Star-forming Dwarf Galaxies in Filamentary Structures around the Virgo Cluster

  • We present the chemical properties of star-forming dwarf galaxies (SFDGs) in five filamentary structures (Leo II A, Leo II B, Leo Minor, Canes Venatici, and Virgo III) around the Virgo cluster using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey optical spectroscopic data and Galaxy Evolution Explorer ultraviolet photometric data. We investigate the relationship between stellar mass, gas-phase metallicity, and specific star formation rate (sSFR) of SFDGs in the Virgo filaments in comparison to those in the Virgo cluster and field. We find that, at a given stellar mass, SFDGs in the Virgo filaments show lower metallicity and higher sSFR than those in the Virgo cluster on average. We observe that SFDGs in the Virgo III filament show enhanced metallicities and suppressed star formation activities comparable to those in the Virgo cluster, whereas SFDGs in the other four filaments exhibit similar properties to the field counterparts. Moreover, about half of the galaxies in the Virgo III filament are found to be morphologically transitional dwarf galaxies that are supposed to be on the way to transforming into quiescent dwarf early-type galaxies. Based on the analysis of the galaxy perturbation parameter, we propose that the local environment represented by the galaxy interactions might be responsible for the contrasting features in "chemical pre-processing" found in the Virgo filaments.

  • Korea has relied on top down development method, in which companies, research and education institutions move into the industrial complexes established by the government. However, to improve local competitiveness, the paradigm is shifting from the government initiated industrial complex to the clusters based on the cooperative network of the region. Representative case is 'Samcheok-si Fire & Emergency industry cluster construction project' that begun in 2007. AHP technique analysis results on first-stage showed that priority was on policy and network elements, and the results of second-stage analysis show that priority was on Policy incentives to internationalize the cluster and strengthen link,. Cluster branding, Sharing of organizational culture to cope with changes in environment, Creation of group learning culture. The subject of this research is limited to Samcheok-si's the Fire and Emergency Industry cluster formation project. Therefore, the research area and standard should be expanded to increase generality in further researches.

Early-type Dwarf Galaxies in the Virgo Cluster: An Ultraviolet Perspective

  • Since the ultraviolet (UV) flux of an integrated population is a good tracer of recent star formation activities, UV observations provide an important constraint on star formation history (SFH) in galaxies. We present UV color-magnitude relations (CMRs) of early-type dwarf galaxies in the Virgo cluster, based on Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) UV data and the Extended Virgo Cluster Catalog (EVCC, Kim, S. in prep.). The EVCC covers an area 5.4 times larger (750 deg2) than the footprint of the classical Virgo cluster catalog by Binggeli and collaborators. We secure 1304 galaxies as members of the Virgo cluster and 526 galaxies of them are new objects not contained in the VCC. Morphological classification of galaxies in the EVCC is based on the optical image ("Primary Classification") and spectral feature ("Secondary Classification") of the SDSS data. We find that dwarf lenticular galaxies (dS0s) show a surprisingly distinct and tight locus separated from that of ordinary dwarf elliptical galaxies (dEs), which is not clearly seen in previous CMRs. The dS0s in UV CMRs follow a steeper sequence than dEs and show bluer UV-optical color at a given magnitude. Most early type dwarf galaxies with blue UV colors (FUV-r < 6 and NUV-r < 4) are identified as those showing spectroscopic hints of recent or ongoing star formation activities. We explore the observed CMRs with population models of a luminosity-dependent delayed exponential star formation history. The observed CMR of dS0s is well matched with models with relatively long delayed star formation. Our results suggest that dS0s are most likely transitional objects at the stage of subsequent transformation of late-type progenitors to ordinary red dEs in the cluster environment. In any case, UV photometry provides a powerful tool to disentangle the diverse subpopulations of early-type dwarf galaxies and uncover their evolutionary histories.

