  • This study presents new scheme for various walking pattern of biped robot under the limitted enviroments. We show that the neural network is significantly more attractive intelligent controller design than previous traditional forms of control systems. A multilayer backpropagation neural network identification is simulated to obtain a learning control solution of biped robot. Once the neural network has learned, the other neural network control is designed for various trajectory tracking control with same learning-base. The main advantage of our scheme is that we do not require any knowledge about the system dynamic and nonlinear characteristic, and can therefore treat the robot as a black box. It is also shown that the neural network is a powerful control theory for various trajectory tracking control of biped robot with same learning-vase. That is, we do net change the control parameter for various trajectory tracking control. Simulation and experimental result show that the neural network is practically feasible and realizable for iterative learning control of biped robot.

  • In this research, we proposed a new approach to implement the real-time motion control of biped robot based on voice command for unmanned FA. Voice is one of convenient methods to communicate between human and robots. To command a lot of robot task by voice, voice of the same number have to be able to be recognition voice is, the higher the time of recognition is. In this paper, a practical voice recognition system which can recognition a lot of task commands is proposed. The proposed system consists of a general purpose microprocessor and a useful voice recognition processor which can recognize a limited number of voice patterns. Given biped robots, each robot task is, classified and organized such that the number of robot tasks under each directory is net more than the maximum recognition number of the voice recognition processor so that robot tasks under each directory can be distinguished by the voice recognition command. By simulation and experiment, it was illustrated the reliability of voice recognition rates for application of the manufacturing process.

  • In this study, we present a multi-sensor module for snake robot searching survivors in a narrow space. To this end, we integrated five sensor systems by considering the opinions of the first responders: a gas sensor to detect CO2 gases from the exhalation of survivors, a CMOS camera to provide the image of survivors, an IR camera to see in the dark & smoky environment, two microphones to detect the voice of survivors, and an IMU to recognize the approximate location and direction of the robot and survivors. Furthermore, we integrated a speaker into the sensor module system to provide a communication channel between the first responders and survivors. To integrated all these mechatronics systems in a small, compact snake head, we optimized the positions of the sensors and designed a stacked structure for the whole system. We also developed a user-friendly GUI to show the information from the proposed sensor systems visually. Experimental results verified the searching function of the proposed sensor module system.

  • In this study, a motion planning method based on the integer representation of contact status between wheels and the ground is proposed for planning swing motion of a 6×6 wheel-legged robot to cross large obstacles and gaps. Wheel-legged robots can drive on a flat road by wheels and overcome large obstacles by legs. Autonomously crossing large obstacles requires the robot to perform complex motion planning of multi-contacts and wheel-rolling at the same time. The lift-off and touch-down status of wheels and the trajectories of legs should be carefully planned to avoid collision between the robot body and the obstacle. To address this issue, we propose a planning method for swing motion of robot legs. It combines an integer representation of discrete contact status and a trajectory optimization based on the direct collocation method, which results in a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem. The planned motion is used to control the joint angles of the articulated legs. The proposed method is verified by the MuJoCo simulation and shows that over 95% and 83% success rate when the height of vertical obstacles and the length of gaps are equal to or less than 1.68 times of the wheel radius and 1.44 times of the wheel diameter, respectively.

  • This paper proposes a new approach to the designed of visual feedback control system based on visual servoing method. The main focus of this paper is presented how it is effective to use many features for improving the accuracy of the visual feedback control of industrial articulated robot for assembling and inspection of parts. Some rank conditions, which relate the image Jacobian, and the control performance are derived. It is also proven that the accuracy is improved by increasing the number of features. The effectiveness of redundant features is verified by the real time experiments on a SCARA type robot(FARA) made in samsung electronics company.

  • This paper addresses the localization and navigation problem in the movement of service robots by using invisible two dimensional barcodes on the floor. Compared with other methods using natural or artificial landmarks, the proposed localization method has great advantages in cost and appearance since the location of the robot is perfectly known using the barcode information after mapping is finished. We also propose a navigation algorithm which uses a topological structure. For the topological information, we define nodes and edges which are suitable for indoor navigation, especially for large area having multiple rooms, many walls, and many static obstacles. The proposed algorithm also has the advantage that errors which occur in each node are mutually independent and can be compensated exactly after some navigation using barcodes. Simulation and experimental results were performed to verify the algorithm in the barcode environment, showing excellent performance results. After mapping, it is also possible to solve the kidnapped robot problem and to generate paths using topological information.

  • One of the important research issues in mobile robot is how to detect the 3D environment fast and accurately, and recognize it. Sensing methods of utilizing laser structured light and/or stereo vision are representatively used among a number of methodologies developed to date. However, the methods are still in need of achieving high accuracy and reliability to be used for real world environments. In this paper to implement a new robotic environmental sensing algorithm is presented by combining the information between intensity image and that of laser structured light image. To see how effectively the algorithm applied to real environments, we developed a sensor system that can be mounted on a mobile robot and tested performance for a series of environments.

  • Using industrial robots and sensors, we developed an inline car body inspection system which proposes high flexibility and sufficient accuracy. Car Body Inspection(CBI) cell consists of two industrial robots, two corresponding carriages, camera vision system, a process computer with multi-tasking ability and several LDS's. As industrial robots guarantee sufficient repeatabilities, the CBI cell adopts the concept of relative measurement instead of that of absolute measurement. By comparing the actual measured data with reference data, the dimensional errors of the corresponding points can be calculated. The length of the robot arms changes according to ambient temperature and it affects the measuring accuracy. To compensate this error, a robot arm calibration process was realized. By measuring a reference jig, the differential changes of the robot arms due to temperature fluctuation can be calculated and compensated.

  • We have shown how unstructured modeling was used to derive a general stability condition in Part 1. In Part 2, we focus on the particular dynamics (structures modeling) of the robot manipulator and environment. Using rigid body dynamics, the stability condition for the direct drive robots has been achieved in terms of the Jacobian and robot tracking controller. Combining the structured and unstructured modeling, a stability condition for a particular application can be obtained. This approach has been used to analyze compliant motion on the University of Minnesota robot using a feedforward torque controller. We have obtained a stability condition for this application. Through both simulation and experiment, the sufficiency of this condition has been demonstrated. For a sufficient stability condition, recall that if the condition is satisfied, then the stability is guaranteed; however, if the condition is violated, no conclusion can be made.

  • This paper describes a medular neural network(MNN) for a vision system which tracks a given object using a sequence of images from a camera unit. The MNN is used to precisely recognize the given robot endeffector and to minize the processing time. Since the robot endeffector can be viewed in many different shapes in 3-D space, a MNN structure, which contains a set of feedforwared neural networks, co be more attractive in recognizing the given object. Each single neural network learns the endeffector with a cluster of training patterns. The training patterns for a neural network share the similar charateristics so that they can be easily trained. The trained MNN is less sensitive to noise and it shows the better performance in recognizing the endeffector. The recognition rate of MNN is enhanced by 14% over the single neural network. A vision system with the MNN can precisely recognize the endeffector and place it at the center of a display for a remote operator.
