The valve timing and intake system in SI engine is chosen in order to get the maximum performance at the target rpm. This is a compromise and the performance reduction is expected in a certain rpm range. Therefore, to accomplish the possible engine capacity all over the operation ranges, it is required to investigate the effects of intake system and valve timing on engines more thoroughly. In this paper, it was attempted to examine closely the combined effects on the torque and the volumetric efficiency due to the change of valve timing and intake system dimensions. For this, the inlet port pressure was chosen as a primary parameter to represent engine performance characteristics together with surge tank pressure and induction pressure as secondaries. The inlet port pressure was analyzed in connection with both the secondaries and the performance data. Especially the relation between the inlet port pressure and the torque and volumetric efficiency was investigated on the operating conditions. In this experiment, it was acquired that the performances at specific rpm range could be improved by the combinations of valve timing and intake system. Then it was verified that pressure at a intake system contained useful data for the engine performance. By the analysis of inlet port pressure with the others, it was obtained that the properties of the torque and the volumetric efficiency due to the change of valve timing and intake conditions were able to be defined by the average and the maximum inlet port pressures, the pressure near before the intake valve closing(IVC) point as well as the pressure at IVC point during the intake valve opening duration. These results could be applied to almost all over the experimental conditions.

In CANDU, feeder pipes supply heavy water to pressure tube and steam generator. Under service conditions, Flow-Accelerated Corrosion (FAC) produces local wall-thinning in the feeder pipes. The wall-thinning in these pipes affects the integrity of the piping system, as verified in previous research. This paper provides limit loads for wallthinned feeder pipes with $45^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$ bend angles, and proposes an equation that predicts the limit loads for wallthinned feeder pipes with arbitrary bend angles. On the basis of finite element limit analyses, limit loads are obtained for wall-thinned feeder pipes under in-plane bending and internal pressure. There are two cases of in-plane bending: the in-plane closing direction and the in-plane opening direction. The material is considered the effect of the large deformation, so an elastic-perfectly-plastic material is assumed in the calculations.

This study aimed to evaluate the surface area and velocity of center of pressure (COP) during one leg standing by stimulating the sensory system in normal adults. Thirty subjects were enrolled in this study. Subjects were asked to stand on one leg during testing conditions. Testing conditions included 6 different sensory stimulations as follows: eyes opened, eyes closed, eyes opened with vibrator, eyes opened with head-mounted display (HMD), eyes opened with vibrator and HMD, and eyes closed with vibrator. During each testing condition, the surface area and velocity of center of pressure were measured. There were significant differences in the mean surface area and the mean velocity of COP between the "eyes opened" condition and the other five testing conditions (p<.05). However, in the comparison between the "eyes closed" and "eyes opened with HMD" conditions, there were no significant differences in the tested parameters. This study shows that closing eyes or keeping eyes opened while using HMD to experience virtual reality has the same effect on one leg standing balance. This finding should be considered in the evaluation or intervention of balance, especially one leg standing balance and balance while standing with a small base of support.

A set of experiments has been conducted on the performance sensitivity of the passive residual heat removal system (PRHRS) for an advanced integral type reactor, SMART, by using a high temperature and high pressure thermal-hydraulic test facility, the VISTA facility. In this paper the effects of the opening delay of the PRHRS bypass valves and the closing delay of the secondary system isolation valves, and the initial water level and the initial pressure of the compensating tank (CT) are investigated. During the reference test a stable flow occurs in a natural circulation loop that is composed of a steam generator secondary side, a secondary system, and a PRHRS; this is ascertained by a repetition test. When the PRHRS bypass valves are operated 10 seconds later than the secondary system isolation valves, the primary system is not properly cooled. When the secondary system isolation valves are operated 10 or 30 seconds later than the PRHRS bypass valves, the primary system is effectively cooled but the inventory of the PRHRS CT is drained earlier. As the initial water level of the CT is lowered to 16% of the full water level, the water is quickly drained and then nitrogen gas is introduced into the PRHRS, resulting in the deterioration of the PRHRS performance. When the initial pressure of the PRHRS is at 0.1MPa, the natural circulation is not performed properly. When the initial pressures of the PRHRS are 2.5 or 3.5 MPa, they show better performance than did the reference test.
One-way degassing valves are designed to allow pressure to be released from an air-tight package while preventing air from getting back into the package. Air, especially the oxygen ($O_2$) portion of air, can have negative effects on the package contents and its freshness. The most common application of the one-way degassing valve is for fresh roasted coffee. Demands of one-way degassing valves have been increasing with the high growth of global coffee market. In this study, we have developed one-way degassing valves for coffee and food packaging using ring type rubber disk, named SP valve. Its quality and performance was verified with test results to be equal with that of global top maker's product, Goglio valve. SP valves showed 820~1200 Pa of opening pressure, 10~50 Pa of closing pressure, 1.2~1.6 L/ min of flow rate. And, the SP valve applicable to ferment food packaging is expected to contribute to globalize Korean traditional food.