  • 본 연구는 멕시코의 산업 클러스터 발전에 대하여 멕시코 타마울리파스 주(州)의 전기-전자 클러스터(electric-electronics cluster)의 사례를 살펴보았다. 타마울리스파스 주(州)의 전기-전자 클러스터는 멕시코의 무역 자유화 이후에 증가한 다국적 기업 중심의 클러스터라고 할 수 있다. 연구 결과로서 타마울리파스 주(州)의 전기-전자 클러스터는 초기 형성 단계이며 다국적 기업의 공장인 마킬라 공장의 실제적인 수요가 관련 교육 및 인력 양성 등 클러스터 형성과 발전의 주요한 동인이 되고 있다. 지역 멕시칸 납품업체를 포함하는 일부 지역 경제 주체에 대해서는 클러스터에서 그 연계가 아직 강하지 않다. 본 연구에서는 타마울리파스 주(州)의 전기-전자 클러스터의 발전 방안에 대한 연구 결과도 제시된다.

무선 센서 네트워크에서 안전한 클러스터 구성 방안 (A Secure Cluster Formation Scheme in Wireless Sensor Networks)

  • 무선 센서 네트워크에서 클러스터 구조는 부하균형, 에너지 절약, 분산 키 관리와 같은 중요한 이점들을 유발한다. 네트워크를 클러스터 구조로 변경하기 위해서 센서들은 배치된 후에 클러스터 구성 프로토콜을 실행해야 한다. 이때 일부 노드들이 공격자에 의해 오염될 수 있으며 이들이 클러스터 구성 프로토콜에 따르지 않으면 임의의 클러스터에서 멤버십의 비일치가 발생한다. 이러한 경우에 클러스터들은 분할되게 되며 이에 따라 클러스터 수는 증가하고 클러스터내의 멤버수가 줄어드는 문제점이 발생한다. 본 논문에서는 오염노드들의 프로토콜 비협조에 잘 대처하는 기법을 제안한다. 먼저, 제안방법은 클러스터 내에서 임의의 두 노드 간에 거리가 최대 2홉이 되는 2홉 클러스터들을 생성한다. 게다가 제안방법은 오염노드에 의한 클러스터들의 분할을 막기 위해 2홉 거리의 노드에 의한 검증을 이용한다. 또한 제안방법은 노드들의 에너지 소모를 감소시키기 위하여 주로 방송전송들을 이용한다. 실험결과들은 제안방법이 다른 방법에 비해 클러스터 수를 감소시키며 좀 더 안전하고 에너지 효율적임을 보여주었다.

Abell 2261: a fossil galaxy cluster in a transition phase

  • Fossil groups of galaxies have characteristic features of a dominant central elliptical galaxy (${\Delta}M_{12}$ > 2 in $0.5R_{vir}$) embedded in highly relaxed X-ray halo, which indicates dynamically stable and evolved systems. These are thought as a final stage of the evolution of galaxy groups in the hierarchical structure formation scenario. However, the formation and evolution of fossil clusters are still unclear due to lack of detailed studies. Therefore, we perform a kinematic research of a known fossil cluster Abell 2261 (A2261 hereafter) using spectroscopic data of 589 galaxies in the A2261 field. Even though A2261 is known as a fossil cluster, previous studies found several unusual features such as quite high X-ray entropy for a stable cluster, and an elongated shape, which are not expected in standard fossil clusters. Using the caustic method, we identify cluster member galaxies and discover a second bright galaxy (${\Delta}M_{12}=1.68$) at ${\sim}1.5R_{vir}$. The presence of such a bright galaxy can break the current fossil state of cluster in the near future. In addition, with two independent substructure finding methods, we confirm that the previously detected elongated galaxy distribution of the cluster is a real feature. These findings indicate that A2261 is not in a fully stable state, unlike the existing fossil definition diagnostic. We require a more stringent criterion for the fossil definition to represent a genuinely final stage of cluster evolution.

물산업 클러스터 육성정책의 해외사례와 시사점 (Foreign Cases on Water Industry Cluster Formation Policies and Its Implication)

