  • A vacuum-packed seasoned-dried product of sea mussel, Mytilus edulis, caught in the southern coasts of Korea, was prepared and stored at $35^{\circ}C$ for 70 days to test quality stability. Sea mussel, purchased from Jagalchi fish market in Busan, was steamed, shucked and eliminated byssus. The sea mussel meat was seasoned with the seasoning solution prepared with sugar, salt, sorbitol, glycerol, monosodium glutamate, 5'-ribonucleotide and smoke flavor (Smoke-EZ, Alpha Foods Co., Ltd.). After seasoning, the meat was dried at $52-58^{\circ}C$ for three hours, vacuum-packed in the laminated plastic film bag($14{\times}15cm$), and finally sterilized at $120^{\circ}C$ for 26 minutes in hot water circulating retort. The moisture, water activity, color value(L, a and b value), texture, TBA value and viable bacterial count of the products were determined during the period of storage at $35^{\circ}C$. From the results obtained, it became clear that the product could be preserved in a good quality for 70 days at $35^{\circ}C$, though a slight decrease in moisture content and development of a pale brown color was resulted. Judging from the sensory evaluation on flavor, the products containing smoke flavor were most desirable.

  • In order to retain the freshness of fruits and vegetables and to reduce the rate of disease damage, grafruit seed extract (GPSE), natural microorganism control agent, was applied during the preservation process of fresh fruits and vegetables. GFSE showed an effective inhibitory action against plant putrefactive bacteria and fungi which were involved in the decay of fruits and vegetables. Minimal inhibitory concentrations for GFSE against the microbes were in the range of 50 to 2,000 ppm. Direct observation of microbial cells and spores using electron microscopy showed their function was destroyed by the treatment of the dilute solutions of GFSE. Fresh Welsh onions, onions and red peppers treated with GFSE and stored in polyethylene film (0.1 mm) retained better quality in color and texture than the non-treated control. GFSE was efficient in controlling the germination of potatoes. It was observed that GFSE would reduce disease damages and have bactericidal and fungicidal properties during the storage of such fruits and vegetables as zucchinis, cucumbers, tomatoes and mandarin oranges.

  • The purpose of this article is to study the aspects of transformation of Treasure Island(1883), Robert Louis Stevenson's novel in two feature animations (1987) of Osamu Dezaki and (2002) of Ron Clements and John Musker by analyzing characters. In the original novel, as a typical wicked villain and traitor, Long John Silver functioned as an obstacle in Jim Hawkins' Bildungsroman. And Osamu Dezaki laid great emphasis on the friendship between Jim and Stiver His might be an excellent example of the faithful adaptation. But in Disney's , from initial mistrust, to friendly co-worker, to mentor and protege, and finally, to mutual rescuers, Jim and Silver have created a permanent bond that can never be broken - their coming together has changed both their lives forever. Jim's voyage of searching for treasure is not just for the discovery of material riches unimaginable but also for the discovery of his own true worth. Making the Sliver/Jim relationship more focused, Jim ends up discovering not just an obvious treasure; he discovers an inner treasure. From this viewpoint, this feature film could be an outstanding transformative adaptation.

  • In this study, in order to remove Cd(II) from aqueous solutions, strongly acidic cation exchange resin(SK1B) by Diaion Co. was employed as an adsorbent. Experiments were mainly performed in two parts at room temperature($25{\pm}5^{\circ}C$) : batch tests and adsorption kinetics tests. In batch tests adsorption equilibrium time, pH effects, temperature effects, several adsorption isotherms, and finally desorption tests were examined. In differential bed tests, an optimum flow rate and an overall adsorption rate were obtained. In the batch experiment, adsorption capability increased with pH and became constant above pH 6 and adsorption quantity increased with temperature. Batch experimental data found that Freundlich and Sips adsorption isotherms were more favorable than Langmuir adsorption isotherm over the range of concentration (5~15ppm). The desorbent used in the desorption test was hydrochloric acid solution with different concentrations(0.01~2N). The degree of regeneration increased with concentration of desorbent and decreased slightly with the number of regeneration. In the continuous flow process using a differential bed reactor, the optimum flow rate was $564m{\ell}/min$ above which the film diffusion resistance was minimized. The overall adsorption rate for the removal of Cd(II) by cation exchange resin was found as follows ; $r=1.3785C_{fc}^{1.2421}-2.0907{\times}10^{0.0746C_i}\;q_e^{0.0121C_i-0.0301}$

