  • Using 74 galaxy clusters in the COSMOS field at 0.1 < z < 1.2, we calculate the environmental quenching timescale, defined as the time required after a galaxy is accreted by a cluster for it to stop star formation. Cluster candidates are selected as the overdensities with the surface number density exceeding the 4-σ. With the "delayed-then-rapid" quenching model, we can successfully reproduce the separation of the galaxies(star-forming, intermediate, and quiescent) on the NUV-R - R-J color plane comparing with the BC03 evolutionary track. With the mass growth rate of halo mass and the ratio of categorized galaxies, we can constratin the environmental quenching timescale ~ 2Gyr at z ~ 1. We will present the result as a function of redshift and compare them with dynamical timescale and gas depletion timescale.

  • A 150 kV gas cluster ion accelerator was constructed and the cluster sizes of $CO_2$ and $N_2O$ gases were measured using time-of-flight mast spectrometry. Through isolated cluster ion impact on a HOPG, hillock with 1 nm height and a few tenth m in diameter were found to be formed by an atomic force microscope. When monomer ion beams were irradiated on the hillocks existed on a ITO surface, they became sharper and the surface became rougher. But they changed into round-shaped ones by cluster ion irradiation and the surface became smooth after the irradiation of $5\times10^{-14}\textrm{cm}^2$ at 25 kV. As the cluster ion dose was varied, the change of surface morphology and roughness of Si was examined. At the lower dose, the density of hillocks and surface roughness were increased, called surface embossment process. And then after the critical dose at which the area of the formed hillocks equals to the unirradiated area, the sputtering from the hillocks was predominantly evolved, and dislocated atoms were diffused and filled among the valleys, called surface sputtering and smoothing process. At the higher ion dose, the surface consisting of loosely bounded atoms was effectively sputtered into the depth and etching phenomenon was happened, called surface etching process.

  • Macrozoobenthic community structure was studied on the mud-tidalflat around Mokpo coastal area, Korea, from September 1995 to May 1996. Ten sampling stations were chosen along the 1km transect with a 100 m intervals. Triple macrozoobenthos sampling were conducted with a stainless box core sampler (size $13{\times}22{\times}30$ cm) at each station on the seasonal basis. A total of 119 species of macrobenthos was sampled with a mean density 2,357 $ind./m^2$ and biomass of 180. 94 $g/m^2$ during the study period. Of these species, there were 51 species of mollusce (43%), 36 of crustaceans (30%), 27 of polychaetes (23%). Molluscs were density-dominant faunal group with a mean density of 1,804 $ind./m^2$, comprising of 75% of the total density of the benthic animals. It was followed by polychaetes with 347 $ind./m^2$ (15% of the total density). Molluscs were biomass-dominant faunal group with a mean biomass of 147.51 $g/m^2$ (82% of the total biomass). The number of species, abundance and biomass showed increasing trends toward the lower intertidal stations from the higher stations. Major dominant species were Musculista senhousia (bivalve), Capitellidae spp. (polychaetes) with a density of 1,640 $ind./m^2$ and 179 $ind./m^2$ , respectively. The density of M. senhousia was more than 63% of the total density of benthic organism on the tidal area. Small gastropod Cerithideopsilla umumriensis was another dominant epifaunal species between st.1 and 2 with a mean density of 100 $ind./m^2$. Cluster analysis showed that the benthic community could be divided into three stational groups, that is, upper, middle and lower groups by the exposure duration.

  • There are many types of clustering algorithms such as centroid, hierarchical, or density-based methods. Each algorithm has unique data grouping principles, which creates different varieties of clusters. Ordering Points To Identify the Clustering Structure (OPTICS) is a well-known density-based algorithm to analyze arbitrary shaped and varying density clusters, but the obtained clusters only correlate loosely. Hierarchical agglomerative clustering (HAC) reveals a hierarchical structure of clusters, but is unable to clearly find non-convex shaped clusters. In this paper, we provide a novel hierarchy generation framework and application which can aid users by combining the advantages of the two clustering methods.

  • Despite poorly documented species delimitation and unresolved taxonomic nomenclature, four species of Symplocos (S. coreana, S purnifolia, S sawafutagi, and S. tanakana) have been described in Korea. In this study, we carried a comparative wood anatomy analysis of all four species of Korean Symplocos to understand the wood anatomical variations among them. The results of this study indicated that Korean Symplocos are comparatively indistinguishable in terms of their qualitative wood features, except for exclusively uniseriate rays present in S. purnifolia instead of uniseriate to multiseriate in other three species. Nevertheless, differences are noticed in quantitative wood variables such as the vessel density, vessel size, and ray density. The vessel density of S. purnifolia is more than twice as high as those of S. sawafutagi and S. tanakana. In contrast, the vessel circumference and diameter on both plants of S. sawafutagi and S. tanakana is nearly twice as large as those of S. purnifolia. Symplocos coreana has characteristic intermediacy between these two groups in terms of vessel features and is closer to S. purnifolia in terms of its ray density level. A cluster analysis based on a paired group (unweighted pair-group method with the arithmetic mean, UPGMA) algorithm using the Euclidean similarity index clearly differentiates S. purnifolia from the remaining species, representing the first branch of the phenogram.

