  • We present HST NIC3 photometry of metal-rich globular clusters Palomar 6, Liller 1 and 47 Tuc (NGC 104). We discuss the interstellar reddening law for the HST NICMOS F110W/F160W photometric system which depends on the temperature of the source. The distance moduli and interstellar reddening values for Palomar 6 and Liller 1 are estimated by comparing the magnitudes and colors of RHB stars in the clusters with those of 47 Tuc. We obtain $(m-M)_0=14.48$mag and E(B-V)=1.34mag for Palomar 6 and $(m-M)_0=15.17$mag and E(B-V)=2.50 mag for Liller 1.

  • Purpose - This paper aims to explain the interactive relationship between small and medium-sized enterprises' clusters and regional economic growth, with Jiangsu Province as an illustrative example. It focuses on studying the promotional effects, if any, of small and medium-sized enterprises' cluster-development on regional economic growth, and vice-versa. Research design, data, and methodology - Data were collected from the Jiangsu Statistical Yearbook and the China Industrial Economic Statistical Yearbook, by selecting 26 industries as the research subjects. The sample interval selection is 1981-2012. The data were analyzed with the dynamic panel system using stata 12.0. Results - 1) The small and medium-sized enterprises' cluster degree and Jiangsu's economic growth have a long-term stable equilibrium relationship. 2) In the short term, they have a dynamic adjustment 3) The enterprises' cluster degree leads to regional economic growth in Jiangsu, but not vice-versa. Conclusions - Small and medium-sized enterprises' clusters have an important promotional effect on Jiangsu's economic growth, especially industries with high degree of agglomeration. Therefore, the formation of these clusters can significantly improve economic growth.

  • Galaxy clusters, the largest gravitationally bound system, are important means to place constraints on cosmological model and to study the evolution and the formation of galaxies and their large scale distribution. We will report results from our study of galaxy clusters in the European Large Area ISO Survey North1/North2(ELAIS-N1/N2) fields, covering a total of 10.8 $deg^2$. We combine multiple wavelength data from IMS survey, UKIRT Infrared Deep Survey-Deep Extragalactic Survey (UKIDSS-DXS, JK bands), Spitzer Wise-area InfraRed Extragalactic survey (SWIRE, Optical-Infrared bands), and CFHT (u,g,r,i,z bands.) The photometric redshifts are derived from these datasets and are used to search for high redshift galaxy clusters at 0.8 < z < 1.5.

  • Clustering in data mining is a discovery process that groups a set of data such that the intracluster similarity is maximized and intercluster similarity is minimized. The discovered clusters from clustering process are used to explain the characteristics of the data distribution. In this paper we propose a new methodology for clustering related transactions with categorical attributes. Our approach starts with transforming general relational databases into a transactional databases. We make use of inter-dimensional association rules for composing hypergraph edges, and a hypergraph partitioning algorithm for clustering the values of attributes. The clusters of the values of attributes are used to find the clusters of transactions. The suggested procedure can enhance the interpretation of resulting clusters with allocated attribute values.

  • In the 1980s, even though Italy faced economic depression, Italy (she), now, internationally became a strong nation with its best design by national unity and the developmental leap of industry through design. In Italy, especially, small and medium enterprises are accumulated by the same business in each area on the structure of a Cluster system. Italy has some characteristics that being the Italians' elastic way of management, family management and development of a consortium of small and medium enterprises, which have flexibility, imagination and decisiveness. We have to bring these intensified factors of design competitiveness to our country so that we should form the union in order to have a monopoly of specific enterprises based on the specialized technology of small and medium enterprises innovating the structure of a small quantity production having developmental flexibility. We also heighten the sense of designer and publics by achieving social opinion and cult! ural revival. Moreover, the mind of managers has to be changed more aggressively. Finally, the actual policy of design will be established and peformed, and design-company (enterprises) and the industrial economy will generally develop when we activate the structure of the industry centered on small and medium enterprises and design-related association that is united and participates in the establishment of design policy.