  • Copolymers(HSA-98-20, HSA-98-0, HSA-98+20) which we acrylic resin containing 80% solid content were synthesized by the reaction of monomers, including methyl methacrylate, n-butyl acrylate, and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate with a functional monomer, acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate (AAEM), which nay give improvements in cross-linking density and physical properties of films. The physical properties of prepared acrylic resins, containing AAEM, are as follows viscosities, $1420\sim5760cps$ ; number average molecular weight, $2080\sim2300g/mol$; polydispersity index, $2.07\sim2.19$ ; and conversions, $88\sim93%$. In the next step, high-solid coatings (HSA-98-20C, HSA-98-0C, HSA-98+20C) were prepared by the curing reaction between acrylic resins containing 80% solid content and isocyanate at room temperature. Various properties were examined on the film coated with the prepared high-solid coatings. The introduction of AAEM to the coatings enhanced the abrasion resistance and solvent resistance, which indicated the possible use of high- solid coatings for top-coating materials of automobile. Since the curing by viscoelastic measurement occurred in sequence of HSA-98+20C > HSA-98-0C > HSA-98-20C, it was concluded that the curing rates became faster with incresing $T_g$ values.

  • In 1his paper, applicability of laser welding to joining process of single crystal nickel base superalloy turbine blades was investigated. Because heat input of laser welding is more precisely controlled 1han TIG welding, it is possible to optimize solidification microstructure of the welds. Since in single crystal nickel base superalloy the crystal orientation have a significant effect on the strength, it is important to control the solidification microstructure in the fusion zone. A single crystal nickel base supera1loy, CMSX-4, plates were bead-on welded and butt welded using a $CO_2$ laser. The effects of microstructure and crystal orientation on properties of the weld joints were investigated. In bead-on weldling, welding directions were deviated from the base metal [100] direction by 0, 5, 15 and 30 degrees. The welds with deviation angles of 15 and 30 degrees showed fusion zone transverse cracks. As the deviation angles became larger, the fusion zone had more cracking. In the cross section microstructure, the fusion zone grains in 0 and 5 degrees welds grew epitaxially from the base metal spins except for the bead neck regions. The grains in the bead neck regions contained stray crystals. As deviation angles increased, number of the stray crystals increased. In butt welding, the declinations of the crystal orientation of the two base metals varied 0, 5 and 10 degrees. All beads had no cracks. In the 5 degrees bead, the cross section and surface microstructures showed that the fusion zone grains grew epitaxially from the base metal grains. However, the 10 degrees bead, the bead cross section and surface contained the stray crystals in the center of the welds. Orientations of the stray crystals accorded with the heat flow directions in the weld pool. When the welding direction was deviated from the base metal [100] direction, cracks appeared in the area including the stray crystals. The cracks developed along the grain boundaries of the stray crystals with high angles in the final solidification regions at the center of the welds. The fracture surfaces were covered with liquid film. The cracks, therefore, found to be solidification cracks due to the presence of low melting eutectic. As the results, in both bead-on welding and butt welding the deviation angles should be control within 5 degrees for preventing the fusion zone cracks. To investigate the mechanical properties of the weld joints, high temperature tensile tests for bead-on welds with deviation angles of 0 and 5 degrees and the butt welds with dec1ination angles of 0, 5 and 10 degrees were conducted at 1123K. The the tensile strength of all weld joints were more 1han 800MPa that is almost 80% of the tensile strength of the base metal. The strength of the laser weld joints were more than twice that of tue TIG weld joints with a filler metal of Inconel 625. The results reveals 1hat laser welding is more effective joining process for single crystal nickelbase superalloy turbine blades 1han TIG welding.

