The flow of cooling water in a passive containment cooling system (PCCS), used to remove heat released in design basis accidents from a concrete containment of light water nuclear power plant, was conducted in order to investigate the thermo-fluid equilibrium among many parallel tubes of PCCS. Numerical simulations of the subcooled boiling flow within a coolant loop of a PCCS, which will be installed in innovative pressurized-water reactor (PWR), were conducted using the commercially available computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software ANSYS-CFX. Shear stress transport (SST) and the RPI model were used for turbulence closure and subcooled flow boiling, respectively. As the first step, the simplified geometry of PCCS with 36 tubes was modeled in order to reduce computational resource. Even and uneven thermal loading conditions were applied at the outer walls of parallel tubes for the simulation of the coolant flow in the PCCS at the initial phase of accident. It was observed that the natural circulation maintained in single-phase for all even and uneven thermal loading cases. For uneven thermal loading cases, coolant velocity in each tube were increased according to the applied heat flux. However, the flows were mixed well in the header and natural circulation of the whole cooling loop was not affected by uneven thermal loading significantly.
This paper presents the numerical results of a simulation of the free surface flow around a blunt bow ship model and focuses on the validation of the proposed method with a brief investigation of the relation between the resistance and free surface behavior. A finite volume method based on the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) approach is used to solve the governing flow equations, where the free surface, including wave breaking,is captured by using a two-phase Level-Set (LS) method. For turbulence closure, a two equation k-${\varepsilon}$ model with the standard wall function technique is used. Finally, the numerical results are compared with the available experimental data, showing good agreement.

An analysis of the dynamics of a mechanical monoleaflet heart valve prosthesis in the closing phase is presented. Employing the moment equilibrium principles on the occluder motion and the squeeze film dynamics of the fluid between the occluder and the guiding strut at the instant of impact, the velocity of the occluder tip and the impact force were computed. The dynamics of fluid being squeezed between the occluder and the guiding struts is accounted for by Reynold's equation. The effect of the fluid being squeezed between the occluder and the guiding strut was to reduce the velocity of the occluder tip at the instant of valve closure as well as dampen the fluttering of the occluder before coming to rest in the fully closed position. The squeeze film fluid pressure changed rapidly from a high positive value to a relatively large negative value in less than 1 msec. The results of this study may be extended for the analysis of cavitation inception, mechanical stresses on the formed elements and valve components as well as to estimate the endurance limits of the prosthetic valves.
In this paper, the cavitating flows around a hydrofoil have been numerically investigated by using a 2-d multi-phase RANS flow solver based on pseudo-compressibility and a homogeneous mixture model on unstructured meshes. For this purpose, a vertex-centered finite-volume method was utilized in conjunction with 2nd-order Roe's FDS to discretize the inviscid fluxes. The viscous fluxes were computed based on central differencing. The Spalart-Allmaras one equation model was employed for the closure of turbulence. A dual-time stepping method and the Gauss-Seidel iteration were used for unsteady time integration. The phase change rate between the liquid and vapor phases was determined by Merkle's cavitation model based on the difference between local and vapor pressure. Steady state calculations were made for the modified NACA66 hydrofoil at several flow conditions. Good agreements were obtained between the present results and the experiment for the pressure coefficient on a hydrofoil surface. Additional calculation was made for cloud cavitation around the hydrofoil. The observation of the vapor structure, such as cavity size and shape, was made, and the flow characteristics around the cavity were analyzed. Good agreements were obtained between the present results and the experiment for the frequency and the Strouhal number of cavity oscillation.