  • We investigated the mesozooplankton community structure during autumn in the southern Yellow Sea. Mesozooplankton density generally ranged from 352 to 2,954 ind. m-3 and varied according to different sampling stations. The copepod Paracalanus parvus s.l. and its copepodites dominated in the communities, corresponding to 57.3% in density of the total. Surface and water-column averaged salinity were positively correlated with density of total mesozooplankton, copepods and a few dominant species, and the tunicate Thalia rhomboides was negatively related to chlorophyll-a concentration. The mesozooplankton community of the study area was divided into three groups according to the cluster analysis using species composition and density: one in the northern coastal region, another in the northern offshore region, and the other in the south. The most significant indicator species for each of the groups were Labidocera euchaeta in the northern coastal region, T. rhomboides in the northern offshore region, and Themisto sp. juveniles in the south. This study provides recent data on the characteristics of the mesozooplankton community in the southern Yellow Sea, which may be valuable for gaining a better understanding of changes in the pelagic ecosystem of the Yellow Sea.

  • We investigated the spring and summer community structure of meiobenthos in a tidal-falt near Iwon, Korea, in 2002 and 2003. In total, 12 meiofaunal groups were found in the study area among which nematodes were the most dominant. Benthic foraminiferans, harpacticoid copepods, polychaetes, and crustacean nauplli were also dominant groups at all sites. The total density of meiobenthos at each station was be 246-2,177 ind./$10cm^2$. As the depth of sediment increased, the density of meiobenthos at each station gradually decreased. Changes in the vertical distribution of meiobenthos in the study area occurred mainly near the sediment surface (0-1 cm). Generally, between spring and summer the density of nematodes increased, and the density of other dominant meiofaunal groups (benthic harpacticoids, crustacean nauplii, benthic foraminiferans) decreased near the sediment trap the control site of sediment traps compared to that at the control site. The results of cluster and multidimensional scaling plots indicate that the meiofaunal community changed following construction of a low artificial wood groin structure.

  • Symplocos Jacq. including about 350 species is the sole isolated genus of the family Symplocaceae. Despite poorly documented species delimitation and unresolved taxonomic nomenclature four species of Symplocos (S. coreana, S purnifolia, S sawafutagi, and S. tanakana) have been described in Korea. In this study, we carried the comparative wood anatomy of all the four species of Korean Symplocos to understand the wood anatomical variations within these four species. The result of this study indicated that Korean Symplocos are comparatively indistinguishable in terms of their qualitative wood features except for exclusively uniseriate rays present in S. purnifolia instead of uni- to- multiseriate in other three species. However, discrepancies are observed in quantitative wood variables such as vessel density, vessel size, and ray density. The vessel density of S. purnifolia (highest among the four species) is more than two times higher than the S. sawafutagi (lowest among the four species) and S. tanakana. On the other hand, vessel size is likewise reverse to the vessel number relationships i. e. vessel circumference and diameter in both planes of S. sawafutagi and S. tanakana is almost twice a larger than S. purnifolia. Interestingly, S. coreana remains in between of these two groups in terms of vessel features and closer to S. purnifolia in terms of ray density. The cluster analysis based on the paired group (UPGMA) algorithm using the Euclidean similarity index clearly differentiates S. purnifolia from the rest of the taxa representing the first isolated clade of the tree.

  • With the increasing size and universalization of lithium-ion batteries, the development of cathode materials has emerged as a critical issue. The energy density of 18650 cylindrical batteries had more than doubled from 230 Wh/l in 1991 to 500 Wh/l in 2005. The energy capacity of most products ranges from 450 to 500Wh/l or from 150 to 190 Wh/kg. Product developments are focusing on high capacity, safety, saved production cost, and long life. As Co is expensive among the cathode active materials $LiCoO_2$, to increase energy capacity while decreasing the use of Co, composites such as $LiMn_2O_4$, $LiCo_{1/3}N_{i1/3}Mn_{1/3}O_2$, $LiNi_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}O_2$, and $LiFePO_4$-C (167 mA/g) are being developed. Furthermore, many studies are being conducted to improve the performance of battery materials to meet the requirement of large capacity output density such as 500Wh/kg for electric bicycles, 1,500Wh/kg for electric tools, and 4,000~5,000Wh/kg for EV and PHEV. As new cathodes active materials with high energy capacity such as graphene-sulfur composite cathode materials with 600 Ah/kg and the molecular cluster for secondary battery with 320 Ah/kg are being developed these days, their commercializations are highly anticipated.

  • The relationship of zooplankton communities and distributions of copepods as indicator species to environmental variables, such as temperature, salinity, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) was studied in Pusan Harbor in October 1990 and January, April and July 1991. Zooplankton communities were analysed by using cluster analysis and species diversity index. Four groups of copepods as indicator species were Acrocalanus gacilis, Euchaeta plana, pareuchaeta russell and Pleuromamma gracilis as the oceanic warm water species; Cemtropages abdominalis as the neritic cold water species; Meridian lucens as the oceanic cold water species Acartia omorii as the polluted water species. the offshore waters of Pusan harbor was dominated by the oceanic warm water species in October and by the neritic cold water species in January and April. This area showed the low values of COD and Tin. the inshore waters of Pusan harbor, where the high values of cod And Tin and the low value of diversity were recorder was represented by A.. omorii. Cluster analysis of the zooplankton community revealed two or three regional areas in Pusan harbor. Area I, the offshore area of Pusan harbor, not only was represented high species diversity and low density of A. omorii but also was dominated copepods in zooplankton roups. Areas II and III were grouped horizontally from offshore to inshore of Pusan harbor. Area II was showed intermediate values in diversity, density of A. omorii and percentage composition of copepods. Area III was revealed the lowest diversity, density of A.omorii and percentage composition of Cladocerans.Coperpoda was a dominant zooplankton group in each area during the study periods except two special cases.Area II was dominated by Noctiluca scintillans in April and Area III was occupied by Cladocerans in July.Distribution of Indicator species and areas demarcated based on cluster analysis showed a close relationship with environments.
