  • Detecting and segmenting diffuse targets in laser ranging data is a critical problem for tactical reconnaissance. In this study, we propose a new method that facilitates the characterization of diffuse irregularly shaped objects using "spin images," i.e., local 2D histograms of laser returns oriented in 3D space, and a clustering process. The proposed "cluster-based spin imaging" method resolves the problem of using standard spin images for diffuse targets and it eliminates much of the computational complexity that characterizes the production of conventional spin images. The direct processing of pre-segmented laser points, including internal points that penetrate through a diffuse object's topmost surfaces, avoids some of the requirements of the approach used at present for spin image generation, while it also greatly reduces the high computational time overheads incurred by searches to find correlated images. We employed 3D airborne range data over forested terrain to demonstrate the effectiveness of this method in discriminating the different geometric structures of individual tree clusters. Our experiments showed that cluster-based spin images have the potential to separate classes in terms of different ages and portions of tree crowns.

  • Currently, research on smart factories is steadily being carried out in terms of implementation strategies and considerations in construction. Various studies have not been conducted on companies that introduced smart factories. This study conducted a questionnaire survey for SMEs applying the basic stage of smart factory. And the cluster analysis was conducted to examine the characteristics of the company. In addition, we conducted Decision Tree and Naive Bay to examine how the characteristics of a company are derived and compare the results. As a result of the cluster analysis, it was confirmed that the group was divided into the high satisfaction group and the low satisfaction group. The decision tree and the Naive Bay analysis showed that the higher satisfaction group has high productivity.

  • In this paper, we propose a distributed search of a cluster robot using tree structure in an unknown environment. In the proposed method, the cluster robot divides the unknown environment into 4 regions by using the LRF (Laser Range Finder) sensor information and divides the maximum detection distance into 4 regions, and detects feature points of the obstacle. Also, we define the detected feature points as Voronoi Generators of the Voronoi Diagram and apply the Voronoi diagram. The Voronoi Space, the Voronoi Partition, and the Voronoi Vertex, components of Voronoi, are created. The generated Voronoi partition is the path of the robot. Voronoi vertices are defined as each node and consist of the proposed tree structure. The root of the tree is the starting point, and the node with the least significant bit and no children is the target point. Finally, we demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method through several simulations.

  • This paper presents an application layer multicast tree constructing algorithm to minimize the average time delay from the sender to end-systems for the effective real-time media delivery. Simultaneously, the proposed algorithm takes into account the computing power and the network condition of each end-system as a control variable and thus avoids the undesirable case that loads are concentrated to only several end-systems. The multicast tree is constructed by clustering technique and modified Dijkstra's algorithm in two steps, i.e. tree among proxy-senders and tree in each cluster. By the experimental results, we show that the proposed algorithm can provide an effective solution.

  • Soft faults are inherent in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) due to external and internal errors. The failure of processes in a protocol stack are caused by errors on various layers. In this work, impact of errors and channel misbehavior on process execution is investigated to provide an error classification mechanism. Considering implementation of WSN protocol stack, inter-process correlations of stacked and peer layer processes are modeled. The proposed model is realized through local and global decision trees for fault diagnosis. A hybrid framework is proposed to implement local decision tree on sensor nodes and global decision tree on diagnostic cluster head. Local decision tree is employed to diagnose critical failures due to errors in stacked processes at node level. Global decision tree, diagnoses critical failures due to errors in peer layer processes at network level. The proposed model has been analyzed using fault tree analysis. The framework implementation has been done in Castalia. Simulation results validate the inter-process correlation model-based fault diagnosis. The hybrid framework distributes processing load on sensor nodes and diagnostic cluster head in a decentralized way, reducing communication overhead.

  • In this paper GFI (Generalized Fuzzy Isodata) and FI (Fuzzy Isodata) algorithms are studied and applied to the tire tread pattern classification problem. GFI algorithm which repeatedly grouping the partitioned cluster depending on the fuzzy partition matrix is general form of GI algorithm. In the constructing the binary tree using GFI algorithm cluster validity, namely, whether partitioned cluster is feasible or not is checked and construction of the binary tree is obtained by FDH clustering algorithm. These algorithms show the good performance in selecting the prototypes of each patterns and classifying patterns. Directions of edge in the preprocessed image of tire tread pattern are selected as features of pattern. These features are thought to have useful information which well represents the characteristics of patterns.

  • A large number of in-vitro experiments on the inhibition of kinases and pretenses are reported in literature, and compiled by ProLINT database. Using this powerful wealth of knowledge, we have carried our an analysis of ligand specificity of these two classes of proteins. Each of the pretenses and kinases included in the database has been assigned a consensus ligand fragment signature, based on the available information about its interaction with different ligands. A set of 43 fragments efficiently represent every ligand. We have then organized the consensus fragment signatures for every protein in form of a cluster-tree diagram. This tree is also constructed from other sequence, structure and physical considerations. Cluster-cluster comparison between these analyzes provide a valuable information about ligand specific interactions and similarities between proteins.

  • With limited resources, proper allocation of the national R&D budget is very crucial matter for reinforcing the national competence, and the importance of selecting strategic R&D fields have been increasingly emphasized by technology policy-makers and CTOs. This paper deals with technology relevance/cluster analysis, which measures technological dependency and relevancy among technologies, and how it can be used for selecting the strategic R&D fields especially satisfying SMEs(small and medium enterprises)' specific needs. As a result of this study, technology-product tree composed of 7 major technology fields, 22 clusters, 41 groups, 335 core-need technologies and hundreds of related business items are produced that can be used for designing SMEs' R&D/business portfolio as well as R&D investment decision-making of the Ministry of Small and Medium Business Administration.

  • This paper proposes a c-fuzzy model tree using partial least square method to predict the Chlorophyll-a concentration in each zone. First, cluster centers are calculated by fuzzy clustering method using all input and output attributes. And then, each internal node is produced according to fuzzy membership values between centers and input attributes. Linear models are constructed by partial least square method considering input-output pairs remained in each internal node. The expansion of internal node is determined by comparing errors calculated in parent node with ones in child node, respectively. On the other hands, prediction is performed with a linear model haying the highest fuzzy membership value between input attributes and cluster centers in leaf nodes. To show the effectiveness of the proposed method, we have applied our method to water quality data set measured at several stations. Under various experiments, our proposed method shows better performance than conventional least square based model tree method.
