  • Elbows with various shapes of local wall thinning were numerically analyzed by finite element method to get load-displacement curves and the maximum loads. Results were compared with the experimental data obtained by another study. Elastic-plastic analysis were carried out under the combined loading conditions of internal pressure and in-plane bending loads. Two types of bending loads were considered such as elbow opening mode and elbow closing mode. Also, two different wall thinning geometries were modeled. Wall thinning area located extrados or intrados of elbow inner surface was considered. Longitudinal and circumferential lengths of the thinning area and the thinned thickness were varied for analysis. The results showed that the maximum load of the wall-thinned elbow decreased with increasing of the circumferential thinning length and the thinned thickness in both of extrados and intrados thinning locations in both loading types. The maximum load obtained by the analysis were in good agreement with the experimentally measured maximum load with the same wall thinning type and dimensions. This supports accuracy of the analysis results obtained in this study.

  • Increase in the utilization rate of recycled paper and closing level of papermaking system increased the problem associated with stickies that include decrease in process runnability and product quality. It is required to establish a process for removing the micro stickies to solve the problems associated with stickies. In this study, the application of flotation process as a method to remove micro stickies was examined. Model micro stickies (MMS) were prepared using microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA), and the influence of three nonionic surfactants on the removal efficiency of MMS from flotation process was examined. Also the effect of surfactants on the deposition of micro stickies that remaining in the papermaking wet end onto wire was examined. Removal efficiency of MMS by flotation was increased when the proportion of nonionic surfactant with propylene oxide (PO) type hydrophilic tail was increased and stock pH was 7. It was suggested that this nonionic surfactant minimized the increase of surface energy of hydrophobic MMS. The MMS with high hydrophobicity remaining in the papermaking system, however, would cause more serious deposition problems on papermaking wet end. Therefore, it is of great importance to increase the removal efficiency of MMS in flotation process for the prevention of papermaking system contamination caused by stickies deposition.

  • In this paper, 3-D reciprocating compressor is taken into flow-structure interaction analysis. The full cycle process consisted of cylinder expansion and compression has been modeled without considering flow leakage through cylinder wall. Fully-coupled FSI analysis of this compressor model was iteratively solved and gives sufficient result with the experimental test. The study is emphasized to thoroughly investigate discharge valve motion, opening and closing, in order to determine discharge valve region which is prone to have high effective stress. The cylinder pressure is successfully validated before conducting impact analyses between discharge valve and other susceptible supported structure. Velocity profile has been obtained in FSI analysis is used as initial condition to carry out further impact analyses. Stress result of discharge valve and valve spring gives preliminary estimation of higher stress area due to its impact phenomena.

  • An experimental study has been conducted to investigate the effects of an ultrasonic standing-wave field to the behavior of methane/air premixed flame. Visualization technique utilizing the schlieren method was employed for the observation of premixed flame behavior. The shape of flame front and local flame velocity were measured according to the variation of reactants pressure and chamber opening/closing condition. The flame front was distorted and severely deformed to a lotus-type flame by the interaction of ultrasonic standing-wave and the reflection wave coming from an end wall of reactor.

  • Craniofacial dysostosis is considered to be one of rarely observed syndromes characterized by premature closing of all cranial sutures. The first patient was a 4-year-old male infant who had been complaining of empyema. Clinical findings showed exophthalmos, hypertelorism and facial asymmetry. Conventional radiographs demonstrated abscence of cranial sutures and underdeveloped maxilla. CT scan demonstrated the digital impressions of the inner surface of the cranial vault, enlarged and depressed sella turcica. The second patient was a 2-year-old female infant who had been complaining of facial deformity. Clinical findings showed hypertelorism and underdeveloped maxilla. Radiographs showed premature synostosis of all cranial sutures, depressed and enlarged sella turcica, and hypoplastic maxilla. 3 years after operation, her look improved. However, resurgery may be considered to decreasing intracranial pressure and for correction of facial deformity. Two interesting cases showing ‘cloverleaf’ skulls were presented.

  • Vent-relief valve performed as a safety-valve combination for liquid propellant feeding system of space launch vehicle, which can vent the vaporized oxygen vapor during both filling cryogenic oxidizer into tank and flight. We have designed vent-relief model by using the AMESim code to predict dynamic characteristics and simulate pneumatic behavior of valve. To validate valve model we have compared by opening time in vent model, and opening/closing pressure by mathematical methods and improved the accuracy through numerical flow analysis by using FLUENT code. In this study, we had verified design parameters and analyzed operating performances. We can use these analysis results to precedent development study on propellant feeding system of Korea Space Launch Vehicle.

