The K-means algorithm is widely used at the initial stage of data analysis in data mining process, partly because of its low time complexity and the simplicity of practical implementation. Cluster validity indices are used along with the algorithm in order to determine the number of clusters as well as the clustering results of datasets. In this paper, we present a performance comparison of sixteen indices, which are selected from forty indices in literature, while considering their applicability to nonhierarchical clustering algorithms. Data sets used in the experiment are generated based on multivariate normal distribution. In particular, four error types including standardization, outlier generation, error perturbation, and noise dimension addition are considered in the comparison. Through the experiment the effects of varying number of points, attributes, and clusters on the performance are analyzed. The result of the simulation experiment shows that Calinski and Harabasz index performs the best through the all datasets and that Davis and Bouldin index becomes a strong competitor as the number of points increases in dataset.
The galaxy cluster Abell 115 shows ongoing merger features, which suggest that it might be in an intermediate phase of dynamical evolution. As merging clusters often show, the characteristic hints of A115's merging activities include radio relics, double X-ray peaks, and large offsets between the cluster member galaxies and the X-ray distributions. To constrain the exact stage of the merger, it is necessary to obtain its dark matter distribution. In this study, we carry out a precision weak lensing study of this interesting system based on Subaru images. We present our mass reconstruction together with descriptions on our core procedure of the analysis: Subaru data reduction, galaxy shape measurement, and source selection. We find that Abell 115 consists of two massive dark matter clumps, which closely follow the cluster galaxies. Our weak lensing mass estimate is a few factors lower than the published dynamical mass obtained from velocity dispersion. This large mass discrepancy may be attributed to a significant departure from dynamical equilibrium.
The BVR CCD photometry was performed for the globular cluster M13 down to $V=19^m$ over the region from the center to the west 13 arcmin and the CMD of M13 is investigated. The major photometric error in the crowded field which is due to the variation in the sky background was corrected by the median filtering method and the direct sky method. Some characteristics of the CMD of M13 obtained in the present study are as follows: Firstly, the distribution of stars on the CMD is well consistent with the mean lines of Sandage(1970) along the red giant branch(RGB), horizontal branch(HB) and asymtotic giant branch(AGB). Secondly, some gaps exists along the RGB and blue horizontal branch(BHB). Thirdly, the UV-bright stars are more concentrated at the inner region of the cluster.
Cluster-based servers are utilized for large scale streaming services. These servers show good performance under fair resource usage balance policies between backend nodes. In this paper, cluster-based VOD servers are implemented based on WMI functions. Based on these functions, the information of resource usages in backend nodes can be exchanged and also the working states of cluster nodes can be monitored periodically. In experiences, we find motivations to design an effective load balancing policy. In addition, to provide reliable streaming services, the method to detect a partial failure in cluster-based servers is proposed.

A pulsed molecular beam source having short pulse duration (typically 70 ${\mu}s)$ and narrow velocity distribution (${\Delta}$v/v=8% for helium) has been costructed utilizing a commercial fuel injector. Beam characteristics of helium and ammonia seeded in helium expansions are accomplished by the use of an electron impact time-or-flight mass spectrometer. The comparisons between experimental data and theoretical calculations show that the proper beam speed is important to predict the evolution of stream temperature and valve shutter function. The decreasing tendency of pulse duration with increasing cluster size leads to the conclusion that the cluster beam property is described as a function of cluster mass and disinct cluster temperature.
The formation and evolution of galaxies is known to be fundamentally linked to the local environment in which they reside. In the highest-density cluster environments, galaxies tend to be more massive, have lower star formation rates and dust content, and a higher fraction have elliptical morphologies. The stellar populations of these cluster galaxies are older implying that they formed the bulk of their stars much earlier and have since evolved passively. Quantifying the specific environmental factors that contribute to shaping cluster galaxies over the Hubble time and measuring their early evolution can only be accomplished by directly tracing the galaxy growth in young clusters and forming porto-clusters. In this talk, I will present a novel technique designed to map out the total dust obscured star formation relative to where existing stars lie. I will demonstrate that this technique can be used 1) to determine if/where/when the activity is heightened or suppressed in dense cluster environment; 2) to measure the total mass and spatial distribution of stellar populations; and 3) to better inform theoretical models. Our ongoing work to extend this analysis out to protoclusters (z~2-4) will be discussed.
