We report on the formation and chemical leaching of non-equilibrium $Al_{0.6}(Fe_{75}Co_{25})$ alloy produced by rod milling. X-ray diffractometry, transmission electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometry were used to characterize the as-milled and leached specimens. After 400 h, only the $Al_{0.4}Fe_{0.6}$ peak of the body-centered cubic type was present in the XRD pattern. The entire rod milling process could be divided into three different stages of milling: agglomeration, disintegration, and homogenization. The saturation magnetization, $M_s$ decreased with increased milling time, the $M_s$ of the powders before milling was about 113.8 emu/g, the $M_s$ after milling for 400 h was about 11.55 emu/g. Leaching of the Al in KOH of the Al at room temperature from the as-milled powders did not induce any significant change in the diffraction pattern. After the leached specimen had been annealed at $600^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour, the nanoscale crystalline phases were transformed into the bcc Fe, cubic Co, and $CoFe_2O_4$ phases. On cooling the specimen from 85$0^{\circ}C$, the degree of magnetization increased slightly, then increased sharply at approximately 364.8$^{\circ}C$, indicating that the bcc $Al_{0.4}Fe_{0.6}$ phase had been transformed to the Fe and Co phases.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the manufacturing feasibility of WC-Co milling inserts via Powder Injection Molding (PIM) process. WC-Co is used in a wide variety of cutting tools due to its high hardness, stiffness, compressive strength and wear resistance properties. WC-Co parts for a high stress application were conventionally produced by the press and sinter method, which were Iimited to 2 dimensional shapes. Manufacturing WC-Co parts for a high stress application by PIM implies that tool efficiency can be highly improved due to increased freedom is design. P30 grade WC powder (WC-Co-TiC-TaC system) was mixed with RIST-5B133 binder and injection molded into milling inserts (Taegu Tech. Model WCMX 06T 308). The mean grain size of the powder was about 0.8$\mu$m. Injection molded specimens were debound by solvent extraction and thermal degradation method at various conditions. The specimens were sintered at 140$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr in vacuum. Carbon content, weight loss, dimensional change, and macro defects of the specimen were carefully monitored at each stage of the PIM process. PIMed WC-Co milling inserts reached 100% full density after sinteing. Its mechanical properties and micro-structures were comparable with the press and sintered milling insert. Carbon content of the sintered WC-Co insert was mainly determained by the atmosphere of thermal debinding. By controlling powder loading and injection molding condition, dimensional accuracy could be obtained within 0.4%. We confirm that PIM can not only be an alternative manufacturing method for WC-Co parts economically but also provide a design freedom for more effieient cutting tools.
HDDR (hydrogenation, disproportionation, desorption, recombination) and mechanical milling processes have been applied to the $SmCo_{5}$ alloy in an attempt to produce a highly coercive powder. The $SmCo_{5}$ alloy had very high structural stability under the hydrogen atmosphere and the 1:5 phase was only partially disproportionated under up to 10 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ hydrogen gas. The partially disproportionated material was recombined not into 1:5 phase after the HDDR, but rather into multi-phase mixture consisting of 1:5, 2:17, 2:7 and 1:7 phases. The $SmCo_{5}$ alloy HDDR-treated with hydrogen up to 10 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ had poor coercivity. For a useful HDDR to prepare a high coercivity $SmCo_{5}$ alloy powder, much higher hydrogen pressure well exceeding 10 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ would be required. The $SmCo_{5}$ alloy lump was amorphized by an intensive mechanical milling, and it was crystallised ultra-finely by a subsequent optimum annealing. The optimally annealed material had very high coercivity, and it was found that the mechanical milling followed by an annealing was an effective way of producing highly coercive $SmCo_{5}$ alloy powder.
Sm-16.7wt%Co alloy powders were prepared by high energy ball milling under the conditions of various milling time and the content of process control agent (PCA), and their microstructure and magnetic properties were investigated to establish optimum processing conditions. The initial powders employed showed irregular shape and had a size ranging from 5 to $110\;{\mu}m$. After milling for 5 h, the shape of powders changed to round shape and their mean powder size was approximately $5\;{\mu}m$, which consisted of the agglomerated nano-sized particles with 15 nm in diameter. The coercivity was reduced with increasing the milling time, whereas the saturation magnetization increased. As the content of PCA increased, the powder size minutely decreased to approximately $7\;{\mu}m$ at the PCA content of 10 wt%. The XRD patterns showed that the main diffraction peaks disappeared apparently after milling, indicating the formation of amorphous structure. The measured values of coercivity were almost unchanged with increasing the content of PCA.