Drilling equipment is an essential part used in various fields such as construction, mining, etc., and it has drawn increasing attention in recent years. The drilling method is generally divided into three types. There are a top hammer method that strikes on the ground, a DTH (Down-The-Hole) method that directly strikes a bit in an underground area, and a rotary method that drills by using rotational force. Among them, the DTH method is most commonly used because it enables efficient drilling compared to other drilling methods. In the conventional DTH hammer, the valve between the piston and the bit is opened and closed using a face to face method. In order to improve the power of the DTH hammer, a DTH hammer with foot valve which is capable of instantaneous opening and closing is used in the drilling field. In this study, we designed a lab-scale DTH hammer with the foot valve, and manufactured an evaluation device for the experiment of the DTH hammer. In addition, we analyzed the performance of the DTH hammer adopted with foot valve according to the pressure range of 3-10 bar. As a result, the internal pressure distribution in the DTH hammer was experimentally analyzed, and then, the movement of the piston according to the pressure was predicted. We believe that this study provides the useful results to explain the performance characteristics of the DTH hammer with the foot valve.
In this study, a long-term unsteady simulation model has been developed using rigid water column theory which is more accurate than Extended-period model and more efficient comparing with water-hammer simulation model. The developed model is applied to 24-hours unsteady simulation considering daily water-demand and water-hammer analysis caused by closing a valve. For the case of 24-hours daily simulation, the pressure of each node decreases as the water demand increase, and when the water demand decrease, the pressure increases. During the simulation, the amplitudes of flow and pressure variation are different in each node and the pattern of flow variation as well as water demand is quite different than that of KYPIPE2. Such discrepancy necessitates the development of unsteady flow analysis model in water distribution network system. When the model is applied to water-hammer analysis, the pressure and flow variation occurred simultaneously through the entire network system by neglecting the compressibility of water. Although water-hammer model shows the lag of travel time due to fluid elasticity, in the aspect of pressure and flow fluctuation, the trend of overall variation and quantity of the result are similar to that of water-hammer model. This model is expected for the analysis of gradual long-term unsteady flow variations providing computational accuracy and efficiency as well as identifying pollutant dispersion, pressure control, leakage reduction corresponding to flow-demand pattern, and management of long-term pipeline net work systems related with flowrate and pressure variation in pipeline network systems
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate plantar foot pressure and static balance according to the type of insole in the elderly. Methods: Thirteen elderly (mean age: $67.08{\pm}2.25years$, mean height: $159.63{\pm}9.64cm$, mean body weight: $61.48{\pm}9.06kg$) who had no previous injury experience in the lower limbs and a normal gait pattern participated in this study. Three models of insoles of the normal, 3D, and triangle types were selected for the test. The Pedar-X system and Pedar-X insoles, 3.3 km/h of walking speed, and a compilation of 20 steps walking stages were used to analyze foot-pressure distribution. Static balance test was conducted using Gaitview AFA-50, and balance (opening eyes, closing eyes) was inspected for 20 s. One-way ANOVA was conducted to test the significance of the results with the three insoles. p-value of less than .05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The mean foot pressure under the forefoot regions was the lowest with the 3D insole during treadmill walking (p<.05). The mean value under the midfoot was the highest with the 3D insole (left: p<.05, right: p<.01). The mean value under the rearfoot was the lowest with the 3D insole (p<.001). The maximum foot pressure value under the foot regions was the lowest on both sides of the forefoot with the 3D insole. A statistically significant difference was seen only in the left foot (p<.01). The maximum value under the midfoot was the highest with the 3D insole (p<.001). No statistically significant difference was detected on the values under the rearfoot. In the case of vertical ground reaction force (GRF), statistically significant difference was seen only in the left side rearfoot (p<.01). However, static balance values (ENV, REC, RMS, Total Length, Sway velocity, and Length/ENV) did not show significant differences by the type of insole. Conclusion: These results show that functional insoles can decrease plantar pressure and GRF under the forefoot and rearfoot. Moreover, functional insoles can dislodge the overload of the rearfoot and forefoot to the midfoot. However, functional insoles do not affect the static balance in the elderly.
The effects of Physical exercise, gymnastics and sports on the cardiopulmonary function were studied in the middle and high school toys. The subjects were divided into 4 groups; non-training group and training group in both middle school and high school boys. In the above groups, pulmonary function studies were performed, and blood pressure and the heart rate were also checked to evaluate physical fitness during and immediately after running exercise on the tread-mill, with the speed of 5 MPH and elevation of 9% and 11.25%. The types of sports in the training group were base ball, body building, Taekwondo (Korean style boxing) and hand ball. The results obtained were as followings: 1) In the training group, cardiopulmonary function showed some tendency of the increase comparing to the non-training group. 2) The increase in cardiopulmonary function was observed according to the age became older, but the clear changes on cardiopulmonary function was not observed as the difference of the group between the training and the non-training. 3) The expiratory volume was decreased as the increase of age except 17 years of age for the value of the per kg body weight. 4) In the non-training group, the mean value of oxygen consumption under maximum work load was increased, while those in the training group was decreased. But it may be noted that oxygen consumption for the expiratory volume was increased in the training group, and that the oxygen cost in the training group was .higher than that of the non-training group. 5) The pulse pressure of the high school group during and immediately after running exercise was observed in the higher value comparing with that of the middle school group It was suggested that the changes of the pulse pressure was owing to the method of determination and that to the decrease of diastolic pressure caused by the decrease of peripheral vascular resistance up to critical closing pressure. 6) Any differences of the changes in the heart rate between the training group and non-training group was not observed during and immediately after running exercise. 7) The relative value of the expiratory volume to the heart rate was decreased in the elder age group.