We examine the HI gas kinematics and distribution of galaxy pairs in group or cluster environment from high-resolution Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) WALLABY pilot observations. We use 22 well-resolved galaxies in the Hydra cluster of which 4 galaxies are visually identified as pairs and others are isolated ones. We perform profile decomposition of HI velocity profiles of the galaxies using a new tool, BAYGAUD which enables us to separate a line-of-sight velocity profile into an optimal number of Gaussian components based on Bayesian MCMC techniques. All the HI velocity profiles of the galaxies are decomposed into kinematically cold or warm gas components with their velocity dispersion, 4~8 km/s or > 8 km/s, respectively. We derive the mass fraction of the kinematically cold gas with respect to the total HI gas mass, f = log10(M_cold / M_HI), of the galaxies and correlate them with their dynamical mass. The cold gas reservoir of the paired galaxies in the Hydra cluster is found to be relatively higher than that of the isolated ones which show a negative correlation with the dynamical mass in general.
We present a new catalog of galaxies in the wider region of the Virgo cluster, based on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7. The Extended Virgo Cluster Catalog (EVCC) covers an area of 725 deg2 or 60.1 Mpc2. It is 5.2 times larger than the footprint of the classical Virgo Cluster Catalog (VCC) and reaches out to 3.5 times the virial radius of the Virgo cluster. We selected 1324 spectroscopically targeted galaxies with radial velocities less than 3000 km s-1. In addition, 265 galaxies that have been missed in the SDSS spectroscopic survey but have available redshifts in the NASA Extragalactic Database are also included. Our selection process secured a total of 1589 galaxies of which 676 galaxies are not included in the VCC. The certain and possible cluster members are defined by means of redshift comparison with a cluster infall model. We employed two independent and complementary galaxy classification schemes: the traditional morphological classification based on the visual inspection of optical images and a characterization of galaxies from their spectroscopic features. SDSS u, g, r, i, and z passband photometry of all EVCC galaxies was performed using Source Extractor. We compare the EVCC galaxies with the VCC in terms of morphology, spatial distribution, and luminosity function. The EVCC defines a comprehensive galaxy sample covering a wider range in galaxy density that is significantly different from the inner region of the Virgo cluster. It will be the foundation for forthcoming galaxy evolution studies in the extended Virgo cluster region, complementing ongoing and planned Virgo cluster surveys at various wavelengths.

Cluster-based routing is high energy consumption of cluster head nodes. A recent approach to resolving the problem is the dynamic cluster technique that periodically re-selects cluster head nodes to distribute energy consumption of the sensor nodes. However, the dynamic clustering technique has a problem that repetitive construction of clustering consumes the more energies. This paper proposes a solution to the problems described above from the energy efficiency perspective. The round-robin cluster header(RRCH) technique, which fixes the initially structured cluster and sequentially selects cluster head nodes, is suggested for solving the energy consumption problem regarding repetitive cluster construction. A simulation result were compared with the performances of two of the most widely used conventional techniques, the LEACH(Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy) and HEED(Hybrid, Energy Efficient, Distributed Clustering) algorithms, based on energy consumption, remaining energy for each node and uniform distribution. The evaluation confirmed that in terms of energy consumption, the technique proposed in this paper was 26.5% and 20% more efficient than LEACH and HEED, respectively.
The elliptic random field is an extension to the Gaussian random field. We proved a theorem which characterizes the elliptic random field. We proposed a heuristic approach to derive an approximation to the distribution of the size of one connected component of its excursion set above a high threshold. We used this approximation to approximate the distribution of the largest cluster size. We used simulation to compare the approximation with the exact distribution.