This paper presents the dimensionless wall distance, y+ effect on SST turbulent model for wind turbine blade. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Phase VI wind turbine was used for the study, which the wind tunnel and structural test data has publicly available. The near wall treatment and turbulent characteristics have important role for proper CFD simulation. Most of the CFD development in this area is focused on advanced turbulence model closures including second moment closure models, and so called Low-Reynolds (low-Re) number and two-layer turbulence models. However, in many cases CFD aerodynamic predictions based on these standard models still show a large degree of uncertainty, which can be attributed to the use of the $\epsilon$-equation as the turbulence scale equation and the associated limitations of the near wall treatment. The present paper demonstrates the y+ definition effect on SST (Shear Stress Transport) turbulent model with advanced automatic near wall treatment model and Gamma theta transitional model for transition from lamina to turbulent flow using commercial ANSYS-CFX. In all cases the SST model shows to be superior, as it gives more accurate predictions and is less sensitive to grid variations.
In this paper we describe current activities on the project Multi-Scale Modeling and Analysis of convective boiling (MSMA), conducted jointly by the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) and the Swiss Nuclear Utilities (Swissnuclear). The long-term aim of the MSMA project is to formulate improved closure laws for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations for prediction of convective boiling and eventually of the Critical Heat Flux (CHF). As boiling is controlled by the competition of numerous phenomena at various length and time scales, a multi-scale approach is employed to tackle the problem at different scales. In the MSMA project, the scales on which we focus range from the CFD scale (macro-scale), bubble size scale (meso-scale), liquid micro-layer and triple interline scale (micro-scale), and molecular scale (nano-scale). The current focus of the project is on micro- and meso-scales modeling. The numerical framework comprises a highly efficient, parallel DNS solver, the PSI-BOIL code. The code has incorporated an Immersed Boundary Method (IBM) to tackle complex geometries. For simulation of meso-scales (bubbles), we use the Constrained Interpolation Profile method: Conservative Semi-Lagrangian $2^{nd}$ order (CIP-CSL2). The phase change is described either by applying conventional jump conditions at the interface, or by using the Phase Field (PF) approach. In this work, we present selected results for flows in complex geometry using the IBM, selected bubbly flow simulations using the CIP-CSL2 method and results for phase change using the PF approach. In the subsequent stage of the project, the importance of effects of nano-scale processes on the global boiling heat transfer will be evaluated. To validate the models, more experimental information will be needed in the future, so it is expected that the MSMA project will become the seed for a long-term, combined theoretical and experimental program.

This study aims to investigate the effects of the microstructures and nodule type on the fatigue characteristics of cast iron. Fatigue tests were carried out in tension-tension mode using a servo-hydraulic testing machine with load control mode operating at a frequency of 15 Hz. The tests were conducted at stress ratio R=Kmin/Kmax, of 0.1. Initial crack ${\Dalta}K$ values were highly performed with increase in tensile strength of DCI fatigue specimens. ${\Dalta}K_{th}$ region, fatigue crack propagation was primarily advanced through cell boundary and in periphery of near nodule. Fatigue crack propagation rate of D2 consisted with 2Phase(Ferrite+Pearlite) was slow due to crack closure enhanced by crack deflection and occurred crack branching. The generation of crack branch was occurred due to interaction of crack-nodule. At Threshold and Paris zone, the fractographs of the fatigue fracture surface for DCI show typical striations of a ductile fracture and isolated cleavage planes near graphite. The effect of microstructure on fatigue crack propagation of GC strongly depends on the type of flake. The generation of crack branch occurred due to interaction of crack-nodule. The fractographs of the fatigue fracture surface for GC show cleavage plane along the flake graphite.
This study developed an analysis model of estimating fatigue damage using the linear elastic fracture mechanics method. Stress history occurring to an element when a truck passed over a bridge was defined as block loading and crack closure theory explaining load interaction effect was applied. Stress range frequency analysis considering dead load stress and crack opening was done. Probability of stress range frequency distribution was applied and the probability distribution parameters were estimated. The Monte Carlo simulation of generating the probability various of distribution was performed. The probability distribution of failure block numbers was obtained. With this the fatigue reliability of an element not occurring in failure could be calculated. The failure block number divided by average daily truck traffic remains the life of a day. Fatigue reliability analysis model was carried out for the welding member of cross beam flange and vertical stiffener of steel box bridge using the proposed model. Consequently, a 3.8% difference was observed between the remaining life in the peak analysis method and in the proposed analysis model. The proposed analysis model considered crack closure phase and crack retard.

The time-dependent frequency and energy of free vibration of the spagetti problem, that is the axially moving continuum with time-varying length, are investigated. Exact expressions for the natural frequency and time-varying vibration energy are derived by dealing with traveling waves. The vibration period increases with increasing length, but the free vibration energy decreases. When the string undergoes retraction, the vibration energy increases with time. The free response of the time-varying string is represented by superposing two traveling waves.

Time-dependent frequency and energy of free vibration of the Spagetti problem, that is the axially moving continuum with time-varying length, are investigated. Exact expressions for the natural frequency and time-varying vibration energy are derived by dealing with traveling waves. When the string length is increased, the vibration period increases, but the free vibration energy varies as a function of both translating velocity and boundary velocity of the continuum. However, when the string undergoes retraction, the vibration energy increases with time, String tension together with non-zero instantaneous velocity at the moving boundary results in energy variation.