  • 세계 물산업 시장규모는 400~500조 원에 달하고, 21세기 최대 성장산업이 될 것으로 전망된다. 이스라엘과 싱가포르는 물 부족 국가임에도 불구하고, 중앙정부와 수자원공사가 물산업을 육성하기 위한 적극적인 정책을 추진함으로써 세계적인 경쟁력을 갖추게 되었다. 이스라엘은 정부의 적극적인 지원 하에 수자원공사(Mekorot)를 중심으로 물산업 클러스터 구축정책을 추진해왔으며, 200여개의 기업을 중심으로 8천명의 고용을 창출하고, 2008년에 1조원을 상회하는 수출을 달성하였다. 싱가포르는 일찍이 물산업의 성장성을 인식하고, 범정부적 지원을 바탕으로 수자원공사(PUB)가 물산업 육성의 핵심역할을 수행하고 있으며, 50여개의 기업이 집적되어 5천명의 고용을 창출하고, 2003년에 4천 억원을 상회하는 수출을 달성하였으며, 그동안 축적된 기술력을 바탕으로 2015년까지 글로벌 물산업 허브(Global Hydrohub)로 발전하기 위한 전략을 수립하고 있다. 향후 중앙정부는 물산업의 성장성과 발전가능성에 주목하고, 물산업 관련 업무를 통합하여 관리하고, 물산업 육성을 위한 다양한 정책을 개발하고 재정을 투자할 필요가 있다. 또한 지방정부와 한국수자원공사는 물산업 클러스터를 구축하기 위해 지역특성을 고려한 구체적인 정책을 적극적으로 추진할 필요가 있다.

On the Formation of Red-sequence Galaxies in Rich Abell Clusters at z ${\lesssim}$ 0.1

  • The aim of this study was to explore the role of galaxy mergers on the formation and evolution of galaxies in galaxy clusters. For this purpose, u', g', r' deep optical imaging and multi-object spectroscopic observation were done for four rich Abell clusters at z ${\lesssim}$ 0.1 (A119, A2670, A3330, and A389) with a MOSAIC 2 CCD and Hydra spectrograph mounted on a Blanco 4-m telescope at CTIO. With the deep images, we found that about 25% of the bright red-sequence galaxies exhibited post-merger signatures in a cluster environment. This fraction was much higher than what was expected from the results of the field environment (-35%, van Dokkum 2005) and significantly low on-going merger fractions (about one-fifth of the field) appeared in the clusters currently. Taking advantage of the most up-to-date semi-analytic model, the results indicate that most of the post-merger galaxies may have carried over their merger features from their previous halo environment. All the brightest cluster galaxies in our cluster samples revealed faint structures in their halos as well as multiple nuclei in their centers seen in the deep optical images. We suggest that the mass of the BCGs increased mainly though major mergers at recent epochs based on their post-merger signatures and the large gaps in the total magnitudes between the BCGs and the second-rank BCGs. A UV bright tidal tail and tidal dwarf galaxy (TDG) candidates around the post-merger galaxy, NGC 4922, were discovered in the outskirts of the Coma cluster using the GALEX UV data. We did two-component stellar population modeling for the TDG candidates and the results indicate that they are an early form of dwarf galaxies frequently found around massive early-type galaxies in clusters. In conclusion, we suggest that the mergers of galaxies are an important driving force behind galaxy formation and evolution in cluster environments even until recent epochs.

We also find that the UV CMRs of dEs in the outer cluster region are slightly steeper than that of their counterparts in the inner region, due to the existence of faint, blue dEs in the outer region. We explore the observed CMRs with population models of a luminosity-dependent delayed exponential star formation history. We confirm that the feature of delayed star formation of early-type dwarf galaxies in the Virgo cluster is strongly correlated with their morphology and environment. The observed CMR of dS0s is well matched by models with relatively long delayed star formation. Our results suggest that dS0s are most likely transitional objects at the stage of subsequent transformation of late-type progenitors to ordinary red dEs in the cluster environment, In any case, UV photometry provides a powerful tool to disentangle the diverse subpopulations of early-type dwarf galaxies and uncover their evolutionary histories.

The evolution of a late-type galaxy in a Coma-like cluster

  • We study the evolution of a late-type galaxy (LTG) in a rich cluster environment by using N-body/SPH simulations. To do that we perform a set of simulations of a LTG falling in a Coma-like cluster and also the LTG colliding with early-type galaxies (ETGs) multiple times in the cluster environment. We use a catalog of the Coma cluster in order to estimate the typical number of collisions and the closest approach distances that a LTG would experience in the cluster. We investigate the cold gas depletion and star formation quenching of our LTG model influenced by the hot cluster gas as well as the hot halo gas of the colliding ETGs.