The hydraulic fracturing developed to improve permeability of tight reservoir is one of key stimulation technologies for developing unconventional resources such as shale gas and deep geothermal energy. The experimental study was conducted to improve disadvantage of hydraulic fracturing which has simple fracture pattern and poor fracturing efficiency. The fracturing experiments was conducted for tight rock using various fracturing fluids, water, N2, and CO2 and the created fracture pattern and fracturing efficiency was analyzed depending on fracturing fluids. The borehole pressure increased rapidly and then made fractures for hydraulic fracturing with constant injection rate, however, gas fracturing shows slowly increased pressure and less fracture pressure. The 3D tomography technic was used to generate images of induced fracture using hydraulic and gas fracturing. The stimulated reservoir volume (SRV) was estimated increment of 5.71% (water), 12.72% (N2), and 43.82% (CO2) respectively compared to initial pore volume. In addition, permeability measurement was carried out before and after fracturing experiments and the enhanced permeability by gas fracturing showed higher than hydraulic fracturing. The fracture conductivity was measured by increasing confining stress to consider newly creating fracture and closing induced fracture right after fracturing. When the confining stress was increased from 2MPa to 10MPa, the initial permeability was decreased by 89% (N2) and 50% (CO2) respectively. This study shows that the gas fracturing makes more permeability enhancement and less reduction of induced fracture conductivity than hydraulic fracturing.