  • To design an optimum engine intake system, a flow model for the intake manifold was developed by the finite difference method. The flow in the intake manifold was one-dimensional, and the finite difference equations were derived from governing equations of flow, continuity, momentum and energy. The thermodynamic properties of the cylinder were found by the first law of thermodynamics, and the boundary conditions were formulated using steady flow model. By comparing the calculated results with experimental data, the appropriate boundary conditions and convergence limits for the flow model were established. From this model, the optimum manifold lengths at different engine operating conditions were investigated. The optimum manifold length became shorter when the engine speeds were increased. The effect of intake valve timings on inlet air mass was also studied by this model. Advancing intake valve opening decreased inlet air mass slightly, and the optimum intake valve closing was found. The difference in inlet air mass between cylinders was very small in this engine.

  • A turbine control system which has been operated for years in a nuclear power plant was retrofitted with a newly developed digital control system. After completion of the retrofit, turbine valve tests were performed to ensure the integrity of each valve's control function. The sequence of each valve test is composed of a closing process and a reopening process. To minimize megawatt variation which normally occurs during the test sequence, we employed a kind of compensator algorithm in the new digital control system which also have been used in the old system. There were difficulties finding optimal parameter settings for our new compensator algorithm because the power plant didn't allow us to perform necessary tuning procedures while the turbine is on load operation. Therefore an alternative measure for the compensator tuning which is independent of the turbine actual operation had to be implemented. So, a process model for the test was required to overcome this situation. We analyzed the operation data of the test and implemented the process model by use of input and output variable relations. Also we verified the process model by use of another condition's operating data. The result shows that the output of model is similar to the actual operation data.

  • Recently, radionuclide angiocardiogram is one of the most common procedure for assessment of ventricular performance due to its distinctive advantages such as safety, accuracy, and ease of repeated studies. Also, measurement and comparison between pre and postoperative left ventricular ejection fraction [LVEF] are meaningful for assessing the severity of myocardial damage which occurred during open heart surgery and the status of myocardial recovery. We obtained pre and post operative LVEF using radionuclide angiocardiogram on 30 patients composed of atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect, cyanotic congenital heart disease, and valvular heart disease who undergone the open heart surgery from March to august 1984. The study revealed that ventricular septal defect and mitral valvular heart disease showed 8.1% and 6.2% decreases of postoperative LVEF, respectively. But, there are little increases of postoperative LVEF in the atrial septal defect and cyanotic congenital heart disease. In ventricular septal defect, each group of Qp/Qs over 2.0 and systolic pulmonary artery pressure over 50mmHg showed significant 17% and 14.7% decreases of postoperative LVEF, respectively. Considering the duration of the aortic cross clamping times and closing methods of VSD, each group of duration over 30 min. and of patch closure showed 13.9% and 14.2% decreases of LVEF between pre and postoperative status respectively which was significant finding statistically.

  • Purpose - This paper explores whether overnight returns measured from the last closing price to today's opening price explain the cross-section of stock returns. Design/methodology/approach - This study is conducted using the Korean stock market data from 1998 to 2018, obtained from DataGuide database. The analysis begins with portfolio-level tests, followed by firm-level cross-sectional regressions. Findings - First, when decile portfolios sorted on the daily average of overnight returns in the previous months, the highest decile portfolio exhibits a significant negative risk-adjusted return. This suggests that stocks with higher average overnight returns are temporarily overvalued due to buying pressure from investors. Second, at least 6 months of persistence exists in average overnight returns, which is in line with the results reported by Barber, Odean and Zhu (2009) that investor sentiment persists over several weeks. Finally, Fama-MacBeth cross-sectional regression of expected returns after controlling for a variety of firm characteristic variables such as firm size, book-to-market ratio, market beta, momentum, liquidity, short-term reversal, the slope coefficient for overnight returns remains negative and statistically significant. Research implications or Originality - Overall, the evidence consistently suggests that overnight return is considered as a new priced factor in the cross-section of expected returns. The findings of this paper not only adds to finance literature, but also could be useful to practitioners in making stock investment decision.
