this, two outlier detection techniques of studentized residual and modified RANSAC algorithm are used in this study. Three pairs of Landsat images were used for performance test, and the results were compared and evaluated in terms of robustness and efficiency.

This study compares transformation algorithms for co-registration of terrestrial laser scan data. Pair-wise transformation which is used for transformation of scan data from more than two different view accumulates errors. ICP algorithm commonly used for co-registration between scan data needs initial geometry information. And it is difficult to co-register simultaneously because of too many control points when managing scan at the same time. Therefore, this study perform global registration technique using matching points. Matching points are extracted automatically from intensity image by SIFT and global registration is performed using GP analysis. There are advantages for operation speed, accuracy, automation in suggested global registration algorithm. Through the result from it, registration algorithms can be developed by considering accuracy and speed.

The aim of this study is to propose a fine co-registration approach for multi-temporal satellite images acquired from RapidEye, which has an advantage of availability for time-series analysis. To this end, we generate multitemporal ortho-rectified images using RPCs (Rational Polynomial Coefficients) provided with RapidEye images and then perform fine co-registration between the ortho-rectified images. A DEM (Digital Elevation Model) extracted from the digital map was used to generate the ortho-rectified images, and the RNCC (Registration Noise Cross Correlation) was applied to conduct the fine co-registration. Experiments were carried out using 4 RapidEye 1B images obtained from May 2015 to November 2016 over the Yeonggwang area. All 5 bands (blue, green, red, red edge, and near-infrared) that RapidEye provided were used to carry out the fine co-registration to show their possibility of being applicable for the co-registration. Experimental results showed that all the bands of RapidEye images could be co-registered with each other and the geometric alignment between images was qualitatively/quantitatively improved. Especially, it was confirmed that stable registration results were obtained by using the red and red edge bands, irrespective of the seasonal differences in the image acquisition.

This study analyzed how the accuracy of co-registration varies depending on the convergence angles between two KOMPSAT-3·3A images. Most very-high-resolution satellite images provide initial coordinate information through metadata. Since the search area for performing image co-registration can be reduced by using the initial coordinate information, in this study, the mutual information method showing high matching reliability in the small search area is used. Initial coarse co-registration was performed by using multi-spectral images with relatively low resolution, and precise fine co-registration was conducted centering on the region of interest of the panchromatic image for more accurate co-registration performance. The experiment was conducted by 120 combination of 16 KOMPSAT-3·3A 1G images taken in Daejeon area. Experimental results show that a correlation coefficient between the convergence angles and fine co-registration errors was 0.59. In particular, we have shown the larger the convergence angle, the lower the accuracy of co-registration performance.

With recent advancement of remote sensing technology, a variety of data acquisition over the same area is achievable. An automated co-registration of heterogeneous airborne images is a critical step for change detection. This paper describes an automatic method for co-registration between digital image and existing building model. Optimal building models for co-registration purpose are extracted as primitives from existing building model database. A set of homologous features between straight lines extracted from aerial digital image and model primitive are computed based on geometric similarity function. With obtained homologous features, EO parameter is recomputed using least square method. The result shows that die suggested method automatically co-register two data set in a reliable manner.
New methods to register multiple hemispheric slices of the postmortem brain to anatomically corresponding in-vivo MRI slices within a 3D volumetric MRI are presented. Gel-embedding and fiducial markers are used to reduce geometrical distortions in the postmortem brain volume. The registration algorithm relies on a recursive extraction of warped MRI slices from the reference MRI volume using a modified non-linear polynomial transformation until matching slices are found. Eight different voxel similarity measures are tested to get the best co-registration cost and the results show that combination of two different similarity measures shows the best performance. After validating the implementation and approach through simulation studies, the presented methods are applied to real data. The results demonstrate the feasibility and practicability of the presented coregistration methods, thus providing a means of MR signal analysis and histological examination of tissue lesions via coregistered images of postmortem brain slices and their corresponding MRI sections. With this approach, it is possible to investigate the pathology of a disease through both routinely acquired MRls and postmortem brain slices, thus improving the understanding of the pathological substrates and their progression.
The intercommissural(AC-PC) line is automatically detected for HR and PET images. With the detected AC-PC lines from MR and PET images, fully non-iterative automatic co- registration is accomplished. It provides a new automated method for image co-registration.

In this paper, we propose an automatic image registration method for multi-sensor image fusion such as visible and infrared images. The registration is achieved by finding corresponding feature points in both input images. In general, the global statistical correlation is not guaranteed between multi-sensor images, which bring out difficulties on the image registration for multi-sensor images. To cope with this problem, mutual information is adopted to measure correspondence of features and to select faithful points. An update algorithm for projective transform is also proposed. Experimental results show that the proposed method provides robust and accurate registration results.
For TOPS InSAR processing, high-precision image co-registration is required. We propose an image co-registration method suitable for the TOPS mode by comparing the performance of cross correlation method, the geometric co-registration and the enhanced spectral diversity (ESD) matching algorithm based on the spectral diversity (SD) on the Sentinel-1 TOPS mode image. Using 23 pairs of interferometric pairs generated from 25 Sentinel-1 TOPS images, we applied the cross correlation (CC), geometric correction with only orbit information (GC1), geometric correction combined with iterative cross-correlation (GC2, GC3, GC4), and ESD iteration (ESD_GC, ESD_1, ESD_2). The mean of co-registration errors in azimuth direction by cross correlation and geometric matching are 0.0041 pixels and 0.0016 pixels, respectively. Although the ESD method shows the most accurate result with the error of less than 0.0005 pixels, the error of geometric co-registration is reduced to 0.001 pixels by repetition through additional cross correlation matching between the reference and resampled slave image. The ESD method is not applicable when the coherence of the burst overlap areas is low. Therefore, the geometric co-registration method through iterative processing is a suitable alternative for time series analysis using multiple SAR data or generating interferogram with long time intervals.