In this study, we investigate the effect of high-energy ball milling on thermoelectric transport properties in double-filled $CoSb_3$ skutterudite ($In_{0.2}Yb_{0.1}Co_4Sb_{12}$). $In_{0.2}Yb_{0.1}Co_4Sb_{12}$ powders are milled using high-energy ball milling for different periods of time (0, 5, 10, and 20 min), and the milled powders are consolidated into bulk samples by spark plasma sintering. Microstructure analysis shows that the high-energy ball milled bulk samples are composed of nano- and micro-grains. Because the filling fractions are reduced in the bulk samples due to the kinetic energy of the high-energy ball milling, the carrier concentration of the bulk samples decreases with the ball milling time. Furthermore, the mobility of the bulk samples also decreases with the ball milling time due to enhanced grain boundary scattering of electrons. Reduction of electrical conductivity by ball milling has a decisive effect on thermoelectric transport in the bulk samples, power factor decreases with the ball milling time.
Mechanical milling technique is considered to be a useful way of processing the fine Nd-Fe-B-type powder with high coercivity. In the present study, phase evolution of the $Nd_{15}(Fe_{1-x}Co_{x})_{77}B_{8}$ (x=0-0.6) alloys during the high energy mechanical milling and annealing was investigated. The effect of Co-substitution on the crystallization of the mechanically milled $Nd_{15}(Fe_{1-x}Co_{x})_{77}B_{8}$ amorphous material was examined. The Nd-Fe-B-type alloys can be amorphized completely by a high-energy mechanical milling. On annealing of the amorphous material, fine $\alpha$-Fe crystallites form first from the amorphous. These fine $\alpha$-Fe crystallites reacts with the remaining amorphous afterwards, leading to crystallization to $Nd_2Fe_{14}$B phase. The Co-substitution for Fe in $Nd_{15}(Fe_{1-x}Co_{x})_{77}B_{8}$ ($\mu$x=0∼0.6) alloys lower significantly the crystallization temperature of the amorphous phase to the $Nd_2Fe_{14}$B phase. The mechanically milled and annealed $Nd_{15}Fe_{77}B_8$ alloy without Co-substitution exhibits consistently better magnetic properties with respect to the alloys with Co-substitution.

SnCo alloy powder prepared by high energy ball milling is examined as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries. As the ball-milling time increased, the crystallinity of SnCo decreased. XRD and TEM SADP showed that nanocrystalline and amorphous phase coexisted after 16 h ball-milling. As the crystallinity decreased, the cycleability increased. At first cycle, there are 4 plateau potentials. The observation of voltage plateau at about 0.68 V confirms the formation of Sn-Li alloy and Co metal. It is considered that The plateau potentials below 0.68 V were reaction between Li and Sn. The change of chemical diffusion coefficient showed that the structure of SnCo alloy abruptly changed at first cycle, and maintained after 2nd cycle.

The effects of the mixing of an active material and a conductive additive on the electrochemical performance of an electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) electrode were investigated. Coin-type EDLC cells with an organic electrolyte were fabricated using the electrode samples with different ball-milling times for the mixing of an active material and a conductive additive. The ball-milling time had a strong influence on the electrochemical performance of the EDLC electrode. The homogeneous mixing of the active material and the conductive additive by ball-milling was very important to obtain an efficient EDLC electrode. However, an EDLC electrode with an excessive ball-milling time displayed low electrical conductivity due to the characteristic change of a conductive additive, leading to poor electrochemical performance. The mixing of an active material and a conductive additive played a crucial role in determining the electrochemical performance of EDLC electrode. The optimal ball-milling time contributed to a homogeneous mixing of an active material and a conductive additive, leading to good electrochemical performance of the EDLC electrode.
A study was made on the fabrication of nanostructured Fe-Co powders by mechanical alloying and their magnetic properties. Microstrural development during the process of MA was inverstigated by means of X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analyzer, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The magnetic properties of NS Fe-Co powders were evaluated through the measurements of the saturation magnetization $(M_s)$ as well as the coercivity $(H_c)$. The average grain size calculated from line braodening in XRD peak was about 10nm or less and confirmed by TEM. In this experiment, two different milling methods (cycle opertion and conventional milling) were used. Cycle operation had an advantage over the conventional milling method in that more refined powders can be obtained. Solid state alloying of the components was confirmed from both the change of the saturation magnetization and the change of lattice parameter with Co contentration. Maxium $M_s$ was obtained at the composition of 30at.%Co. Relatively high coercivities of 10~150e were obtained for the compositions investigated, and this seems to be due to the high amount of internal strain introduced during milling.
This study focuses on the fabrication of a WC/Co composite powder from the oxide of WC/Co hardmetal scrap using solid carbon in a hydrogen gas atmosphere for the recycling of WC/Co hardmetal. Mixed powders are manufactured by mechanically milling the oxide powder of WC-13 wt% Co hardmetal scrap and carbon black with varying powder/ball weight ratios. The oxide powder of WC-13 wt% Co hardmetal scrap consists of $WO_3$ and $CoWO_4$. The mixed powder mechanically milled at a lower powder/ball weight ratio (high mechanical milling energy) has a more rapid carbothermal reduction reaction in the formation of WC and Co phases compared with that mechanically milled at a higher powder/ball weight ratio (lower mechanical milling energy). The WC/Co composite powder is fabricated at $900^{\circ}C$ for 6 h from the oxide of WC/Co hardmetal scrap using solid carbon in a hydrogen gas atmosphere. The fabricated WC/Co composite powder has a particle size of approximately $0.25-0.5{\mu}m$.