  • Little information exists on how wash operations affect water quality, or the efficacy of sanitizers on vegetable quality and microbial reduction in fresh-cut carrot shreds. This study evaluated the efficacy of chlorine and ozone in reducing microbial loads and maintaining vegetable quality of carrot shreds. Fresh-cut carrot shreds were teated with various chlorine and ozone concentrations for differing times. The samples were then centrifuged to remove excess water, packaged in film, and stored at $5^{\circ}C$. The result indicated that varying the ozonated water wash time affected microbial growth the development of unpleasant odors, color, and the overall quality of carrot shreds. Ozonated water washing for 20 min maintained vegetable quality by inhibiting unpleasant odors, the development of whiteness, and by reducing microbial populations. A single chlorine water wash was effective and resulted in better vegetable quality when compared with two washes. Samples washed for 20 min in ozonated water, however, had better vegetable quality and smaller microbial counts compared to samples washed once in chlorine water A 20 min ozonated water wash is an attractive method for the maintenance of vegetable quality and shelf-life in fresh-cut carrot shreds.

  • New PPV derivatives which contain electron-withdrawing CF3F4phenyl group, poly[2-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-5-(2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-trifluoromethylphenyl)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (CF3F4P-PPV), and poly[2-(4-(2-etylhexyloxy)-phenyl)-5-(2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-trifluoromethylphenyl)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (P-CF3F4P-PPV), have been synthesized by GILCH polymerization. As the result of the introduction of the electron-withdrawing CF3F4phenyl group to the phenyl backbone, the LUMO and HOMO energy levels of CF3F4P-PPV (3.14, 5.50 eV) and P-CF3F4P-PPV (3.07, 5.60 eV) were reduced. The PL emission spectra in solid thin film are more red-shifted over 50 nm and increased fwhm (full width at half maximum) than solution conditions by raising aggregation among polymer backbone due to electron withdrawing effect of 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-trifluoromethylphenyl group. The EL emission maxima of CF3F4P-PPV and P-CF3F4P-PPV appear at around 530-543 nm. The current density-voltage-luminescence (J-V-L) characteristics of ITO/PEDOT/polymer/Al devices of CF3F4P-PPV and P-CF3F4P-PPV show that turn-on voltages are around 12.5 and 7.0 V, and the maximum brightness are about 82 and 598 cd/m2, respectively. The maximum EL efficiency of P-CF3F4P-PPV (0.51 cd/A) was higher than that of CF3F4P-PPV (0.025 cd/A).

  • Super hydrophilic and high transparent $TiO_2$ thin films were successfully fabricated by sol-gel method without an irradiation of UV light. In addition, surfactant Tween 80 was used for increasing the transmittance of the thin films. When the contents of Tween 80 in $TiO_2$ solution were 0.0, 1.0, 3.0, 5.0 wt%, the transmittance of $TiO_2$ thin films was ca. 74.31%, 74.25%, 79.69%, 81.99% at 550 nm wavelength, respectively. The contact angles of fabricated $TiO_2$ thin films with or without Tween 80 were from ca. $4.0^{\circ}$ to $4.5^{\circ}$. The $TiO_2$ thin films annealed over $400^{\circ}C$ showed anatase crystal structure and the photocatalytic property that decomposed methyl orange with UV irradiation. The surface morphologies, optical properties and contact angle of prepared thin films with different contents of Tween 80 were evaluated by field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), X-ray diffratometer (XRD), UV-Vis spectrophotometer and contact angle meter.

  • The purpose of this paper is to explain the making procedure and the usage of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve for interpretation of radiographic images. The conventional radiograms obtained after the creation of the lesions in the acrylic plates and were enhanced in color. The observer were informed of which tooth to examine, the 'a priori' probability of a lesion present and the approximate diameter of the lesions. The two groups of films were interpreted separately by the same observer using the same rating scale. The following rating scale was used: A; definitely no lesion, B; probably no lesion, C; not sure, D; probably a lesion, and E; definitely a lesion. In analysis, for each observer the diagnostic results in terms of true positive (TP) and false positive (FP) decisions were plotted on a graph. The lowest point on the graph represents the TP and FP when only decisions designated as E according to the rating scale are included. The next point shows the TP and FP values when diagnoses designated as D are added and so forth. By connecting such plot points, a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves is obtained. The area under the curve represents the diagnostic accuracy resulting from a diagnostic performance at pure chance level and a value of 1.0 at perfect performance. This method has been known as an useful method to detect the minute difference for each radiographic technic, each observer and for the different lesion depths.