  • This study investigates the interaction effects of mechanical property-based clusters and colorimetric tones on the subjective touch and color sensation of fabrics when sight and touch were simultaneously provided to humans. Each of six different silk fabrics was colored by digital textile printing to have three tones (pale, vivid, and grayish) and its mechanical properties were measured by a Kawabata Evaluation System (KES). Touch and color sensation were identified to be primarily influenced by mechanical property-based clusters and tones, respectively. In touch, 'smooth', 'warm', 'heavy', and 'soft' were found to be affected by interactive effects of mechanical property-based clusters and colorimetric tone so that the pale tone tended to make differences smaller among the clusters for the touch sensation, while the grayish tone seemed to contribute to larger differences of 'heavy'. However, an interaction effect was not found in the color sensation with touch even though the color sensation was also influenced by mechanical property-based clusters.

  • M85 is a nearby merger remnant galaxy located at the northern part of the Virgo Cluster. Because of its remarkable merging features, it is an interesting object to investigate its formation history. Globular clusters are a great tracer of the formation history of early-type galaxies, so that we study the globular cluster system of M85. It has been already found that there are "intermediate-color" globular clusters as well as blue and red ones based on the photometric survey using CFHT/Megacam. For follow-up research, we obtain the spectra of 21 globular clusters in the central region of M85 using Gemini-N/GMOS. We estimate their ages and metallicities based on the strength of Lick indices. We detect the intermediate-age population (~ 2 Gyr) with solar metallicities, comprising about 50% of the observed globular clusters, as well as old and metal-poor population. It suggests that M85 experienced a major merging event around 2 Gyr ago. We discuss these results regarding to the formation history of M85.

  • I present a model to explain the mass segregation and shallow mass functions observed in the central parts of starburst stellar clusters. The model assumes that the initial pre-stellar cores mass function resulting from the turbulent fragmentation of the proto-cluster cloud is significantly altered by the cores coalescence before they collapse to form stars. With appropriate, yet realistic parameters, this model based on the competition between cores coalescence and collapse reproduces the mass spectra of the well studied Arches cluster. Namely, the slopes at the intermediate and high mass ends, as well as the peculiar bump observed at $6M_{\bigodot}$. This coalescence-collapse process occurs on a short timescale of the order of the free fall time of the proto-cluster cloud (i.e., a few $10^4$ years), suggesting that mass segregation in Arches and similar clusters is primordial. The best fitting model implies the total mass of the Arches cluster is $1.45{\times}10^5M_{\bigodot}$, which is slightly higher than the often quoted, but completeness affected, observational value of a few $10^4M_{\bigodot}$. The model implies a star formation efficiency of ${\sim}30$ percent which implies that the Arches cluster is likely to a gravitationally bound system.

  • We study the diffusion of Ag based bimetallic nanoclusters supported on graphite. Using a molecular dynamics simulation, we reveal that the Ag clusters show rapid diffusion because of their hexagonal bottom layer. In order to decrease the rate of diffusion, we added Pt and Ni to distort the structure of the alloy cluster (i.e., the alloying method). We expected Pt to provide a stronger force on Ag atoms, and Ni to shorten the bond length and thereby change the structure of Ag cluster. However, the attempt was unsuccessful, because Pt and Ni atoms formed cores inside the Ag clusters. We therefore designed a collision system where large Ag clusters collide with small Pt or Ni clusters. Upon collision with Pt clusters, the diffusion showed little change, because Pt atoms are substituted at the Ag atomic site and form a perfectly ordered structure. The collision with Ni, however, deforms the bottom layer as well as the overall cluster structure and decreases diffusion. This outcome appoints toward the possibility of further application to the manufacture of durable nanocatalysts.

  • Wide-field $JHK_s$ images obtained with the SIRIUS near-infrared camera of the IRSF 1.4m telescope are used to examine the tidal structures of the spatial stellar configuration around six metal-poor ([Fe/H]< -1.0) globular clusters located within 3 kpc from the Galactic center. The radial surface density profiles are obtained from the surface photometry of the cluster images and the star counting for the photometric data. For the star counting, candidates of cluster member stars are selected with an filtering algorithm in color-magnitude diagrams. We find that the six target clusters show tidal overdensity features in the radial surface density profiles. There is a break inside the tidal radius for each cluster, and the profile in the outer overdensity region is characterized by a power law. Two-dimensional density maps of all the clusters show distorted asymmetric stellar configurations in the outer region. In five out of the six target clusters, the overdensity features are likely to be associated with the effects of the Galaxy dynamical interaction and the cluster space motions. The observed tidal configurations of stars suggest that several metal-poor clusters in the Galactic bulge are possibly surviving remnants of mergers to build the old stellar system of the Galactic bulge.
